It took about 4 days to finally get a shawl to drop. I can confirm that on Live servers, only the Neriad Princesses drop the shawl. The princesses are a rare spawn with the maidens, weavers, and mistresses as PHs. On P99, I am not sure if only the princess drops these because it took way less time to get it there than on live. However that is unconfirmed. Video series is a two parter. The first episode is here: <url removed>
Neriad shawl drop

I think I was extremely lucky because I was able to loot this off a neriad princess in under two hours. This happened dec 2013, so yes if you are in doubt, it still does indeed drop.

I'm 72 bard, and I just patrolled the sea tunnel on the east side of the zone ( the tunnel that lead to the epic drop mobs). There are some interesting drops like a conch and a necklace with enduring breath clicky. So keep your eyes open. Just kill everything that has neriad in its name.

For some reason I had this crazy thought that I should get the Neriad Shawl since it's the classic water elemental illusion drop, instead of getting one of the newer ones like Shilliskin. I talked to quite a few other friends and documented my entire journey as proof of how rare this thing is... I saw others post that they had killed hundreds of sea princesses and thought they were exaggerating. Except...they weren't.

I made 200k in raw plat/gems from being here for 3 weeks, completed every achievement in the zone (Swordfishmermaid included, went about 3000-4000 extra don't have exact numbers), saw 15 sargasso spears and seahorse hide belts. All in all I killed 90 sea princesses exactly before I saw this thing. Now on 6/3/2013 I can finally be a water elemental lol.

Fastest way to get sea princesses to spawn is to clear out the front half of the western tunnel... swim north in that tunnel until you get to a bend where the tunnel opens wider (about -400 -200 on map) at that point north of you should be a bunch of mistresses...from there on there are no more maidens and maidens are the PH for the princess. Soon as you kill all the maidens here you can turn around and go back to the start of the neriad tunnel, if you jump onto the land hallway east then you can drop down to another neriad camp. Swim north and kill all the neriads in the water. You can choose to exit this area through south (lots of fish) or north through the land tunnel (lots of sea mammals and sirens, which dont see invis, this is the faster route).

Now if you ARE crazy enough to actually farm this out... then here's some tips for your long journey so you can get more out of this camp and your precious time than just the shawl.

1) Come with really, REALLY empty bags, extraplanar satchels are nice. Don't delete those tradeskill items, you'll get enough mats to level tailoring/smithing to 200 on 5 characters. Handy if you're a boxer and need epic 2.0s.
2) If you have a level 50-67 box, sit it by the WW zoneline and group with it (depending on your level of course). Pull all the neriads in the western tunnel all the way to the north end and kill there. Your box will receive XP. Should be about 4 hours or so before your box hits 70 if you're using lessons/adventure potions.
3) If you're around my level (86) don't use a merc, you can kill them fast enough and sustain yourself well enough that all of the mercs are only going to drain the ONLY advantage this camp has (really good plat income).
4) If you have Rain of Fear you will probably get the Swordfishmermaid achievement while doing this. Most dense location to finish this achievement quickly is the sirens by Felaniel (through western neriad camp). Felaniel herself will not usually aggro so avoid her as she has a high HP pool. You can also get Zookeeper achievement through killing bulthar ulthorks molkors walruses and manatees. Note that the manatee achievement can only be completed in SG as it is the only zone currently with manatees.
5) Collect bulthar trunks and turn them in to Chief Kalan for additional gems, you can turn in 20 items at once now so this is a really easy and fast way for income.
6) If you have not yet completed your Crown of Deceit quest you can zone out to WW and kill Glacier Mastodons for their furs while waiting on respawn.

Items You Shouldn't Delete/Let Rot:
-Emerald Ring (61pp)
-Opal Bracelet (80pp)
-Gloomwater Bow (No-Trade so announce it rotting, pretty sure it's the only snare proc bow in the game)
-Sargasso Spear (30kpp in bazaar)
-Spiked Seahorse Hide Belt (10kpp in bazaar)
-Spined Seahorse Hide Breastplate (2500pp in bazaar)
-Any silks, pelts, or ores are stackable to 100 and can be bartered for 5pp+
-Loams, marrows, & spinneret fluids(vendor trash, but stackable for about 11pp per)
-Lumber Planks, Medicinal Herbs, Natural Spices, Fine Feathers, Tainted Feathers, Binding Powders & Fresh Meats stack up to 100 and can be bartered for 5pp-100pp each. Everything but the powders are edible so stay stocked up on banquet sized meals
-Gems (duh)
-Bulthar Trunks (turn in to Chief Kalan in Cobalt Scar for gems)

Pearl ring, pearl necklace, pearl earring, jade ring are only worth 5-15pp and are not stackable, so generally you don't want to bother with these.
You can also save deepwater inks, but mind you I looted about 1100 and let probably 300 rot before getting this shawl. Inks only stack up to twenty but if you can find a buyer you should be able to sell them for at LEAST 5 plat per making each stack worth a 100pp inventory slot. If you are going to loot deepwater inks then you should come with 2-3 extraplanar satchels...

Good luck and hope this post helps others to make use of this timesink.

