I had this drop off Travenro the Skygazer earlier tonight.
Nice !
# Mar 18 2003 at 1:23 PM Rating: Decent
This is a nice stick to wield. It is usable at 50, I got mine at 49 and effect said i was insufficent lvl. at 49 you get Bond of Death and this effect is basicaly a mana free BoD with a longer cast. very usefull indeed! add the HP, MANA and INT and this makes for a nice stick indeed. Oh and the graphic is just a plain ole brown stick for those Style concious types. Good luck on obtaining yours.

Finally, this has been fixed. The effect now works. You will notice most of the hit points in the last few ticks of the dot. So don't freak if you don't see the benefit's right away.
RE: yay
# Dec 22 2002 at 1:12 PM Rating: Decent

Staff now works. Late November EQ announced on test that they were working on the fix for this staff. Patch before last the staff was fixed. The effect appears to start off very low and by the end of the effect you see a large amount of hit points gained.

This staff is great for grouping in the planes. You can send in your pet once MT has engaged and then drop this dot on the mob and you are set. If your group lacks some dps just land a dot or two.

I think I have seen this effect resisted in Plane of Nightmares before as a level 56, now 57, necro. With it's very long casting time that can be a pain. But great staff and great effect.
Mine doesnt work.....
# Oct 05 2002 at 5:01 PM Rating: Decent
I just aquired this item - the soul well casts, and i get the effect icon, but I can see no damage to the target or increase in my hp even if I let it run its full course, can anyone tell me what is amiss? I am level 51, is there a minimum level for it to work perhaps?
RE: Mine doesnt work.....
# Dec 08 2002 at 8:22 AM Rating: Decent
it's ATM broken and gives only 1hp/tick (has been broken for month)

it seems like the effect has just (8/12/02) been fixed on Test, we'll see if it really happened in the next LIVE patch
# Apr 01 2002 at 2:43 AM Rating: Decent
Correction... after watching my hp go up with soul well, it appears soul well is a splurt-like lifetap, in that it gives you 20hp/tick to start, increasing to 40, topping off at 100 for the last few ticks. Seems to heal around 900hp. Mana free bond of death = cool.
More info.
# Mar 29 2002 at 4:06 AM Rating: Decent
Got this today in VP.

13.5 second cast time on the staff, lifetap based, you must equip to use. Seems to be approx a 750pt lifetap, less than bond of death, but not by much. Has a stacking bug... will not take hold if you have lich up, but if you cast soul well first, you can then lich, and they will stack.

I lose 6hp/tick in the new arch lich with soul well up. With my zland heart equipped this drops to 1hp/tick, and when I get innate regen, hp loss will be cancelled out completely.

Very nice item for soloing. With epic snare, velketor IB bracer, and this, I can solo without using any mana at all.

Well, here is the info from the spdat.eff:

Soul Well
Hit Points (HP) - Unknown Formula

Classes: None

Skill: Alteration
Allowable Targets: Drain

Range to Target: 200 feet

Resistance Check: Magic

Mana Required: 360
Spell Duration: 10 ticks (60 seconds)
Duration Formula: 2
Casting Time: 7.0 seconds
Spell Recovery: 2.50 seconds
Recast Delay: 10.0 seconds

Spell cast on you: You feel your life force drain away.
Spell cast on someone: Soandso staggers.
Spell fades: The bond fades.

I can only assume it's a splurt-like lifetap dot. Starting out small then gradualy doing more and more damage over time.
so whats the proc do?

