My email to SOE:
"Hello. I can't seem to find a straight answer on this, so I decided to come straight to the source. I want to know if the Legends of Norrath Booster Pack (or ANY LON Packs / Cards) can still drop off of mobs in game? Or did SOE do away with this and the ONLY way to get them is by purchasing them or winning them by playing LON?

Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated!"

SOE Answer:
"Greetings,

Here is the reference number to your ticket # XXXXXX-000267 . regarding your recent inquiry.

I went ahead and asked around about your question. I have confirmed that they were in fact removed from the game. You can buy them on the Marketplace or on the website.

If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

LoN Boosters + Starter Sets and Decks (Updated Sept 30 2008)
# Apr 28 2008 at 2:40 PM Rating: Decent
Updated Sept 30 of 2008

If you intend to sell or trade this item in EQ then make sure you don’t ‘use’ it.

When you ‘use’ or right click on this item as if you were going to cast a spell from it, it vanishes from EQ and your account is granted a booster pack in the LoN digital trading card game. Once you ‘use’ or ‘redeem’ a LoN card it’s gone from EQ for good.

The booster packs only have 15 cards but they do have a chance of containing a ‘loot’ card. A very, very, very, very small chance. And even then the loot card you get will probably be junk, like some potion with an effect that’s cheap and easy to obtain in the game already. A ‘loot’ card is one you can ‘redeem’ in LoN and it will then be available for one of your characters to claim in either EQ or EQII. (you get to pick which game to apply loot cards to before you open a new pack, not after) The rest of the cards are random from a mix of archetypes, and from common to rare. (Archetypes: Generic – Fighter – Mage – Scout – Priest)

If you have EQ you get a free starter deck and limited access to try out LoN. Booster packs are a few bucks real money and buying just one from Sony will grant you full access to all the features of the LoN game. [Note: If you’ve had trouble getting EQ’s LoN client to run you might try the stand alone one. I had that problem but the free stand alone client works fine for me.] Once you buy that first booster not only can you start trading and playing on LoN, but you can play through the scenarios and earn a good number of free ‘fixed’ cards including some cool looking fixed foils.

Most players will not want to open boosters because they are most valuable as ‘currency’ in LoN trades. If you want to build a set of cards to play LoN with, or just get a cool loot card to claim for your EQ/EQII characters you are often better off saving up and trading your ‘unopened’ booster packs than you are ‘opening’ them. For the most part the boosters are more valuable in trades than the cards you will get from opening them.

And I should note too, for those who want to get their hands on loot cards… I believe you really are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t first check their current trade value in the LoN Trading Lobby. I’ve seen players duped out of vast sums of EQ plat, even real money for cards that are pretty easy and not to ‘expensive’ to get hold of in LoN trades. Also… Every so often Sony offers Tournament packs for $10.00 that usually contain a loot card, (sometimes rather nice ones) plus a few boosters, and a promo card. No kidding… I saw someone ask $40 bucks Paypal in LoN for a card that was just available from the Sony store for $10 in a Tournament pack. Now it’s up to you to figure out your best option but a little invested time to check out the trading situation in LoN, as well as the Sony store itself, might pay off big time.

Also… if you do jump into trading in LoN make sure you regularly watch posted trades for any item you’re interested in, ask around and compare, because it’s been my experience that a huge number of posted trades are utterly ridiculous. Sucker trades. My advice? Once you think you have an idea of fair value, post your own trade for exactly what you want but start a little low. Every loot card I’ve traded for I got for half or better what the typical asking ‘price’ was at the time. Posted Trades in LoN are so much easier than running a trader in EQ once you get the hang of it. Unlike EQ, you don’t have to be logged-in to trade. Start your bids low and give it time, as much as 3-7 days or more before you start increasing your offer. Don’t be shy about re-posting a trade. It sometimes takes awhile for the person to come along who wants what you don’t want as much as you want what he’s got. It’s worked well for me.

On Baz value for Boosters:

Ofc if your selling boosters you are probably going to want to sell them at whatever the market will bear. Get the best price you can. I’ve sold a few in the baz myself from time to time. But that said…

I really don’t know why people would buy boosters for 50-90k each. Boosters can get you a lot of some kinds of cards in LoN but if you’re going for anything serious, you will go broke so quick if you pay top-plat for your boosters and other LoN cards in EQ. Even the most common familiars for example can ‘cost’ you 2-4 boosters in trade. Ask yourself what it’s really worth to you? For example, would you pay 100 – 400 k for a little bit of a poison save or some regen if you were buying a piece of gear instead of an LoN familiar? And if you want to build up a really good playing set with lots of rare cards, or are going for the best of the LoN mounts or visages, you are going to need a lot of boosters. A lot… even for the most skilled LoN trader. If you are seriously going for the big game… the best loot cards or a good set of cards to play with… I suggest you don’t pay more than you absolutely must to gather your boosters, starters, and promo drops from EQ. Take the time to set up a buyer and don’t let yourself get caught up in biding wars. If some nut sets up their buy-line for anything even approaching what the baz traders are asking then just let them do their wacky thing while you wait for them to run out of plat or log. Think long term… You’re running a marathon so be patient and pace yourself because sprinting here only sets you up for disaster.

Also… If you’re thinking of buying a starter set in the bazaar, then check to make sure you couldn’t just buy two boosters and a starter deck much cheaper. This is often the case on my server. Reverse the logic if you are buying boosters, it's not likely but you never know, someone may have a starter set up that will give you your boosters cheaper than buying them individually. You do NOT get a guaranteed loot card with a Starter Set or Booster Pack, just a chance at one. There is no advantage to starter sets except for the rare occasion where the price breaks out favorably for it’s individual components.

