A little suggestion...
# Nov 26 2002 at 7:38 AM Rating: Decent
Anyone playing a rogue with decent Hide and sneak.... Get a SoW and the items and take a walk there... (even under 10th level). I took my rogue there at 7th and now she has this pretty mask. and even if you do not have the items mammoth meat is easily obtainable in Everfrost people will even give it to you or buy from a vendor cheap. the cougarskin is no drop so alot of players will let it rot on a corpse.. just send a tell in the area. unhide loot and hide again... this quest is so easy to do! Good Luck! Just be sure to take a look around you before handing the items in for wandering monsters the guards won't kill them for you.

Actually, HQ Cougar skins are NOT no-drop. They're also a component in the Holly Longtail PoK quest that results in a REALLY nice ring (any priest/caster/hybrid should get one). They're sometimes available for purchase from the pirate vendors near the cougars

Ack! No Beastlord of any race can wear this mask! I was disheartened to discover, upon completion of the quest, that this mask is unusable by Beastlord's. I was looking forward to upgrading from the Iskar mask that I wear now. I cannot see the reason for this, because Beasties are a leather wearing class. I would have to agree with the previous post that it may be an oversight (as Verant has done a poor job of planning the Beastlord class...IMO)

i did this quest with my Vah Shir Beastlord and sorry to say but they can not equip this item. i was really looking forward to a decent face item cause my ranger currently wears one and its great. so after getting all the necessary items i gave them to my beastlord and off he went. Vah Shir con threatenily to cougars so good time to pratice there swimming skills. turned itmes in got mask and then got that nice message that i could not wear. its in the bank so i am hoping someday to wear.

Odd. Is it not usable by vah shir, by beastlords, or by either? Seems that this is an oversight, since it's usable by monks, druids and barbarians.

More accurately its usable by Shaman, Bard, Monk, War .... All of Which a Vah Shir can be. Even including the Barbarian, a Large race....

Have any of you who say there are better masks out there looked to see what it takes to get a mask with 6AC or better?!

I could solo mammoth calves in Everfrost at level 12, theres your 2 mammoth meat. Also at level 12, and even as low as level 5, I've walked from Freeport to N Ro to the shuttle/boat to Iceclad pirate vendors and on to Ergriz with NO sow, NO invis, NO bodyguard players; just stay on the shoreline unless you are near ergriz or the pirates. The pelt needed is a HIGH QUALITY cougarskin, about 6gp at the pirate vendors, and it is tradeable, the MEDIUM QUALITY is the NODROP one, but you don't need one of those to get a mask.

Now you can see how easy the quest is but you still don't think it's worth it?
-Wis casters if you can't afford a +wis mask, or simply want to carry around AC gear.
-Monks did we mention 1.0 wt?
-tanks show me where you can get better than a 6AC mask with 10hp, 2dex, 2agi for anything close to 6gp?
-PvP server players, I have two words for you: NO DROP

'nuff said, if you still don't like it don't get one :)

A monk in my guild almost has a full suit of this stuff, Macel, and it's appropriately rated 45th-50th armor for monks. He's 39th and has been getting this armor since 34th. He's worked hard and done a good job, this armor is great.

I'm a lvl 17 rogue and I'm about to head off on this quest! Let the powers of sneak/hide be with me as I head off to Velious....EF first, those mammoth meats will work fine. Right now I am usin a SP mask, the stupid PoS, and this should be quite a nice upgrade. I'M OFF! WISH ME LUCK!
RE: I'm gonna do it!
# Nov 23 2001 at 7:47 PM Rating: Default
SP Mask is not THAT bad if you are a race without infravision, because it acts as a lightsource. Sure, the stats aren't great, but the stats aren't exactly wonderful on the cougarskin mask anyway. Generally, it's good for a lot lower level character than would be able to complete the quest the way they intended for it to be completed. I personally don't see any benefit for a druid with this mask, unless you already have a WIS of 200 without a WIS face.

Gonna post at the risk of being flamed. A lot of new items act as light stones, but there is different kinds of light (color) and radius. The SP mask seems to sort of augment the sight of the player. Its hard to explain but everything is bathed in a white light, I dont think its a radius light...if it is, its huge! Sensi reshi eyes are a very nice white light, large radius too. i know, who cares....

Entirely possible. Just be careful to avoid the snow cougars and snow dervishes on the island. This is a nice mask for anyone.

And to answer the question many people ask, yes, the meat that drops off mammoths in Everfrost works just as well as mammoth meat from Eastern Wastes. I got one meat from a mammoth in Easter Wastes while my guild was clearing the Ryogorr fort, and one off a wooly mammoth in Everfrost. They stack, and I got the mask when I gave them to Ergrez. And don't worry if he won't respond to your hails, he'll still give you the mask. Of course, make sure the meats in two separate slots.

