Pally

Seems Pet is the way to go, charmed a snow bunny with my druid to do it. However as you can imagine my pally is having a little more trouble. Any possible way I can do this withouta pet? Or should I simply swallow my good for nothing pally pride and get a Pet class to come help? Thanks for help in Advance.

Well, with my cleric I used the time honored method of running around in circles until something spawned, and then bolting for kael if it was a death squad.

Eventually, the dorf spawned, and for me it was while running from a death squad. Luckily he stayed up long enough for me get away from the giants and turn in.
TIPS
# May 21 2004 at 9:41 AM Rating: Decent
Took the best of all suggestions on posts and got this shawl in about half an hour.

1. Get a pet (use your's, someone else's, or charm one; I charmed a walrus and used as pet).
2. Place the pet at the top of the ramp to Kael and have it guard.
3. Click on WALK and follow the direction the pet is pointing. (First time I did this I was running instead of walking. I spawned Tannik and ran slightly past him and spawned a Death Squad, they killed Tannik). Watch your screen for the message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain". Tanik will be laying on the ground.
4. Simply hand him the premade Vial of Velium Vapors. I did not hail him just gave him the vial.
5. Receive note and turn in to Boradinn in Thurgadin; receive 4th shawl

GOOD LUCK

The key to spawning Tanik
# Mar 26 2004 at 8:38 AM Rating: Decent
We have used the following method on 4 shawls in a row and spawned Tanik every time. You need to have a pet for this method to work.

1) Pull and kill the two guards at the bottom of the ramp to Kael.

2) Place your pet at the top of the ramp on the North side and set him to /pet guard.

3) Face your pet and run backwards in the direction your pet is facing.

4) You will hit the trigger that spawns Tanik. Hand him the vial after you hail him and go to Thurgadin to get your 4th shawl.

4 times in a row this has worked to spawn Tanik without triggering ANY Death Squads. Happy hunting!
Getting Tanik to Spawn
# Oct 15 2003 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
After triggering the Death Squad about 20 times in a row, I realized that if I ran to the gates of Kael Drakkal and did not go in and zone, Tanik was the next spawn. I triggered the Death Squad all over the place at the end of the ramp but the most frequently triggered area was on the Northern side of the ramp.

My friend tried the same technique and it worked. So far, this has only been tested twice.

Completed 4th Shawl
# Apr 20 2003 at 7:18 PM Rating: Decent
Finished the 4th shawl today. Got my pottery up to 132, by making small bowls, then medium bowls them large bowls. Did not fire any, just wrked the pottery wheel. Went to EW and found Tanik at N6750, P4403. Took about 5 minutes to get him to pop, but no Death Squads at all. Good Luck.
Dangerous Trick
# Mar 12 2003 at 10:00 AM Rating: Decent
Got this shawl the other day, but did it in a most unusual way. Per a post I saw on this site, I charmed a snow bunny to point out the hidden NPC. Firt attempt, top of ramp, death squad ate my bunny while I ran lol. Second attempt halfway down the ramp bunny pointed me out of the ramp. Sprung a full death squad of four. Decided my 41 druid needed to run, but pulled a silly.

Instead of zoning to Kael, I ran past top of ramp toward GD zone entrance. About 100 or-so feet past the ramp I hit F9, changed my view to rear and bang. . . death squad triggered our injured coldain friend and kept after me.

Having heard how hard it is to find this guy, I pulled out my vial while swinging a wide turn and got enough space between me and giants to do a quick turn in. Coldain probably sat there about 90 seconds before my turn in and poofed immediately.

Kept running of course and now the shawl is mine. Looking forward to the next step, but for those who live dangerously, consider using the death squad itself to spring your coldain contact. After all, four sets of legs pounding the snow are better than one! :)

Pet Trick
# Sep 30 2002 at 8:47 AM Rating: Decent
Helped out a guildmate the other day. She had been there for two hours and no luck. She saw a cleric come with a friend who had a pet and got him to pop within fifteen minutes, so Fluffy and I went to help. First we were to close to the bridge and he targeted the Kael Guards so we moved a bit and within five minutes of being in the new spot we had him. Then high tailed it out and ported.
completed this one tonight

Pet trick werks fine. Good ole Zamboni. Look up how tah triangulate before trying this and you'll have no problems finding the trigger spots.

I found somewhere between 10 and fifteen death squads before the little bugger crawled up outa the snow, but they were all easily outrun to Kael. Location was north and a bit east beyond the end of the ramp at about n5800, 3521.

All the trigger spots were on the ground surrounding the ramp to Kael. They weren't necesarily that close to the ramp.

I used the pet trick last night to do this part. I got a mage to put his pet at the top of the ramp, and /pet guard, then the mage ran far away so the pet would face nearest NPCs. The first two tries were death squads, which we outran to Kael, 3rd time was the dorf.
Pet Trick
# Jul 30 2002 at 3:50 PM Rating: Decent
Greetings, I did this quest a couple months ago and forgot to post about my experience. Firstly, the pet trick still does work, as of two months ago. I had my druid friend come over to my house and we went to just outside kael above the ramp. He was a 52 Druid and I was about 45 (Enchanter). First we tried the coin trick, was very difficult and we didn't get anything to spawn. Next we tried just running around the left side of the ramp. Got one DS to spawn. Next (3 hours later) we tried the pet trick.
He charmed a wulrus and we both walked the way it was pointing.
We got a couple more DS's after this. Then we both decided to charm a wulrus. This was the pivotal moment of our genious. lol.

