#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 16 2003 at 4:48 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Why did these loosers start talking about real swords, this is about boots, not swords in game, not swords in real life specialy, its a damn game, and now those boots are kinda sucky, and bards can use them..... no one is going to read this!!! so who cares!!!!

you won't even come near them boots for a few levels, young padawan ;-)

with my current gear I have 96 weight out of 183...20 more stones of weight don't hurt much..
sure, a monk might object to that, but then...these boots are not wearable by a monk... :)

Stone/Weight
# Sep 05 2001 at 8:21 AM Rating: Good
I'm glad one other person on this thread has a dictionary. 1 "Stone"= 14 lbs. So if you think these boots weight 350 pounds, someone needs a doctor.

I've never seen a 250 pounds sword either. If you think that's what swords weighed, goto a gym, pick up JUST the barbell. That weighs 15 pounds. Now tell me, do you think people went to war with something weighing 15x that in weigh? How about duelled with that? Hell a leper with a sharp spoon could out duel someone trying to swing a steel tree.

Nice boots btw :) Odd that they're not no-drop and come from ToV though.

umm, bud, the large claymores of scotland easily weigh 15 pounds, the ability to swing it is assisted by the balance of the sword. even a classic long sword weighed 5-7 pounds. the big swords were introduced to allow someone on foot to dismount a mounted knight. or to allow penetration/damage thought the armors. it was later that the thin swords, like the epee, rapier, and foil were developed to find the nooks and crevices of the armor and allow for killing blows by more maneuverable opponents, this is around the period of the renaissance, when the gun is also starting to make an appearance. the combination doomed the classical armord knight into a relic.

please know your history before you talk.
RE: Stone/Weight
# Feb 20 2003 at 1:28 PM Rating: Excellent
Um, bud, I am really wondering where you get your weight information on claymore and other swords. As someone who owns several authentic medieval swords and who has handled a goodly number of them, I can attest to the fact that few single handed swords weighed more than 3 lbs., few hand and a half swords more than 5 lbs., and few two-handed swords more than 8 or 10 lbs. Claymores tended to be in the 8 to 10 lb. range. There were a few continental two-hand swords that weighed in the range of 15-20 lbs (examples can be seen in the Rathaus in Munster, Germany) but these were primarily ceremonial. A heavy sword is not especially good for combat as it is a) slow... b) very tiring to use. And your description of a foil as a renaissance weapon is absurd. It is a late 17th century practice weapon designed to mimic the characteristics of the court sword that came into fashion at that time. And it is useless against armor. Perhaps you should read a little of Pope's poetry. Specifically, A little learning is a dangerous thing, drink deep or taste not the Prierian spring. There shallow drafts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again.
RE: Stone/Weight
# Jun 18 2002 at 2:08 PM Rating: Decent
Good points. He did say 15x 15 pounds, though, which would make a 225 pound sword. My knowledge of medieval weaponry is admittedly weak, but I tend to doubt whether there were any 225 pound swords being wielded in battle, successfully anyway.

Yes, you're RIGHT! Verant HATES bards with a burning, fervant passion. In fact, I have it on good authority that about 95% of the melee items are SPECIFICALLY designed with stats that would appeal to bards only...get this...THEY CAN'T WEAR THEM! That's casue they want ALL the bards in the game to get fed up and QUIT. Isn't that ingenious?! They really DO just want to ***** over bards! /cackle

Look, STFU treehugger. While I'm not saying VI intentionally screws over bards, they do need to fix this. Why can a cleric wear and not a bard? A bard is a plate class, and is the ONLY plate class excluded here, for no discernable reason.

RE: Bards
# Mar 19 2002 at 9:07 PM Rating: Decent
Come on now, leave the treehugger alone LOL. I wonder if bards are excluded because of the crazy weight on these boots? Even with the +10 str, that puts A_Bard_X at +15 weight JUST on the boots. Just a thought, I think it would be great for any plate class. Good stats, great ac, hell i'd want them too if I was a bard.
RE: Bards
# Feb 26 2003 at 10:57 PM Rating: Decent
Weight is NOT a problem as a bard....

I currently have a 20wt Cloak of the Maelstrom, 25wt Chestplate of Vindication and am looking forward to getting sometime in the future, a 25wt Girdle of Dark Reflection from NToV.

I currently have about 180 str unbuffed and can easily hit 260 (cap at 61 without planar power) buffed. As you can see, a few weighty items (armor + weapons + instruments = 115wt or so) dont really mean that much - except when im carrying a new stock of cool looking weapons from Gunthak to a raid (but the raid buffs still overcome that).

I dont really think anyone should worry about weight except monks and casters, everyone else generally has enough strength for one or two (or even four or five wouldnt be too much strain) bulky items and should not be put off on an item because of it.

You're right, bards usually do count as plate classes... But last I checked, the item was listed as a Warrior, Cleric, Paladin, and Shadow Knight item, not a "PCL" (plate class 3 letter abreviation possiblity) item...

On a side note, notice the 25 weight. Although by the time one could even get this item or even think about it, the 25 weight (sort of 15 since +10 str) wouldnt matter anymore.

Measurement in weight
# Sep 01 2001 at 4:11 AM Rating: Default
Yea that would be about correct..because in Norath things are measured in lbs.. but in stones like england does to this day still. So yes they would weight quit abit of poundage. If one does some research you will find that most two handed swords weight well over the 150lb limit.. a real knight or Viking must have had arms like a freaking tree trunk..lol.

