mana tap?

Is this proc actually a mana tap (siphoning mana from the mob) or does it produce mana from nothing? My cleric has a mana tap weapon from VT which is nice, but you're still relying on the mob having a mana pool and of course it only works for as long as the mob continues to have mana. Theurigst's Star would be extremely useful if it turns out not to be a tap.

From what I see, it's a proc. Not a tap/recourse.

I saw the same thing, so quested it to find out for myself. And yes indeed, you can proc this on mobs without mana, PCs on a duel, and over and over on mobs with a finite mana pool! At level 85 this is still a nice mana boost for certain situations where mana is fleeting, but I do wish I'd got it a long time ago. I consider it a right of passage item for clerics though, and one of those items you will find a use for for years to come.
Just my opinion

All classes have a designed role. I do have a Lvl 70 cleric and soloed her alot of her lvls till around 40 Id say. Clerics can and do malee why do u think we have weapons. And if your dumb enough to toss a cleric that does malee in grp to work their skills as long as grp is healed then one you didnt need a healer/buffer/rezer to start with or you deserve to die. As high lvl no I don't usually malee unless grp isnt in need of alot of heal then I help down the mobs faster is all. Also at 70 u die more no matter what class u are. There has been times I have taken agro can't cast , root , stun didn,t work waiting for aura to pop again and ~btw I keep both aura's loaded~ and have had to malee long enough for main malee to pull it off or I go down and most times so does grp. I replaced my clicky as main primary with a much better stat and lower delay and auged with lifetap as well:) Cleric's can and are capable of so much more given our gear and stats compared to old day's. To malee in the past at times has been what saved my grp. I don't advise clerics to malee we are casters but u must do so to max ur skills , when to malee is all timing. Alts/Hydra's~ include 70bst , 70 enc, 63 wizz, 55 bard(still trying to play it well lol) and 59 ranger , 56 mage, 56 druid and all epiced to name few . I mainly play caster because they are fun to play,I have played had or still have every class except berserker. I am also a guild/raid leader. To all cleric's keep on rockin and GL :)

***So all new cleric's work all skills at low lvl work on malee ~heal timing ,always watch the bar's first and formost. I also solo kited using root , and yes cleric's can kite , come's in real handy when trying to lose a mob long enough to get a heal off lol and everyone else should be more than happy to assist u on this in grps since the result would be hopefully if u are good at the class is one heck of grpee and healer at higher lvls.***

As far as the weapon never did the quest even though I have multi char's. POSKY keyed completely, but considering the choice's we have now it's not bad for low to mid lvl maybe but don't see where it would make much of a differance at high lvl if any at all. Lower lvl I used a combo summoned hammer/soulstripper.

And in defense of the meat shield's for year's and when alot of these post were made, with the gear options we had all u could do was sit and med on a constant, when bracer's came out with 55 stats we almost died it was like OMG uber gear finally. I never thought I would ever hear myself call a 70 - 90 stat peice of gear junk either until now lol.

I have my epic but I can also see where Id use this..for the 25 svd and svp..For those certain dragon raids where SvD and SvP are the important resists. So have this and a Shield of the Green Dragon and its all good Smiley: cool well good hunting and safe journey to all.

Dude, that is one crappy dream bard. Bard's need CHA -- Get STR, STA, AGI, DEX, and CHA to 255 and THEN you can call it a dream bard. :)

I am a 60 cleric, full kael cept BP, Crazy Cleric. All resist 90+, epic, orb of inf void, and lots of other random uber things. I still want this weapon, not only to melee, but to help with manataps on mobs like the blue drakes in ToV, and any other mobs that CH, cast spells we dont want happenin.
I want this
# Oct 29 2001 at 1:50 PM Rating: Default
I'm a 59 cleric with epic, Di'Zok Deathbringer (with which I melee when I'm full mana), sarnak battle shield, prismatic shield, almost full ToV armor, simultaneous resists of 95 to 130 each --- and I still want this, because of the poison and disease resists, which are pretty hard to come by. I think I face a dragon that casts AE Disease or Poison every other day I play, and I would gladly give up a slot in my packs for this.
Item is great
# Aug 23 2001 at 12:44 PM Rating: Decent
This weapon is far more useful than you people give it credit for.