He would have it guard, then I would run out at an angle from it and have mine guard. We would then try to figure out the intersection they were pointing at. This worked almost every time. Took about 3 more times then he got his fallen guy, then about 5 more for mine.

Also, dont' know if it was coiencednce(sp?) or not, but if you face kael on the ramp, it seemed to move from left to right, around the ramp. We did it once all the way around, then 2 more at the start.

Ok, well that was a large post.

Oh yea, he's still 52 with his 4th, and I'm a 53 Enchanter, with my 4th. Lol.

Also, my Wizard is 52 with his 2nd.

I found Tanik using the pet trick as well. But the coin trick didn't work too well for me; especially when the pet is giving facing a roaming monster in the distance. Besides, the coin trick too WAAAAY too long.

So instead, I did it the old fashion way. I would take a few steps in the direction my pet is facing and then call my pet up to bring up the rare. Have him guard to point the way and take a few more steps. I would repeat until I spawned the DS or Tanik. It only took me 3 trys to find the little dude. But if you do manage to stumble on to the DS, you have exactly 1 second to start running or FD because they will only hesistate for that long.

Most of the time I would just FD and let the DS grind my poor pet into dust. After that, wait until they either wander off or despawn and start again. But, if you are not like a lucky necro like I am, then I would advise you to either do the coin trick or hope you can outrun the DS.
Findng the sneaky guy

From what i understand, the pet trick work but being a chanter my pet is worthless so i tried the coin trick. sat on the far side of ramp with coin in hand moving it around trying to drop it. First couple of time i cot a message, " Your to far away to trade". So figured there was something that way got to where i could trade and BAM death squad. Died twice that way (ack lvl35 hell lvl). So being the hard headed person i am and determined to get this part done i head back. (Note to self: stay away from that trade area) As i contuined to click around i got a different message, " Your to far away to stumble or trade" so i head over that way. And poof there is the coldain. So remeber this guys

"Your to far away to trade" BAD Death Squad trigger

"Your to far away to stumble or trade" Good hidden coldain

Now on to Velk to collect theads

Finding Tanik
# Jan 28 2002 at 5:43 PM Rating: Decent
After three days of looking around I tried the Pet Trick, I was able to find him in 7mins. For those who are without pets, try the areas and don’t be shy about traveling a good distance out.

I found Tanik on the North Side of the Ramp a good ways out. Apparently he has several possible trigger points, the Ramp itself, North Side of the Ramp and South Side of The Ramp. Don’t worry about walking around and waiting, if you walk over him he will pop immediately.
Ok here is the scoop on this guy
# Jan 16 2002 at 3:22 PM Rating: Decent
I just did this. this A.M.. the guy can not be tracked or camped he is a triggered spawn he is laying in front of the ramp to Kael Drakkel. you have to walk over the spot that he is at to get him to spawn, but becarfull there are also death squad spawn trigger points there as well and they will put a real hurting to you. if you go to this link it will help a lot

Tanik Greskil
# Jan 12 2002 at 6:04 AM Rating: Decent
I've been camping this guy, running all over the zone with tracking on, /shout and /ooc till my fingers are sore and the whole zone is complaining about spamming (and yet no one knows...) Where to find this guy! I have the write up of the quest, and on it, it states the approx /loc of him, but I've been there for the past 12 hours and still nothing. People have mentioned that when tracking him, he is listed as, "a injured warrior"..however when I try to hail this NPC, he doesn't respond. My guess, it's not the right character. So what now? Who and where or even what is the Place Holder, for this char? I'm dying to find out! I really want this 4th shawl badly! Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Wake the heck up. Go to Equipment search.
In the Name field type the word.....SHAWL

This will bring up all the shawls in this quest line.

Select the one that has all the stats of +6.

That should help you.

P.S. Shawl 6 is the Embroidered one.

Just a thought, but why don't you people post things about this particular item and quest?
If i wanted to know about the 5th shawl i'd look up the 5th shawl.. If i wanted to know about threads needed for a totally different part of the shawl quest i wouldn't be looking at the fur lined shawl (.
Also stop complaining about the quest, if you don't want to do it that's fine.. That means one less idiot hogging the pottery wheel! No one ever said you had to do this quest anyway.

Hey guy! Your not too in touch with tayloring, are ya? If you combine two or three silks in a sewing kit (can't remember which) you will have the thread you need.

hello i completed the forth part of the shawl today was fairly easy to get all the parts
and the trade skills were easy to imporve as well.
i now have an item im happy to wear and a nice range slot item too.
the worst part of the quest was the snow griffs in ew for the third part.
the 4th part was a breeze, i spent 3 hours getting pottery up to 128 no problems
brewing and smithing to 40/ and baking to 135, baking gets you some nice stat enhancing food too
so overall no complaints i have enjoyed all the skills and can now make many diff things.
yawn onto tailoring next hehe enjoy.

