I would guess you can use it to make bricks of fine steel ore. Try it in a forge with a water flask, and let us know the result!

so, after reading all this and posting a couple times, im only left with one question (unfortunately all the other questions i never asked and didnt need to know were answerd taking up most of the few living brain cells in my head) all i really wanted to know when i looked this item up and read through all the posts was, is this a good weapon for a lvl 5-10 ranger? (good as in worth the pp in the game, not good is it worth going to the local knife and sword store to pay a couple hundred dollars for one)
RE: just one question

Just look at it. 28 Delay.. decent. 7 Damage.. decent.

Not like you'd do much more damage then 20 pre-level 10 so get it if you can. Nothing special though. I got a Bronze one since it looks very cool.
weight
# Jan 09 2002 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
i know this has nothing to do with the katana ...but neather did any one else who posted but "stones" as every one calls them ...why i dont know only weight 2 pounds ech i only know this cus i get bord sometims and fish and in FV you can catch fish that have pound weights a 10 pound bass weights 5 "stones" thus making the katana weigh 17 pounds ...not that far fetched......thats all im done with my rant you can go on now

I personally find that I have no problem weilding my katana, or my nodachi with one hand, and do so in combat, not just katas. As for the speed do you know just how much you slow down when having to use two hands, besides the fact the you loose balance and movement. I will probably get flamed for this, but I fought lots of KENDO Artists, and they have no clue about real combat. They think that because they follow a code of conduct, that their oponenet is also going to do so. Well that is not the case in a real duel. And especially not in mass melee. In a real fight you would be suprised just what you can do I have weilded a Yari on handed.
Well that's my 2cp worth

fast cuts with a weapon made like a katana is risky. Sure you can pull a cut off faster, but you have less discipline in your movements. A poorly-made cut with a katana can result in pretty severe damage to the sword. Using two hands gives better control and good control with a high-quality katana can cut through pretty much any target. One-handed with a katana is a perfectly valid style if you think you can pull it off, but remember that the katana and especially the no-dachi were originally meant to be handled primarily with two hands. Kenjutsu as a whole is an exercise in self-discipline, and this is reflected in the nature of the sword.

P.S. Carry a no-dachi with one hand? Sure. Wield one effectively with one hand? Bullcrap.

Finally, they made a fine steel Katana. The idea of the bronze one was just funny and laughable. Samurai may have used these but I want to see more trolls and ogres carrying them.

Any idea on how much these sell for or where they come from in the zone?

If only they would make a King's Katana of Haste, be just like old times.

If I have a stack of fishies and each one weighs .5 stones, and I take one fishie out of the stack making it nineteen fishies and one fishie. Now I have fishies weighing one stone. Now I take out a fishie from my nineteen fishies. Now I have 1.5 stones of fishies. Now I take out a fishie from my eighteen fishies. Now I have two stones of fishies. If I go on separating fishies and getting heavier, what is the heaviest I can get continuing this thing of getting heavier by moving apart my fishies? God bless humanity.

First and foremost, the concept of an ogre is a fantastical one, so why can't a spell, originating from the fabric of chaos surrounding the world of Norrath, allow for him or her to levitate? Yes, a nice D&D throwback that the creators placed in the game for us old time gamers.

Second of all, the katana can be utilized in either hand, or with both, both hands being the prefered, but not only, attack focus. The ****, or hilt, is designed so as to balance both the blade and the tang of the blade, allowing for greatest cutting force on the edge. Having taken Kendo for a number of years, I know this for a solid fact.

And just a side note for the person that was refering to his/her shidoshi wielding a larger type of katana, the weapon is known as the no-dachi, which was created for the foot soldier to effectively fight both mounted soldiers and the pikemen in stance, from a safe distance.

