All you people you shoudbetalking about how you got this armor and wehat is the easiest/safest place and where to get the damm diamonds , htere are multiple ways to play all classes and multiple styles of individuals compounded on type of player: ie My Ranger is an explorer , some are more of the mercenary type and some are Questers (helping people with their foraging and tracking. This Bp rocks and if anyonecan tell me how they got it please let know.

Rangers be yourself and not try to be a warrior monk or pally/sk

I myself, 56 Ranger at this time, HAVE been Main Tank(MT)in many groups. Most places in Seb, Pit in Velks, just to name a couple. I will agree, it isn't the place I would prefer being in. But I am pleased to say that it is not as bad as some people think, having a Ranger as MT I mean. With Aego and the all mighty Shaman buffs, I have personally had just short of 4k hps (2339 hps self buffed). Which, if you think about it, is not bad for a Ranger.

Hail,
As a 55 Ranger, I've spent a lot of time tanking for my group of friends in different dungeons. Seblis, KD, Maiden's and Akheva. I have some decent equipment but MOST importantly, a 60 shaman friend who's handling the slows. Rangers can tank, especially with the new AA skills available to us, just get real tight with a good shaman slower. Should we? Not when there is a SK/War/Pally avail, it's just not mana efficient to heal me, even with 3400 hps with full buffs, as compared to a warrior running closer to 5k. Doesnt mean we cant do a good job when we have to tank, just not our strongest point.

The beauty of the ranger class is the challenge of playing all it's facets as well as you can.

Good hunting all

Get a full suit of this and see what happens. Yeah, ok, it looks like gold/brown Ry'Gorr, but who cares. Nothing feels better than being able to out-tank some warrior who thinks he/she is superior because they get the highest defense cap.

Rangers are fast like monks, and have druid spells, we dont get any crits other than arrows, or crippling blows, so we more like monk/druid/itty bit of warrior...rangers can tank in a pinch with a good cleric, and all depends on the equipment, a ranger in our guild ends up tanking alot and has like 930 AC so works halfway decent, the fun part of rangers is ya get to play an assist role in combat, do damage/protect casters/seperate and root mobs(my specialty) and so on, if ya like to be moving around in battle instead of hittin autoattack and standing there, be a ranger, and these armor quests will help your AC to put you into a semi tank category....

-rikko
51 ranger,
oh and most 50plus mobs hit HARD, if ya a ranger and tank some you might want a EXCELLENT cleric, and some of this quest armor or ya toast

dont underestimate Bow crits, pre SoL with archery buffs and the lvl 59 archery 200% bow dmg skill, my friend got crit for 598 with bow. All it takes is 200+ archery, good bow, and trueshot (lvl 55 disc). imagine the dmg u can do with SoL... dont think anyone has a lvl 59 skill yet tho.
RE: not brenwyn
# May 14 2003 at 3:39 PM Rating: Default
My best non-crit with /disc trueshot is 1146 my best crit to date is 1822 based on my non crit high i should be able to break the 2k by a good bit. BTW im lvl 62 with eq and am3 with a 1500 atk fully buffed with chanter/shammy/self buffs ac just over 1230 and about 5k hps with clericals. Let me be the first to tell you Rangers in the higher end parts of the game were NOT ment to tank and can only do so as a last resort. I can do 25k damage easy within my disciple time. my highest non disciple DPS is 330 hps/sec. with disciple its more into the 450-550 range. I can do maybe if i dont die tanking 6k in melee damage. As for the "Jolt the Crud" comment even hitting over 1k on most trueshot hits i have never got agro off of a tank if he taunts even once, so save your mana for heals.

You want to see what a ranger can REALLY do with their bows?

http://web.ndak.net/~jetk/Nicecrit.jpg

And people say we're weak...

Ok, ok, most rangers won't ever meet that. Actually, if I'm right, no other ranger HAS met that (since, it's like the highest arrow crit anybody has gotten, please correct me if I'm wrong). Bow: Avatar of War bow, arrow: one of the 10dmg SoL arrows, Endless quiver, archery mastery 3.