Just killed #45+ (most likely more than that) "a neriad sea princess". No shawl.

Princesses seem to spawn about once every two or three clears. Droprate according to all the information I have read is as low as 2% and as high as 15%...

Averaging the two, I'll put the droprate at a supposed 8%. If that is the case, I should've had AT LEAST two drop for me so far.

Lame camp, very lame camp.

I would recommend finding a ranger friend and camping the Shiliskin Trickster Mask or something else like that... Because although the droprate seems much better, the spawnrate is absolutely terrible, and on top of that, the droprate appears to be hovering at a very low percent.

If anyone has suggestions/info for more princesses to spawn... or if people know that the damn thing still drops, let me know. Thanks!

My post right below this one explains my experience with it. Someone else's post tells you how to camp it if you didn't already know (this is how I did it)
"The best way i found to camp this was to just start at the beginning of the tunnel where they neriads are and just kill everything that aggroed until i got to the end. My bard was on /follow the whole time and we both had EB items on. By the time i killed the last neriad i just swam back the the front end and the next one had popped. My tracking was always up so i knew when they were all dead. So just keep running the loop and killing them all and you will get it."

This guy also gives good instruction on his post:

I got it back in march 2010, so it def is still dropping, but like other people have posted, you will be camping this for 2 days 8 hours+ per day at least, if you're lucky.

Also, be sure to kill ALL the neriad chicks on that one track. They all have a chance to drop it, and you might also get a snare weap worth some good plat (i got two).

according to several other posts, only the sea princess has a chance to drop it. and not all neriads can spawn sea princesses either.

this post was almost a year ago. wish i could remember which dropped it. alla says they all drop it. it's likely that someone had it drop for each of those neriads at one time. but if you're correct, one still would want to kill all the neriads, unless that person knows which will spawn a princess, and which won't.

edit: references to shawl drops in comments on the mob pages all date around 2002-2003, only the neriad princess has more recent drops of the shawl. a sg revamp may have changed it to princess only.

This was one of the longest illusion camps i have done. i camped it for about 9 hours a day for about 3.5 days.
i'd suggest if you start this, dont devote your time to anything BUT this camp... cause if you start each day and give up after 2-3 hours... you're going to be camping this place for over a week or more.
Find something else to do while you're waiting on tunnel to respawn, like watch tv.
On the upside, two sargasso spears dropped for me in this time (snare weap):

Well I can certainly attest to the rarity of this item still. I've been clearing this tunnel for nearly 2 days now. I'd estimate that I've seen probably a few dozen princess spawns. No drops so far.

took me about 1.5 hours to get this - dropped off a neriad sea princess. I killed alot more maidens than sea princesses - but there was a fair few princesses too - and they summon which is actually really annoying when ur underwater..

Just got this today. I experienced a spawn rate of about one princess for every 20 or so maiden place holders. I didnt keep exact count, but I estimate I had to kill about 200 or so maidens to get enough princesses for this to drop. Spawn timer is 28 minutes for the maidens btw.

Dropped 3/31/2006, got very lucky and got it to drop on my second princess, which spawned on the second clearing of the neriads underwater below the Mistress' temple.
Does it still drop?

RE: Does it still drop?

Yes the Neriad Princess still drops the illusion shawl. (FYI shes the only mob that does now.) Shes not a tuff mob at all, its just getting her spawned and then getting the drop. The shawl is a rare drop off a uncommon spawn. I would say that off and on over the months, she spawns about 2% to 5% of the time. So you will need to kill 20-50 maidens to get her to spawn. Then the drop rate on the shawl is another 2% - 5% so 20-50 kills of the princess should get you a shawl on the average.

If you pick the neriad camp underwater under the temple of Mistress Latazura as your spot (best neriad spot in my opinion) then pull the 4 on the sides underwater, the 2 roamers, and the 2 in the first room down under the middle, then the one up north ways; that will make 9 spawns you are working. Do this for 3-6 repops and on average you will see one princess. Great, now 20-50 more of that and you should on average have a shawl!

A lot of work but you can increase your odds by pulling mobs from up farther north in that underwater tunnel. 2 more spawn around the next corner but now you are into heavier hitting mobs that sometimes summon including the Weaver PH's. After the 2 there is 1 more spawn in the tunnel, 1 more roamer, and a 4-spawn up ahead of sirens that are all blue to 70. Not sure if they are a PH for a princess as I never tested them thoroughly.

Took about 8-9 hours of camping the maidens under the siren's castle in the south east of zone. Dropped off of the 10th sea princess I killed.

Dropped today 11-7-05 on Quellious.

After the first clear got 2 princesses to spawn. Dropped at the first neriad spawn in tunnel.
Still dropping?

Not a maiden in zone. I heard the "a neriad maiden" were the PH's for the sea princessess. And the princesses were supposed to drop the shawl. But with no PH's to kill it shard to get a SP to spawn. Tons of mistresses tho. been killing the for 2 hours...the ones under the 1.5 mobs. Wonder if i am wasting my time lol....dammit...I knew I should have came here when I first read about this 3 years ago. Thats what I get for being lazy.