Nice mask! In my opinion, it's the best item you can get from him. And the only one that's really monk friendly.

# Jul 11 2001 at 9:52 PM Rating: Good
You can get this mask at Level 17,what I proved today.

The hardest part for me was not getting the HQ Cougar Skin (I bought it from the pirate shops) or the mammoth meats (They are very easily to get from mammoth calfs in Everfrost). The hardest part wasn't the trip to Ergrez, because I saw no monster and wandered safe at the seasides of iceclad ocean.

The hardest part was the journey from Freeport to Everfrost and back. I walked the distance by foot and was lucky to get a bind at Qeynos. But I died numerous times and lost 30+ percent of exp on the trip.

But the mask is worth it :-)

Good journey to all of you

A much safer way to journey from freeport to everfrost is to take the boat to butcherblock (17 minutes long!), walk to the spires in Greater Faydark, pass through nexus to antonica spires in North Karana, then walk along the south wall of the zone until you get to the qeynos hills zone. You bypass east karana, highpass, the commonlands and some other zones. I've never died going this route.
Doh!

Ok so this mask is better than a leering mask (which is what i have now at 37)? And all you need is a HQ cougar pelt and 2 mammoth meats? I can't even remember how many of each of these i have simply destroyed. I've really got to pay more attention to the quests available.
Large races
# Jun 05 2001 at 1:36 PM Rating: Default
Don't take this as complaining, i'm just curious. Why are the large races excluded from so many items and there are so few large race only ones?
RE: Large races
# Aug 31 2001 at 8:00 AM Rating: Default
I agree totally. Being a Troll, can's use Hero Bracers, some other shackles neither, and no 6+ ac masks either till those high level dragons and stuff. Btw yes high str and sta, but low dex agi int wis and cha. (cha makes more of a difference then it seems btw you make good monney by selling and buying stuff with high cha)
sure we get regen (I'm a troll) but no hide like Dark elves, and Iksar got regen also, and an ac bonus. + there are several places you need shrink in so all by all we have enough down sides. No need to nerf us on items also.

Guess is that u compensate with other type ( STR, AC, STA, DEX...) bonuses?

Even things out? Who knows, that math is way beyond me..........

it is unfortunate that large and small do not have the number of items available, as the largest portion of population-medium... bell curve... blah blah....

Yeah, I have to agree the large races especially get the shaft on equipment. I first figured this was to balance out their other attributes (most str). Initially I regarded large races as 'advanced' - You can't run around just killing stuff and hoping for the occasional good drop for your class/race. You have to plan and research the quests to get decent equipment. Still, I've seen ogres in high level guilds and in some cases the difference in strength between them and the pallys is 20 points. Is 20 points worth all the disadvantages to these characters? I wouldn't recommend playing one expect with a group.

I'm a gnome. I really never have had a problem with finding stuff.....yet. I am only lvl 17, maybe i'll run into problems later, but as of now, I'm doin good. I have seen many items on auction that I would have liked to get, but was a little dissapointed to find out that they were large races only. I think the only large race that would have problems getting fitting items would be Barbarians. Just being that they are surrounded by medium sized people. Trolls and Ogres have each other....sniffle....and the poor barbarians are disliked...sniffle...by them.....IT'S SUCH A TRAGEDY!!!!
18 Warrior can do
# Jun 01 2001 at 9:26 AM Rating: Decent
I just want to inform you that I finished both the cougarskin mask and the direwolf fur cloak wiht a 18 warrior, without invis. I wouldn't suggest it unless you have some time to wait, because besides the mammoths and rhino's everything else aggro's on you. I bought the skins, and meats from either vendors in iceclad or from the generous people on Torvonnilous server. The only problem came when trying to get the skinning rocks from EW. The ones that i found or was given loc for was around a heavily populated with giants, and griffins so just watch your step. But other than that it's very easy to get to Ergrez Shortpaw since i wasn't kos to give the materials. So for all you indoubt if it can be done, just remember anything can be done, just depends on how much time you actually want to put into it.

