Well I can say for sure this will be a nice item when I am 49. I'm glad I checked here before I bought. The only reason I made my ranger was forage, tracking, material farming so to have this earring on him for a free snare any time and when I slap on my fungi tunic eventually it would be a very sweet way to hunt tigers, spiders, or just clear out mobs who spawn in place of the mobs you want without them running. :p
RE: sigh
# Aug 28 2005 at 3:44 PM Rating: Decent
comebine this and any 49+ ranger or druid and you have the ultimate powerleveling machine for lower level charactors to feed off of, this can be used as a spam form of agro, mobs will almost always kill them selves on your dot (or get to 20% and under) then let the people your pling finish them off and bam the mob never hit them they got xp for it and you didnt have to ds every one int he group just your self so its a lot more mana efficent) ive used this on my ranger to pl my necro mage and wizzy lol and im about to use it right now to pl my druid and bard
Why a level 49 effect??
# Apr 22 2003 at 3:08 AM Rating: Decent
I picked up one of these in the Bazaar for the HP and MANA the added Snare was just a bonus. I figured it would free up the a space for another spell, right. Then when I try to use it I get the old "you are not of sufficient level to use this item"! Oh come on I have the damn spell! Why don't they make that part of the discription so you don't buy it only to find out it don't work for you!? Still like the 35 HP and 35 MANA for my little 32 Ranger!

I get this earring today, the best adventage for the earring is: you can "RECAST" instance snare once 1st cast is resist. use earring effect at the beginning,if you get resist, you can cast the ensare(or snare whatever )by your spell gem with no delay ( need no recovery time )
I do love this earring cause the 35 mana is equal to 7wis ( at lvl 50 ) or ~ 6 wis ( at lvl 60 ) if your wis is 200+, could not be better.
You off i think
# Apr 13 2002 at 9:07 PM Rating: Decent
isn't the formula for mana int/5 then multiplied with your lvl? so 5(int)/5=1 1x50(lvl) is 50
so if u think about it 50/5 is 10 mana per int/wis... not 100% sure but i'd say 95%
RE: You off i think
# Apr 25 2002 at 1:36 PM Rating: Good
you are right. the formulas are
wis below 200: mana = wis/5 * level
wis over 200: mana = wis/10 * level

to go the other way (mana to wis) we have
wis below 200: wis = mana * 5 / level
wis above 200: wis = mana * 10 / level

from this we can easily see that at low levels + mana items are better than + wis, and that at high wisdom, mana is better than wis.

so if your wis is less than 200, with this item you are gaining an effective (35*5 / level) wis. at level 10, that is equal to ~17 wis, and at 60 it is equal to ~3 wis.

so if your wis is less than 200, with this item you are gaining an effective (35 * 10 / level) wis. at level 10, that is equal to ~35 wis, and at 60 it is equal to ~6 wis.

so is it good? depends on your level, how much wis you will loose to equip it, total current wis, and total wis with this item on.

hmmm

Still a little confused
above 200 mean you take the wis only above 200(214-200=14/10*lvl=mana)+(200/5*lvl=mana) or is your wis is over 200 you lose mana (199/5*lvl=mana) (201/10*lvl=mana)
sorry for posting this on a equipment page and not a mana forum
RE: hmmm
# Sep 17 2002 at 6:36 AM Rating: Decent
no if u have over 200 wis/int (refered as VAL) formula is :

(200/5*lvl)+((VAL-200)/10*lvl)

i.e. WIS/INT = 222
(200/5*lvl) + ((222-200)/10*lvl)

... get it
Only the part over 200 is /10 .. the first 200 is still /5. Hope that clears it up :)

Ensnare
# Jan 31 2002 at 6:16 PM Rating: Decent
WEll I use ES Gauntlets, and YEs I love them But I have to remember to re SNARE alot of Mobs I kite cause it wears off .. Would LOVE Ensnare !, But Would take one these Just to get them Gloves off My Hands for Soemthng that Had Wisdom/mana & Or Effect (for instance: Gloves of Earth Calling AC: +10 Str: +5 Wis: +12 Magic Resist: +5 Fire Resist: +5 Cold Resist: +5 Mana: +50
Weight: 2.0 Effect: Triggered Shield of Thorns )
Course you have to Kill a Lvl 70 Mob for them in Keal LoL But you get the Idea.

