I hate to break this to some ppl but the SS armor sucks plain and simple for monks. The only part of the armor worth anything is the legs and the bracer. The AC is so low as well as most of the stats its unreal.
Yes, monks have high damage per second. We live to get that weapon that does the best DPS. (esp. two handed, for a bit less aggro). and No, we are not tanks, and Yes, we do need armor with lots of other stats, not AC only. Ok, sometimes I have to tank. Not in raids, just in a group.
In a raid, I"m lucky if I get hit once or twice from a mob. (unless of course, the whole raid is about to TPW). But, a bad mob buff for AOE spell from that nasty dragon or whatever can realy ruin yer day. So we, like everyone else, has to uber up his stats as much as possible.
AC is importaint of course, but not nearly as mush as the true melee tanks.
So unless you have played a monk, please don't tell us what we need for armor.

You Guys insane talking about SS gear like its the best thing in the world, some dude said he had Cof, wtf if ya got Cof then ya can afford to buy better then this SS "Crap". Its easy, Hardened Grey Flesh Sleeves 16ac 6str 6sta 6dex 20hp?? or 30hp, only like 5k to 7k on most servers. If you are capable of going to Tov then that must mean you have some kind of income. The only piece i would get is the Bp. I made all my pp buying low selling high.
Wow! Sometimes I wonder if people post ignorantly just to get reactions.
Monks are a high damage melee class, they are NOT tanks, and stats DO matter. Tanks are warriors and SK are the closest second. Warriors have defense capabilities that allow them to take less damage, their sole purpose is to keep aggro and get hit. They get the best AC/HP gear in the game. The reason a monk can beat a warrior in duel is because we are damage dealers with mend. It just takes longer to keeel them, because our dps drops against a warrior.
Stats don't matter? If you have a proc weapon/s dex matters a WHOLE lot. Stamina means HP, Resist gear is better than AC when fighting casters and dragons, the list goes on and on, why do you think people pay so much plat for items with a few extra stats on it?
Meanwhile this arm piece is mediocre. If you don't have better, it's not bad. Try getting Hardened Grey Flesh Arms - they are very nice.
in no way should a monk be even thought of as a tank, cause they arent. if u want to prove me wrong go tank vindicator on a raid and see how successful that outing is, but yes monks are UBER and kick mucho ***** but lets not get crazy and say we can out tank a warrior, thats a little bit of a stretch.
OMG LOL whoever said monks aren't a tank class you are a fool. LOL. Ok if a Tank(Warrior) 2-3lvl's above me can die from a duel by me..does that make me a tank?? Damn right it does yes we don't have the HP to back us up like Warriors but we have our own little skills to do it. I mean we have dodge reposte we got offence defence so forth and so forth...If you don't get agro during a fight with warrior taunting constantly..delete your monk...you have no reason to play it if so LOL. Most grps i'm in i keep agro while fighting with a warrior taunting...yeah you say oh just Feign Death...lol well i do...3 times before i start to fight again..agro right away once i begin again. And we are talking SG zone...mobs with alot of HP's to give me time to FD prob 20 times before they die during a grp battle. I would take these sleeves over my Azure sleeves...azure sleeve suck compaired to these...And that comment was only directed to the person who said we aren't tanks...we are DoTs...i don't know about you but i plan on wooping the mob's *** in a hurry and no DoT (Dmg over Time) crap for me. Get it??
ANY melee can make a good tank provided the mob can be slowed and doesn't hit for over a couple hundread damage. That being said, warriors make the best tanks because they can sit there and take the damage that all other melee cannot. In raid situations, I have used my 60 monk to tank add(s) now and then. Not because he could, but to get the add(s) off the caster(s) right away and call for a warrior to come keep it occupied. As soon as a warrior was on it (which was almost right away), I would FD and then immediately jump back on the target mob.
Miroh, the warrior you were fighting doesn't quad for 700 damage or have 50,000+HP and a regen of 100HP per tick, etc. Monks were never designed to tank end-game mobs, we were designed to be high DPS (damage per second). In raid situations, DPS has been 1st place Monk, Second Rogue (sometimes first and second have been switched), 3rd Monk, 4th Monk, etc. My monk has been in the top 3 but never first (someday, hehe). Take out all special abilities (backstab, spells, etc) and monks are the rulers of DPS.
That's their design, part of "the vision" which is fine with me. Just give me back the round-house animation for flying kick like with the old iksar models! =)
Oh, and if you steal agro for any reason on end-game mobs, you won't be raiding much. To steal agro in raid situations is a big no-no and highly frowned upon.
You sir, are a fool, and you have not fought a single mob over level 50 yet. go play your monk some more and quit posting your trash on here, i apologize to any young monks out there that might have read this.