Umm, 85 mana is better than 20 int at 60, because chances are at 60 you have a 200 plus intelligence already so any 20 more intelligence is going to translate into only 20 more mana, 20 2 20 int items are actually worse than a 20 int 85 mana if youve already got intelligence maxed
# Jan 14 2002 at 2:59 AM Rating: Decent
Well, not anymore! With the release of Luclin, int past 200 now provides half mana. So, at level 60, 1-200 int gives 12 mana per int, I believe, so 201+ gives 6 per. Not a huge ammount and I still try to stay arround 200, but it's a lot more than the crappy 20 mana for 20 int pre Luclin.
alls fair in love, war and EQ

Sigh... where to start. Everyone gets good items. Everyone gets nerfed. (well maybe not monks, rangers and warriors) And everyone gets a little glimmer of class envy every once in a while. Necros took some hard cut backs in our abilities, but you know what? I'm proud of myself when I give mana to the healer so they save the tank, or heal the enchanter when the healer is oom, or get screaming terror to stick on something that the enchanter can't get mez off on. So I don't think necros have it that bad. And I think we do have a bad rep, but then again alot of necros are 12 year old bratty kids who have no people skills. I think people should complain less, and try to look on thr bright side...there's always kittens on the moon next year =)

Why is it that out of all the classes, necros get it the worst from people? I cant recall in the two years of playing my necro to have ever attempted to mock, or belittle any other in any other thing, its all in the user, truly...Ok, just to put up my own defense of this old subject of necros being worthless in a party...well, as one example from many: Last night my guild was raiding Fear..simple raid, really, till we got to the Draco...after sending pet (yes pet) I then began pacting the melee in group, feeding the cleric from afar(due to /target ____ feed, retarget) dot/tap/nuke draco, etc...after just about all of the 40+ members of the guild were killed (due to a druid kiting an add, thus bringing more) I FDed, only after seeing about 4-5 left alive...I was the sole survivor of that massacre...I /quit out, came back and began dragging bodies to SS. Now, im not giving 'props' to myself, or anything just stating a point: You play with what you learn from the game, and work with it! And I am proud of my choice, regardless of the bad attitude geared at the general necro name. Oh, and BTW..the second time we attacked the Draco..the 'gimp' group of a paladin, a ranger, and myself Ksed the Draco, and gained XP over all the other well put together full groups there...what a good feeling that was:)

Necros Suck?
# Apr 18 2001 at 12:58 PM Rating: Decent
Just to clue the powergamers in... This is a game. Simple right? No, we have players who formulate out things so that they can whine. Uber guilds... Okay, what happened to fun? Allign some smaller guilds get your epics. Problem solved. Icksnay on this whining jazz. Necros are as any other class. They must be optimally played. They are perhaps one of the most complicated classes. Warriors and Monks watch HPs. Rangers and Pallies watch HPs and mana. Druids, Shamen, Clerics watch group HPs and mana, but Necros must keep up with thier mana, group mana, group HPs, group mana, DoTs... you see what I'm saying? Its not the class or the epics that suck... it's you people. Quit complaining and get out of the trap, end of story. Oh, and the endless RE:s. I'll go ahead and answers you. WHA WHA WHA! Mommie took away my bottle.

Hate to disagree with you, but I play a chanter and a necro (as well as a warrior, a monk, a ranger, a mage, and a rogue). I have a bit of experience in just about every class. Enchanter so far has been the most difficult and challenging to play. When I get tired of Seb and dealing with groups, I bring on my necro. He's only 31 but I find it very nice that I can still solo yellows at lvl 31. I have not found it to be a difficult class to play at all.
That's my 2cp

>>well all you nrcros that were angery over being nerfed....<< Yes, we were. We got over it. How often have warriors been nerfed? Ok, thought so.

>>veritant's apology this staff...<< Not hardly. And I'm not even going to say V-E-R-A-N-T. Oops, just did it... =P

>>umm when will us warriors get a good grear huh<< Can you say KUNARK??? Until Velious, Kunark was a festering pustule as far as CASTERS in general cared. Except for deep deep in the heart of the really nasty zones, which leads to your next--

>>no realy wanted able armor after crafted and thats not to hard to get if you have the uber guild..<< Hmmm...did you happen to notice where this staff drops?

>>our epic suck and is the hardest to get and its two handed ummm i thought we were the one hand slash kings???<< LOL, don't EVEN get a necro started on our Duck Stick. If you knew much about the warrior epic, (since you know how hard it is to attain) I am pretty sure it splits into 2 1HS'ers???? Oh, that's right, IT DOES.

