Worthless and needed to be updated or fabled

This should have been either modified to or a fabled version should have been added. Due to the delay and the plain fact the casters suck at melee anyways this thing is worthless.
Here is what I think this item "SHOULD" look like:

Skill: 2H Blunt Atk Delay: 30
DMG: 15 Dmg Bonus: 81
DEX: +5 CHA: +10 INT: +25 HP: +125 MANA: +125
Effect: Specter Lifetap (Combat, Casting Time: Instant) at Level 45
WT: 5.0 Size: MEDIUM
Slot 1, Type 4 (Weapon: General)

Now before you all flame me yes this is not what the item really is. Yes the delay and damage is a better ratio and if you think this will make casters have too good of an item you are way off. The INT, HP, and MANA are high simply because this takes up your primary and secondary since it's a two hander. No one will bother equipping an item like this without at least decent stats. Also technically getting the keys and moving all the way up to her (by yourself and let us assume at a lower level)... if you kill her you deserve a decent reward like this. -Peace.

Sorry to break it to you guys but there's 2 main things to look at here, 1 anyone who can use this staff's weapon skills cap at 110 my wizard has a 50/43 shovel and i hit for 80 with it about once every 10 minutes, it's banked because i don't have the heart to destroy it, 2 while yes it is true that you can proc a weapon that you can barely hit with, we're talking about a 12/52 dmg/dly you swing every 5.2 seconds byw the time you swing this 10 times, and procced once if you where LUCKY you could have been medding for almost a minute... i can go from 0 mana to more than enough for a 1645dmg nuke in less than that..... yes a little dmg beats no dmg but if you sat your *** down and medded for a nuke instead of meleeing you wouldn't exactly be doing no dmg ;-)
# Apr 21 2007 at 9:34 AM Rating: Decent
Once again, I must say that how often you proc is based on your dex and proc mods (combat effects and the actual proc mod on weapon/effect). How many times you swing has NOTHING to do with it. Nothing. If your dex and your proc mods say that you will proc 3 times per minute, then you will proc, on average, 3 times per minute. Period.

Oh, and I do realize that this post is about 4 years old. Doesn't change the fact that that's not how procs work.

alot of peopel say this is great for when ur cleric is oom or for when ur oom and u pull this out and its great because its axtra dmg. but for all the classes that can use this u shouldn't be tankin while ur oom. and if ur cleric is oom then u have a problem. IMO if ur not casting u should be medding simple as that. i can see lower lv's using sumtin like this. but by the time u can get this staff u shouldn't be tankin. its just common sense. dont mean to flame anybody i really didn't read all the posts but just wanted ot put in my 2cp. an oom caster is a useless caster.

Proc Level?
# Mar 04 2003 at 4:22 AM Rating: Decent
Anybody have any idea what level this staff procs?

I happened to have my necro nearby when the staff dropped and looted it; but it doesn't proc at level 36.

Thanks for the info ahead of time!

Combine with a manastone.
# Jan 14 2003 at 9:27 AM Rating: Decent
61pt lifetap makes me think automatically of a 'Manastone' with it's 60pt life to 20m conversion. If you were a caster and 'had' a manastone, this would be a good combination and it would allow you to 'mix' it up with the rest of the melee. This would also be good with a 'Manarobe' too, as it is the same as a stone but can be used anywhere.
When would this be used?
# Aug 14 2002 at 9:04 AM Rating: Default
Lets face it: 2H blunt will never be better than 1H blunt. However, one good scenario for this weapon's use would be farming. Casters seem to perenially be oom when trying to get the Ancient Cyclops in S Ro to spawn for example. So this little life tap spell would enable you to swing away continously, and really feel a part of the action for a change.

Then it would be good for the obvious other reasons: It's a lore item, so it's used in a quest. You could give it to a level 20 guildie who tagged along, and it's good for ceremonies.
RE: When would this be used?
# Dec 05 2002 at 11:57 PM Rating: Excellent
Lore does not mean it is used in a quest. Lore adds a tag to the item that you can see with identify, usefull in quests. But lore also makes it impossible to have more than one. So lore tag does not automaticly mean quest.

it's no drop, so you couldn't give it to a level 20 guildie, hehe. I agree though, 2hb will not be as good as 1hb - at least for as far ahead as i can see. *shrug* too bad, i always thought of wizards (casters) as the kind to wield a really slick 2h staff
RE: When would this be used?
# Sep 22 2002 at 10:29 AM Rating: Default
I agree about the 2HB comment. Most every fantasy book you read, or movie has a wizard with a 2HB staff. I never understood why Verant put out crappy staves like that for the casters...kinda takes away the proper flavor, because we all know that 99% of us are gonna grab two of the cool (and stat heavy) 1 handed anything over a 2HB with only half of the stats and abilities. Yes, I know, it's not a crappy staff for a 20th level toon, but there are not many 20th levels that could survive upstairs to be able to loot something like this.
She is a pain
# Jul 04 2002 at 8:01 AM Rating: Default
My guild just made a group last night and went after this enchanter/necro. We killed her twice but beware, when she has the staff she becomes almost twice as difficult then without. So her having the staff for you to loot is a blessing and acurse because you may not be able to kill her when she has that staff.
hardly worth the meleeing..

How to see if Tserinna will drop it

When we fought Tserrina when she had this staff, she was meleeing in the same manner that people do when using a 2hb staff. In other words, she wasn't forward punching with one hand, but using both her hands in a forward/down motion. Oddly enough, you can't literally see the staff when fighting her, just the 2hb motion. That's how you'll know she has it in her loot table. Easy fight, but it 'can' get ugly if she gates and starts summoning.