Well. I haven't done the whole post 50 melee thing much yet, but, here's my thought.. 50+ mobs will hit you. I don't care if you have 920ac or 1120ac, you're going to get hit. Okay, so, what? Maaaaaybe you narrowly avoid 4 attacks in a fight and save yourself 380hps.. I whomp around with my level 40 iksar monk and I'm typically with a level 45 ogre shaman friend. With his buffs I have 160str, 220agility, 200dex, and 120stamina and I have NO uber stuff, yet. No stat/ac/resist combos, nothing. I have stuff like wolf fur slippers, azure sleeves, black pearl platinum rings, forest loops. You know, lamer stuff. With my stats pumped by the shaman I can solo drakkel dire wolves all day long (I have 767ac cuz of overweight 2lbs and cuz of my uber lame gear, but 160str, 120sta, 220agil, 200dex).
Anyways, I can get alacrity up from friend.. run out, pull a blue drakkel wolf. Kill it, pull another, etc. Most I've done, solo except for the stat buffs & haste, up to 6 wolves before I stop to rest for any lengthy period of time. 6!! 6 Blue cons, with NO uber gear.
I'd love to have another 60ac, but I rather have higher stats, higher resists, and what seems to me to be ~500ish more hit points wearing all this white lotus stuff. I dunno.. Get me a Runed Bolster Belt, Cloak of Flames would be nice but if I am to choose.. RBB baby! Haste, 5ac, stats out the whazoo! Woot! Combo items are the way to go my friend. If a big scaley friend wants ta kill ya, guess what, haste, ac, 50 extra hps, or..well... ANYTHING!! Will be about as effective as simple wishful thinking. Personally I really think I notice a difference between 220agil with gear & buffs over 100 agility. I block/dodge til the cows come home. Also, anything blue enough for me to solo, I want to be blue enough and dexterous enough for my one trance stick to illuminate the battle field. I've had upto 7 procs off 1 stick in a single fight. 7x83=583hps. Wow. Did I mention I came just a HAIR away from solo'ing a frost giant scout in the great divide? At level 40. Anyways.. To each their own, but, I've ALWAYS said.. max out those stats! Stats, stats, haste, stats, procs, stats, haste, stats, and if you're lucky.. a proc with a stun effect! Woooot! Oh, one other thing.. do you know what its like to try to melee a casting mob when you have base resists? hahaha.. now, on the other hand, I put on my velium gear, few other resist items, and get some buffs from my shaman friend and the shardwurms in the greatdivide hardly touch me on the pull. They can't. LOL. Add to that some planes gear/dragon gear/uber zone quest gear & you basically have a magically immune rag doll. When I think of all the times I've died in a greenie dungeon simply because I couldn't feign away 8 casters and I couldn't resist them enough to keep fighting.. damn.. To me this is how it is: Your ac isn't going to stop a dragon, a sarnak, or well, anything past level 15. Sure, mr. troll warrior in full cobalt at level 5 is gonna rip it up. Those frogs are gonna die by the dozens, but, heck, at level 5 a shaman with a jade prod and like 2 or 3 decent ac items can do the same thing, I did with mine! At level 50 the skeletal warlord isn't going to stop and say "Oh, mr tank, you haved 1100ac, I may as well leave you alone because I can't touch you" Psh, no, he's gonna pound you just the same. Miss maybe 15% more, and your health bar won't drop as fast because you have more hps, this is true. But it's very marginal returns for the effort.
Now, if you have 100 resist all. And then you get some buffs so now you have like 140-190 resistance in everything. That WILL make a HUGE difference. That 581dmg ice nuke now does like 0-200dmg. Now that is a BIG, HUGE, UNmistaken, very noticable, very tangible benefit.
I'm sorry, Ainarki is right, rude as heck but right. The item needed for these sleaves are off level 60 mobs in Temple of Veeshan. I'm not sure a comment about a level 55+ item by a level 40 monk about being hit by level 50 mobs makes sense here. Once your closer to 55+ you will agree with him. AC is important, Agil and Dex are much less important. Resists are handy as well but levels resist more then resists do. Levels also help you keep from getting hit, that is if the level is to your advantage.
You ******* moron. Stats are almost completely useless (Except stamina or wis/int for casters, err and charisma for enchanters) And for you saying ac doesn't matter... WHAT THE **** ARE YOU SOME KIND OF STUPID FLAMING ******* MORON!? Ac is the whole ******* base of the melee game. Sure it doesn't matter as much at the higher levels, but saying that after level 15 ac doesn't matter is stupid. My warrior has 1243 ac unbuffed. If he tanks one of those named flurry drakes in ToV, he will get reemed up the *** with a large ******* stick. But if hes buffed up totally (around 1360 ac) He can tank them just fine. Now stfu you stupid newbie. I hate you god damn people. I just realized i used the wrong grammer on the subject line. It should be "You're a moron." I'm sorry for any confusion this may have caused by making you think that you are smart by pointing out this mistake. /bird
nice arms man... never seen a better monk arms... resist hitpoints, stats, decent ac... uber.