OK, Minored in Medieval blah blah. Post bronze age swords tended to weigh a LOT less than people seem to think. LESS than 5 lbs for single handed and less than 10 for all but the huge zweihanders (which were used more to break pikes than people) These weapons were used in battles that sometimes lasted for hours, not the more duel-like combat we see in EQ. A 90 pound sword is a joke, first you would be SO slow that a peasant levy with a fire hardened pointy stick could kill you, and barring that, you would be exhausted before ANY serious engagement was complete. The weights are MEANINGLESS, this is a computer game, not a realistic simulation of combat ( which would be messy and dull) dont sweat the weights, dont try to make sense of them, just have FUN.
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 01 2001 at 1:30 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ok. First, things are measured in STONES in Norrath. Not lbs. That's the US you're talkin about there buddy. I realize you may not get out much, but try to keep the two separate. Now, I'm not real sure where you got your info from on those swords, but not a whole lot of them weighed over 150 lbs. A lot of them were actually pretty light. And besides that, the guy that was talking about the Ghoulbane... Yeah, that's a one hand slashing weapon. You go ahead and tell me where you saw a 90lbs one handed sword. Get back to me when you do.
RE: Measurement in weight
# Sep 02 2001 at 9:22 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know exactly how much it weighed, (hell, what was I gonna do, go grab some scales?) but I have wielded a one-handed medieval-ish sword and it was pretty weighty. Not sure it would've been 90lbs but still, I wouldn't like to have had to actually use it in a real battle, I could barely lift it as it was :-)

(PS. if yer wonderin what i was doing with said sword, it was for a theatre production)
RE: Measurement in weight
# Sep 02 2001 at 3:21 PM Rating: Decent
As a measure to compare by, your average bag of cement mix weighes in the neighborhood of 90lbs. Trot on down to your local Home Depot or Payless Cashways and heft one of those bad boys and tell me that any functional sword would or could weigh anything near that.

Also remember that there is a big difference between a sword some guy ground out of a piece of rebar in shop class and a forged, hammered and folded piece of art from a blacksmith's forge.

I can speak from exp on this one, theres NO WAY a person could wield a 90 pound 1hs. I've worked in 2 types of medieval re-enactments. 1 with very light weight swords (3-4 pounds) and no armor. FAST moving 3-4 minute fights and you are wore smooth out afterwards. the other re-enactment full plate armor (75-100 pounds) weapons forged the way they were in the medieval period (range in weight from 5-15 pounds, some of the 2h axes were more) very SLOW fights lasting 5-10 minutes and you feel like your gonna die :)

WHO CARES ABOUT WEIGHT CONVERSION!!! Lets go on the premise that these items all weigh an inexorbament amount, wouldn't it go to say that you are playing a fantasy game in which you are supposed to be a hero/villian. If so, then wouldn't it be prudent to say that as a hero or villian you would have qualities to set you above and beyond the average person and could possibly lift something extremely heavy. My god people its if you are trying to base EQ on real life then NONE of it would be possible.
boots
# Aug 31 2001 at 11:47 PM Rating: Decent
At the level of play that you can obtain these, the weight of that piece of armor means absolutely nothing, you'll most likely be buffed or have enough +str on other gear to make up for it. BTW i think these are off of King Tormax instead of in TOV
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 01 2001 at 5:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) but 25 pounds mean 25 pounds of stuff you can't bring back to sell.. I don't know about this level of play? I mean I never been up there. but if there is something where i can loose a little stats for less weight I would do it but that might just be me..
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 31 2001 at 9:10 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Great item.. if you get the STR (Notice you only need 15 points of str in addition to the boots str)

The only problem is in game the unit of weight has been shown to equal 10lbs per unit of weight that would mean these boots weigh 250lbs :)
RE: You Know
# Aug 03 2002 at 6:08 PM Rating: Default
Stone is game is just a unit of meserment. 1 stone in game would = 1 stone, 1 pound, 1 ton, 1 gram. they did this so that there is a way we can talk to ppl with out trying to convert from metric to the right way LOL. JK :)
RE: You Know
# Aug 31 2001 at 10:44 PM Rating: Decent
"in game the unit of weight has been shown to equal 10lbs per unit of weight "

So you're telling me that a Ghoulbane weighs over 90 pounds? And that a simple BACKPACK weighs 30 pounds?

That means these boots would weigh 250 pounds....Gravity on Norrath must be like the moon! I must be superman, as I routinely walk around with over 1000 pounds of stuff on me, according to this guy's "proven" beliefs--and I'm just a human.

Get real!

I think it's MUCH more likely that the weight in the game is merely a gameplay device intended to limit the amount of a certain item a person can carry, and to make certain items more desirable than others. It does NOT appear to be meant to represent any actual system of measurement, real or fantasy.

Hmm, I was fishing in Cabilis with my Iksar, and I fished up a 15lb Fetid Bass (that is the actual ID on it) and it said Weight: 1.5... 1 stone on Norrath is 10LB. which means all players are Supermen, even those weak High Elves.

I agree. I am sure that the stone in game is much more like one pound, it is just a balancing device

But for FYI

stone : any of various units of weight; especially : an official British unit equal to 14 pounds (6.3 kilograms)

"Stone" used to be one tenth of the queen of England's wieght ... so when ever England got a new queen the wieght of the stone changed. Must of been rough during Henry the VIII day.

Stats on these are great, but wow, 25 weight. Why'd they bother to put cleric on the equippable classes. Of course all the stats scream melee anyway, but no cleric I can imagine will be wearing these. No wonder they have AC +35 they must be 6" thick.

25 weight is fine for a cleric, i speak from friends experience and from my own intuition. A cleric should not be up and running his/her *** off after a mob, they should be on their *** meding! Any person that thinks otherwise is 6" think.
