I love playing my Ranger and think that with the right approach and gear a Ranger can be just as valuable as any other class in the game. That said, I am a lvl 40 Ranger on Torn and have been getting discouraged as of late from all the negative things I have been hearing/reading about "worthless" rangers 50+ (mostly from Rangers too). It's common to see players from every class want improvements for their characters, but the discussion about Rangers and their desparate needs were just down right discouraging. I have spent a lot of time playing my character and coming to expect that I had nothing to offer my guild or friends in my "golden years" was killing me. BUT, I see great hope here. If I can stand way off and do unlimited, very nice damage, no aggro meaning no mana waste for clerics/healers, and still have my melee and caster abilities in reserve, then there is GREAT hope. Be warned mob, Rotane is coming!
>no aggro meaning no mana waste for clerics/healers
It is certainly not aggro-free. Every mob 50+ can and will summon you when you top it's aggro list. Hit your /disc and pop off 8-10k of damage on something in 2min and you are one dead ranger.
Terror says, "You will not evade me Woodlund!" YOU have been summoned!
Shimmering Pearl drops on Island #9 off 'Eye of Veshan' Not sure on rarity as I am going to island 9 for the first time today. Good luck on completing the quest!
i would like to see the damage i could do with this bow i have 230 skill in archery and with the 30/40 bow i am using at the moment i have done a high of 1000 points of damage if ya count in the double damage that i have done. Ranger after lvl 55 with high archery are vary nast and can do a lot of damage with out getting agro.
wow, i am a 52 Ranger on Brell Serilis, all I can say is that my mouth hung open after I read the dmg examples....I finally had to close it after about 10min....DROOOOLLLL........
Alright, I have finally played with the bow enough to post the effects of the proc. Whirlwind is not the same as the named Druid spell (whirl wind)... the proc on this bow works indoors and is unresistible, however, the duration of the stun varies greatly depending on the target. The proc yeilds a 100dd(always this number), levitate(for the duration of the stun), short stun(0~5 sec). If the mob is rooted it will take a DD check to see if it breaks, if it makes this root will hold. The stun does take place before the dmg of the arrow, for rangers level 51 up usually means double damage. As with other procing weapons you do not have to make contact to proc, it is possible to have the effect go off on a miss.
I have gotten proc's to go off on mobs such as the upgraded innorruk, but the stuns are just a 0 stun inturruption, along with a flicker of levitate.
To be Honest my main is a cleric and my ranger is a twink project. This bow is awesome. I am a bow kiting fool. Delay doesn/t mean much with sow going, and if the targeted is snared you are golden. Proc? Who cares about procs. 45 damage is almost a proc in itself and the mob has little chance of hitting you since you can shoot backwards and running. The proc is a bonus and with these stats i could care less it proced strike.
I let Darby pop a few shots at me with his 55 /disc. A few things to note: his archery isn't maxed, his str/dex isn't maxed, he isn't lvl 60.
Still he did some awesome damage... check out how often I had to be healed :)

