ok...44 mage spell?
# Apr 22 2002 at 9:31 AM Rating: Default
did anyone else notice the name of the guild that posted this? shock of swords, thats a 44 mage spell for gods sake. kinda hard to believe that an AoW compatible guild has the name of a lvl 44 spell.
it could have at least been shock of steel, or shock of firey blades :D

upgraded, and why compare?
# Feb 28 2002 at 8:31 AM Rating: Default
first, this was upgraded to 20 delay and now has a 700 AGRO proc (enraging blow)

second, yes you can compare any weapon with another one. People usually have ALL expansions when they fight AoW.
I know that some people that fought and killed him had warriors using epics along their ranks
One's for sure. The epic sucks for North ToV.
However, there is a point where you can finish a war epic, but the very only mob that drops a real upgrade for it is Vaniki in Dragon Necro. He is ultra rare and raced hard when popped.. I was on ONE Vaniki raid so far. So War epic is an option for many warriors still

However, the new and upgraded one will go to a MT :)
...
# Feb 21 2002 at 10:25 AM Rating: Decent
i dont see what the point is in comparing these weapons vs the war epics? the epics were made before some of these expansions came out. look at it this way, if you can compare this blade to the war epic, then I can compare war hate armor to ntov armor. does that make sense? hell no. theya rent even in the same league. same thing here.

now, if you want to compare the primal vs. this blade i agree with that.

point of it all though is, everyone is different. everyone can make tehir char how they want. for example, if I was playing a bard, i'd choose primal and epic. if a war, i would choose either yield the epics, or dont waste your time with them. the aow is a hella tough bastage, and no matter who will or will not admit it.. as people say, not everyone in the game was meant to get their epic. this is very true. same thing applies here tho. not everyone in teh game will get the chance to fight the aow, or any such mob.

... just being practical

Hmmm. Lot of things have been said about this blade.
Lemme try and shed some light on how this blade is viewed when you actually have it at your grasp.

I am a proud member of the guild Mortalis on Antonious Bayle. Recently we took down the AoW. It was a fantastic fight that I will remember always. I cannot start to express how fortunate I feel to be a member of such a fine guild. Just two months after Mortalis was formed we have AoW bite the dust without any allying guilds assisting. Being just one guild taking AoW down I think is an EQ first :-)

A little about The Avatar of War.
He is a quading flurrying mob, that hits for 1150. With warrior defensive skill I think this is brought down to round 700. AoW has round 500k HP. He has rather high AC so melee dmg is low on him.
AoW's dmg output is insane. If you get aggro you are basically dead in round 1 to 2 secs.
Taking AoW down is a full teameffort and also requires a little striek of luck. Fight is mainly about aggro control, placement, DPS and kickass healers working together to perfection.
We were like 81 ppl when the fight started. This may sound as a high number but we wanted to be sure on the outcome so basically everyone was there. Now discount the 5 or so ppl that went LD in the start of the fight and you have the actual number wich we took him down with. Stating level to attain as 55 seems funny to me. All 81 peeps but 1 were level 60. The slacker were our level 59 guildmascot Cralgar.
Casualties were like 10 deaths overall with just 2 being clicked back in. This leads me to think that with the setup we had, we probably could have succeeded with round 70 ppl. I wouldnt go lower than that. With SoL AA points kicking in sometime in the near future I predict he might be done with round 60 ppl on a more regular basis.
As of now I consider AoW the toughest killable mob in EQ. (But who knows what challenges SoL will unwield for us in the future?)
This info about AoW should put in perspective the risk involved.

Now to the reward.
AoW seems to drop 3 things everytime. According to my knowledge he only has a loot table of 6 items (I am not totally sure of this though). When we killed him, he dropped 2 of these blades and the AC55 Warrior Helmet which is arguebly the best warrior hat in game (some may prefere Hobart's).

We are a guild that uses a pointsystem where we earn points for raids and can spend those points bidding on drops in auctions.
To put things in perspective I can tell that the average Vulak loot goes for around 100 to 120 pts atm. These blades went for 35 and 30 pts if I am not mistaken. Helmet went for around 164 I think.
This should indicate that the attendies at the raid werent actually all that keen on this blade.
Truth be told... Many of the melees have better weapons than this. And no... we dont all have primals... yet :-).
I was the one paying 35 pts to get one of the blades. If I had had a Primal I most likely wouldnt have bid on this one, but since mainly all major encounters is a matter of aggro control, I needed something that wouldnt draw attention as the Earthcaller slowproc does. I was wielding Tolans Longsword of The Glade from Vulak and Earthcaller in mainhand, so I needed an upgrade which this blade provided me (untill primal that is if I should get so lucky :-).

