May I ask a simple question to sort this out. To use the item the item has to be held in the primary slot or does it have to be hanging on the cursor?

it has to be equipped, or else you're going to end up dropping it or giving it to some npc. I'm not sure why it has Reclaim energy on it, though, since it's a lvl 1 casty spell that for me (lvl 11) doesn't do anything so far but TAKE mana AWAY (but not much anyways). You right click it, I beleive, to do that spell

OK, this item now has a listed focus effect: minion of water.

My mage is only level 15, and when I cast the water pet spell, the focus effect on my summoning haste item, makes the item shimmer. However, the stien doesn't do a thing. It would seem to me, that at least at this point, this item doesn't work at low levels. Also, when I right click the stein, to try to reclaim the pet, I get the message that I am unable to use the item.

The Lucy info has two different items worth noting. The focus effect info says levels 4 to 49, however, the item info for the stien says level for effect is 20. I am going to level my mage up to 20, and check the stein each level, to see if and when I start getting a message when I summon the pet.

Not saying it DOESN'T affect the low level pets, although I have not noticed a difference. I think now that it has an actual listed focus effect, we should be able to narrow this down.

Semantics I suppose, focus was known of at least since 2001. "Listed" here may have came later of course.

What to do:
Talk to Vira (Gnome p415,p90, per EQATLAS near #7) in Temple of Solusek Ro to get the info on 4 items she needs for each quest you are doing for each of the 4 Mage pet focus items.

Hints:
None of the items are no-drop, so the best thing to do is hit the vendors in the surrounding areas first or auction in the zone. Go to OOT and check vendors for toes, if none there try Everfrost, and then try Nejena (go to the floor where you get the 3rd key and kill those mages) then buy needed gem and go to back to Vira.

The main items broom, torch, stien & shovel drop from mobs called 'An Alligator' the Swamp Alligators do not drop them.
------------------------------------------------
Shovel of Ponz (increases size and power of Earth Elementals above level 34) requires:

A Shovel-Magician (9-24) in Najena or "An Alligator" (18-34) in Cazic Thule or Feerrott.
Eye of Gargoyle-Mistmoore (level 22-36) or Gargoyles in OOT (level 18-20).
Toes of a Hill Giant--in EK, NK, or WK, Rathe Mountains, WC (level 33-37), or Gornit in OOT.
A Ruby-from vendor.
------------------------------------------------
Torch of Alna (increases size and power of Fire Elementals above level 34) requires:

Fire Drake Scale-Fire drake (level 9-11) in Lavastorm Mountains.
Fire Giant Toes-Fire Giants are in SolB (level 47-51) or Gornit in OOT.
Torch-Magicians (level 9-24) in Najena and Alligators (level 18-34) in Feerrott.
Fire Emerald-from vendor.
------------------------------------------------
Broom of Trilon (increases size and power of a summoned Air Elementals above level 34) requires:

Griffen Feather-most any griffens near Karanas or vendors in Rathe, NK, and probably Jaggedpine.
Cyclops Toes-SeaFuries in OOT (level 39-42) and Cyclops in SK, RM, WK (level 28 - 42) or Gornit in OOT.
Broom-Magicians (level 9-24) in Najena and Alligators (level 18-34) in Feerrott.
Star Ruby-from vendor.
------------------------------------------------
Stien of Ulissa (increases size and power of a summoned Water Elementals above level 34) requires:

Mermaid scale-Sirens on the spires in OOT
Ice Giant Toes-Ice Giants in Everfrost Peaks or from Gornit.
Stien-Magicians in Najena and Alligators in Feerrott, Magicians (level 9 -24) and Alligators (level 18-34).
Sapphire-from vendor.

Some of Agonizer's infomation here is helpful, but some is outdated.

Cazic Thule has been upgraded to a high level zone. Go to Najena to get the "A Broom", "A Shovel", "A Torch" and "A Stein". They drop from "A Magician" and "A Goblin Magician".