Crystalline SIlk Threads
# May 11 2001 at 6:15 PM Rating: Default
They seem to only drop in Velks Lab, about one or two an hour. People in the mid-100's tailoring have failed to make the combine too :(
RE: Crystalline SIlk Threads
# Oct 02 2001 at 7:53 PM Rating: Decent
/em clears throat

Combining the no-drop THREADS from Velks is trival at 56ish. The threads are not that rare and drop in sets of 2, 3, or 4. The spiders in Safe hall and Top rare tend to drop the most. (in other words toward the top of Velks)

Okay I know this because I am working on this section of the shawl and had 20 points in tailoring before this.

I hope this will help clear up any confusion.
Step 5 Prayer Shawl
# May 11 2001 at 8:35 AM Rating: Default
I cannot believe we have yet again to master another trade for 1 point of WIS. Not only that but get your smithing and Brewings trades ready as you will not be able to reach master tailor without atleast some skill in those 2. If your lucky you have a friend who can do them. I however do not and will be stopping at step 5.

Time to move to Giant faction

a shame not everyone notices the fun and variety involved with a quest like this... its about a lot more than +1wis... i am wiz and i have 200+ int so im not doing it for the item so much as i am for the faction and the fun...my guild is going with dragon/dorf faction so it all works out great

# May 09 2001 at 12:23 PM Rating: Default
Does anyone have info on how to make the crystaline silk threads? I have searched everywhere and have found nothing that refers to a recipe for crystaline silk thread. Silk swatches are made by combining 2 silks but thread? In the traditional recipes the silk is created by combining 2 spiderling silks. Unfortunately the crystaline spiderlings drops silks and not spiderling silks. Help please!

5th part is in!!!
# May 08 2001 at 3:49 PM Rating: Default
I logged in and checked with Borannin after this last patch and guess what!! The 5th part is now in. And it appears you'll need to become a master Tailor to master it. the following was taken straight from my log

You say, 'Hail Loremaster Borannin'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Greetings, Cesare , please be seated and hear the Grand Historian, he is among the wisest of our people.

You say, 'How may I further advance my reputation?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Cesare ! Thank Brell you're here. I was about to send one of my Lorekeepers looking for you. It appears that the information Tanik acquired is most perilous indeed. The Dain has called an emergency session of the council and I must attend. We don't have the luxury of waiting for an appropriate task to arise, you must advance as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I have neither the time, nor the components to fashion the next few shawls for you. Ask Rexx Frostweaver about the prayer shawl and follow his direction carefully.

You say, 'Hail Rexx Frostweaver'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Hmmm, ye be one o them offlanders, don't ye? I've heard some strange tales o yer kind so don't be tryin' any funny business with me. I know the value of a platinum piece and I'll not get cheated by yer foreign coin.

You say, 'what prayer shawl?'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Gather five strands of crystalline silk thread and combine them in a sewing kit to make a crystalline silk fiber. Take this container and combine a glowing shardworm bile with three of the fibers to form a piece of glowing crystalline silk. Five pieces of glowing crystalline silk sewn to your fur-lined shawl will yield a beautiful silk shawl. Become a master in the art of tailoring before risking all you've worked for and be sure to let me inspect your work when it's complete.

by my calculations thats 75 crystalline silk threads that are needed to make all 5 pieces of glowing crystalline silk. My question is this. Are we supposed to hand the 5 pieces of glowing slik along with the 4th prayer shawl back to Rexx, and then he gives us the 5th shawl?

RE: 5th part is in!!!
# May 09 2001 at 1:02 AM Rating: Default
No, you don't hand in your 4th shawl. The very last step is to sew 5 pieces of glowing silk thread into your 4th shawl. Next, you hand in the new shawl to Rexx, and he should give it back to you, probably along with another item like the 3rd shawl quest (seal.)

The reason you should be a master tailor seems to be that if you fail to combine them, you loose the shawl, and have to start collecting toes, heads, and snow griffin eggs again.

Comin straight from Steve Burke, the guy from Verant who wrote the shawl and ring quest. (taken from http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/everquest/Forum1/HTML/000144.html in case you dont believe me... )

I wanted to post a few quick points here regarding the Coldain ring and shawl quests in hopes that I can answer many emails at once=).

[...]

If you fail the skill check when crafting a shawl you will get the previous shawl back, this has been the case since the quests went live.
That's it for now. Thanks for all the great emails!

- Steve Burke

So you wont lose your shawl... just the silks that take forever to collect...

Are these Silk Threads a new item in the game? I have tried to combine the silks just to get swatches, I have tried to combine the swatches with no luck, I have asked around and read the velious tayloring books but can not find mention of crystallline silk threads, anyone have any ideas?

the Crystalline SpiderLings I killed yesterday are still dropping Crystalline silk, just like the regular crystalline spiders.

I don't understand why some people complain about quests. If you don't like them, don't do them. There is plenty of info out to help you decide before you start. I'm a druid and i'm doing the quest because it is challanging and I am enjoying it. If I stop liking it I will do something else but I sure won't complain about it... shissh.