Now what ppl seem to forget about this blade is, that it is dropable. I am not sure of this but I think this is about the best dropable weapon in the game atm for the dualwielding classes that can use.
This fact actually increases the reward value of the blade significantly. So whenever in the future when/if I get an upgrade I can pass this blade on to someone who needs it in guild. Most weapons we get on raids we cannot do this with.
If this blade was to be "no drop" I am sure it would be upgraded somewhat to fit the risk vs. reward.

Only thing that kinda bugs me a little is, that the blade has the totally newb Lammy graphic. I for one would love if the blade had a more unique graphic to match the blades unique quality. After all... It does drop from a most unique mob. To me it wouldnt really matter if the graphic was darn ugly as long as it was unique. (and yes... this may very well be a severe case of vanity ;-)

As of the tactic part, I would like to add that I can assure you there are other tactics to take down AoW than charming giants. And maybe that is what VI's intention was. /shrug.

I have never even participated in a raid this extravagent yet but it seems to me that there was strategy involved originally to kill this uber mob... and if Verant chooses to eliminate strategy and thinking in this game... then what is the point of playing... atleast before they alowed the use of the giants as one person pointed out to kill him... that would be using your brain a bit in using the zone but instead Verant is choosing to eliminate that by not allowing players to enjoy the game... they insist on it being monotanous and horrible... Verant there should be more to this game then (click... click... med... click some more... oops dead)

# Dec 29 2001 at 1:19 PM Rating: Default
Alot of items are better than the warrior epic. I mean, the epics get effects on all of them i think, for example the ragebringer gets haste. On the warrior epic verant decided all warriors would love to waste their effect on something that changes your sword into two swords, or vice versa. With my ogre warrior, im not going to even bother getting my epic unless i'm bored out of my mind....
RE: WOW
# Jan 24 2002 at 3:02 PM Rating: Default
Warrior epic also has real bick DD effect, the reason its not all that good is 14/24 is kinda slow for the taunt that would be wanted and 14/24 isn't all that good considering how hard war epic is.

Im sorry to say, but its a sad sad day for you as a human being when you want to trade a computer for an everquest item that you can only use in the game. its called /camp then you click quit, quit, start button, shut down, then go outside and live life, i played eq every day for at least 4 hours over summer, and when i went back to school, i thought id have major withdrawls, and now i have played a total of about 3 hours in 3 weeks and ya know what? im doing just fine without it. so i suggest that before you go trading real life things for imaginary items in some game created by a soulless corporation, shut down the computer, and read a book, or *GASP!* talk to a girl in real life!! LOL just some food for thought.

Amen. Playing EQ nonstop = a fallout from normal activities, like sports, school, family, and friends.

Now that I can only play EQ during 3 days a week, I actually managed to get straight As, something I hadn't done since 6th grade. You must learn to master EQ, or EQ will become your master.

AoW vs sleepers
# Aug 15 2001 at 7:46 AM Rating: Decent
WTF is the fight about. AoW is one of the badest mobs in the game. He has only been killed twice since velious went live. I saw the screen shots from the first kill on the Nameless server. Bodies were stacked up as far as you can see. Sleepers in raided by several guilds on most servers. Is at least 2 guilds on my server that frequent sleepers whenthey desire. It by no means is a walk in the park. It is however by no means as hard as killing the AoW. If it was then nooone would have primal. All people are saying is for as hard as this guy is, the weapon should be prolly the best in the game. 60 ac monk legs drop off this guy, should the sword be trash?(it isn;t trash but compared to how good the monk legs are compared to other monk legs, the sword however is no great prize compared to other swords)

# Aug 10 2001 at 5:45 AM Rating: Default
Risk vs Reward for this item sucks, badly. The Avatar of War is probably the toughest mob in the game designed to be killed. ToV dragons are much easier due to dragonbane (Giantbane doesnt work on the avatar, only Vindi/Tormax/Statue).

Anyone capable of getting this will have much greater weapons from ToV or Sleepers. Primal and Priceless drop like candy once you can get to the warders in ST (which any guild who can kill the AoW should).

AoW has been killed twice so far, both with 70+ people and many many deaths, even after using the giants in the arena to tank him. Since that isnt allowed anymore, he's going to be even tougher.

Anyway, main point: this item is horrible for risk vs reward involved. His other drops are much nicer though, ac35 mask, and ac 60 monk pants.

Seriously people... what are we expecting?

