to the guy who said "whens the last time someone from a PvP server won the botb?"

are you really that ignorant? do you think the BOTB is about who has better skills? Hell no, in pvp servers everyone is "behind" blue servers in PvE. Their gear is significantly worse, because when you want mobs you actually have to kill other people and avoid the griefing to get the mobs killed.

eq pvp = gear dependant, it sucks.

You know, I really hate to say this, but when you all get into an argument over what class is better than another class, it really doesn't make any sense. I mean, come on people, this is a game!!! It's not like this is real life. In real life, monks don't fight. Rangers protect the forest from fires and stuff. Clerics are more priests. And Warriors, well, you can't really be put into any kind of "acctuall" real life grouping. But the point is that THIS IS A GAME!! who care's if my lvl 60 Monk with 9k AA points can out damage youro lvl 60 Ranger with 9k AA points. It's still just a game, have fun playing it. Some people get too uptight about all this stuff. Not trying to flame anyone's post here, just get over it, move on, quite trying to analyze every little aspect of each class. All classes have their strong points and their weak points. Whoopie. I know I play the game for fun, not becuase I want my uberduber monkie to be better than your uberduber ranger or whatever.

ATK isn't everything
# Jul 12 2002 at 5:00 PM Rating: Decent
Just because you have the highest ATK doesn't mean you have the highest damage output. It's true that the higher your ATK is the harder you hit, but certain classes are on better damage tables to keep all the melees in balance.

Example: Bards more than likely have the highest ATK of any melee. With all their songs going their ATK can get upwards of 1,500 with a Primal weapon. Even with that ATK bards have the lowest melee output of any class. On the flipside monks have one of the lower ATK ratings of the melees but we do the 2nd most melee damage just behind rogues.
Besides the point..
# Jun 15 2002 at 4:13 PM Rating: Default
Why are rangers classified under Major damage dealer... this isnt a flame, i really just have no experience of actually good rangers, i can understand if they use bows though... How would giving a ranger this better than a monk? (other than the monk can get better perhaps) i know they can Jolt cuz they dont tank to well... Is it becuz they can Dual Weild and Cast?
RE: Besides the point..
# Jul 30 2002 at 1:19 PM Rating: Decent
Well, if your guild is capable of obtaining BoF, I'm sure the monks in your guild have their mind set on something better than this. If you can handle NToV you can obtain primal/priceless or many of the higher end SoL h2h weapon, so I'm sure they would probably pass out of desire for something better.
RE: Besides the point..
# Jul 16 2002 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
Rangers do the 3rd most damage of any melee class, just behind monks, toe to toe that is. They are on a higher dmg table than warriors and have very high ATK. Before monks get access to weapons like wurmscale and priceless and even this baton rangers can even out damage them with a good bow and a good arrow and endless quiver. But once a monk gets access to these weapons hes back on top.
RE: Besides the point..
# Oct 02 2002 at 1:21 AM Rating: Good
>>>>rangers can even out damage them with a good bow and a good arrow and endless quiver. But once a monk gets access to these weapons hes back on top.<<<<

No monk will outdamage a ranger with a primal bow, EQ, AM3, and a good arrow, assuming the mob isn't rooted/snared. (especially if you throw trushot in there) Assuming the ranger has primal, a good arrow, all those AA's, the mob can be engaged with arrows, the mob isn't rooted/snared, and the ranger is using trueshot, no class will outdamage him (sustained DPS) no matter what equipment they have.

But of course, archery != melee, and many ubermobs can't be engaged with archery anyway. (walls, broken los and such) So monk melee damage > ranger melee damage.
RE: Besides the point..
# Jun 16 2002 at 12:11 AM Rating: Default
Rangers have humongous natural ATK ratings. Even with mediocre Strength (~150), your average ranger has an ATK rating 100 to 150 (or even 200) more than a warrior, and probably 50 to 150 more than a monk.

Point in fact, rangers at 55 get an enhanced ATK rating simply for being 55. And then, again, at 60 our ATK is enhanced further simply because we are that level.
hmm

This appears to be a direct damage proc. That particular kind of proc does not generate much aggro. According to everything I have heard, direct damage generates no more aggro than you would get by hitting for the same amount of damage. This is good for classes that want to avoid aggro but do damage (non-warriors at this level) and bad for those that want to maintain aggro (warriors at this level). Procs that generate uber-aggro are stun, DOT's, and buffs. Many of the higher level critters are completely immune to stun, BUT the proc will still generate a lot of aggro on them. Apparently it is the thought that counts heheh. Ask that enchanter that tries to charm a critter but fails if he doesn't generate aggro with his failed attempt.

