3 Dex/Agil give 1 AC point, so it seems that this would actually lower AC by about 4 points.

Anyone Ever think maybe they just think up some strange items to put in the game because they want the mobs to drop something different?

I see a lot of debate going on here about the validity of this item. In my most humble opinion, I beleive that to debate about this item from a melee's point of view is unfair. Agility and Dexterity are important stats to melees (of course, most of you are wrong in terms of the uses of said stats. Dexterity affects procs and offensive skill ups, nothing else (from here on, Dexterity will never again be mentioned, as this is basically a stupid's the Charisma of Dungeons and Dragons). Agility affects defensive skill ups and defensive "procs" i.e. effect of Dodge, Parry, Riposte, etc.) Armor Class lowers the maximum damage that a mob can do to you. So, the question for a melee is simple, "Do I want to lower my average damage in-take via more defensive 'procs', or a lower max damage cap?" If you choose higher AGI, you throw yourself at the mercy of the Random Number Generator, while if you choose higher AC, you regain more stability.

I beleive that from a Caster's point of view, the choice is a simple one. Wear this ring. By level 50, any caster should have maxed out his piddly defensive skills, meanning that AGI is worthless in that arena. Now, considering casters tend to get hit a lot less than a melee, it's more beneficial to raise AC over AGI, since one wants to be assured that they will be taking less damage per hit, and not be praying that they dodge the next blow that comes their way. Simply put, a caster gets hit less, so randomness will not benefit him as much.

From an Enchanter's point of view, we need AC up as high as it can possibly go. The ability to withstand more damage is vital to an Enchanter's crucial role as crowd control. We simply cannot afford to rely on the randomness factor to survive, we need to be able to take the hits, pure and simple. So, in the end, the proof is in the pudding. If people think this earring sucks, great, that just means you'll be able to get it at a cheaper price.

Don't be fooled by people who try to seed disinformation on stats just to get you to buy their stuff. And, just so you aren't taken for an idiot, here is what each stat affects exactly:

Strength- Affects MAXIMUM damage, higher Str, higher possible Max (your actual damage is still dictated by the random number generator, and a higher Str does not mean that you will hit for more consistently, it simply means that you CAN hit for very high amounts). It also affects how much you can carry without having your movement penalized. (Contrary to popular opinion, Strength does not affect Smithing.)

Dexterity- Affects offensive skill ups (1HS, 2HS, etc. etc.). Affects the rate of proccing proportionately (more Dex, more procs). Affects the rate of critical hits (not the amount of damage done) proportionately. (This stat is utterly useless for non-melee characters. It's barely useful for melee characters as is. IMO, neglect Dexterity, unless you just finished buying a Tranquil want those 60K put to good use.) (Contrary to popular beleif, Dexterity does not affect any tradeskill usage.)

Agility- Affects defensive skill ups (Dodge, Parry, Riposte, etc.) Affects the rate of defensive procs proportionately (the higher your Agi, the more chance of you dodging, riposting, etc.) Affects AC (higher AGI will add to your AC, yes). (A higher AGI will not grant you faster movement. Although a lower AGI will hinder your movement. There is a cap somewhere, and it's a very low one.)

Stamina- Affects Stamina bar, duh. Adds to HP minutely. (Hey, if you can't get straight HP items, get some Stam. =D) (Worthless stat for casters, worthwhile stat for all melee.)

Charisma- Affects success rate of Bard songs. Is the Tertiary check for Mez and Charm spells (What this means is that there are 3 checks that mob does against Mez and Charm spells. The first check is level vs. level...if you're higher level, you have a high chance of winning this, if you're lower level, you have lower chance of winning. The second check is the spell vs. the mob's MR...different spells have a different MR-breaking rating, usually dependant on the spell's level. The last check is versus Charisma. The higher your Charisma, the more chance of you succeeding this check. Basically, if you fail any of these checks, the spell is resisted. If you pass them all, the spell goes through. Although the Charisma check is usually very easily succeeded, if you plan on using Mez and Charm spells, you don't want to run the risk of having a low Cha and ******** yourself. By the way, every spell in the game undergoes the first 2 checks, MR and Level, but that's obvious.)