Don't cry about another class getting a good item, ok? The truly great toys, most of us will never see. I'll probably never see this one, for example. Love to have it, yes. Ever get it? Doubtful, but doesn't mean I'll not try!

At high lvls, the game isn't group oriented, it's guild oriented. If you aren't/can't get in a good one, retire. Plain and simple as that. If you have friends that ask you along, the guild will still take precedence, at least if it's their raid/event. Nothing wrong with that, just the way it happens from what I've seen.

And keep in mind, that this is VERY hard to get, and not really that great when compared with the stats you get from holding two slot items (eg stein of moggok or bowl from frozen tower, hand of reaper). If the effect is right click, does not take forever to cast and is worthwhile, this might actually be used. If it is a melee proc, this staff is eye candy only.

If you follow this thread, you'll notice that the Necro's were quiet 'til the morons were let off their chains. Necros have been nerfed harder than ANY other class. Nerf a druid. Nerf a Mage. Nerf a friggin wizard who can quad kite at nearly no risk. Leave us alone. We are fine where we are, as long as idiots leave us alone. Jerks.

DOn't tell me that some of the nerfs to the necro class weren't warranted. Necros are still THEN BEST SOLO CLASS IN THE GAME. Hands down. Necros have no room to ***** about trying to get other classes nerfed. Lets see any mage, wizard, or druid go up against a Necro. You say a Wizard can quad Kite with virtyally no risk? (Huh, till snare breaks.) That's why almost anytime you head to Skyfire you see at least 2 or 3 necros in the zone SOLOING. I'm not saying nerf Necros more. but I am saying Necros have NO place to scream for V(not gonna say it) to nerf any other classes when they are the most powerful in the game as is.

Necros are not even the BEST solo class, Aluien. Your class can solo easier, by far. Mages are a little better, but close. Their DD and strength of the pets are awesome. I watched a 50 mage (this being before the guard buffing) friend of mine sic his earth pet on the two guards in front of Oggok. Killed them BOTH. He did nothing, other than buff his pet at beginning of fight, and maybe damage shield. As far as fear kiting... druids/mage/wiz have big DD. We have to rely on dots. To be most efficient, the mob has to be in place, or moving away from us. Safe? Not like people think. Fear has a nasty habit of dropping at the worst possible moment, ala Invis/Camo. Darkess has a much shorter duration compared to snare. Back to druids. Yes, I have a lvl 51 druid. Snare line lasts forever. Starfire x3 = dead or nearly dead giant, been a while since I played him =). The biggest advantage we have is mana regen. That's about it. You can quad kite, if I recall. Necro can solo one at a time. Once again, yes, we have ways of regaining mana faster. But that doesn't come close to 4 mobs at a time. And the kicker? You still "bring something" to a group. Experienced players/groups will have us for extra damage, true. But not often enough. Most powerful class in the game? No, not nearly. Just because one numbskull necro screams to nerf another class, everyone brings out the old necros-are-the-most-powerful-class thing. We've not been that in a long time. 35-44, we MIGHT be the most powerful still, even with all the nerf lumps we've taken. But during that time when you should be forging strongs ties and friendships, we are generally scorned. And I'm NOT complaining. I chose a necro for the soloing ability, I don't have time to run around looking for groups, waiting hours on end for guild raids, etc. I have made friends, yes. I've joined a guild or two, yes. Not my style, and I realize that. I'll probably hang it up around 51-52, when I can solo no longer. And once again, please don't take this wrong, but I was/am bored with my druid. And likewise mages out there, I'm not asking for you to get a nerfing! You ARE the masters of summoning, and I can see why your pets should be the beasts they are. We are what we are, all of us. That what I was trying to get across in my last post, which apparently people didn't like. Oh well. We all have strengths and weaknesses...although I can't think of one for a druid off the top of my head! j/k =P And I also play a mage on Fennin Ro. Ok, not anywhere close to being high lvl with him, but I'm there at least. It just gets old, nerf the necro nerf the necro...almost makes me wish we still had Abashi! Ok, maybe not... Just play your class, and if you don't like what another can do, deal with it. Or play that class instead.