Usable at lv 50.
The effect...
# Oct 20 2001 at 5:06 PM Rating: Decent
The casting time appears to be the same as druid's ES Gaunts. (~2.5 seconds)
RE: The effect...
# Oct 24 2001 at 6:26 AM Rating: Decent
Bye Bye, ES gaunts...
I figure when these wasings get more and more common, poor il ES gaunt's Price will be fropping like a brick...
afterall... why use ac eff:sanre when you could use Ac eff:snare 35hp 35mana (better then F-Loop IMO, even w/o the eff)
Then that will open up your golves for items such as, Gaunts of Iron Tactics (7wis) or Coldain Gloves (6wis 20mana)
Good Or Bad?
# Oct 15 2001 at 9:42 AM Rating: Decent
1st : Good 35hps 35 mana on an earing
2nd : Bad Snare = why cant it be ensare?

I mean ensare is a lvl 29 spells (I thinks) 10 min duration, why cant Verant make a druid/rmg effect item with ensnare ! (appart from the druid shld from the WL dragon) Snare lvl 1 spell 2-3 mins duration.

3rd a FYI the cast time for it is aabout 4 secs, so its usefull, I got one the other day. Im 58 with 200 wis so this is a good item for a slot thats actualy quite hard to get good ear items.

This replaced my old trusty forrest loop ;-)

Pretty much like Zwoop said, it couldn't really be Ensnare, as that would negate the risk and reward of getting an items like the Tanglewood Shield ( https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=6463 ) from Woushi

For reference, I have both.. I use the earring when I'm pulling and want the ranger in the group to be able to taunt it off me with Ensnare, and use the shield when I want to make sure a mob isn't going anywhere..

But I usually follow up with the epic, just to make sure, assuming the mob isn't dead after the 3 week casting time :)
RE: Good Or Bad?

You do realize that the Wis & Int Caps are no longer 200 but 255 now don't you? You no longer get 1 mana per point of Wis/Int over 200 but something around 6 points per point :)
RE: Good Or Bad?
# Dec 14 2001 at 9:45 AM Rating: Decent
It's mana free snare ... MANA FREE. Who cares if it's snare or ensnare. So you have to cast a few more times vs ensnare, it's mana free.

Got mine last night. WooT. Lvl 59 druid ooced the drop (he had one) and being the only other class in zone able to use it I got the loot = ). It will make for nice mana cheap Bow kite.

Actually, snare is so low in mana cost that you can still cast it when you dont see any blue. It's a level 1 Druid spell and costs 15 mana. IMO it is by far the best spell druids get.

The real beauty of this items is that you can mem a new spell in place of snare unless casting time is imperitive. Most cases it isn't.
RE: Good Or Bad?
# May 06 2002 at 3:35 PM Rating: Decent
OMG someone FINALLY posted what the real value of this effect is: it's one less memmed spell you have to have up at all times. I know I've had snare in slot #1 since I was level 9, all the time, no questions asked. Get yer earring hotkeyed all of the sudden you can have something else up and ready to go instead.
RE: Good Or Bad?
# Oct 17 2001 at 4:18 PM Rating: Decent
It's "snare" because it'd be way to good if it had Ensnare. Compare this to the ES gauntlets, which has the same effect (this earring is much better though :).

There is an item for Druids that cast Ensnare, but it drops from a highish level Dragon, which would require at least 2 uber groups, or a full raid force to kill. So, it'd be totally unbalanced if a ring this "trivial" to get had a similar effect.

# Oct 09 2001 at 11:24 PM Rating: Default
I have always wondered where the mobs get items. I mean this thing drops from sarnak right but sarnak cant be either rng or druid nor can they be Enchanter they are necromancer and shaman caster just like us iksar. (tho they are deityless bastards i wont get into that right now) Why do all of these mob carry around stuff they cant use. Its not like they have a Mob East common or anything. Enchanter earing should drop from enchanter mob and so should all other class specific stuff.

Do you carry around only gear you can use? Perhaps they were gonna go to the NPC auc zone and sell it when they were killed. :P I personally carry a bunch of crap (depending on how full my bank is) around that I can't use.

#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 09 2001 at 8:44 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'm not even going to ***** about ES gloves today, no really, I'm not. It'd be better if it works below 45 unlike those other gloves I'm not going to ***** about. Don't know if it works only post 45 or not though so... yeah, um... anyways I'd wear these. So what lvl is chardok? And can you get a group in there or is it a raid dungeon like ToFS?
RE: Snare, hmmm
# Oct 09 2001 at 10:07 PM Rating: Decent
Chardok is similar to Sebilis... I would say 46+.

I was there last night. At the entrance, we saw a few green mobs, so they would have been between 40 and 45 I would guess. Once we moved in, everything else was blue. Deeper in, some mobs got alot tougher. Looks like the scaled things up pretty well.

Also note that Chardok is one way in, another way out. Dont go there thinking you can take a peek and step back out.

