vs. Black Panther Leggings?
# Jan 18 2004 at 6:34 PM Rating: Decent
Oiled Greaves (wt 1.5 AC: +15 Str: +7 HP: +20 Mana: +5) vs. Black Panther Leggings (wt 0.6 AC: +8 Str: +4 Dex: +5 Sta: +5)

Thoughts?

I'm inclined to sell the Oiled and bank the extra plat for other slots. I'm 30 Iksar Monk and play to casually to count on ever seeing 45 (it aint happen'n). So what would you do?

Go ahead, flame away people, that seems to be all of what goes on anymore, on these boards, with you guys and your lvl 30 mains commenting on gear that drops in tier 3+ planes and lvl 50+ Zones and how each other class sucks and what not.

Anyways, these things are an extremely rare drop off of almost any of the named drake/wyvern type mobs that inhabit this zone. Take it from someone who has spent a LONG time here, it takes patience to get any decent drops. I consider myself very lucky to have gotten 2 Decisive Boots of the Kin as well as 1 Winter's Fury. Not much else to mention other than a ton of useless sentry armor and some guardian junk i couldn't use either. Anyways, those of you on kael faction, or workin that way, or like me, who couldn't care less what faction you're on, good luck on the pants, the drop rate on them sucks like everything else in the zone... Just have patience and keep killing the drakes.

BTW, I do think these are GREAT monk pants, put my set on my monk, but being all/all, with hp's, i wouldn't hesitate to put em on a caster who already has near maxxed INT and could use the ac/hp, as not much else compares to them for casters. If you wanna go head and flame me for my post, feel free to, then log on your lvl 30 main and try and get a pair without buying them... I dare you.

Very true,
Ya know i hear so much damn flaming towards monks..Ppl need to get over it.i think some are pissed because monks are such a versatile class.. that being said i think it makes us warriors pissed to see some ac35 item go to a monk...if i was in the situation i wouldn't really care.monks deserve there goods just as i do. and my time will come ya know. So its no biggie to get all pissed over someone crying monk....the class i am sick of atm hehe is greedy druids lol porting fer 50pp LOL kiss my a$$ i will just walk. or clerics asking 40pp fer a damn 90% ez. no ty i will waste my time regaining my exp. I don't charge fer my services to make sure you casters stay alive. No matter what any cleric can ***** about and i do here it alot is "Well we waste our mana on you to keep your a$$'s alive."Well here is a situation for ya clerics. I waste my HP to make sure you stay alive. I smile back and say here ya want the mob so bad? As i Stop attackin when he nukes the mob and it turns around grining grimly at him and eats his face. Enjoi u made a new friend....

I don't think I have ever had a cleric in a group I was in charge me for the rez. Or a Druid in a group charge for the port. There using there own time when they are not in your group to give you there services.
RE: repost EVERYONE MUST READ BWHAHAHA

its actually well balanced in the fact that people charge. for 1 do you ever see clerics looting all the time? no, because it takes ALOT out of medding to make pulls go smoother. in 98% of groups the melees are the looters since any good caster will med all the time for most mana to keep the pulls going smooth. and even with split the casters get chump change out of it, 2 gold to your 3pp. 2 do you even have a cleric past lvl 40? do you have any idea how much reagents for symbols cost? next time you ask for a symbol from the group cleric ask how much the reagents are. still think its unfair for them to ask for some money for a rez? druids.... yes, alot of people made them just to make money from porting, and with PoP their numbers seem to have dwindled. and where you came off saying for your group to pay you for your services? do you want the cleric to charge for every heal, every wizzy for each nuke or chanter for haste. yes warriors are the meat shield but just as an important part of the group as all the classes. no cleric, no heal, you cant do anything. warriors dont deal dmg so throw in a monk/rog/wizzy/mage/ranger. in case you havent noticed yet EQ was designed to be very group oriented. grow up and quit complaining about the down side of your class and the up side of others. play your damn class and if you dont like it so much try a different one. simple enough.