Anyways, it's possible

Yeah, we're comparable to wizards in damage dealt for a total of 2 minutes, and if you're guilds good, that's how long a dragon fight will take. The difference is, we have 20x the HP and AC of wizards... Just make sure to JOLT THE CRUD out of everything whenever you pull this off! (for those who don't know and should, jolt reduces aggro)
monks tank?
# Oct 26 2001 at 9:15 AM Rating: Decent
It's laughable to say that monks tank better than rangers. Granted, neither class would make your top 3 choices for tanks. But rangers would be the definite fourth. Monks have pathetic AC and HP's for a melee class. Rangers at least have some passable armor options.

And as for pulling. Who do you want pulling in a non-outdoor dungeon? A monk. Anywhere else? A ranger. It's that simple.

RE: monks tank?
# May 07 2002 at 7:42 PM Rating: Decent
If a ranger wants it, he gets it from the SK in... say... however long it takes him to cast snare a couple times. thing is, we DON'T WANT aggro and so they give us jolt (not the soda)
RE: monks tank?
# May 08 2002 at 8:34 AM Rating: Default
Okay, both the person laughing about SK pullers and the person using Snare to steal aggro have no idea what they're talking about.

Flame Lick = Best taunt around. It takes 1.5 seconds to cast and is one of the most aggro-licious spells in the game. And it costs 6 mana. One of the best Velk's groups around is a ranger using Flame Lick constantly, so that the mobs never turn on the two rogues backstabbing him. The ranger takes little damage since the shaman or enchanter is slowing and the rogues make quick work of the mob either way.

As for laughing at SK pullers: You are insane. I don't really know why, probably just a coincidence, but every time I end up at the Manor in Kael there is an SK pulling. FD pulling, many times. He's just as good as your average monk. I've even been in a HoT raid where an SK was puller instead of the two monks present; he was also the tank for a while.

Your class doesn't automatically make you something; your skill and equipment do.
RE: monks tank?
# Jul 09 2002 at 10:29 PM Rating: Default
Flash of Light = taunt...kkthx

But who cares...this is an age-old arguement... "Oh yeah?...I bet I can out-aggro you!...Oh yeah? I'd like to see it." Bah..who gives a damn. We all have our strong points and we all have our areas of expertise. I can out-taunt rangers..even rangers chain casting Flame Lick and Snare..been there. But why the heck would I need or want to? Flame on...it needed to be said. Talk about something worthwhile instead of who can out-aggro something...lol

At any rate..this BP is indeed quite sweet, gratz to those rangah's that have received it. Very nice piece 8)

And gluck to those hoping for the BP piece to drop 8) Hope you get it soon enough..heh

Actually, Rangers do have the highest agro profile of any class. There are two classes that come close, and those are Wizards overnuking, and Enchanters Chain Tashing. Both run out of mana before a Ranger, and take hits far less well. THere is, additionally, no reason for an Enchanter to chain tash, so it comes down to a wizard chain nuking. Even in that situation, I can maintain agro at a bare minimum of 2/3 of the time; it is merely a question of how much my DPS suffers because of excessive agro generation.

Tangling Weeds, just by the by, makes a far better taunt then Flame Lick. The DoT component has some bad mojo for crowd control, especially on caster mobs. Even so, why chose? I have kept both up when I feel like I really want agro, and no one comes close.
RE: monks tank?
# Oct 26 2002 at 6:50 PM Rating: Good
actually, there is no dot component to it. its just a fast casting snare
RE: monks tank?
# Jun 07 2003 at 7:42 PM Rating: Decent
he was refering to flame lick, which is indeed a small DoT. Psmongin's reply is dead on. Rangers out agro any class if they want to because of fast casting low level agro spells and dual weild.
If I pull with 2 casts of flame lick I usually have enough agro where no shaman or chanter will get agro from said MoB after they debuff and slow it. Almost always I will have enough agro where no one will even be summoned by it, cept me.

just want to say well put friend. myself love playing my lv 50 ranger. our job post 50 is mainly to assist the main tank in the group, a very enjoyable one i might add. i just hate to hear people bashing rangers cause of there low ac and hp as a melee class. it's called roleplaying people. a ranger isn't supposed to have the highest hp and ac, so do yourself a favor and stop trying to play a ranger as a warrior. trust me on this, you will not die as much as you are now. reason being, you play a ranger as a ranger and you live, and enjoy the game much more

