143 trivial

Fillet knife and bear meat and a spit. Sit at the vendor in shadow haven nearest the bank and opposite the soulbinder, this is next to the zone in pool. Buy bear meat for about 1pp per stack. Combine fillet knife and bear meat until skill is 143. Buy more meat as needed, you wont have to close the tradeskill window, ie unlimited bear meat provided you have the plat. Failed combines wont matter. Sell off the fillets since they are just normal food and go make fishrolls, bat wings an fish. Bat wing and fish can be purchased in POK for pretty cheap and make nice long lasting food. 143 is above the trivial for this quest. My bard made 143 baking and cost about 400 plat with intelligence of 83. Its alot faster when you have alot of wis/int.

If you have shawl 2 and someone has this on them you can get them to hand it in and you hand in your shawl 2 after. You skip the whole tradeskill part
Baking Skill
# Feb 17 2004 at 12:43 PM Rating: Excellent
I'm in the middle of these shawl quests for my cleric, and I was very concerned about my baking skill not being up to snuff. It's easy and cheap to get your baking skill up to 191 - here's how i did it:

There's an NPC merchant in shadowhaven right near the nexus zone in. SHe sells lion and bear meat. Get yourself a filet knife, and combine it in a spit or oven with one piece of either meat. It returns the knife, and when you get close to trivial, a filleted lion or bear, depending on what meat you used. You can do this all the way up to 143!!

Next, get yourself a non-stick frying pan, and a TON of each of these: cheese (jaggedpine forest vendor item), lion/bear meat, and loaf of bread. Now combine one of each of the food items with your frying pan in a spit or oven to make a patty melt! it's a "banquet sized" meal that you'll have stacks of when finished, and you can do this up to 191 skill!

In a matter of about 3 hours, with 207 wis, i went from 0 to 171 skill in baking using this method. and i watched all (well a few) of my shawl quest worries dissipate. now for brewing and pottery... hmmmmmm.

Personally, i kept the patty melts cuz they last forever, and gave all the filleted bear away to newbies in SH.

jusy go buy lotsa bat wings and lotsa fresh fish and a spit. now sit somewhere and combine, comebine, combine. doesnt matter if you fail skill still goes up. you can do this till skill gets to 135/trivial. this is the fastest most cost-efficient way to get your baking skill up that i have seen. fifteenofive 53rd season cleric <Enlightened Knights> Innoruuk server
Abysmal Sea for Baking
# Jan 26 2005 at 7:57 AM Rating: Decent
As an update, the Abysmal Sea is now the place to go for baking...all the supplies described above are available, including the cheese. They even have chocolate now.

To get there, go to any Wayfarer Magus, say Nedarias Landing, and then ask the Magus there to send you to the Abysmal Sea.

Happy baking!

BTW - there are free, but time-consuming tasks for all tradeskills here that will take you to level 56.

At level 39 on my enchanter i got my pottery and baking to 135 before starting. Get into a frost giant group in GD if you are worried about faction(if you cant get in one just hit the giants while a group kills them). I would also suggest going to lavastorm and kill basilisks for their eggs as combining them to make dough gives you 15 if you dont already have dough. The first part was easy, just go to bazaar and buy tundra kodiak meat for around 75pp then make the sandwhich. For the Snowbunny Stew go to EW and shout or auction for it, most likely someone will send you a tell(you also need a pot for this which is why i got my pottery to 135). Again, go to EW and get in an ulthork group or shout/auction for meat, make the pie tin and then the clump of dough with the basilisk eggs I mentioned earlier. This is the last and hardest part, the Snow Griffon Souffle. Go back to EW and if you cant solo or track the griffons i suggest getting a partner(i got a 51 bard to help me) after constant tracking/killing we got 4 eggs to drop in approx. 3 hours. Combine the ingrediants to make the souffle and quickly turn it in before you have a chance to eat it.(in case your wondering i had kindly/warmly faction for doing quest 1 2 and 3) DONT FORGET TO TURN IN THE NAPKINS ALSO! =)

Yes, the snow griffon souffle is no drop, as are the eggs. I believe all the finished meals are no drop, but it's been a while since I've done the baking so I may be mistaken.
Mixing bowls

These are easy to make, most pottery vendors carry the large bowl sketch needed,I was making them at 30.2 large blocks of clay, water flask, large bowl sketch.Old trivial was 95,not sure if thats changed
skillups :P
# Apr 28 2002 at 5:20 PM Rating: Decent

Yeah that is true, I'll be sittin there makin somethin with no skillups for like 15 minutes and suddenly get like 5 or 6 points up in quick succesion. I don't know why that happens, I thought it was random. Programming on this game is anything but obvious :P
Skillups and such

One thing I seem to hear alot, is that people like to do trade skills and get something out of them. I think that's great. And if you're OK with a slow progression and a higher expense, terrific.