Dear Kirishkon Shortrader:
This is a heartfelt thanks to you and all like you in the game. I recently took my young Erudite Wizard (11) on the Staff of the Wheel Quest. I simply couldn't resist the temptation of a +10int primary item without me even having to twink him. What I found were many people who were willing to help me out, whether it be by TPort/SoWolf/Inv vs Undead spells; by taking time to escort me places that I had never been to; and one kind 52 Vicar who was willing to pull the AH for me, losing half her health, so I could obtain the final object for my quest. She even sent me the first tell, offering to rez my poor, tired, self after the single time I died (in LGuk) and had made it all the way from SQeynos to UGuk. People like them, and yourself, are not thanked enough in game, so I would like to extend my personal gratitude to everyone who has helped the brave who attempt to "quest over their heads", so to speak. I see it as my duty to help those who are honestly trying to help themselves, who are not out there "begging" highers for money/loot, and who have taken the time to research an item or quest that they have interest in. Thank you all,

I can't speak for other servers but on my server (Vazaelle) questing seems to be forgotten. Nobody ever does them any more! I recently joined forces with a young bard (level 35) who was in a near full suit of Lambent armor. He was complaining that he didn't have enough money to buy the rest. I asked him why he didn't just quest for it and he laughed at me asking if I were insane. Now at the time I was a 32 rogue and had done almost all of the Lambent armor quests for both fun and profit (I am a rogue after all!) and the quests really weren't all that hard! But back to my point...I'm glad to see questing isn't dead! I would like to remind anybody who reads this that the game is called EverQuest not EverLoot. Quests make the game both fun and interesting! I love going out of my way to help someone with a quest! You never know what kind of adventures you may have!

Be safe my friends.

Mammoth meat can be obtained as low as level 8 in a group killing mammoth calves in Everfrost or occasionally found on vendors in Everfrost or Halas. The High Quality Cougarskins can be found at the gnome pirate vendors just up from the docks as they are almost always in stock from players selling them. I imagine that some items may be a little harder to obtain on PvP servers but I was able to get mammoth meat in Everfrost when I was there and the cougar skin off the pirate vendors. I took the meat out of the bank when I was in Freeport, caught the boat to Velious, bought a skin off the pirates and walked to the gnolls without aggroing anything at level 12. Hand the 2 meats, unstacked, and the pelt to the gnoll named E something with a last name and voila! Nice mast for the AC and stats and weight, especially if you are untwinked or are tired of a plain old banded/bronze/FP mask.

Now the wolf fur cloak is a different story altogether but with rogue sneak/hide the skinning stones are easy and a little politeness and a lot of patience helped to obtain the medium quality dire wolf fur for free from a kind druid. Yea the quests aren't all that hot for the 50+ crowd but I know I love having a mask with good AC and good stats and a 7 AC, 5 str cloak for free is no laughing matter at level 20 when I got mine.

Couldnt get the gnoll to talk to me, Gave him the stuff... and Bingo.... .

I have a monk on Rallos zek, so this item is great for pvp! Basically, because it has some nice stats, and it is no drop.

You can pick up some mammoth meat from mammoth calfs in everfrost. I believe they are around level 15. With a nice group, you could pick up two mammoth meats around level 12. As soon as I ge the mammoth meats, I am making my way to Velious.

I should not have to worry about pkers to much, seeing how everyone in Velious should be about 20 levels higher then me, heh.

Once completed, I have my self a nice little NO DROP mask

It's not hard to get to the gnolls without getting spotted. This is entirely reasonable to do at a lower level. Hardest part is the pelt, and if you can find one at the igloos or have someone give it to you you're all set.

If I have a better mask that I normally wear, and die, it's nice to have a set of soe basic armor to offer that little bit of extra protection as opposed to running through the world totally naked. That blue critter that you handled with ease fully equipped, can pose a problem when you are naked. That's why I keep a set of good armour and weapons in the bank, since I'm usually bound near one. I thought it was a good idea!

Still, my original question has not been answered.

Aside from the mask as a reward, do you get any XP by doing this quest?

I see no reason why a 20th level ranger could not get this mask. No, you couldn't actually kill the required things (at least no without a very strong group for your level), but everything is quite common.

You could probably buy the cougar skin from the merchants at the gnome outpost. Personally, when I was hunting there I destroyed dozens of HQ skins, so you could easily talk someone out of one.

Same for the mammoth meat. Go into EW and /auc that you'll pay 5-10pp for 2 mammoth meats. I'm sure someone will hook you up.

I don't know if I would suggest this for anyone that can't cast invisibility though. Every cougar/wolf/snow dervish will aggro on you, and at level 20 you'll die quickly. However, nothing in iceclad see's through invis, neither do any of the normal animals or orcs in EW (casters might, but they don't wander)

Personally, I'm planning on taking my 20th lvl ranger there to get him one as well.

You don't need invis at all if you're careful. Just hug the shoreline the whole way from the dock to the gnolls, and you shouldn't have anything agro on you. My RL brother bought the meat in Halas, bought the cougarskin in Iceclad, and got to Ergrez and back with no problem at all. He was only a level 8 bard!

As a warrior I would no doubt love to have this. I think I will print out the quest. Have to love that ac in the face slot. You get some stats too.
Not bad at all.