My thoughts were the same about the Bard epic, but as someone pointed out, it WOULD take a heck of an effort to take out the AoW. I know several of my friends have fantasized about such things, but their guild was in favor of dropping it for epics, because they were easier to get.

You guys act like you can just walk into Sleeper's Tomb and pick a Primal off the floor!

The Priceless ones drop much more than the Primal ones, and of course, not everyone in the group(S) is going to get themselves a Primal. C'mon people, I know that Verant may not give out the best in terms of Risk vs. Reward, but what are you expecting?

It says a bard can use this, and it is very similar to the Bard epic. My question is, which would be harder to get? For that matter, imagine using the epic in one hand, and this in the offhand...add haste item...I think I'm going to pass out.

OK,
AoW drops a 15/23 +stats 1 hander, which at that delay will most likely be used as an offhander. AoW = Arguably one of the 3 hardest mobs in the game.

Eashen of the Sky in ToV drops a 14/18 offhander with effect:haste. Eashen = Relative pushover for a larger guild to kill.

No rocket science involved to figure which is better, even for offhand.

Add to that a very major after-the-fact nerf of Vulak's weapon drop.

To that add the fact that you now can't charm the majority of giants in Kael => AoW WILL go unkilled for a long long time, if ever killed again (doubtful).

Not that 15/23 sucks, but anyone else see the problem here?

VI does not want their ubers dead yet. All methods used against AoW were perfectly legit, no question about it. So, they changed the rules.

I'm not normally a naysayer and it's the first time I've said anything on a public board, but VI really really needs to pull their head out of their *** lately.
RE: ??
# Aug 06 2001 at 11:48 AM Rating: Default
Maybe the sword has Sentimental value to the AoW?
His dad gave it to him on his 16th birthday?

As far as VI not wanting their Highest level creatures dead, that's cool. If they need to cheat to do it, that's not cool. (re: waking the sleeper in the middle of a fight debate) Anything else; nerfing, modifying, cranking the power of the mob is all fair game. Do you do the same thing over and over if you always die doing it? (well, some of you do, I've watched you do it) Neither does Verant.
I personally like the idea of a creature so damned tough that it simply will not be beaten if all 2500 people on a server jumped on it. (Send all 'But it's not fair' complaints to your mom, I don't care.) There is something Quixotic about it... Sort of like paying for a game every month when you don't like any of the rewards or risks

dude, stfu. this item sucks with the risk vs reward system that verant supposedly uses. you can go and get a primal which should be easy for a guild that can do aow. i think the drops on the aow should be MUCH better. since he is considered to be one of the hardest mobs in the game, he should drop a whole hell lot of better item then this thing. im not saying this weapon is crap, but it should be dropping off something lesser cause compared to the aow's status, this thing sucks.
RE: ??
# Aug 03 2001 at 10:57 PM Rating: Decent
Agreed, especially when weapons like primal can be obtained with just a few groups, and 13/20 5ac and tons of stats AND avatar proc blows this thing away, and is alot easier to obtain by the time your guild has the power to take out the AoW.

ROFLMAO, any guild big enough to get something like this is gunna have enough respect and honor not to A) Sell it, or B) use it to twink someone. AND, if they did sell it, it would go for A LOT more than 35k... its better than the warrior epic plus more classes can use it... I'd put this around CoF price (probably more because of the rarity)
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 05 2001 at 4:16 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Actually, there's a good chance that if you're in a raid that takes down the Avatar of War, you have better weapons on the character you have there. Someone is dumber than a box of rocks here. Kiros, my dumb friend and pioneer of the ninny poo 2000 great walk-athon, you must not have frequented this place enough to know many people argue over items being great for monks solely by the weight it has.

YOU are clearly overlooking the other guy's sarcasm and attempt of a joke. MOST of us know it's not for monks , but some of us still like to insert our comments on the item even if it doesn't directly tie in as substantial. Clearly, yes, his post was uncalled for but can be easily denounced as a HARHAR. Your post, however, just shows how nieve you are, and it's dashed with a touch of "need-to-go-to-anger management classes".

ANYTHING that is low weight or has zero weight will be food for the monkies.(SOMEONE else explain to him what this means since I'm quite sure he doesn't get it, and I can only stoop so low so many times per day)

I urge you to read more and at least "try" to learn a little. They will teach you the bigger words in middle school if you decide to make it that far. Your comprehensive skills are poor. Your sense of retort is dull, and your posting in it's current state is not welcomed by me when I'm reading through.

NOW, stfu, GET A CLUE, and will someone rate his amd my posts as poor so we all won't need to see this again.

Thanks,
