This has probably already been posted, but I can't find it. Does this look like every other caster shield (Shimmering Orb, Crystal Webshield, etc) or did they change the look at all? I know I'll most likely never get one (I play a necro), but I'm still curious.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 10 2001 at 8:12 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Man, this is definetely best for mages. Why? Because I said so. Shutup everyone, it's great for all four pure caster classes.
Best for Encs
# May 27 2001 at 5:12 PM Rating: Default
AC is a must for the Enchanter class, The hps help alot too along with the mana. The resists are great as well, especially for ToV and other high end trips. But ultimately it comes down to the AC and how it would benifit the enchanter the most.
RE: Best for Encs
# Nov 12 2001 at 5:43 AM Rating: Decent
Uh, by the time you could actually get this shield (I got it at 59), the resists on it will be 50x more important than the AC. Sure, you could get a 46 into ToV, but it would not live long due to the AE's in there, and no guild in its right mind would coth in a twink to give it this item.

At this point you're either going to be using your instruments (drum for resists) for major fights or swinging the Singing Short Sword... Why would you ever consider taking up a shield as a dual wield class?
You guys suck

How come whenever I read posts about items it's always people talking about how much they know ****? STFU. Only stuff to post is where item is from, how to get it, HELPFUL STUFF. Not, oh yeah it would be best for class XXX even though i know know WTF I'm talking about and I've never been to... wtf does ToV stand for? If yer asking that question STFU. Esp. if you've never been yet. Go rant about some ringmail armor and chat about how venders sell steel plate at such rediculous prices!
How to get it

Get 40 some guys together, preferablly in the 57-60 level range. Go into the north wing. Kill stuff. Right click corpse of mob. click shield with icy shield icon. Grats you barrier of sound.

I run around in full BD gear, those of you that say its only for raids just don't have a clue, i'd love to have this shield

It is however true that HPs *are* more useful to necros than other caster classes in that HPs = manna regeneration. I think that is what Mr. "necs RULE" comments were about.
RE: All caster item
# Jul 23 2001 at 1:14 PM Rating: Decent
Not to realy get into an argument but, in most situations on a raid or such, you're bound to have a druid or shaman along, and you will have regen on you anyway. It doesn't follow that you should choose to give this to a necro over say - an enchanter, because of HP when the entire raid can benefit from the enchanter having more hp and AC. Enchanters basically are the tanks of casters and priest class, not by choice mind you. If you had the choice of giving this to a necro or mage or enchanter which would you choose? Giving it to the enchanter only makes sense. Giving any better resist/AC/HP gear to an enchanter only makes sense. Enchanters benefit EVERYONE. While I'm sure necros twitch clerics, who heal tanks, who kill mobs, enchanters save raids, save parties, control crowds, charm everything. Many times have I said to clerics if you have to decide between me and the tank, always go with me, because I can save the group, including the tank. People have to remember, enchanters can stop fights, stop the pain, stop the violence :)

Unless the mob has very high Magic Resist, in which case the chanter can really only keep the group buffed (and maybe cast Feedback on the tank).

"It is however true that HPs *are* more useful to necros than other caster classes in that HPs = manna regeneration."

*snicker*

Even if this logic were valid, let me verify with you. Just how many INT casters can perform hp ==> mana conversion? The answer is not Necros only, it is ALL 4. Ever heard of a Manna Robe? How about a Mana Stone? What? Not every INT caster class has a Manna Robe or Mana Stone? Well not every Necro prefers liche spells vs clarity.

What about this logic: Being that the Enchanter is the least expendable member of the group, hps and other defensive armors are more important to him than any other INT class.

What about this logic: Because a Wizard has the highest DD spells that produce a tremendous aggro, hps are more important to the Wizard.

How about this one: Because the Magician has no damage avoidance spells to prevent the mob from hitting them (Root, Mez/Screaming Terror, Snare, fear), hps are more important to Magicians.

