Ocean of Tears is not a bad place to farm Raw Fine Hide (for spells 20-24), drops from goblins on the two goblin islands on the east side of the zone, specifically

an isle goblin shaman
an isle goblin wizard

Drop at a decent rate in Lavastorm

On Phinny my 33 Mage has spent several hours killing all the fire type goblins at the 4 or 5 camps around the big lava lake in front of Sol B. I've gotten 14 raw fine hides and about 40 saltpeters. The hides do most definitely drop at a rate in Lavastorm such that it would have been worth coming here about 12 levels ago. It would have been be slower as a low 20's character, but the xp would've helped to off set the time spent. Right now the gobbies range from grey to light blue, so the xp for a level 33 is not why I'm here.

Does the chief have a different name? Not finding a mob called "mucktail chief" at all.

I spent 3.5 hours, killing the Mucktail gnolls, Miners, and Guard Dogs. with my level 30 Mage.

Also killed three different people trying to PVP me. During the time Zek server.

I did get 10 Raw fine hides of Rock Breakers from the dogs and zero from the miners.

I could not count how many mobs it took, but lets just say I started killing them at level 24 Dark Blue Mobs and in 3.5 hours got to level 30 off of them by level 30 most of the mobs were grey now......I did use the LOD though. Out of those 10 I only was able to produce 6 Prepared fine hides, but got lucky in spell making it took me 3 of 6 to make my two spells. for level 22 spell Ever Fount, and Summoning Water. Little did I know I need smooth fine hide for level 23 Summon Fire, and Wuggans Appraisel....DOH ! I will need to farm Raw Fine Hides again. So I now can safely assume I need Pristine Fine Hide's for level 24 Summon Air, Wuggans Discombobulation, Wuggans Extrication and which means even more I need. And A Fine Hide for Focus Makeshift Spellcaster's essence...

So I have come to the conclusion so as not to waste ingredients, I will make the hides I need using my level 71 Necro with a 368 Research Ability, and farm Blight with Her which will 1. Kill Mobs faster, and 2. Not worry bout losing failed combos on just making the righ type of hide. If I am going to fail at least be on the spell....not on actually preparing the hide. Yes I could make the spells on my Necro but I do want to get my research up on my Mage. So I will keep a couple of spares on my Necro of each type, jusrt in case and use her as a last resort.
Or at least put these on a vendor

I could see if we were level 75 trying to get a spell but not for low 20's for christs sake. This is the part of Everquest I hate the most, hours of farming for nothing. NOT one fcking drop in 50 mob kills? Not only that I tired Mistmoore as well and killed over half the zone , not one dropped on them either....Please if any SOE game masters read these increase the drop rate for fcks sake.

How on earth are we supposed to skill up or make spells with the terrible drop rate? spent the last 2 hours farming Mucktails in Blightfire and I got a grand total of wonder people skip doing research, you make the components waaaay too hard to farm =/

I killed every Mucktail in BLightfire, Miners, Rock Crushers and not one dropped. Fricken BS DROP rate, now I know why I quit the game for months. For a level 21 spell they really need to increase the drop rate of these. There is no reason to make them with a low drop rate its not like a level 75 spell or something fricken SOE Douchebags.

I spent just about 15-20 minutes in Blighfire killing all the Mucktails that were around, and I got four of them rather quickly. They are a bit more concentrated, and saves running all over the hills looking for one mob at a time.

Where are the raw fine hides?

These are hard to find. I have cleared out the goblin soothsayer in Lake of Ill Omens and all other goblins 3 times before moving on. Killed about 50 to 60 Mucktail minors and even the foreman about 6 times and no drops yet. So I move on to kill Cinder goblin wizards, priest, sages and all other goblins for about 2 to 3 hours in Lavastorm and still no luck with raw fine hides. I have tried looking in bazaar but no one sells these low hides. Dumpster diving in POK, CR, BFM, GL and GH gave me no luck either. I am out of ideas and would like to see any recent results of finding these hides to make my 20 to 24 spells. BTW I am now 36 Enchanter and have been looking since level 20.

Found raw fine hides off the gnolls in the moors, 2 sweeps of the mines I have 4, found none the first run at all, then 3 in a row 2nd run. But I had no luck anywhere else besides here, killed the moor rats for 3 hours and got not one.

With my level 59 Magician, I cleared out all the Dire Rats and Greenscale Vipers I could find for 30 minutes - got 2 Raw Fine Hides to drop. I went into the Mucktail mines and cleared out all the miners - twice; got 1 more Raw Fine Hide to drop. After that, for the heck of it, I cleared out all the Rock Breakers outside the mines - once; picked up 4 more Raw Fine hides from that.

Your mileage may vary...

Your Face is Raw Fine Hide
# Aug 24 2008 at 7:42 PM Rating: Decent
I got a few 'Raw Fine Hides' from parking myself between the two Treants in South Karana (NE corner of the zone LOC:+1500, -3700). I got three fine hides and four supple hides in about an hour. Other places are certainly faster, but this is certainly the most brainless. The treants will automatically attack anyone of any level if you have bad faction with them (which would be any evil race), and they have a fairly short spawn time (3 minutes). You can watch a movie, do your taxes, eat panini sandwiches, etc. to your hearts content and just let the hides just roll in.

I would suggest that only evil races try this, since there are some faction hits:

-Jaggedpine Treefolk
-Protectors of Pine
-QRG Protected Animals
-Guards of Qeynos

+Unkempt Druids

Just confirming on this. They do in fact drop off sarnaks in the fort. Still not common by any means, but I have had more luck here then anywhere else so far. Cleared the fort twice and got 3...... After killing for awhile I realized I wasn't paying any attention to what was dropping the Raw fine hides. So the last 3 I needed I paid attention. All 3 came off of Sarnak Adherants, so perhaps these are the only ones that drop them.

Also, be aware that if you are farming specifically for these, pay attention to what you are looting, they also drop Raw Supple Hides.

Drops in Lavastorm Off a Cinder Goblin Wizard

Dropped off a cinder goblin wizard yesterday, dark blue to my 21 chanter - in a nice camp of gobbies near the entrance to Naggy's Lair. Two untwinked chars (21 chanter, 23 mage) broke it easily.

The theory I have seen put forth elsewhere on the forums about the hides dropping off caster types near your level, in camps or dungeons, seems to be proving correct. So far I've gotten the lower level spell hide drops off dark blue caster mobs in camps.

It definitely is. However, "near your level" being "the mob's level". Look at the hide or parchment/scroll, there is a level indicated on them. A given caster mob that falls in the range, will commonly drop that hide, uncommonly the lower and rare the higher. Also, goblins drop more research, gnolls and orcs more smithing components.

By far your best bet of obtaining these at the levels you need them is LDoNs, since they have a bunch of casters, are around your level and in a dungeon. Everfrost - if you get the goblin variety - is the best bet, however not every Everfrost version has goblins.

Best resource outside LDoNs for these, seems to be globlin evokers in Permafrost. I will update their drop lists.