I didn't know EQ people had it in them to make a statement without it just turning into bashing everyone else around them, I'm impressed. Everybody does their best for the most part and if the **** hits the fan so be it, if they didn't mean it then let it go and move on. Porters and clerics can get their money for porting/rezzing and that's fine, some people do it every once in a while just to be a nice guy and get the satisfaction of helping someone out. Nothing wrong with charging if you really want to, but it's sad to see people search desparately for a rez/port (CR port maybe just to get body back) for an hour and not find one, then someone comes along and offers 100pp for a port and rez and all hell breaks loose people clawing each other to get to it first. As stated it's a game and none of your items leave EQ when you log out, but your character shines through true regardless of whether it's you fighting that mob or one of your computer generated images.

.it'd be pretty funny to see a level 35 trying to raid in skyshrine.

the 35 came from one of the mobs probably being misplaced as dropping these, or misplaced in level. if you look at the majority of mobs it drops from they're level 45+, meaning you need a group of 50+ to kill them.

regardless, even if your "twink" got these, he'd be much better off selling them to a monk and buying dragonleg breeches, as the previous poster pointed out.

i think if you re-read the post i never said i was going to get them at 35 i said i was lvl 35 there is a BIG difference. the point of my post is as follows: the original post stated that they are only good for a monk, clearly they are not they are good for ANY melee class that was the point i was trying to get across. the fact that i have done a search under pally /legs and they are the best under lvl 45 to obtain should i believe re-enforce this fact, even if they are 45-50 they are still the best you can hope for as a non twinked char.

Spacific location?
# Mar 27 2002 at 4:17 PM Rating: Good
Criking .. can we get back to the Greeves? Seems post after post who should get these and why.

If you're camping them, work it out with your group/guild. It doesn't matter what people say here, especially if your group mates dont even read this.

Now, may I ask a question?
Where exactly do/can these drop? Everybody said "in the bank of SS". Do they ralize SS is devided into three parts? And on top of that, people saying a duo can do these, and I know a duo that's KoS can not get to the back of SS.

Can anybody please clerify as to the location these have been droping at?
Is it in the back of the first part of SS? Across the bridge over the Shrine? Back at the Maze? Past the Maze and in the Central part of SS with lots and lots of stairs and lots and lots of Wyverns ( also a place you can't "duo" too )?
Any confirmation would be of assistance.

Thanks

Oiled Greaves can drop off any of the named Wyverns in the upper levels. That's where our crew got them from.

In regards to who gets what, WTF is the point of coming here to argue? I didn't know our characters can loot items from the Allakhazam site. Someone please explain how I can do this.

If it's a guild raid, the guild will set the rules straight. If you're lucky enough to get a pickup raid, argue it then cuz this isn't even no drop. If it's a raid of friends, and you argue, then you oughta question yourselves about being friends. Period.

It's a hot item among the monk community. Reason being it's one of the best *Tradeable leggings that a monk can wear.
Cause of that, prices hiked as people twink their monk with these or are too lazy to camp for these themselves.

I'm not going to get into a war, like I've seen others here, saying who should get these. I'm just stating facts. I surf the monk forums and these are mentioned all over the place there as leggings to get, if you can afford them.

So many morons play EQ. Just funny that many of you claiming an item is usable for you for this or that reason, when it is clearly more beneficial for other classes, will NEVER see these items due to that attitude. Greed shuts a lot of doors.

ahh, the need before greed player. So honerable so not greedy. Well, if you really belive in need before greed why don't you get rid of your account. After all you don't need it. Truthfully all you need is food, water, and shelter (shelter is debatable). Do you want this leg slot? I belive you do. Does that make you greedy? I don't think so, it is human nature to want. Greed is how much you want, and how far you are willing to go to get it.