My guild probably has 6 months to a year to go before we have a shot at an item like this one. When we do, we will almost certainly know in advance exactly who will get it. This is true of almost all guilds that get to this level. Arguing over who gets it is pointless because that decision will never, ever be up to you alone. Your guild or your guild charter as interpreted by your officers will decide. If I had to guess though, I would say that this item would probably go to a ranger or a monk first and then maybe to a bard if no ranger or monk needed it. Beastlords are too new a class for me to make a judgement call on this.

As regards the old "this is a monk item" versus "monks are greedy bastards!" argument ... oh, where to begin ....*sigh*

Monks have a very narrow selection of equipment to choose from. Almost every single high level monk item out there is ALL/ALL or (at the very least) usable by all the melee classes and some of the casters. This means that if a high level monk wants to upgrade, he has to compete with many people. Fortunately, most of these items are considered inferior by the other classes that can use them at the levels at which they are obtained. At these levels, you may hear non-monks on a raid say things like, "Looks like another monk item" in a slightly derisive way because the item is useless to all the non-monks that can use it. And yet, monks that are present will be overjoyed to get the cast-off item.

Most of the arguments over monk versus non-monk occur for three reasons.

Reason#1: The person who thinks monks are greedy for calling the item a monk item is 15 or 20 levels away from being able to get the item in question. By the time he is actually able to get the item, it is garbage to him and he agrees that it actually is a monk item. This is particulary true when the person complaining is below raid level and the item in question is a raid level item.

Reason#2: The item is one of the truly uber items in the game that can only be obtained in ToV or Sleeper's Tomb or by killing Yelinak or something. Items such as these are often designed to be extremely desirable by a large range of classes, including monks. Some monks, who have gotten used to the rule of thumb that says if a monk wants it, it is garbage to everyone else, assume that these uber items are monk items. They see the low weight and nice stats and think, "Monk item!!!".

Reason#3: A monk sees an item listed here and sees that it would be a wonderful item for him to have. He posts something like, "What a great monk item!!!" What he means is that it would be a great item for a monk to have. He does not mean that it isn't a great item for any other class. He isn't arguing that it should automatically go to a monk, but some people choose to interpret that way. Odds are good that he isn't familiar with what eqipment the other classes think is good or not good. He might not realize that rangers (for example) would really love to have that item as well.

Occasionally, you do see a monk post a "monk item" argument who is a real jerk about it. Mostly, I think such postings are made by "trollers". Trollers are people that deliberately post things designed to start arguments with comments like, "Enchanters are evil bastards!" or "Only people too stupid to play a caster play melee types!" They probably don't even believe what they post. They just like to start fights and laugh at the angry responses they see.
How it really is
# May 22 2002 at 12:52 AM Rating: Decent
Some people, at sometimes, tend to have a hard time understanding the basic operating principles of this simple game - such as satisfying large numbers of people.

This namely leads to the officer reward loot system, as refered to by the ever experianced Sage, Argfeld. How much someone has contributed to the guild is often difficult to measure, especially when it is done in a very subjective manner, such as Sage Argelf has described.

The widely popular solution to this quandry is the use of POINTS! (/em gasp.. QUANTIFIED EFFORT).

Upon overview of the best guilds, such as Triton (www.tritonguild.com), Afterlife (www.afterlifeguild.org), FoH (www.fohguild.org), etc.. etc.. the only guild that still uses officer award is Afterlife. I personally don't understand why someone wouldn't want quantified, inargueable, and DEFINITE measure of their time, hard work, effort, and myraid numbers of hours spent, in which they should have been sleeping for work or school. Sure, officer award has it's advantages, but they don't compare to a point system - where that you can plan out your next spendings of points, ensuring you will get what you want, or when you will get it.

The three top guilds of my server our (In no particular order ..):
www.wraithguild.com - This is my guild, we use points.
www.vismaiorguild.com - The seemingly most powerful guild, they also use points.
www.lotuscult.com - They use offficer award, and there are people that sometimes are unhappy with it. They've considered changing to points before, but they couldn't accurately show the contribution of the members from over the last year by starting everyone out at zero again ..

From my guild's website, I can see how I stack up to other member's, checking the point prices, and stats of items I may want, and who may could/want to buy the item. This is critical to intelligent planning.

When an item drops, you can or could use it, and you are spending the Everquest equalivent of money on it - the arguement of what is best for what is moot. If the (moderately intelligent) monk wants this here little baton - go right ahead. It will cost him a lot more than it is worth to him, as it is the best Pre-Luclin ranger, non-Vulak primary (too lazy to look up the stats on Tolan's whatever.. I think it's delay is a little high for primary anyway) in the game, and far from being the best for a monk. Same thing with bards, they don't do **** for damage, regardless of their weapons. For almost all situations, the Siren's Dagger from the northwing, epic, or a primal/priceless suits a bard much better - his points could probally be spent better else where.