Intelligence- Caster mana. Affects tradeskill skill-ups (if it's higher than Wisdom).

Wisdom- Priest mana. Affects tradeskill skill-ups (if it's higher than Int).

(Contrary to popular beleif, Int and Wisdom have no effect whatsoever on the success of making tradeskill items. Combine successes are handled solely by your skill level.)

Those are all the stats and their breakdown. Hope this helps.

This item stinks, and is now quite obsolete. Yellow fang earing drops on luclin now with 30ac and no other stats. It is a common drop where this is rare.

Most folks are waiting to 60 to max out their def these days, from a recent ministudy I did. Chanties get def more easily, the sloppier the play, the more def they get. Note all the so-called 'good' enchanters with 10 defense. Success is the yardstick by which you are measured, an enchanter thumped is as good as an enchanter given his peace in the end. I personally went to TOFS at one point with several bards who AFKed with COR on(this resulted in about 15hp regen per second from the song, from akheva) to let others get defense from the trap.

As for this ring, I suspect it would be particularly awesome if you'd get 255agi with it. There are about 5 other earrings in EQ with a comparable AC total. They mostly come out of tov, vex, and sshrazha. This is an interesting one to try, surely. Definately not a warrior earring or anything used for procers(the diff of 180 dex appears to roughly give 3-5x the crit rate). I would put this on anyone that could use the AC, though it is really the equivilant of a much lower ac earring.

Onto correcting you:
1. Max damage is ok! The spell reoccuring amnesia has been used in odd situations to make mobs sit down(ie velk gargs) so that a melee would crip for max(very strange one imo).
2. There are actually five resist checks. The (type resist), level resist, stat resist, fatty range auto-resist(ie dragons), level cap auto-resist(old day necro drains, not using GOK on certain mobs).
3. A character with a DPS calc thing noted that his dps rose significantly with a large amount of dex difference. This stat is simply too easy to buff, notice that a 50 enc and shaman can buff a decently equipped 50 war to almost max dex.

# Jul 31 2002 at 3:11 AM Rating: Decent
I have to disagree with your statement that dex is basically of no import to melees. Altough most people tend to say it just effects skill ups, procs, etc. from looking at logs of fights I have seen a noticable difference in the number of times dual wield and double attack go off when my rogue is dex buffed. Makes a very noticable difference for certain. And that is not something trivial to a melee.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 07 2002 at 9:36 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dex does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for a warrior except maybe his archery and procs. Should you wear a 5 AC (common for most warriors) over a 12 or so AC earring because you'll get more procs? NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Anyone who really relies on procs to win the fight is an idiot. Of course there are always exceptions, but if you really want aggro/damage, stick with weapons with GOOD RATIOS, NOT PROCS.

Ummm, ********* 35 AGI = about 50AC at 50

No Warrior in his right mind would wear this unless he already had AGI maxed. It would be pointless.

Nobodies actually noticed that The Hole is far from a Level 15 Dungeon, it's in fact a level 50 odd dungeon
Just gotta say one thing...
# Nov 03 2001 at 3:20 AM Rating: Default
It's from the HOLE....the HOLE!!!!
I don't expect to ever go there this year...and I'm almost high enough me this place is almost legendary...when I first started, and I heard about "The Hole" and how hard it was to get in, and I guess out, and how high you had to be (this was after Kunark, because I had the expansion, but before Velious)...before Velious...this WAS Veeshan's Temple....this was the Kael it's just a high level Lavastorm (I imagine Druids and AntiSummon casters would rule here!)...also find it funny that an enchanter in Illusion: Elemental would be amiable here! hilarious.....anyway...what I'm trying to say is....It should be an honor to have any item from this zone...I imagine a raid on this zone would be figured out a week in advance...just the way I see the zone...if I had the money, and someone was selling this, I'd jump on it faster than you can say "why would a druid want this?"...'nuff said

(btw, not seeing maps of this place until just recently, and never hearing any info about this zone, please forgive my lack of knowledge about this unknown you think you'll ever get there?)
Not great, but definitely not bad

The stat system for everquest works in thresholds. For example raising you stamina from 75 to 95 is not as big a deal as raising it from 90 to 100. For a Rogue like myself, as long as I keep my agi and dex above 100 I'm happy, and being that my agi it 137 and dex is 142 unbuffed, I would gladly wear this earing. 18 raw ac may not be that much to a tank, but to a chain class like myself, it's almost like wearing a second breastplate on my EARS. Don't get me wrong -35 agi/dex sux bad, but I definitely think that it's liveable if you have the stats to handle it.