Well, I'm a little late on the posting (as the guy who posted about what classes needed did it last year), but first off, you do NOT stick Shm's in the same group as clr's and druids. Shamans depend on AC before mana, depending on the way they want to raise their char. Enchanters do NOT go with the other int casters either, as they use Cha, as do Necros if you raise them in undead/partial undead dungeons; i.e. Kaesora, Kurns, KC, and etc. Second off, Sks depend on Int AFTER Str, unless they are a De (like myself) which uses Str first, sine my base str is 90. Finally, the idiotic "group Cleric" that posted probably doesn't do too much grouping if he/she acts as rejected as he does on the ************************

Guild assistance

Well i have to say that you really dont need guild assistance to get this item. I dual box(play 2 computers at once) and i camp a spot where i kill on average 8 mob's per spawn cycle. If i can do it with just a cleric and monk then it is easily done with an average group of low 50 maybe even lower.

As far as the question of who this should go to. Well its the best tradeable monk legs out there. Not counting the flayed barb of course since those are out of reach of basically everybody at this time. They are also decent rogue legs and int caster legs. Melee can easily get better then these with gladiator chain or kromriff military legs. They dont have as many hp as any of the quest legs so when these dropped for me the first time i gave to a necro because she wanted a nice ac piece and yes ALL classes need ac.

Monks quite often tank and do need high ac and hp. It's very easy for a monk to gain agro and we need to be able to survive that while we feign or stop attacking otherwise you lose out on a lot of damage.
Who should get this item?

If you are going after this item, it is almost certainly with guild assistance. If you are using a guild group or raid to go after it, then you will be going by guild loot rules. If you don't abide by guild loot rules, you will probably be hunting a new guild very soon. Generally, guild loot rules lean strongly towards merit and NBG. This item USUALLY gets awarded to a monk (but not always). Who gets it depends on guild rules and the circumstances at the moment.

Now, if you are guildless or going after this item with a group of strangers for any reason, don't expect NBG. Sometimes you will get a group of strangers willing to do that, but often you will not. I prefer NBG in ALL situations, even where it is to my disadvantage, but I sometimes find myself in a group of strangers who don't want to do that. At that point, I usually decide to go along with their loot rules. On rare occasions, I will find a polite excuse to leave and go to another group or go practice my cooking skill or do a faction quest or something else to kill time. I generally only do this if the people I am grouped with are particularly annoying or greedy or incompetent.

I hate to see flame wars over who should get what. The classic conflict on these boards is usually over whether or not an item is a monk item or not. Often, it is started by an innocuous appraisal of an item that points out its value to a certain class. If someone says, "Wow!!! What a great monk item!!!", you shouldn't get mad. They have not said that it ISN'T a warrior item or a shadow knight item. Saying that something is a great monk item does not mean it is ONLY a monk item. If they say, "This is a monk item, so all you greedy @##@%&ers back off!!! Mine, mine, mine!!!", then feel free to flame them (assuming they aren't joking).

It should be noted that what I have written here may not be applicable on PvP servers. Things are quite a bit more mercenary there.

As some of you might have guessed by now, I play a monk. The vast majority of equipment that a monk uses is ALL/ALL or (at the very least) usable by all melee classes. If you look up an item that is monk only, you will not see any "What a great monk item!" comments unless someone is just making a joke. The same is true of virtually any item out there that is restricted to one class only. The limited selection of equipment that can be used by a monk (regardless of weight) combined with the weight limit placed on monks makes us acutely aware of what items are next on our list of potential upgrades. When a monk discovers a potential upgrade he didn't know about before, he is often ecstatic about it and posts something about the item's monkly potential. Generally, right after he posts something, he is immediately attacked by people who have never played a monk (or at least not a high level one) and don't understand our predicament. They have READ things about monks and THINK they understand, but they don't.

Why is there such venom towards monks? I can think of one reason right off the bat. There is a period of transition for most players when they go from self-centeredness to guild-centeredness. This usually occurs about the time that people become high enough level to go on raids. At this time, the self-centered player goes on his first few raids and sees an item he would love to have get dropped, but it is automatically given to a monk and he isn't even allowed a shot at it. He then learns that even when he makes a higher level, that monks lower than him will still be given priority with the item in question. He is incensed and feels that monks are being given an unfair advantage and carries a chip on his shoulder. Later, when he gets an item BETTER than the one he had to pass on and that is superior to anything a monk could get outside of ToV or Sleeper's Tomb, he may change his attitude towards monks, but not before he has blasted them on numerous message boards.