How about this one: Because Necros can heal themselves through lifetaps, hps are *less* important to Necromancers than other INT caster classes.

to the one who posted

"Well not every Necro prefers liche spells vs clarity"

if they do then that is one necro i wouldnt want to group with heh if he doesnt know that hands down lich is better then c2 or boon of clear mind or any other ench mana regen* then he/she should take some time to reevaluate their char choice. Also im not trying to say that necs deserve this item over anyone else first but hp are very important to us as it does let us lich longer and get mana back faster which we all know in raid situations ends up going to the enchanter or cleric anyways. Further more what you said about screaming terror yea it does help a lot but if you've ever casted st on a mob and had it resisted then u would know that the agro from that is HUGE as well that is my 2cp

*also if ya hadnt heard yet since the latest patch lich and c2 are now stackable but u must be in lich form first.
RE: All caster item
# Aug 14 2001 at 9:03 PM Rating: Default
Agree. If a necro doesn't know that Lich regens almost twice as much mana as Clarity II, he isn't ... safe to group with. Lich, our level 49 spell, regens 20mana per tick while C2 is "only" 11 mana per tick. And ever better, lvl 60 spell Demi Lich is 31mana per tick. 3 times as fast as C2. THAT is why necros need hp.

If you haven't played a necro post 50 then don't pretend like you know everything... cause when you lose 31 hp per tick (Lich) every bit of hp extra is godsend in those situations you can't get off that lifetap for some reason...

Just my two cp. Btw, I would have donated this item to a chanter too. :)
#Anonymous, Posted: May 01 2001 at 11:48 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) this is cool for any caster. how comes that a nec need the hp/mana fuging more then another caster? chanters need 40 ac as well, stop arguing about for who it would be best, it is good for the same value for anyone who can wear it

For all the noobs out there ToV is quite possibly the toughest zone out there, its right up there with sleepers tomb, PoG and PoM. Veeshan's Peak looks like a trip to jurassic park if you ever get to ToV. Let me put it this way, 1/2 the mobs in the zone could OWN phara dar solo, 'nuff said.

RE: Wizards

Child, when is the last time you took down Tunare? When is the last time anyone took down Tunare? :p It depends what factors you base a zone challenge on. The typical mobs are easy, but the boss mob still eludes any who have tried.

This item won't be appearing on most servers for a LONG LONG time. After seeing where it dropped myself, and helping get one, let me assure you that it makes killing even Tormax (without charms) look like a cakewalk.

Yeah, it comes from the north wing, 'Forbidden Area' of ToV. No, it doesn't come from remotely near the start of it.

I'd say 45 or so people, mostly 57+, that REALLY know their stuff is a good ballpark for what you need.
With respects to high level casters

I think that this item is a godsend to /any/ high level caster. Post 50, the most important stats are resists, plain and simple. Sure, AC is very important for a chanter, they are going to get hit if they are doing their job. And we all need int/mana (however, int/mana is very easy to get.) But I feel nearly naked walking into a fight with a dragon of Talendor's power without my buffed fire and magic resists over 200 each. There is no way to avoid being hit by dragonbreath or the fear that many of them use, your /only/ protection is your resists.

And for a secondary slot resist item, this has better in /all/ resists than half the resist gear for any has in any. I cannot think of any of the 4 classes that can equip this that would not have it equipped nearly all the time. It's not a question of 'will not need it because they have uber equip'. This /IS/ the uber equip.

I tend to take about 99.9999999999% of my damage from melee and about 0.000000001% of my damage from spells.

on raids for AE mobs I have diffrent equipment than in groups, but the majority of the time I try and keep my self alive for just 1 more heal, and the AC helps me recover ^^.

* at 60, this changes (except when doing item pharms in lower seb ect), because most mobs will be hitting max, BUT I still want huge ac for a better chance of being missed (and thus recovering)
Melee damage vs. resists

Well, most damage I take as a 60th enchanter is from melee, but having high resists certainly helps in that area of ToV. You're constantly being hit by spell effects, like the annoying Acid Blasts, nasty AEs from Ancient Guardians, not to mention the dragons themselves. I disagree with all npcs hitting you for max, though. When I get around 800 AC, many of the highest level mobs in the game don't hit me for max all that often.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 01 2001 at 9:27 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Okay, Resists resists resists..Have you ever noticed that the most important class to have a damn resist is a monk? and have you noticed how rare good monk resist gear is? Sure, Froggie Crown, but no MR..HEhe...I would be VERY happy if they made this a chest slot, gave it to monks, and made it a fairly easy item to obtain, I would throw my White Lotus Chest Wraps to the side for this thing in a second if they did that. Or heck, give monk quest/Planar Velious armor some heavy resists to all..TIME THEY SHOWED MONKS THAT WE ARE FREAKING NEEDED AGAIN!!!!