However, a large number of people are interested in skillups to get to a certain point. If that's you, then the cheapest recipe with the highest trivial is best. Yes, you're going to fail alot, but who cares, that doesn't affect skillups.

Brewing: Veggie Oil (1 foraged veggie and 1 flask of water -- no bottle required) -- useless item, sell back to vendors if you get any.

Pottery: Unfired small bowls. Just destroy any you make.

Baking: Forager? Get to Lavastorm and kill Lava Basilisks until you have a stack of eggs. Combine 1 egg with 1 milk and 1 flour and make a clump of dough. Basilisk eggs yield 15 clumps (300 clumps for a stack of 20 eggs, 20 milks and 20 flours - not bad eh?). Then get a pie tin (make one with pottery since you worked so hard on it) and combine tin, a clump of dough, and either a veggie, fruit or berry (pie tin returned on failed or successful combines). Bam, for the cost of 20 milk and 20 flour you have 300 attempts at pies. If you're not a Forager (or don't have a best friend who's one), then fishrolls (batwing and fresh fish) are the best bet.

Remember, when trying to raise skillups is your goal, failed combines don't matter. Cost of production does.

If you are after fast skill ups in baking and have a small amount of Smithing skill then make yourself a Filleting Knife (3Metal Bits+1 Scaler Mold+1Water Flask) and make Filleted Wolf Lion or Bear. This item Triv's at 143 and the meats can be bought from many of the Baking Vendors in the cities. I know for a fact that they can be bought in Thurgadin and ShadowHaven because i have bought them in both of them.

And as a small side line if you dont need your Int stat for anything try making Beer Braised meats. These Triv at 68 and provide +2 to Str Agi or Sta depending on the meat used. A cheap and easy way to give a small boost to your prefered Stat.

Great Post.

I wanted to add a comment and see if other players have noticed the same thing. I have mastered many tradeskills and even gone over 200 in one and have noticed that I seem to get skillups more frequently and easily when the item I am making isn't "too difficult". In other words, it seems that as I approach the trivial level for whatever item I am attempting, I skillup more frequently. This would suggest one might possibly want a balance between cost and difficulty in order to raise skill.

Anyone else notice this?

Of course, if time isn't at all an issue (as well as getting carpal tunnel syndrome), making a very inexpensive item hundreds and hundreds of times may still be the best way to raise skill. Another consideration is how easily materials can be gathered (or bought) and if said materials are stackable. For instance, when raising skill in brewing I always look for recipes that do not require casks, otherwise there are too many trips back and forth to the vendor.

RE: Skillups and such
# Oct 21 2002 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
I also noticed the increase in Skill ups as i approached Trivial in a particular item. so far i have taken Brewing , Fletching and Baking to Master 100+ level and have done Smithing 3 times to 100+ so I've had plenty of oppertunity to see the nuances of this. Having said that I did notice the Rush effect Anornae was refering to.

In my opinion both of these effects are in place for valid reasons. The Near Trivial effect is simply a reflection on real life, where as you get closer to mastering the creation of a given item the less times you fail at creating it. And also to give players who are learning a skill the old fashioned way (by Trail and Error)a reason for not sticking with a combination that works even though they never actually make the item in question.
As for the Rush Effect its just a Sweetie Reward system, ie. If you stick it out through the long periods of no advances, then we'll give you a big treat to keep you coming back for more.

I reckon the path you chose to follow in Trades is down to your reason for doing the skill in the first place. If you want to be a Grand Master for the Pride of Achievement then you will take the varied combinations route that takes you through dozens of Trivials (this route also applies if you are low on cash and need to resell as much of your work as poss cos you'll get more successful combinations)and you will see more of the Near Trivial Effect.
If however you are doing a Trade for a specific target such as a needed Tradeskill Item for a quest which you cant get someone else to make, you will go for the 1 combination / high Triv route where you find a cheap recipe and swallow the losses and you will likely see more of the Rush Effect.