Seriously you'd have to be insane to use a 12ac 0.6weight arms instead of these with their insane stats. Just uber man... muy impresivo.
Like a lot of monks I was stuck in the mindset that ac > all other stats for monk and fungi tunic was god for me. Then I went to velious and saw cleric mobs hitting for 600 damage a whack. I quickly changed my tune and started goin for stats, hitpoints, haste.
Currently my ac is 1020 unbuffed anyway at lvl 53 with around 1810 hitpoints unbuffed... Man I can't wait till I get thurg arms, legs, bp, and epic.... I'd love to get the skyshrine over any other armor but i'd hate to do that to a druid. Druid armor for them helps more than monk armor does the difference between thurg, pog, and skyshrine / kael.
Yes we all know kael has more raw ac... Yes we know that raw ac is good for monk... BUT... Stats and hitpoints are better. Saves top off the cake.
Blue diamond bracer currently going 6k, bd earrings currently going like 3 or 4k, not having to swap out your hard earned quest gear; Priceless.
Well anyone that says they would take azure over these cant be too intelligent..I mean for christ sakes just look at these.. lower ac..big whoop..45hp extra make up for that and the guy that talks about agi..I hate to break it too you..but for a normal monk like me..I have 130agi without even trying to build that stat and it doesnt help worth a damn...as far as dex if you have a proc weapon (or two) as I do you'll notice that 200dex kills the damn thing before you have to worry about using your agi
Ok, Im a lvl 20 mnk, and wondering is AC, HP, or Stats more important? Im not asking which is better for a lvl 60. What is better for me at lvl 20? My agi is currently 163 and i still get hit, not nearly as often as others, but still hard wen i do! Any advice is appreciatted
Monks aren't a tank class. =p We are DoTs. We are not intended to be hit. Now.. I'll be the first to admit that I recently upgraded my equipment to go for AC, but that's because I'm using fighting batons and they seem to taunt. As soon as I find a good (affordable) 2hb, I'm going to try to focus on strength. Anyways, just my opinion. =/
Again this item is a level 55+ item. At level 40 or 20 or whatever the game is very very diffrent then it is at 55+.
Agro(hate) management is the job of everyone in post 55 encounters. In encounters with high end mobs if your getting hit and the tank is having problems getting the mob off you then it your job is to stop generating so much agro. If this means FD, concussion, jolt or evade do so. If these are not an option, stop attacking until the tank firmly has agro again.
I play a 58 monk with Epic, SoS and CoF and yes I generate a lot of hate with the mobs. Hitting up to 5 times every second will do that. Gauge your tank, is he a warlord, does he have his epic(s)? Does he use primal or a septer of destruction? Has he gone defensive? is he a 55 warrior using a wurmslayer? React accoringly.
2hb will only help us so much. Every player needs to wake up, and pay attention to what he is doing and whats going on around him or lower the efficency of their group/guild and risk TPW.
Monk with fighting baton, taunt? You're level 40? Who are you grouping with, rag dolls? A rogue will easily out taunt you, any good warrior with out taunt you. With a Master Wu's Trance Stick & a Cane of the Tranquil in off hand (for speed mostly), at level 38 I couldn't ever taunt off a level 36 barbarian warrior i was grouped with and all he had was a ssoy & a wurmslayer. No enchanter haste. And he didn't have anything more than an FBSS, if anything, though I didn't inspect him (wearing full crafted). Somehow I doubt the guy had a cloak of flames or a runed bolster belt or anything similar if he was in crafted..so..anyway..don't worry too much about taunt with a POS fighting baton.
Furthermore, on raids, you pretty much need a nice 2hb..like Imbued Fighters Staff, Tranquil Staff, Runed Fighters Staff, etc, etc.. WITH haste with either of the first two, to really hope to taunt off the Main Assist. The main assist is choosen because A) they're a warrior B) they have the gear to handle the job, usually cobalt or better, hasted, etc C) They get symboled, regular hp buffs, full shaman buffs, and max enchanter haste avaialbe and D) most warriors have higher strength than most monks, and have higher average damage per hit with comparable weapons. That being another point against a monk duel wielding Fighting Batons. At level 50 and 130strength my monk averages about 27damage a hit with Fighting Batons, not exactly a lot of agro there. (I SAID AVERAGE. If anybody tells me they have a level 50 monk with ~130 strength and hits in the 40s for an average hit, with a figthing baton 8dmg 20del, then I'll tell you who the liars are).
That's pretty much all there is, so, if you're having problems with taunt as a level 40 monk wielding 2 fighting batons, here's what you need to do: find another group.
Wouldn't have been too bad if they had 7 Agi instead of freakin' Dex. The Agi would have made up for some of the AC lost, and the 45 HP on these is nice. 45 isn't much, but if you had 45 on even half of your inventory slots...