More than a good piece of armor....
# May 30 2001 at 5:21 AM Rating: Excellent
A smart ranger rarely gets hit assuming you are not soloing. Take this scenario:

You are raiding, doesn't matter where. There are a few warriors, a few SKs, and a few pallys...total, about 30 people. All classes that have higher AC, more hps and better defensive skills than a ranger. A lvl 60 mob is pulled. Assuming you and your hunting team don't have your heads up your butts, you will not get hit often. As a ranger, you should be as far from the mob as possible but still in striking distance. If you aggro, back away and/or jolt. AC should only matter for a ranger when soloing or at a raid when all of the tanks are dead and there is one high lvl mob left at 5% health (this doesn't happen often). Occasional hits, even from a high lvl mob, usually aren't that bad.

Enough ranting, my point: Don't get hit, and mind your offensive stats and resists. To a skilled ranger, resists are more important than AC sometimes. You can avoid melee aggro easier than an AE nuke =) This is what makes the Shyshrine armor superior to its Kael counterpart (you might end up sacrificing your Kael bp for a Dwarven Ringmail Tunic one day to make up for resists!). Learn to use jolt, and know when it's time to back off of a mob. Trust me, your clerics will thank you...your exp bar as well.
Either way, 43 AC is still A LOT of AC!

Good hunting =)

*cough* my question is...why in the hell are u anywhere near close enough for that AoE nuke to hit u to begin with!? even a ranger without EQ(like my 58 ranger) should slam pack his invitory with quivers and arrows and stand back form EVERYONE..and pump arrows into whatever the hell they pull...trust me..it works...ur DPS might sufer a little bit...but thats one less corpse that needs rezzin when u see that raid wipe and ur halfway to zone! i sugest u start scrapin together dex gear..cause that is what ur gonna need..bottom of the line

It can, will, and does happen all the time. In a big raid where resists are key, the only time the smart ranger gets hit is when he can't avoid being hit, basicly, when something is casting AoE spells.

In those situations your AC could be 1500+, but if your resists are pitiful you will be dead before you can even see it coming. It sounds silly, but wearing that lousy tunic you got at level 12 or whatever will save your life 1000 times better than any high end AC breastplate with no resists.

Of course that won't by iteslf save you, but combine that with enough Blue Diamond Jewelry and Diamond Jewelry, and a few other pieces of resist gear (Froggy Crown for example) and you will survive those AoE (Area of Effect spells) and keep on whacking.

It seems odd, but do a check on this site for total resists for a Breastplate for Woodelf rangers for chest slot, the Dwarven Ringmail Tunic (DRT) comes in at number 12, out of EVERYTHING in the game for chest slot. Do that same check for total resists for a woodelf ranger, this time exclude no-drop. Now the DRT rolls in at *drumroll please* number 6 again, out of EVERYTHING in the game for chest. The only item above it in that list that is obtainable for a decently new raider is the gnomish enviorment suit, which lacks an all important resist. Magic.

I laughed at a high level ranger that saw me wearing this and said "Hold onto that for raids." I was thinking "What is that guy talking about? Is he nuts? As soon as I can get banded mail I'm ditching this dumb thing!" And of course I did ditch it. Then after I went on my first raid and got swiss-cheesed by AoE spells, I promptly went back to Crushbone (late at night when the zone was empty) and pounded my old friend the King until he coughed it up for me. It has been in my "Raid Locker" ever since with all of my other resist gear. When I know where we are going and who will be casting, I don't wear it until I need it, but I can assure you when I go on a raid, I never leave home without it.

Plus 8 to Cold, Fire, and Magic is as good as being able to wear another diamond velium ring as far as those resists go. The only resist that this BP has OVER the good old DRT is 2 more in Magic 1 in poison, and 5 in Disease. And good luck getting it before your old frined, the DRT.

Safe Travels

he's right, i think... 7 vs fire cold and magic is great if you're on a dragon raid, though i have never personally done so. You're gonna want all the resists possible when that situation arises, because you don't like being hit with a 10k nuke/dispell, it hurts too much...