Don't worry if you don't have keys to unlock doors in Najena. You really don't need to.
Someone posted they got one of the items from one of the skeletons in Najena. My opinion is that they're a much more common drop from the magicians. Of course the skellies will attack you anyway, so do check their corpses.

While killing the magicians in Najena, you'll most likely see some of the torn pages of mastery. Keep them as they're for the epic.

Good luck, young magicians!

This Quest is given by Vira in the Temple of Solusek Ro. A good write up on all four focus items can be found on the page for the Torch of Alna. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=694

#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 22 2001 at 5:05 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You can get a no drop item to another character if you have two accounts and you get the character with the no drop item killed then give consent to your other character to loot it's corpse.. Simple.

Focus Items below level 34
# Jun 17 2001 at 1:40 PM Rating: Decent
Focus Items DO work on pets below level 34. BTW, the reclaim energy effect is triggered, not a proc. I completed the quests with my mage at level 12. pets cast with the Foci are noticably larger than pets of the Same level cast without.
Hey Cani...
# Jun 15 2001 at 5:55 AM Rating: Default
BTW, How did you give a no-drop item to your twinked mage?
RE: Hey Cani...
# Jun 17 2001 at 12:24 PM Rating: Decent
Well what i would do is Give all Items to the twink and then go turn them in, none of the quest items are no drop. Oh, and the stein dose increase the power of all water pets of any lvls untill the epic item.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 06 2001 at 1:07 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Focus Items only work on pets form level 34. JEEZUS Cani you GOTTA lay off the CRACK girl !!
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 06 2001 at 1:01 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The proc does not work at level 9. My level 21 Mage has had this item for 6 level (twinked) and has never had it go off. lay off that loco weed Cani hehehe

The effect is right clicked, not proc'ed as it seems to me you are thinking.

Click and hold the left mouse button on the weapon slot with inventory open and drag it to a hotkey slot. That way you can trigger the reclaim energy effect without having to go to your inventory. Target your pet first and hit the hotkey you just made and you get a decent chunk of your mana back. :)

And I did try it before even making the post below, so I know for sure that you CAN use the effect on the Stein at level 9.

Hope this clears things up. :)

Quoting magecompendium.com on these focus items:

Note: Focus Items only have to be held while summoning an elemental to be effective, there is no minimum player level for these items to be used.

Focus Items will only function on summons from level 4 to 49, Staffs of Elemental Mastery will function on summons from level 49 to 60 (Not including the Decoy summons). The four focus objects available from the Temple of Solusek Ro enhance particular attributes of a pet. Because each pet has inherent natural attributes, each focus object works differently on each pet type.

Earth Elementals : Shovel of Ponz
These pets have the most hit points of any pet. Because of this the focus objects do not add any extra hit points to the pets. Rather the pets get extra strength, agility and other stats to help them dodge a little better and hit for higher damages.

Water Elementals : Stein of Ulissa
A Water Elemental summoned with a focus object obtains the same number of hit points as an earth elemental of the same level summoned with no focus object. They also receive boosted stats.

Air Elemental : Broom of Trilon
An Air Elemental summoned with a focus object gets a hit point bonus making it have approximately the same hit points as a water elemental summoned without a focus object of the same level. They receive less statistical bonus than the water elemental.

Fire Elementals : Torch of Alna
A Fire Elemental summoned with a focus object gets a hit point bonus making it have approximately the same hit points as a air elemental summoned without a focus object of the same level. They receive around the same statistical bonuses as the air elemental.

In summary each elemental becomes more powerful than the one before it when you use the focus objects. Some receive more hit points than others. Some receive more statistics than others. Simply put a pet summoned with the focus object will be better than a pet summoned without one, and it is certainly worth doing the quests to obtain the items. Mage Focus Items must also be held during summoning in order to be effective.
Cool

Interesting comment, considering the popularity of water pets since I started playing about 4 years ago.

Of course the comment was made by a non magician so (shrug) what can one expect.