All i need to do now is get to Grand Master in Smithing for Prides sake and get to Master in Tailoring for questing and im set )))

PS sorry for the length of this post hehehe.

aye, i have noticed that as well, i currently have a 166 skill in brewing, ( 200 in alcohol tolerance ), and have been trying to get to grandmaster for a while. while making Ol Tujims Fierce Brew ( hops, barley, yeast, malt, cask trivial at 135 ) i noticed that i seemed to skill up faster when i got closer to its trivial. now that i have moved on to Minotaurs Hero Brew ( 3 malt, 1 yeast, 2 water, 2 short beer, cask, trivial at 248 ) i'll go through stacks of components before i get just one skillup. i dont think having only 90 wis and 84 int helps tho =(
RE: Skillups and such
# Apr 24 2002 at 4:16 AM Rating: Decent
It has seemed to me that skillups tend to come in clumps, regardless of the trivial, especially when heading into a round number, like 36-39 or 40 will come in really quick succession. I could be wrong, its so hard to know, but i don't think it has anything to do with how close one is to a trivial on something.

It could be chance, and i think many people look at it like chance, but i personally think that the game is built that way - it gives the player a rush to see so many advances and makes them want to push forward through the slow times to get that rush again. (like a variable reinforcement schedule of sorts... or well hehe like drug highs ;-ppp ...its just sound psychology ;-p).

So that's what i've noticed - that it seems to happen almost cyclically.

Getting this item is probably the best part of the quest. Hell, I even replaced my Shardwurm Eye (+5INT +3DEX) for this item and I still have an INT of 201. And secondly, in this quest, you're getting two items that would give you a total of 6AC 6INT 6SVCOLD 3SVMAGIC and 30MANA. Like I said, this is a quest worth doing.

Hi all!
ok for all question related to skills ( recepies, supplies....) you should direct your attention to www.eqtraders.com

it's the best place to find all the supplies you need so you can plan your skill advancement.

plus you can shop where you get the best prices.

I have a druid wood elf and my faction in Gf is "ally",i went to all the merchant to check wich one gives the best prices. I sell everything to this guy because i can get almost 40% better prices on items.

When i need something quick and dont mind paying a bit more, i go to Thurgadin at the Bank. They have almost everything there.
( of course being able to TP does help 8-) )

Hope that helps.

Fish rolls in FP to become master baker. Fish from port authority, batwings from casters guild.

Master pottery so you can make a mixing bowl and a pot. Just buy a backpack full of water, the rest of the supplies are in the bank in Thurg. Make small bowls and dont fire them. Firing doesn't raise skill so don't waste the money buying firing sheets. Just destroy any bowls you make.

You are going to need pottery for the 4th shawl anyway.
Raising Baking

You can get baking up to 135 by first making batwing crunchies (to 46), then fish fillets (to 82), and finally fish rolls (to 135). All the ingredients for these items can be puchased in either FP or EC, and they are not expensive. Recipes and locations to purchase ingredients are available from www.eqtraders.com

If you're a monk you can work up your fishing skill and practice FD and ID while you catch the fish.

I raised my baking skill from 0 on fish rolls...
I don't think it's something I'd recommend!
Ultimately, I gained 107 points in baking through combining 40 stacks of fish and wings... This is with 154 INT.
At the very least, I'd recommend doing something else to raise skill to at least 50, since after this level, my progress seemed to speed up. (Wings and frosting, for crunchies, perhaps.)
On the upside, this was conveinient for me, as an Iksar, 'cos I sat under the docks and paid people to to do trade runs for me.

I started at 21 since I had tons of training points being a Wizard in my 30's. However, I went from 21 - 109 in significantly less then 40 stacks. Took me about 45 minutes and maybe 15pp to master baking this way. Also gave me enough fish rolls to pass around to my monk friends (they love the 0.1 weight and banquet size meals).

Hi Fisrt Post:
The third part of the this quest, I read on other related post that he pops in two areas of EW one near the bridge LocNeg 6644 Pos 4337 and the other at the top of ramp to Kael on left side. My question is after reading those posts, it seem to be able to get the 4th part without doing 1, 2 and 3. If this is true what a waste of a quest. I have been doing baking 137 pottery 160 smithing 60 just to start this quest, could someone pls let me know if it is so.

Each part of the quest, at the beginning, is relatively simple. However, you need to complete the first three parts of this set of quests to do any of the further quests - after the first quest, each consecutive quest requires the shawl received from the previous quest (Cloth requires that you turn in Burlap, and silk requires cloth (er whatever the third one is)). You cannot simply skip ahead.

None of these quests are a waste of time, if you think the later shawls available are worth all the work.

