Warden Jakar says 'Vasha, stranger. I am Warden Jakar. I hope you find our home to your liking. I must ask you to keep your weapons in their sheaths and your spells unspoken while in Crescent Reach. My people have too [many enemies] outside the city to wish for any inside it.'
You say, 'many enemies'
Warden Jakar says 'Well, I can not speak of this in great details, but a wise person will understand more than I can say. Most of our effort is spent keeping the wild animals and other dangerous locals. My duty extends beyond that simple, obvious problem. It is my task to foresee danger from a greater distance. I must deal with [matters] much more difficult.'
You say, 'matters'
Warden Jakar says 'I can not discuss the most intimate details with a stranger, but if you wish to help I can certainly use the assistance. Perhaps you have a preference about which enemy you face? [Goblins] perhaps? Or [gnolls]? Or if you are braver and more skilled, perhaps you will kill some [kobolds] or [orcs] for us. I can only ask the most powerful strangers to battle with the northern [giants], are you one of those? If not, that is fine. Please enjoy the safety of the city while you are here.'
You say, 'goblins'
Warden Jakar says 'I have heard how people from outside the spine speak of goblins. You see them as weak, stupid creatures with little power and of little consequence. We feel much the same, and that is something that worries me. The goblins, like all other races of this valley, were once enslaved by the northern giants. They have learned some tricks during that time, and they may also have [allied] themselves with the gnolls. I would be grateful to you if you could reduce their numbers somewhat. If you have some friends to help I have an additional [task] all of you could undertake against the goblins.'
You say, 'task'
Warden Jakar says 'One of the goblins favorite tactics is to simply attack in overwhelming numbers. A single fighter would not have much chance against these rushes, though with your friends you may be able to defeat them. The goblins are also known to keep a pet bear that is used when they feel they are faced with a stronger enemy. The truth is this bear is quite effective for them. If you could convince the goblins to send this bear against you, and then slay it, it would help us make strides in containing them.'
You say, 'gnolls'
Warden Jakar says 'The Gnolls of the Steppes are cunning and dangerous. I believe that they are responsible for an [alliance] between their tribes and those of the goblins. In the last few years both the goblins and the gnolls have grown more numerous. If there is no alliance between the two, there at least has been a cessation of fighting between them. This has strengthened by both of those tribes and they might soon become a problem for Crescent Reach. You would be doing our small city a service if you could reduce the number of gnolls wondering the Steppes. If you have some friends to help however, there may be a greater task you could [help] us with.'
You say, 'help'
Warden Jakar says 'Amongst the gnolls the basic fighters are easy enough to deal with. It is their elite soldiers that support those fighters that make the battles difficult. We need someone to attack the gnolls and slay several of these elite soldiers. Without them the morale of the gnolls will falter and should make them easy prey for our soldiers.'
You say, 'alliance'
Warden Jakar says 'There have been reports of travelers being ambushed by groups containing both gnolls and goblins. With the two races working together it makes the Steppes a very dangerous place for anyone. Each race alone was enough to cause trouble, but they were manageable. The best [option] I see for us now is to create a rift between the two and set them against each other.'
You say, 'option'
Warden Jakar says 'My spies have reported a visit by a ranking gnoll shaman to the goblin camps. I suspect they are seeking to strengthen the alliance between their races. This gives us the perfect opportunity to shatter their cooperation. . .'