That having been said, for a FS weapon, this is actually fairly impressive for the mid ranged people that are hunting the zone with their main character. All told, not bad in the least, although I wouldn't mind it if they somehow placed molds for these weapons in the game. Be fun to make enchanted versions, and what not. :)
its a game
# Sep 30 2001 at 4:38 AM Rating: Decent

Well I used to practice in Iaijitsu Iai-do or whatever you wanna call it. Anyway yes you can use two hands to weild your weapon and yes you can use only one. Typically you wanna go for one hit kills so drawing your blade with one hand and slashing across the eyes of your opponent will be faster. But on the other hand if your hacking up something with a sword for a long time (like most warriors do in EQ) you dont want to be doing it one handed. Katanas are on the light side (compared to a european broadsword) but they are still a long bar of steel which is very heavy, Ive also seen my sensei weild really big katanas that weighed a ton, that just proves not all of them are the same. As far as in game, petition if it makes you so angry... or deal with it.
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 29 2001 at 8:22 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Samurai, the most pronounced warriors of Feudal Japan, wielded katanas with 1 hand, their wakizashi in the other, and a tanto as their last resort weapon.
RE: Both 1H and 2H
# Jul 19 2003 at 7:42 PM Rating: Default
Back to the original poster, no they didn't. Most samurai used a katana with two hands, wakizashi as a back-up weapon, and a tanto as more of a survival knife. Miyamoto Musashi was the first recorded samurai to use the katana in one hand and the wakizashi in the other, and while this style did spread considerably, the traditional style was always in the majority. Yes, I study kenjustu. No, I don't have a time machine to go back in time and take a picture of samurai in actual combat. Deal with it :).

1 question : why those realistic feudal japan weaps from real world in this fantasy game ?

5 answers :

- why not ?

- hey guys you're wielding claymores, battle axes, spears, battle hammers and don't complain so why are you whinning about katanas and naginatas ?

- as my 51 SK, I gave up my exquisite velium battle axe for a brand new naginata from chardok (got damn lucky on this roll) and I can tell you I'm WAY more stylish with this baby than with my previous gay-looking axe :)

- almost everytime I'm the only one in the zone wielding a naginata and I feel real good thinking I don't look like a clone of a standard SK

- stats are gooood :p

Now guys stop whinning and try to enjoy the game :)

Anyone who says a katana could be used in real life by a person effectively with one hand on a mass level, has never actually swung one, much less in combat, virtual or real.

That being said, The big factor in weight of weapons and items in game is in no way meant to be realistic. If it was realistic tink bags would suddenly become obselete. Heck, I dare you to even try jumping across a river carrying ten backpacks full of water.

It's meant to be used so certain items weight is considered before carying it. Certain items are not stackable, because they don't want you carrying 1600 of them for example.

#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 28 2001 at 8:46 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) If you notice some of the new fish that can be caught, they have names like "12 lb fish" or "10 lb fish". The corresponding weights for these fish are 1.0 and 1.2. So one can say that a stone is 10 lbs. Which is quite insane since that would make this weapon 85 lbs =). What a world hehe.
RE: Stones -> Pounds
# Sep 28 2001 at 11:49 AM Rating: Good
Best not to try to figure out VI's logic on the weight issue. 8.5 pounds would be logical for a katana. 8.5 stones wouldn't be logical nor realistic. (Stone=14 pounds) Imagine dueling with a 116 pound sword.

I'd guess that the weight system is purely designed to encourage logical weapon decisions in regards to fatigue. They intentionally make food and some quest items incredibly light because they Do Not want that to play a factor. A Meal is a good bit of food unless you're counting McDonalds as a meal. 60 flasks of water is pretty heavy in real life, but it would be bad game design to make that a factor in the game.

So don't think about weight. It makes my eye twitch to ponder it.

In reference to the sword, it's pretty good I think. 7/28 isn't a bad weapon to help keep weapon skills up if you left the appropriate type in the bank. (Like I did last night. I wound up using a bamboo stick of some type to practice.)

I'm so sick of hearing, this weapon is not real, this is how it should be done. This is too heavy, this is too light, it is historically 1-handed, it is historically 2-handed, and i for one don't give a jack about how you know abt Japanese history nor do i care. And that goes for Medieval history as well. I don't care if you think the Claymore is not depicted in game correctly.
More often than not, if you post about "Oh this weapon should be like this and like that because i own one, and i collect them and i use them therefore i have a large **** and know everything about the universe." it is more often for you to read, coz i am sure the discerning crowd here wants to know about a Fine-Steel Katana, not a Real-World Katana.

