This item is a must-do for enchanters from a role-play perspective, utility of this item has been strongly debated since classic era EQ. This quote from 2001 is a good overview of why it was a decent cheap option (emphasis on cheap vs. what you could do with some plat or krono on a current progression server). Besides, it gives a good glimpse into old-school chanter gear shopping:

Well, the truly lovely thing about the rod is.. Well, it doesn't take the ring slots. You can have electrum star ruby for insanely cheap, and the steins for insanely cheap, and then when you take up charm kiting, you have the rod. You really don't need int at all when charm kiting, except for perhaps spectres, where every little bit counts, and charisma isn't as much of an issue when you're breaking charm intentionally every 20 seconds or so anyway.

However everywhere else where an enchanter can go nuts on the charm kiting Overthere, Eastern Wastes, etc, the rod, in conjunction with the rings is insanely useful for keeping a pet for the full duration of the charm. Likewise when you venture into places like Kael where mez is useless, and you're just charming to do crowd control you will want as much charm gear as you can afford. The rod being very easy to come by, and a huge plus to charisma, makes it quite affordable for it's performance.

Best charm gear setup for insanely cheap:

Rod of Insidious Glamor 12
Crude Stein 15
Electrum star ruby ring 7
Electrum star ruby ring 7
Golden cat's eye bracer 7
Golden cat's eye bracer 7

That's 55 charisma for around a K, with just cost of gems if you do the quests and are a jeweler, with self buff and an item like the incandescent mask that most 'chanters wear all the time by default anyway you're well into the 200 charisma range.

Should the triggered level of this item be more like level 10? Yes... or it should have benevolence (the higher effect) instead.

Note: some found this useful for PVP lagging people back in the day, though savvy PVP players just turned off particle effects. This was really only a factor when some were on bad dial-up.

We need a modern item window pic of this item.

We could use a pic of someone wielding it.

Just a funny nostalgic story...this was actually quite useful in PvP. Now you're probably looking at this and saying WTF!? Well, back in '99 internet connections were not so good. This item has a zero cast you could spam click it and the particle effects would often slow the other guy down sooooo bad you could kill him with ease. We called it the "lag stick".
#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 28 2003 at 6:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This thing is the ***** for pvp, get in their face and start spamming, a sure way to lag even the fastest video cards...really not much good unless you are hunting with a friend or 2 though

No, only enchanters can inventory click this item. Some items can be inventoried clicked by the wrong classes, like the AoN. This is NOT one of those items.

I see people keep saying it is not that good. IT IS A QUEST ITEM. i like doing quests because soloing can be boring sometimes and you want a change. ya you probable will have a better item by the time you hit 25 because the bazaar makes it very easy to buy and sell. Look at it as just doing a quest. thats it.
It's uses
# Jul 30 2002 at 7:39 PM Rating: Default
It's a weapon with some nice CHR to it - for chanters like myself that enjoy soloing alot, this lets me have a weapon in hand with some CHR instead of no weapon and alot of CHR.

So why a weapon?

Your chanter pet won't break a mez and no pet will break charm now - sure, you can zap the mob, but why waste the spell if you don't need to - this lets me give the mob a smack, get the pet in action and save me a spell slot, all while still having CHR.

As for the idiots that say this is great for spell spamming - get a life - it's ***** like you that are making the bazaar even worse by piling up bodies and casting sentinel. Everyone who can please down-rate those idiot's posts and get rid of them.