This is a nice earring. Pending of course on the fact that you have relatively high dex/agi and have a primal weapon available to you;)
Stop arguing
# Sep 09 2001 at 5:46 PM Rating: Decent
How can you guys even argue about this?!?! this is a no brainer. agility effects how often you are hit AND how quickly you learn some defensive skills. dex:helps determine accuarcy and spell casting capability in combat/helps calculate missle combat skills/helps determine if your interrupted when casting a spell/affects the success of critical hits/affects how quickly you learn weapon skill and rogue skills/affects damage with missl weapons and finally effects how often your weapon procs.
bottome line is unless your an idiot you wouldnt pay 1.5kpp for this wen you can buy something much better for the same price
RE: Stop arguing
# Oct 09 2001 at 8:46 AM Rating: Default
Verant has stated over and over again, that dex has nothing to do with your chance of not being interrupted while casting. This depends on your channelling skill and NOTHING else.
Are you crazy?!?!?
# Sep 09 2001 at 5:37 PM Rating: Default
You have to be an idiot to buy this thing!!! Minus **35** to 2 different stats for 18 ac. this thing isnt worth more than 5pp if you ask me
the lvl a mistake?
# Jul 09 2001 at 3:18 AM Rating: Decent
why would you only need to be lvl 15 to get this????
the dungeon is rated lvl's 40-60 , the next lowest lvl required jumps to 45??? i'm confused :(
Compare 12 ac not 18
# Jun 05 2001 at 8:19 PM Rating: Good
The thing no-one has failed to mention is the fact that while evryone is comparing 18ac against the -35 agi and dex. The fact is you could put a 6AC earing in instead with other +'s; think about it so you DON'T GAIN 18AC against the losses you REALLY ONLY GAIN 12AC. So the real question is 12 ac worth thge loss because the fact is this earing takes the place of another potential AC and stat enhancing earing. So all of you who say this items AC is worth the loss you just may be right though I have my doubts, the fact is you have been making unfair comparisions. I would like to think this thought would put to rest the endless debate over this item, though I know it won't but atleast maybe it will save another person from shelling out 2k for this thing. But hey I have only 1 charecter a 16 mage i am quite new...but hey think abiout what i've said! may save you some cash?
RE: Compare 12 ac not 18
# Sep 17 2001 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
I couldnt agree more. As a 59 cleric and 58 Ranger I am always after more ac but some times the cost for the ac is too great. By puting one of these earrings on I would lose some of my ability to dodge. All hybrid classes may want to think about this... being of course that we are not the typical meat shield warriors meant to take the hits. This item would be a poor choice for rogues because of the lowered agi and dex. This would lower the chance of a successfull backstab, and lower the ability to dodge. For all casting classes, the lowered dex will increase the interuption rate of spells. For Rangers the lowered agi will make us take a lot more hits and in the end... high ac doesnt matter to a corpse. The lowered dex will lower our damage and chance of hit for the bow. For paladins and Shaddow Knights this earring may work though they will take more hits again, and though they may have the defense of a warrior, they dont have the same hitpoints. Finally, I recomend this item t a lower lvl warrior. Maybe up to lvl 45-50 but after that better options become available.
Secondly, make the comparison, You start with 18ac but lose 35 agi lowering your dex lets say 6 points. you now have a 12 ac earring which still isnt bad but you ARE getting hit more often, a LOT more often. Now lets compare it to a fairly common and cheap earring (cougar Claw 4ac, 3dex, 2str) you gain 8ac by still using the stonemelders, but is 8ac worth the loss of 38 dex (-35 from stonemelders and -3 from not using cougar claw) 35 agi, and 3str? Moreover, how much is 8 ac worth to you, surely not the price they are asking for it.
Now Im not saying this earring should not be used and Im not giving anyone a hard time. Im only giving my opinion about an item and the possible side effects to using it. The choice is up to all of you but remember, 2K can be used elsewhere to get a lot better than 1 8ac item!

by the time u get this outta the hole, u will be quite high level. high levels tend to run around with many other high levels, sinceu solo quite bad at higher levels. many friends means that one of them will buff u with dex and agi, so itll be no prob to loose those 35, cause theyll return doubled and thriced from buffs.