Another type of person who SOMETIMES carries a grudge against monks is the person who remains guildless. Occasionally, such a person will not appreciate NBG in the same way that a guilded person will and finds the concept of "monk items" to be particularly annoying. Often, because they are not in a guild, this person will have below-par equipment for their class and the "monk items" are actually upgrades for them.

Another type of person who dislikes monks is the kind that has been burned by a monk. Sometimes the monk that got on their bad side was an annoying or vulgar or spiteful person. Usually, though, the monk that made the bad impression was one of the many monk twinks that have become so popular lately. These twinks often level from 1 to 50 in about a month and rarely have the skills needed to play a monk the right way. They will train people in their own party through incompetent pulling, train people at the zone-line, or do any of the other numerous things that an unskilled monk can do to create a collosal mess. That is not to say that all twinked monks are a waste of space. Some monk twinks are well played.

The guild I am in is my second guild. My first guild was a monk-only guild which ended up dissolving when the guild leader and several other members got fed up with EQ and took an extended break from it. We had rules that prevented us from playing twinked monks, getting power-levelled, getting higher level assistance on quests, or buying quest components. The time in this monk-only guild served to provide my guildmates and I with really intense monk skill development. Some of the very best monks on my server came from that guild. To give you an example of what I mean, some of my ex-guildmates (some of whom are in my current guild as well) get invited to raids held by other guilds so they can pull for them. They have their own monks, but ours are better hehe. People still remember our guild, even though it was small and disbanded almost two years ago. That's how good we were.

If you have seen a monk ***** things up repeatedly, odds are good that he is somebody's twink. Do not judge all of us by their poor performance. Also be aware that what appears to be a *****-up may be the result of a skilled monk making the best out of what should have been a HUGE *****-up. That train of four monsters that hits your party on a bad pull and gets you killed might have been much bigger and wiped out half the zone if the monk hadn't known what to do.

There are many places where other classes can pull as well as monks. In some situations, other classes can do a BETTER job of pulling than monks. There are many situations, though, where there is just no substitute for a skilled monk. So don't carry a grudge against monks in general or you might find that you are shooting yourself in the foot when you get into a "monk-required" situation.

RE: Who should get this item?
# Jan 15 2002 at 3:24 AM Rating: Decent
Argfeld I agree with your well put post. Even though I have yet to hit the upper levels of EQ I can understand where you are coming from just due to if someone stops and thinks about this long enough they will be able to understand that even monks will need AC due to damage from pulling and when we agro mobs it can take a short time to FD to get the mob off of you....even my lvl 23 monk has to FD because of agro sometimes so I know when I get to higher levels I will definately need some AC
RE: Who should get this item?
# Oct 18 2001 at 8:42 AM Rating: Default
I'll keep this short.

In Guild mentality, Monks should never be tanking so the AC is better served on a knight class or warrior class. The Main Tank should have as much AC as possible. This being an ultimate truth, Monks should be considered for light items such as these after the true tanks have all been fully equipped with as much AC as possible.
RE: Who should get this item?
# Apr 27 2002 at 1:00 AM Rating: Decent
In a guild mentality it goes to who can best use it for the benefit of the guild first and then for the individual second.

In large raids only the MT (often), assistant MT (when needed), and the puller (If he can't avoid it) should get hit. They are the only toons who really need ac if things go well (hehe, yeah right), with MT (not necessarily war class) as priority. However, there are a number of leg items better for a tank class and few that are a lot better for a monk. I would be surprised if a MT took this over the puller, and if he did he would likely give to puller when he got upgrade.