Also, being level 60 doesn't imply you will be able to get this. You have to be in a good, raiding oriented guild. You know how much mindless ******** goes on in these boards about who deserves what item.. competeting high level guilds are the same way. They all want the spawn, the loot, the increased damage, ac/hp for the main tanks, resists for all, casting effectiveness for casters from the loot - so they can advance and kill bigger, harder, more difficult, mobs to get better items. Your guild just doesn't walk in and take a whack at NToV like it's yours in six monthes or whatever.. you work for it, you beat the better equiped, faster responding, more experianced guild(s) to getting the spawn. Welcome to the high level game, love it or **** yourself with your elite frostbringer, dragonhide armors, or even maybe your uber Horn of Hsaga from Tormax that was too much a peice of **** for us, so I sold it to you, cash for peridots are more of a priority for us.

Items like this, anything like this, anything remotely like this, by ANY CAPABLE guild would NOT be rolled for. I have to clue where the hell you people get this idea from, or how you could even start to let it nest into your minds that it is fair. If you like this idea, go join a guild that's highlight is zerging Velketor every three days with 50+ people. I'm sure they could use some more.

But I disgress..

Inviting yourself to have your ego crushed, flaming.. or whatever you want to call it is duely welcomed, and much apperciated.

EDIT: Changed 'low delay' to 'high delay' when talking about the ranger sword, I didn't mean 'low'.

Tanks are not damage dealers...
# Nov 10 2001 at 3:47 AM Rating: Good
If your a tank whining about weapons that will do more damage for you... then resign your possition as a tank. Yes damage does help in taunting off the enemy, but a weapon like this would not go right off to someone who cant use it to its full potential. Warriors can taunt just fine with primals. If the monkey is doing to much damage, well hes goin to be a dead monkey and should know when to back off. By the time you even think of going into ToV and then even think of going after NToV guys, youll pretty much realize the full utilitarian position of your character and play it as such. FACT! warriors are not uber damage dealers!!! get it strait now cause if you think otherwise your going to be disapointed later on in the game. My sarnk warhammer can out taunt 2 jade maces just in its stun proc. When them enemies get stunned they sure as hell dont like it. So even though jade mace may do more damage than a sarnak warhammer, which is 9/20 instead of 9/18 like a jade mace, i am considered the better of the tanks, since i can keep npcs on me over the other tanks without even useing taunt.

ok so if agro control makes the best tank does that mean pallies are the best tanks? my 54 pally can out agro 60 wars with epics and guantlets of dragonslaying. Yes i know mobs above 56 cant be stunned BUT you still get the aggro from it. pallies = probly the lowest dmg by melee's. so we are considered bad tanks but damn if agro is the new deciding factor i am a god.

There's 3 parts to being a good tank:
1. Being able to gain aggro
2. Being able to keep aggro
3. Being able to withstand the effects of the aggro. i.e.: mob damage

In large raid situations, such as NToV, most pallies fail number 3 :p
Warrior defensive discipline is what makes warriors the best tank over pallies and shadowknights.

If all it took was massive aggro to be a good tank, then enchanters would be best for the job :p

You get the DD from the 100 blows proc but it doesn't actually stun. The same goes for giants.

You can't stun a god with a t-staff. It is unresistable but some MoBs are flagged as un-stunnable which in that case you only do the 120dd.

Uther is right, a warriors job is to keep agro, the main tank doesnt use the most powerfull weapon,or deal the most damage. you need a low dly weapon to retain taunt, prefeably with some kind of uber agro spell like snare or stun. the other wariors in the raid should use high damage weapons and not use the taunt skill at all.
doing the most damage isnt the only way to get agro. take a druid that casts snare on a mob and then heals the warrior, and sits down to med, your gonna have a tough time getting that mob off the poor druid. chanters, all they have to do to become top of the mobs agro list is mez it. Clerics may just have to cast one CH if the main tank hasn't been mashing that taunt button every time it comes up. if a weapon doesnt seem uber enought for you. why not think about who it might be usefull for, under what circumstances it would be better than a dmg 20 dly 30 weapon, with tons of stats. at the higher lvls when you get these items, your stats are pretty high already, and you need to think about other things. like retaining agro so your clerics aren't pulling there hair out trying to decide whitch tank to heal. this is not a great taunt weapon. DD's generally are held equally as melee damage as far as taunt goes. at end game its all about agro management for warriors, and a warriors secondary position is damage dealer.

wouldn't the beastlord be like paladin's and shadowknights, with only double attack and not duel wield? I may be wrong, but if that's true, they are nowhere near monk power, even if monk's didn't have /discs and special attacks. However if they have ranger melee skills, they can deal it out pretty good.