Perhaps your little Druid self has never seen a Magician pet in action..hmm...well lets just say I have seen a 51 Magi summoned pet, conned even to a 45th Monk waste said Monk in oh about 10-15 secs...and I have done/seen many tests Magi vs Necro pets and Magi pets are always ahead PERIOD...oh I have a 51st Magi btw and when I camp stuff its usually the bloody pets soloing the whole place, and I just throw a few nukes and sit back down if they are higher lvl MOBs. And yes Necros are powerful...but lets say at 50+ a Necro and another of any other class shout for a grp...whos going to get it...Necros are usually bottom on everyones list...well unless the need CR in a place like Chardok...anyway my point of that is at higher lvls...Necros HAVE to be able to solo for lack of grping yes the may SEEM like the most powerful class but they are just powerful soloers..Oh and about the Necro vs a Wizzy..if a higher lvl Wizzy plays his/her char right the Necros toast Fast cast time+Stuns = Dead Necro...until Necros get better tap spells at higher lvls that is..and when your talking about the Wizzys snare "Breaking" you must mean when it "wears" off or the "spell duration ends"..which is 2.5 min..plenty of time for them to toss a few pillars of frost out..hmm can you say 755-800dd to a 15 ft AoE with a bloody 4.5 cast time and uses 325 mana, if I did my math right they would be way oom before that snare "broke"..and the MOBs..all 4 of em..would be way what a Wizzy can't solo the same stuff a Necro can in Skyfire, they get the same xp off their 4 MOBs, in BW or whatever, that a Necro would get off their one soloed in Skyfire... I currently have a 38th Necro a 46th Druid and a 51st Magi, and I must say fun wise the Necro is far better. Magi got boring at 51st and the Druid has been boring since like 34th, I plan to make the Necro my primary now and look forward to soloing Skyfire and bringing out the envy in Druids like you..while inside I know you'll get in any grp before I ever would..unless the need help summoning the corpses after a botched raid..well thats all I've got to say..probally did'nt cover all bases but oh well, send any replies you like, after I read a few more posts on the other boards about how much Necros should be nerfed and about the current thoughts that V is having about Nerfing them I will be ready to reply to your next post also..

Well, I just started to play a meelee class recently...err, actually a hybrid. Reason being because I kept getting killed regularly against even cons as my lvl 20 Necro and even had some trouble soloing blues ( and yes, I had the lvl 20 pet). And i saw my friend, a lvl 20-22 paly was now able to solo blues without losing much hp or mana at all. So, tired of dying, I decided to play a ranger (hehe, ah the irony of it all). I'm now lvl 16, almost 17, and i can solo blues easily and gain exp faster through soloing than I did with my Necro. At lvl 17 I get dual wield and soloing will be even easier. The really nice thing is that my ranger doesn't SUCK in groups like my necro does.

I just wanted to say my peace. Necros are not overpowered like many say they are. I'm still not sure why people insist on saying they are. They may have used to be, but it's just not the case anymore.

hmm, as a 20 necro, i could kill yellows easily. in lake of ill omen, i could take two blues, one after the other, or a single yellow, (even a red once) before having to med)...

it's all in the tactics and intelligent playing..
(darkness, send pet, flutter, blood, leach, fear) that order, i can kill well. and i'm not even twinked with gear.

#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 16 2001 at 11:04 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I would have to agree. I sometimes play my friend's necro, although my primary character is a paladin. All of the tank classes are very equipment-dependent, especially paladins. My friend's 40th level necro can walk into Dreadlands buck-naked with one bone-chip and fear-kite all day long. Certainly can't say that about any tank class. Necros are truly the most powerful class.