For example, for my contribution for RELAVENT INFORMATION, this drops off Highland Kobolds and Raging Highland Kobolds, those pale white larger kobold dudes, who also have a chance of dropping Etched Iron Armour, armour, which is essentially the same as Cold Iron dropped by King Gragnar but 1AC higher.
I don't want to hear about real-world crap associations with any in-game items coz that's just BS. Next you'll say, No i think Half-elves in the real world should be less muscular than as depicted in the game, or that in the real world context, Trolls don't exist, so all those lvl60 Troll Shamans and SK and Warriors should just be deleled.

I agree if the people in question are trying to relate RL katana to EQ katana, but if their just discussing RL katana, then I really don't see a problem. Just ignore it, or if it really bothers you that much, give them an awful rating.

Nodachi

During the Kamakura and Nambokucho period, tachi of extended length were sometimes used on the battlefield. Those swords certainly had an intimidating effect on the enemy.

This sword is only 2 handed because of the lenght. Which is about 1 to 2 1/2 feet longer than a katana. A katana is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet long and could be weilded in one hand. I'm not saying your statement about Miyamoto Musashi was wrong because I know of the story. I'm just saying that there was a larger sword worthy of the 2 handed class, as for me I am mastering the 1 handed katana. It is posible to make it effective 1 handedly, but hey this is a game and I thank them for puting the sword in, I love em.

Here's an idea to warp Verant's little minds. Make it an optional 1hs or2hs. If you only have the katana equipped it acts as a 2hs. If you have it and a shield it acts as a 1hs.
The stats as a 2hs could be: 9 damage and 26-24 delay (due to the 2 hands and the actual speed granted by them)
1hs could be: 7 damage 27-28 delay (but being able to use 2 at once would even it out a bit)
This way Verant could have a UNIQUE item in that it could be used as either one handed or two handed slash. As a bonus Verant could introduce a smaller weapon that would effectively reduce the attack speed of the primary weapon (such as the smaller version of the katana{forgive me as I forget the name}). The shorter sword would have really no damage to speak of (3-5) but would reduce the delay of the katana by 4-8. This would be an AWESOME idea if Verant would actually listen to it's customers.
RE: Not exactly true...

Katanas are, in fact, used quite impresivly in a 2 handed technique. The 2 handed maner was used when fueding leaders were to duel. Dueling took, sometimes, many hours. Both men sizing each other up and looking for weaknesses untill the ONE, deciding blow was dealt. They are most effectivly weilded when paired with the shorter version wakasashi blade. Used mainly as a parrying blade, the wakasaski was held only in the left, or off, hand. Oh and please don't try to impress us by saying "I'm in the process of mastering" anything. It only makes you look like an idiot and the real martial artists like saps. Learning to "master" anything, weither it be a technique or weapon style, should be done in private as any self respecting MA should know. Now that we all put in our 2 cents and making ourselves look like dopes, myself included, perhaps we'll drop this subject as it really proves nothing. I'm sure everyone else would agree.

Katanas are wielded with two hands. The are not meant to be one handed weapons. The only historical fencer to every use a katana in one hand was Miyamoto Musashi, when he killed the emporors royal guard. He lured them out into the woods where he ambushed them and drew two katanas. Otherwise a Katana is wielded with two hands too effectively get the speed required for the vicious cross slashing style that is typical of the Kenjutso style.

Blah Blah Blah...... traditional katana fighting styles include one and two handed stances. somebody read a history book or a book on fighting with katanas and stop making a book about a sword on a game (not to be confused with real life) and if you cant handle that, talk about it in a chat room instead of a post section for people trying to find out about the weapon in a game, sorry for the long message on this ****** subject, but i swear, i wont make anymore......

p.s. werent fencers those french dudes wearing tight wite suits with funny lookin face screens and those long bendable swords called rapiers? now exuse me while i go see what people have to say about those on this site....

Hehe, you're gonna love this QuishenTchar. Actually the term "fencer" could be applied to anyone engaging in a dual with swords. While the styles and the swords are very different, the French fencers and Japanese fencers were, in essence, doing the same thing; engaging in a dual with swords. And so another block of the unrelated information tower is added! MUAHAHAHA!