My god you guys discussed in like 23 posts what dex and agi adn AC factor in like, but the question remains the same, what drops it??!

please help and thanks
# May 14 2001 at 8:33 PM Rating: Decent
Hmm - interesting....

Well I do know, my Ranger has 188 AGI and 138 DEX (level 23, not-twinked) but I had to sacrifice that in AC and STR. One thing I do notice is the increase in damage done via arrows the higher my DEX goes (my + dex gear maxes by larktwitter to 17 dmg, as opposed to the 15 I would get if I didn't wear the extra DEX equipment).

As for the "running faster" bit, I'm a little stumped on that one... That could explain why I can outrun regular mobs (guards, orcs, shopkeepers, etc..) without getting hit.... Hmm!

The only unfortunate thing I've noticed is that when I'm hit, it hurts a lot.. But I don't seem to get hit often. However, I would much prefer NOT getting hit so much, thus giving me some time to cast a spell (IE: Snare or Root) so I can back off and keep pegging the mob with arrows or DD spells.

I've been able to kill white mobs in outside zones this way (although I use up a lot of arrows).

However, this would be a BAD tactic for any dungeon dweller... A high AGI ranger doesn't make for a good "Meat Shield".

Oh well.

I guess I should put on "missed you" messages so I can better check this out.

It would be nice, though, if Verant could be a little clearer on what exactly DEX and AGI does...
After all, it's very clear in D&D (but then, there's no such thing as AGI)
Is it worth it?
# May 12 2001 at 8:01 PM Rating: Decent
As was well stated by the 43 monk who tested dex/agi at level 40, for a melee the loss in number of attacks you get and the increase in attacks landed on you by mobs is not worth the ac gained. If you are a large race tank, you most likely don't have 35 agi to lose above the 75 mark, so there would be substantial ac loss with this item. And Agility does influence a caster's ability to regain concentration--test it with 75 dex versus 100+ dex, you will see. The only time i would have my tanks use this item would be if they had well over 150 agi and dex, and had maxed their defensive and offensive skills, and there was a Shaman in the group. As a high level caster with over 110 agi and dex, I might use it, but would rather add resist or mana gear.

Good hunting all,
Sorcerer of Innoruuk
RE: Is it worth it?
# May 12 2001 at 8:06 PM Rating: Decent
Correcting a typo--Dexterity influences reagaining concentration when casting, not Agility.
this affects the following abilities
# May 04 2001 at 11:18 PM Rating: Decent
it causes you to be 'missed' more.

it causes you do 'dodge/riposte/parry/block' less

it causes you to proc less, and do less damage with select non primary function skills.

it might or might not, depending on your total RAW AC from armor and total AGI cause your 'ac' value to improve or decrease. but this value has very little meaning by itself since its a combination of several things.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 02 2001 at 5:19 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) it will dont even doubt it
RE: the agi loss will nullify the ac gain f00s
# May 03 2001 at 9:40 PM Rating: Decent
No kidding stop this lame debate. 18AC will give you more AC then the teensy bit lost from Agi

FACT: Only function of agi is to give a little AC.
FACT: Only function of dex is Archery DMG, Proc rate on main hand, rogue and bard skills.

So if you aren't a rogue or bard, not a serious archer and your main hand weapon doesn't have a great proc, this is an awesome earring.
RE: the agi loss will nullify the ac gain f00s
# Jul 22 2001 at 11:23 AM Rating: Default
True, AGI only increases AC as far as we know. However, you're losing about 1 AC for every 3-4 AGI points, or a loss of around 10 AC on this item. That means the net gain is likely around 8 AC.

DEX also affects how quickly you advance melee skills. Don't wear this item if you are working your 2H skills, for example.

Lastly, I wouldn't use this item at all if it put my AGI or DEX below 75.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 18 2001 at 9:17 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Bah. -35 is NOT teensy. And I hate your hairstyle.