PS: If it matters, I am 3 levels lower than Darby, with 1000AC

whole $#!+!!!! 532 dam with a bow is alot! it would kill many monsters in the 20's in one hit!!! i cant even do that kind of damage in a quad hit!!! is it 532 dam with the proc???
Heh thats ok, but i think the highest know(on the rangers glade anyhow)is like 840ish dmg. While 532 is veryv ery cool, it isn't the best. Now to think of what the ranger could be doing inbetween those shots....Calefaction(400ish DD) Call of flames(205dd). Now that would ammount to some very mean dmg.
Acutally highest critical using trueshot on the glade is said to be 1100ish on a velk the sorcery. The bow was a efetti bow. Since delay is one of the factors in damage on trueshot. IE higher delay larger hits.
OK, a situation I find myself in quite often: I'm soloing and everything is going bad . . I'm missing, mob is hitting, spells fizzle, then I'm half gone, mob is barely hurt. Most would zone, but I'm a stuborn ranger. I root, then snare, then dot, then back off and sit/med/heal. When root breaks, I stand bow kite for a bit, root, dot sit. Every other root I recast snare. Ok, I usually win, though it takes awhile and cost me 20pp or more in arrows. But . . this is not possible if the mob is a caster, as he will stand there rooted nuking me. Now with Windstriker, I see mob begin casting, I stand and shoot . . *smack* mob is interupted. I sit back down till he begins casting again. Only question is, does the effect break root (usually DDs do, though not always). Also with the huge dmg this delivers with /disc trueshot, you can literally save a life (mob is chasing down Enc in yur grp . . no one can taunt off quick enough. Rather than chase mob and Enc around (usually futile), stop, click off attack, hit range attack. If it procs, you saved your Enc. Even if it doesn't proc, the huge dmg very well may be a successful taunt also saving your Enc. Anyway, I'm a pyscho ranger, and it would be fun to try 8-)
The only thing this bow is good for is pulling. The delay on it is pretty nasty. However, the damage is very tasty. Proc, ok, but the delay will really put a hamper on this bow. The Range is 200. That means you have one, maybe two shots until the critter jumps you. That is, Unless you run backwards with SoW on. You might get 3 shots then.
Worried about delay? go get yourself a fleeting quiver! I know not every ranger can afford to get him/herself a fleeting quiver, but any ranger prancin around 9th island in Sky can!
Doh, one other note: the 55 /disc is supposedly based on delay of the bow.. *not* dmg. If thats the case, this is uber. If its not the case, its *still* uber :)
One, maybe two shots? Funny... I often get in 3 or 4 shots with a bow of 75 range. Arrows add in, too, yanno... A smart ranger knows to snare as soon as the beastie is in range... And...well...backing off with SOW? DUH!
Higher delay ain't that much of a biggie if it hits harder, you know?
I'm 99% positive that this bow is probably going to outdamage all other bows (save *maybe* primal) when used with the Trueshot Disc. Trueshot favors high dmg high delay bows over low dmg low delay ones.
Not sure if a whirlwind spell exists, did not find it looking at the enchanter spells. The proc is a 100dd, and a levitate/stun/spin that seems to last up to 10 seconds (normally less). I am still learning about it myself.
Far as other details...well I still have yet to get a max crit with Trueshot *shrug* so far my best hit is only 456 with double damage and /disc bonus. With my previous bow (33/60) my max was a critical for 504, which has been hit on several occasions. I will edit it later after I get lucky with some big blows... but those are far and few between. Right now if I was guessing I would say the average hit is for 90, and 180 if standing still (without root).
Whirlwind is a druid spell from around 19th lvl. Been a long time since I used it, but I did against the Evil Eyes in the gorge. It does have a stun as well.
This bow actually makes archery worth-while past level 10. <cheer>
Proc on a bow? I don't care if its 10 damage, it's about time we started getting some.
I'd like to see a toned down mid-level version of this. Rangers need another quest bow that is superior to the TrueShot, forget Raincaller. And throw some effect on it like Ignite or even Flame Lick :)
*Daydreaming*
Class-specific Bow quests.
Rangers (stats should kick *** on all the others) proc : Grasping Roots (or maybe the next root spell) (this would do 10 damage extra and take a little of the kiting out of bow kiting :)
Paladins - No clue.. Cancel Magic?
Shadowknights - procs 'Scent of Dusk' (Minor resist debuff to help with thier lines of spells)
Rogues - procs 'Poison Bolt' (about 35 damage)
Warriors - procs 'Drowsy' (10-20% slow depending on level of caster)
One other idea. I would like to see a weapon (or bow) with a proc that can be one of several random spells. Perhaps a flaming bow that procs 1 of several druid fire nukes randomly, but with every shot, level 1, 5, or 9 dd spells (5, 11, and 37 damage I think).
i was wondering why you said to forget raincaller, with 3 dmg 150 rng arrows i can shoot 350rng. that means i can shoot 4 times before a unsnared noncasting mob can even come close to me. the quest is not that hard, the only hard part comming from the mermaid in kk which can be done by 1-4 people. the 6 str/dex make it valuable even when its not being used to shoot things. granted there needs to be a few more bows made availble the ones out now are by no means worthless.
You have some damn good ideas there, Ivalice. As a Paladin, I wouldn't mind the 'Drowsy' proc. I can't really think of a Paladin spell that would be a good proc on a bow, except maybe Stun, but that's not even a good one. Actually, how about 'Yaulp'. I'm only 27th (tomorrow maybe), but I know Paladins that are in their 40's that still use Yaulp (well Yaulp II, but same diff), and considering they have Yaulp III now (since Velious) as a lvl 56 spell, I'm sure there are Paladins using it. So a bow that procs 'Yaulp' would be most kewl. Any Paladins agree, or have better idea?

Posted:Apr 04 2001 at 6:02 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) What does it matter if the proc sucks? It's still a proc on a bow, how many other bows have procs? I love when n00bs talk about procs on weapons not being any good, BOO HOO! Pretend the proc isnt there then, a proc doesnt suck unless it does harm to the user or their party members plain and simple.
Actually, the stun is upwards of 8-10 seconds, and the target floats and spins in the air. This is the same effect that the Drakes on Isle 7 in PoA have (very nasty stun :/ )