Sure, in a small group it's not great, but the stats aren't all THAT bad.

It's the 3+ group encounters that this item is really, really useful. For example, hunting in ToV.

In high end encounters, a cleric isn't going to just be watching the health bars of his group. He's going to be chain assisting off the mob that you're fighting. Even in the halls of testing, which is relatively sedate compared to the named mobs in ToV, the mobs do enough damage that one cleric isn't really going to be able to keep up with 100% of the healing for the main assist.

What you'll find yourself doing in these types of situations is not medding, but targeting the mob, and chain assisting until you find someone who needs healing. What I do during a fight pretty much can be sumed up as "3, 3, 3, heal, 3, 3, 3, heal, 3, 3, CH, 3, 3, heal..." where 3 is my assist macro key.

With so many people beating on the mob, I very rarely agro, and since the mobs are so big, I'm also usually within melee range of the mob so that I'm in range to heal the rogues back behind them (unless I'm hiding around a corner so I'm not in the AoE). In chain assisting, I have the mob targeted quite a bit, and since assist turns on auto-attack, I hit the mob every once in a while.

If this procs once during a fight that usually takes 2-3 minutes per mob with 3 groups, that MIGHT make the difference between whether I have enough mana for one last CH late in the fight or not.

Say what you will, I don't have my epic yet, and I would GLADLY use this weapon until I did.

#Anonymous, Posted: May 25 2001 at 3:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) are you guys stupid? the resists on this baby are absolutely fantastic.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 25 2001 at 2:37 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Call me crazy but I don't think this item is that great. Even with Boon and 255 dex you really don't proc super often. As a level 57 druid, I can tell you 75 mana is almost nothing, I can cast Skin Like Steel, which is 100 mana, and not see my mana bar move. Personally I think in most cases it would be more effective to just sit with c2 instead of melee. However, for mobs like the General in Kith where if you sit, you die, this would be a great item. Remember you can proc if you miss too...
RE: Actually...

Actually I will call all of you crazy. Why the heck would a cleric high enough level to do the quest want to melee. Unless hes one of those idiots who melee instead of watching health bars and get kicked out of 50+ groups pretty fast, he knows the value of this item.
I know shamans melee and sometimes druids. They can do a pretty nice damage output as long as their spells arent needed. But a cleric? Sorry no.
Yes, the damage delay ratio is nice, and in case I would get jumped by some foolish green mob in WC, I would use it to smack him down. BUT
a) The wis it provides is not uber, but nice for whoever doesnt have his epic, and allows some item swap to exchange wis items for AC / saves / mana somewhere else.
b)40 mana is a nice bonus which makes this item even more interesting. Still not uber, but very good. Yes, not every cleric is uber equipped with 20+ k items in every slot.
c) The saves just plain ROCK. In many zones you might need sv magic / fire / cold more than disease and poison, but for Trak / Wuoshi etc it will do wonders.

Why would a cleric want to melee? Three words: Hammer of Divinity. I'm sure you've seen those big crystal-headed hammers that clerics carry around a lot, those are the nice end result of a cleric practicing his or her conjuration by summoning loads of burnt bread. In case you haven't had a chance to check one of these babies out close up...

Hammer of Divinity
Damage 14 Delay 18
5 Wis 25 Dex 35 HP and Mana
10 SVMagic
+10 Bane Damage: Undead
Effect: Hand of the Gods (combat) 150 point DD

Add to that another 75 Dex from Yaulp V and a decent 1HB and offense skill and you've got a cleric that can add a fair amount of damage to the cause.

Now I agree that clerics who melee and fail to watch health bars should get booted out on their ear faster than you can say Innoruuk, but don't completely knock a meleeing cleric, especially if you're fighting undead. I've personally seen that hammer hit an Elysian for 98 damage because of the undead bane AND proc for 150 on top of that.