Don’t over look the fact too, when you’re shopping for boosters in the Bazaar, that you can also shop for boosters in the Sony store. Personally, real money is more valuable to me than plat but still, plat takes time to gather together too. Depending on circumstances, spending real money might be a reasonable option for some. Ofc if you invest some time and effort you can play LoN, including tournaments, for very little cost in dollars. If you work at it you may never have to spend more than the 3$ real money for that first booster.

When I first started watching, 40k was a much more common baz price for boosters. In recent weeks (Sept. 2008) it’s often been at 70k (low-end) per booster with the average low price at 50k. I would never pay that and don’t. By trading in LoN I’ve managed to build up an extensive collection of cards to play with as well as several of the low-end loot toys all through posted trades. It takes time and some effort but it’s pretty easy to do. Work your buyer in EQ and watch and wait for the best deals. There’s no way I’d have even a quarter of what I’ve built up in LoN if I’d had to pay 50k or more for my boosters.

Over time I’ve seen Booster Packs offered at from 30 – 100k with most low-end prices being in the 40-50k range on any given day. Starter Sets have been at 80 – 200k. Ofc that 200k is super ridiculous because at no time in all the time I’ve been watching would anyone have had to pay more than 70k for a single booster and if they had only waited a few days it went back down to 45&50k again. Usually the cost for two boosters and a starter deck would have been 83 – 105k at most. Starter Decks are comparatively cheap, though the price has been creeping up for them too. Again, I suggest you don’t buy them for over 3k at most, unless you feel you must have them this instant. Set up a buyer for a few nights and you won’t have to. Here’s why I don’t think Starter Decks (decks not sets) are worth the recent low-end prices of 4-5k in the EQ baz… Usually in LoN if you wanted to trade Starter Decks for Event Passes you have to offer 4 starter decks to get one pass. (though the ‘price’ is creeping up over in LoN a bit too) And on average it takes 3 event passes to get one booster. So if you pay 5k for each starter deck, that’s costing you 20k for one event pass or 60k for a booster. Again that’s a good way to put your EQ toons in the poorhouse.

Also on Starter Decks… they are 10$ real money in the Sony store so the Oathbound decks that drop in EQ can be a huge bargain if you are buying them in EQ with plat instead. The only problem is the deck you get in EQ will be of a random archetype. (fighter, mage, scout or priest) So it may take several tries before you get the one in LoN that you wanted. Buy from Sony, and you can ofc pick the archetype of the deck as well as buy decks from the other expansions.

LoN Boosters - Starter Sets and Decks in general (update)
# May 09 2008 at 10:26 AM Rating: Decent
Updated Sept 30, 2008

I should add too that after buying your first booster from Sony to open up all the features of the game… you still have to buy event passes in order to participate in a lot of the events. Many tournaments aren’t ‘free’ unless you are a wiz at trading for event passes. (and ofc time is money so it's not 'free' even then) Event passes are 1$ from Sony but events usually require several passes. 5 is pretty standard, sometimes 10, and some fees require both event passes and booster packs, or starter decks to enter.

If you want to trade in LoN for EQ loot cards but are not going to play LoN, you are probably better off selling your looted cards (except for boosters) in the EQ baz and using the plat to buy boosters as cheaply as you can in buyer mode. Trading raid cards, promo cards and decks for boosters and event passes in LoN is easy enough but takes enough time and effort that it probably isn’t worth it to the average non LoN player to bother with. If you can get a good price, it’s probably much easier for most to sell your raid and promo cards, your decks and probably your sets as well for plat in EQ rather than claiming them to use in LoN trades. If you can sell a starter set for 90k or better and buy boosters in buyer mode for 30k you are at least one booster ahead of where you’d be if you’d just claimed the starter set. Boosters are most likely what you will need in the end to get that loot card that you really want, so converting everything into boosters within EQ might be the best option for most.

If you are willing to learn how to trade within LoN however, you might be able to squeeze even more out of it. The huge advantage there too is that you don’t have to worry about cards that don’t stack. You can easily hold hundreds, thousands of cards on your LoN account, which would be impossible to store within EQ. And if you are very good at it, you can get boosters cheaper that way than you’d ever be able to buy them for directly with EQ plat. The effort you have to put in can be pretty extensive though depending on how hard you push it.

You don’t get any benefit from this card in EQ itself. If you right click on the item, like casting a clicky spell from it, then your account is granted a Booster Pack in the LoN trading card game.

At that point you open the LoN client, either the one that comes with EverQuest or the stand alone one you can download for free, and go to your Collection Manager where you can open the deck if you like. (My machine can’t run the EQ-linked LoN client, the graphics are messed up, so until I have a fix for that I use the stand-alone client instead.)There is a very small chance you will get a ‘loot’ card in your pack. At that point you can ‘redeem’ the loot card and you will then be able to claim the reward from that card in EQ on one of your characters.

[edit] (I've posted it elsewhere but I'll add it here as well. The best way to get a specific loot card is to trade UNOPENED booster packs for it in the LoN game. Your chance of getting any loot card from a booster is very slim, your chance of getting one you actually want is much smaller. The cards you get from a pack are usually not as valuable as the unopened pack itself. Unopened boosters can be saved up and traded for exactly the loot you want. Exchange rates change so you will have to check on current rates when you're ready.)

A tip: I was running both EQ and LoN. I redeemed Booster drops in EQ but they didn’t show up in my collection manager in LoN until I logged out of LoN and logged back in again. Apparently, at least if you’re running the stand-alone client, it only recovers your latest redeemed cards from EQ on start-up.