RE: Who should get this item?
# Oct 20 2001 at 12:34 PM Rating: Good
Tanking isn't the issue. Pulling mobs that hit for 300-500 is. You need AC and hit points to make it back to your group.

need before greed?
# Sep 13 2001 at 8:13 PM Rating: Good
Yeah, it is very, very true that a person can trade an item or sell an item and use it to enchance their person, just like a person in that group could have used the item to begin with and benefitted. But, here's the ringer.. Say you are playing.. hell, who cares. Say you're playing in some high level zone and an item that you've never ever thought would ever drop, does, right before your eyes. And not only is it WAY, WAY rare, and nearly priceless, but YOU are the only one who can use it in the group. Hmm.. Now, you just lost the roll. Later that week you see Joe Smith sell that item for dragon haste, and a pair of uber weapons for his new level 4 ranger twink that won't even get much play for a while until he's nice and fully twinked a few months later.

Now, how do you feel about need before greed? You talk smack now, stating that o well F U I can use the money to buy what I want.. Most things in everquest, in the end game/high level game, are NOT for sale. Tell ya what, I put your name on this little list I keep by my computer, I call it the "to avoid" list. You, are obviously very greedy, and I won't be grouping with you ever.

They also drop 7wis 25mana earrings, so dont be stingy with yer love clerics...

if you are on kael faction get yer *** to skyshrine till you get one of these for your monk... They are basically the best monk greaves you can use till temple of veeshan, plane of mischief. Basically find a nice wyvern spot you can handle and keep killing and killing till you get greaves. Maybe take a few days, but you'll get plenty of other stuff anyway.

To me, AC is a very nice guardian angel on your shoulder, when as a necro, soloing skyfire...when dark gets resisted, and you need to get another dark off, as some mobs can very much run you down(even with jboots) sometimes, you just have to bite the bullet, stop, and cast dark, and take your lumps till it goes off (thanks to that wonderful skill, channeling!=D) what causes that 'tries to hit YOU but misses!' instead of 'A_NastyMob00 hits YOU for 140, repeat, repeat....well, I can tell you...every miss, is another 140+ hps I can convert to mana, to therefore lvl up faster...not to mention, stop me from, umm, dying? Hehehe! Now, I'm not saying take this from another deserving class...but AC, is AC...and helps just about everyone from going home bruised up....or in a coffin;) (jade inlaid, of course...heh heh heh)
I just got one of these babies today.

The item dropped off a one of the many wvyerns in Skyshrine.

Oddly many warriors and others rolled for this item and me (lvl 56 monk) won. In my humble opinion this is a a ranger or monk item. Now I know everyone likes to complain about this but think about it. When you raid somewhere and an item likes this drops it should go to those that need most. Monks can only wear leather. Our highest ac item on most gear is like 10 at best. and most armour pieces are lower. I was using gator scale before I got these. As any good monk knows AC, HP and light weight are what a monk needs most. This item offers all of those things. This is one of the best droppable legs in the game for a monk. I have passed on many items that I could have used but they were crappy to me and I had better. We all play to have fun.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 22 2001 at 1:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) These sound great for a ranger I think. What monk needs mana? Course whoever is in the group can roll in my opinion. You all fight so you all earn a right to get the prize.

i do want to know WHAT the drop off of very
desperately no one has even brought up the
issue...these are so damn rare because no
one knows how to get them and this board
might help a few peeps actually get this nice
greaves...

Now now a warrior should be able to roll on an
SMR because he may be able to trade the 4k for
something and on and on for a very very MUCH more usefull in battle item ( 9int might give 4% more
mana ) ....4k can be used better than the item
iteself...this happens in many many cases
in why lower guk is such a loved place...everyone
gets to roll on fungi...Now if only sebillis were like that... =*( in sebilis a caster would never get a fungi tunic when he may use the 40k
to buy part of a mana robe get amulet of necroptance etc...Theres nothing wrong with what some call greed...money is simply in the same value of items and sometimes much much more

This message was utterly unrelated to the topic. =)

An, on the offhand chance you play on Bristlebane, please warn me if I inadvertantly group with you.