Some of you need to keep in mind that all the classes have their place in a group, and have their unique skills...yes rangers are meant to do as much damage as possible in little time, same with monks (which might confuse the issue of what rangers are) but all in all Rangers are a utility class, able to do just about everything but NOT in an overpowering way in any catagory. Yes rangers get Druid spells and we don't get the best ones...but rangers have a line of RANGER only spells too. Rangers may not be a powerfull sorcerer but we can use the spells we do get to the utmost ability...take a look at the spells we do get and tell me where any of them WOULDN'T be useful? *clears his throat* oh and btw rangers can tank...it just depends on how smart the poerson is behind that ranger =) Don't get in over your head and you'll do just fine, remember we can take way more damage then a druid ever could and we can cast their spells....+ a bunch of "call of's" spells. Stay smart rangers...don't let anyone tell ya this armor isn't good, this gold leaf armor looks awesome from over here. Gotta get my hands on that..see ya all in Norrath, good huntin.

Yes Ranger's can tank. BUT they should not. Ranger's are much much more effective as a secondary damage dealer, i.e. Rogues. There are four, yes FOUR classes that can tank better then us. Palidans, Shadow Knights, Warriors, and even Monk's can tank better then us.

The moral? Able to tank? Yes. Best role in a group? No.
RE: Ranger
# Jul 16 2001 at 4:18 AM Rating: Decent
I certain circumstances having a ranger tanking is both useful and essential. If you've got no warrior or pally, or where you have a good, efficient cleric, rangers can tank very well. It's all about aggro management. I've been the main assist on Kael raids with my ranger, even though there were warriors on the raid. You just have to be on-the-ball with your use of snare and jolt to manage the aggro.
RE: Ranger
# Aug 26 2001 at 11:46 PM Rating: Default
If you want a tank for a group and you're out a warrior, go with an SK first, best taunters, and dish out FAR more damage then Pallies, with their DoT's, lifetaps, and slows they're FAR superior to pally's as an alt tank... just thought i'd remind everyone that SK's rule and pallie's... well.. if you've ever grouped with one then you know =)

In role we essentially are, because we deal more damage than warriors (i've easily outdamaged high level warriors while i'm in the 40's) as I was second on aggro most of the time with the warrior barely ahead of me due to taunt. I was 48 then and i'm going to assume he was high 50's, though he was anon. I was always the one getting rampaged in Kael. Even some monk with a scepter of destruction wasn't outdoing my damage. What can i say, we're cool, but without warriors, the party's over, take your goodie bags, and go home. No one can come close to them in tanking ability as everyone knows and only paladins come close in HP/AC. On a raid, a ranger shouldn't tank unless they're killing the lower end stuff in the area, otherwise another cleric has to click a stick at you then wait for you to zone...
RE: rangers
# May 15 2003 at 11:54 AM Rating: Decent
Getting Rampaged isn't proof you were second highest on aggro. Rampage goes on a separate list based on who damaged it in what order and isn't the main (hate) aggro. Getting rampaged usually means you were the 2nd person to attack it.

Druids will NEVER get any armor with AC this high.
Druids are NOT a melee class.

Look up the ranger spell list sometime. And before you call it fake do your homework. Call of Earth is a Ranger spell.

First off this is NOT a fake. I got mine yesterday. Call of Earth gives a small (4pts) damage shield and increases your AC by 26. This BP is the best BP for a ranger. Yes I know that you're giving up 5AC vs the Forest Stalker's BP but the stats are better, except for str and the FS BP has no magic resists. Besides, no self respecting Ranger would EVER snuggle up to Giants.

Unadorned chain mail is dropped by mobs in the halls of testing in Temple of Veeshan. The mobs are quite, quite hard.
heh cov vs tormax
# Mar 29 2001 at 3:51 AM Rating: Decent
I'd rather cuddle my tormax than cuddle a dragon. die dragons die.

Doesn't change the fact this bp rules ;)
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 20 2001 at 8:51 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) No, rangers are about 1/4 monk 3/4 warrior, thats why the get low ac. And Clerics are plate wearers that get the crap beaten out of them because of their intense heals.
RE: Hmmm not

If Rangers were part monk, part warrior, where do they get the spells from? Notice how our spells are similar to druid spells? /boggle.

Umm rangers are part warrior part druid, not monk.