I like the changes they made alot. Chardok used to be a nightmare for a single group due to the numerous and constant adds. Last night, we had adds, but at most, we had 3 mezzed while killing another. Just watch the pathing in places. Some mobs that you think will come directly to you seem to take the long route getting to you, accumulating friends along the way. Use a monk to FD just in case.

Also, get your MR up. Numerous mobs trying to fear and some casting dots as well.

Nice Mana on it
# Oct 09 2001 at 3:51 PM Rating: Good
Well, after all is said and done, the snare is a bonus as far as I am concerned. Being a 56 druid with a 200 wisdom, this is a fine earring with 35 mana. I am using Golden Black Sapphires now and they are 35 mana, 25 hps. I can get the same mana, more hps, and littel AC, and a free spell. A worthwhile item to me so if you get one on Cazic-thule, look up Ahlanna. I will pay you nicely for it.

snare...
# Oct 09 2001 at 2:47 PM Rating: Default
Hmmm... for the effect they get one of the first spells both these classes get. What is the cost of snare , like 15 mana? whats the great advantage here?
Effects of spells a class already has is pretty cool. But giving effects of spells they DON'T have is really really really cool.
Feels like they just threw this one in there so druids and rangers won't say, "hey where are our items with effects?" Ok here you go, happy?
It very be there is an advantage here. in wich case i welcome these. If not then I am sorry this is the best they can think of.
RE: snare...
# Oct 09 2001 at 3:19 PM Rating: Default
Snare is a useless spell once you get Ensnare. Unless this is instacast or less than 3 seconds, I wouldn't bother with it. Once ensnare is on, it's good for 10+ minutes. Then again, as a druid, the earring alone kicks the crap out of Black Sapphire earrings, so I'd use it anyway. :)

However, I would only use ES Gaunts if I were out of mana (tanglewood shield plz, keke la~)
RE: snare...
# Oct 09 2001 at 3:31 PM Rating: Default
Actually, I always use snare over ensnare. Alot less mana usage, and fast casting. I have always thought that ensnare wasn't really worth memming. Of course I just use my epic to snare now anyway.
RE: snare...
# Oct 09 2001 at 7:18 PM Rating: Decent
snare lasts like 2 mins ensnare about 10, ensnare has faster casting time and ensnare is only 25 more mana than snare, ensnare is much better
RE: snare...
# Nov 29 2001 at 6:58 AM Rating: Default
ACTUALLY, I TESTED THIS ON MYSELF AND A MOB LAST EVENING. THE EFFECT FROM THE EARRING LASTED 3MINS 20SECONDS IN BOTH CASES. PERHAPS ITS BASED ON LEVEL (IM 57).

ENSNARE LASTS MUCH LONGER, HOWEVER SNARE NO LONGER LASTS 2MINS, AT LEAST FOR HIGHER LVLS. YOU CANNOT USE THIS EFFECT UNTIL 49/50 ANYHOW.

OUTSIDE OF THE STATS, YOU CANNOT PUT A PRICE ON FREEING UP A CASTING SLOT. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ITEMS LIKE ES GAUNTS = GAY.

Call me lazy, but as a fairly high Ranger (High enough to have both snare, ensnare, and tolans gaunts) but since I got my gaunts I never have snare or ensnare memmed unless requested, I never solo so a 10 min ensnare isnt very practical when your killing mobs in KC or Velks Lab in under 1 min. I hate sitting and opening my spell book just to mem and unmem spells and love to have the extra slot open for other spells and just using my tolans gaunts to snare mobs, just too damn easy for myself, and when I get some better AC gaunts, I wouldnt mind one of these adorning my ears.

Wrake.
RE: snare...
# Oct 10 2001 at 8:03 PM Rating: Default
Tolan's Gaunts are a different story. They're good ranger gloves (decent AC). AC is important to rangers more than druids (rangers can actually get AC; druids cannot). ES gloves are high weight, low AC, and take six? seconds to cast snare. Coldain Gloves simply blow them out of the water, and personally, I'm lazy, so I like to go ahead and lay on all my DoTs and debuffs at the beginning of a fight (when they're most effective), so Ensnare is my choice (WILL last the whole fight). Also, Coldain Gloves give enough mana to cast Ensnare a dozen times over. Hopefully I'll get a Tanglewood Shield and free up that spell slot. >:)
RE: snare...
# Oct 09 2001 at 3:02 PM Rating: Decent
The problem with giving classes items with other classes spells on them is balance. The advantage to having snare on this earring, frees up a spell slot. How many druids/rangers ALWAYS have snare or ensnare mem'd? Probably close to all of them. This gives them a spell slot back.

To Master Jerker, you might turn into a high elf to turn in the Prince of Chardok's head for the Chalice of Kings, part of your epic. Or as a human or erudite to get infravision.