Exactly!

Cryselle, you hit it right on the nose.
In the high end game, resists is key.
Ac means jack to an enchanter at this point.
So what, my AC is 725 instead of 620, yay. The mobs your fighting at this point have 1000+ attack and ignore your measily AC. They'll be hitting for max anyways. It's ALL about the resists.

I admit to being biased, because I have this shield (only two on live servers, I'm told). I love the AC, however. While the AC is only slightly higher than an orb of the infinite void, every bit helps. It's the difference between a named drake hitting you for a few measly 400 point hits, and landing 4 700 point claw hits on you, with a few 213 kicks. Heck, I even notice the difference between having just Aego and having bulwark on.
40 ac
# Apr 22 2001 at 2:49 PM Rating: Default
as an enchanter this is a great item. i hate it when everybody tries to kill me, and with the ac and resist bonuses this is great. and the mana makes up for the loss of stats on a secondary item
RE: 40 ac
# May 06 2001 at 2:14 AM Rating: Decent
loss of stats? ummmmmmm I would put this item above orb of infinte void even tho I'd be taking a HP loss, because those resists are huge even in passive situations. couple this with an epic and thats +25 to all in just your hands (thats 50sv all on most race/classes) and you can make your resists hugemongous from there.
Necros too
# Apr 20 2001 at 6:55 PM Rating: Default
My Mage can almost chain cast Shock of Swords without a MOB agroing on him. My Necro casts one Ignite Bones and the MOB's all over him. I would say in order of precedence Ench and then Necro. Plus, if the Necro isn't getting hit he can get the MOB Darked/Feared/Rooted/ST'ed/Whatever it takes.

And if I ever saw a Monk with a Shield like this he would be LFG all night long. Monks do lots of damage because they hit often and fast, take away half their damage and I'll take Goner or Xabarer any day. My War carries around a Nautilus Shield for that .01% of the time that he just needs to stand there and take a beating. Monks don't have the HP's to take much of a beating, though with high AGI they won't take it as fast. But giving this item to a melee class over any caster is not something people at this level would do IMO.

And yes the resists are nice, but I know for Naggie you only need to be at around L48 and around 60 Fire/Magic unbuffed to resist almost everything if not all, easy to do with an RLP/RBF/etc. 125 resists unbuffed? It would seem to be awfully hard to get there (though my highest chars only 50 so I might be wrong). INT's nothing at this level, at 48 me and my Mage are wearing Crystalline Webshields, Ishva Robes, a Moonstone ring, etc. INT's easy and relatively cheap. +Mana and resists are not.
Let the Chanters have IMHO
# Apr 19 2001 at 2:45 PM Rating: Default
i personally play a necro and i will say i rather see this go to Chanter 1st and Wizzy 2nd... us necro's and Mages got pet's.. while useless for the most part when u r getting owned but still they help. while chanter does have a pet they never use post 50 do to needing to have a charm ready just incase. all those that dissagree with me.. GL when ur chanters down.. 50+ + no chanter in group(or dead chanter)= either LOADING< PLEASE WAIT... or TRAIN TO ZONE !!!!.. ;)

Actually, it's more like, "I'll park these adds over here," followed by a few extra casts of Chloroblast, followed by the deaths of all the mobs, followed by the cleric asking the chanter if he's ready for his rez.

Why would you want to waste the group's time by evac'ing when it's so much simpler to just kill everything and then pick up where you left off after rezzing the hapless chanter? ;)

To make no mention of the fact that a good group won't let their chanter die in the first place...

Ok, so I'm not even close to a lvl where this is obtainable, but based on the name(Barrier of Sound) I had thought it was to be a bard item, but oh well. I just wish they could have chosen something that didn't sound bardish. Just my thoughts on the matter.

# Apr 18 2001 at 4:17 PM Rating: Default
Before you start lusting over this shield, consider that the orb is "infinite"ly easier to get. The barrier is clearly better due to resists, but the hps on orb make up for the lower AC.