#Anonymous, Posted: May 26 2001 at 4:54 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Actually, I will call you crazy. Because you are a 57 dr00d posting about the importance of a cleric item. I have had boon of the garou on while swinging my blackjack (just messing around) and was proccing constantly with that life-tap spell that Boon has built into it. Now, I'm not sure if this weapon would proc as often, but if it procs as often as the built-in life tap did for me the other day.... meditating would not touch the rate a 75 point mana siphon, crack2 or not. Any tanks know if different weapons proc at different rates? Like will a Yak proc just as often as this will in the same hands? (and I know that nobody can conceivably wield a Yak and this weapon, the Yak is just an example) I have a couple questions, maybe a necro or enchanter could help me with these. When you proc a mana siphon like this, does it steal their hps and turn it into mana for you? Or does it take mana and turn it into your mana? Would that mean that the MoB would have to be a caster in order to proc this on them? This would be an awesome weapon against caster-type MoBs since you could rob them of their mana, rendering them vulnerable, while filling up your mana bar. Any info on this would be much appreciated. Thank you boys and girls, but I must be on my way. Gotta make 60 and catch these gnomes will stop teasing me.
RE: Actually...
# May 26 2001 at 8:34 AM Rating: Default
Actually...the life-tap on the spell and the proc of the weapon are 2 diferent things. I have the 49 Pally spell Divine Might. When I cast it onmyself...my shield procs more then my Wurmslayer does. My dex is 134. I think procs are random by item...one can proc without the other procing. A ranger duel wielding yaks would be a monster is they both proc'd at the same time everytime. So yes...procs are different per weapon.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 27 2001 at 12:49 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) HAHAHAHAHAHA! Wurmslayers don't proc, foo.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 28 2001 at 5:22 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you're the foo, the spell procs 65 DD on all melee attacks, this means bashes, slashes, and (if they pallies could) kicks would get it too. He meant he was generating more procs by bashing than with wurmy.
How many of you are clerics?
# May 25 2001 at 11:13 AM Rating: Good
Just wondering.

I've been to sky quite a bit and the rare parts on cleric quests are RARE. I'm wearing the quest pauldrons and shield so I know just how long it takes. As for this item, at the higher levels it'd be a toy to play with in a group that doesn't need alot of healing. Is it worth the amount of time+effort? No. Perhaps when I finish this quest (I have all but the rare part), I'll change my tune, but in the mean time this one sucks.
very nice
# May 24 2001 at 8:38 AM Rating: Default
They should add more items with this type of proc for clerics, preferably a few that can be gotten at lower levels and restore a bit less mana... clerics would be a lot more fun to play if they got to do something besides med between buffs/heals.
increases or gains?
# May 24 2001 at 4:44 AM Rating: Default
im just curious does the effect increase your mana by 75(like gift of magic increases mana by 150) or is it like a life tap the drains 75 mana?
RE: increases or gains?
# May 24 2001 at 5:11 AM Rating: Decent
Well, the idea they're trying to get across would be like using the DeepWater Helm (which casts Valor) as a healing item for Paladins. Valor is an HP/AC buff...and it just so happens to fill the 100 or so HP that it buffs, so casting it over and over would be an effective mana-free heal. In this case, the effect would be the same, except it's mana. =)

Ok, got this a bit wrong. First DW helm has daring right click effect, Donal's arms is the one with Valor. This weapon's proc is random in battle not right clicked either. A cleric who could just right clikc their weapon countless times after a fight would be a hell of a lot more powerful than verant would ever allow.

You obviously havent grouped with a cleric with a Dawnfire in HS :p. This enchanter has and oh boy do they want shissar and boon of garou. Even if they have their epic they haul out Dawnfire so they can melee lol. The sad part is at times that sucker procs 5+ times a fight hehe.

You have got the right idea I am sure, but it is worded in a way that might confuse some people. It doesn't increase mana by 75, but rather replenishes mana by 75 points. Your mana bar fills up, but doesn't in fact extend longer due to the proc. Hope that clears up any confusion.