Hello All,

The Shawl line of quests and grand indeed, and I love the fact they included trade skills. For those of you whole would like to complete the quests (this handy item is a by-product of the 3rd Shawl) but are afraid Baking is too hard to raise, worry no longer. Following the steps below will get you to well over master baker in less than 2 hours!

1) Find an Oven, or better yet buy a spit.
2) Head out to EC/Freeport area. You'll be buying from three shops. In EC:Inn One (Frosting, Sauses) Inn Three (Batwings) In EastFP: Docks (Fresh Fish)
3) Prepair the following recipes:
-Batwing Crunchies (1Batwing+1Frosting in Oven/Spit) until 40's
-Fish Fillets (1FreshFish+1Jug of Sause in Oven/Spit) until 80's
-Fish Rolls (1Batwing+1FreshFish in Oven/Spit) untill 135

You'll now have more than enough skill to complete the quest!
The seal vs The Frozen Orb
# May 09 2001 at 5:41 AM Rating: Good
For those of you spending all your time and effort trying to get a frozen orb, instead buy yourself 200 bat wings and 200 fish, and become a master baker in 2 hours (121) do part one and 2 of the quest then do this, the Seal in my opinion is BETTER than the Frozen Orb for several reasons.

1. Resistances -- At high level these play a major factor in our character the orb has NONE this is +3 magic and cold, u loose -10 MANA with the seal vs the orb.

2. Its a in line quest, By having this item anyone that know anything about the quest will say to themselves (this guy is a master baker that went and did the whole quest), the genius of this series is you cant have a whole lotta help, about the only help you can have, is for people to help you kill the MoBs that drop the items the rest of the cooking you gotta do yourself.

This is by far the hardest of all 4 of the stages I have done so far, The next part Tannik is a breeze.

I agree with you for the most part, but I would point out you DO NOT have to do all the cooking yourself - this is multiquestable. You can have a master baker do all your cooking for you, they hand food items to appropriate target, then you hand in napkin. You'll receive credit for the quest, and the part you need to continue. I did the quest this way, since even after mastering Baking (skill 135) I failed three times in a row to make Bunny Stew ;).

Ok, for all of you who are looking for the pattern ... they are available at ANY pattern vendor! Well, ok, at most vendors. The problem is, the patterns are named WRONG!!! If you get a vendor with pattern (I got mine in the shop next to the Freeport Bank) check if he offers 2 (yes TWO) large bowl patterns. The pattern cost exactly the same and stack together, but ... the 2ND one ( NUMBER TWO) is the MIXING BOWL PATTERN. It is just named wrong. If you potter em with the right recipe for the mixing bowl they will be accepted and soon you have your mixing bowl to complete the quest.

Woot this item ROCKS hard I got mine tonite, heh Eastern Wastes is taken over by casters killing bunnies and griffins, etc. I have around 140-168 skill in baking (so long ago i forget)and i didnt fail at all and everything was trivial. Ha people made fun of me when i was making fish rolls while medding way back when but it just paid off. I'm not wearing the 3rd shawl yet (maybe the 4th) but i am wearing this. Congrats on this quest line verant. the exp kinda sucked but got several faction hits with the dain. Cant wait until 4th one is put in since i just raised my brewing too :) This gives off light too, at first I thought it gave me ultravision.. not sure on that though now but its definitely a decent light source too. Got mine last night (1/20/2001). The snow griffins seem to be spawning less these days though and only drop the eggs about 1/4 of the time in my experience. It could be that they're just hunted more often though. All items were trivial to me at 135 baking, although I had to raise my smithing to 70 to get the pie tins half of the time, and my pottery to make the ceramic linings for the pie tins. (30 on the pottery gave me about 70% success rate on the ceramic linings) The hard part was finding the vendors to raise the skills. As far as raising baking, I bought a spit and teleported to WC. Then I'd buy 100 fish from the barbarian near the lake, then run to inn3 in EC and buy 100 batwings from the inexhaustable vendor there. Try all 100 in the spit, buy another 100 batwings and run back to the barbarian vendor for another 100 fish. Repeat until you max skill at 135 for fish rolls. Both items are cheap (1 to 3 sp each) and reasonably close to each other. The spit was invaluable, as it is a pain to find an oven sometimes, and you don't have to fight over one.
hmmm..
# Jan 23 2001 at 3:06 PM Rating: Default
I didn't use a Spit. I use 1 Shark Meat and 1 Bat Wing in the oven, and it's almost to 135.