I can't say much for the staff since I'm not a caster (I don't think the only caster present, a necro, planned on using this full-time though), I mean at face value it seems pretty nice, but I can tell you it looks really good and sinister (sarnak skull on top of a clear grey shaft, like the Xalgoz staff).

if it didnt take up pri AND sec slot this would be beyond good.
but im sorry, for the occupation of 2 slots which could undoubtedly be equiped with 2 seperate items far better than this, the stats arent that nice when that is considered.

this is a great weapon. first, the proc is similar to my level 29 lifetap spell. you dont neccessarily need to go attack something for exp to get the benefit of this proc. go kill a flippin wolf and your life meter will rise. plus, the 10int bonus is great for a necro, it's the same as my stein that i have been holding forever and a day, plus this staff is a weapon, woot! and for the sake it being a 2hb, the loss of int bonus item in your other hand can well be matched by another int item somewhere else on your person. later, going to get one.

RE: this really isnt all that nice...

Not only is it great at social events - think of this as your new Chanties healing device. The +6 CHA and +10 INT IS inviting, but yet you can have TWO items in your hands that give you more - especially at THIS level.
I hope to get this item and use it when I am in DIRE need of some health. Saves on cleric mana even though I have clarity.

This is not only the necro's dream weapon, it's great for any class. When you have a bunch of greenies swarming you somewhere, and you can't get off a lifetap because of the neverending "A such-and-such hits you for 2 points of damage". You can whip out this staff and melee the bastards to death. Would I EVER EVER EVER use it outside of that kind of situation? No. However, with Vamp Curse, root, VoS, staff of wriething, and banshee aura I can melee low blues without loosing more than a bub of mana. Simply great for necro-solo-dungeon crawling. I got a BCR in CC at level 35 with this tactic. about 5-10 second of downtime per kill.

If you don't have one, or use one, then don't tell everyone how bad it is. Use it. Understand it's power. Understandably, the caps on caster melee are really low. Unless you are destroying a lowlevel dungeon, this won't be used a lot.

This staff and the real story

A few choices quotes:

"No respectable caster will melee enough to make this proc anyway, so the effect is pretty much useless. Still, it is a great stat increasing staff"

"Anyone who gets this staff and is still planning to use it for Melee is a fool... ;-) "

"on the other hand, not many high level Enchanters melee ... "

"The proc also sucks, any proc requires a caster to melee is not good at all."

I have to wonder how many of the posters actually have an enchanter above 20. There is a spell line enchanters have called the color line, color flux, shift, slant, etc... At low levels most enchanters discount this line, "It buys me a few seconds while the meleers taunt it off of me"
At high levels enchanters finally realize the absolute power of this line. Not only does it interrupt casters, but it also stuns mobs for several seconds on end, combine this with chaining, and you can indefinitely stun a mob.

For a bubble of mana I can color flux a mob so much that the damage the meleers take can barely be seen on the health bar.

Color chaining requires you to be near melee range... Why would you sit at melee range and not melee? Even with my rod of insidious glamor I can often dish out almost 150-200 damage on a mob. Mind you, that's essentially free damage since I'm already at melee range anyway to color flux.

Such is the power of the color line that the other evening I was sitting in the DLs, not a priestly type to be found, so I teamed up with two warriors both with regen items (Both had iksar breastplates I believe), and a necro. The necro chain fed me mana in lich form, and the meleers had their regen breastplates on. With this combo there was absolutely no downtime in the slightest, such is the power of the color line that even the minimal regen afforded by the iksar breastplate covers the damage acquired during an enchanter color lining. In fact, the only time we had to stop was when I got low on hitpoints and the necro had to patch me up a bit.

This staff is a dream come true for the wise enchanter. Color chaining is an absolute must at higher levels. The lifetap not only helps you dish out more damage, but also helps cover the damage you would take being at melee range and thus saving your clerics/priests some much neeeded mana.

I won't even go into places like the second floor of hate where most enchanters are meleeing or any of the other countless zones and mobs where your spells would be totally resisted every time you cast them.

# Jun 12 2001 at 12:01 PM Rating: Default
Once you have maxed your int it is much better to use cone of the mystics and book of oblus, that gives so much more mana than this crappy staff. The proc also sucks, any proc requires a caster to melee is not good at all.
RE: not very good
# Dec 05 2001 at 8:12 AM Rating: Default
Imagine, 66% haste (which effectively takes the delay of this weapon to 17.3) and a 100 point Dex buff. I dunno about you, but rogues rarely get a weapon below a 17 delay (One of the best I know of is 8 17 locustlure). If you say this weapon is not very good, you may want to rethink that. I see this weapon being nerfed.

FYI, haste isn't calculated that way. Otherwise, how could you have over 100% haste? I can't remember how it goes, and I'm suprised someone hasn't pointed this out before, but I think it based on the Damage/Delay ratio, not the delay. Might try one of those monk sites/message boards for the facts.

As for the item itself, it is a nerf in itself with the standard delay. If you manage to hit enough with 52 delay without haste (in the n00b zones like people suggest, as a non-enchanter) then you should consider yourself lucky, especially since you will probably have low dexterity (which I hear can help channeling) because all of your equipment has INT on it (I have an Ogre Shaman with all stats in the green, except CHA because of my Shield of Falsehood by 2 points.) Some classes need more stats than others (eg. druids, clerics) but you should never neglect stats (eg. necros have some STA/HP items for more mana to feed off of, any class have some spare CHA gear for selling those Velious gems to merchants.)
RE: not very good
# Mar 07 2002 at 12:08 PM Rating: Decent
Some Sta/Hp does not even begin to describe what necros need in terms of Hp. I am lvl 44 and without equipment/buffs I think I have about 650hp, I just managed to get my hp over 1000 self buffed. (Add diamondskin and I can tank 1400+ dmg). Hp is king for necros for several reasons. First and foremost, the more hp you have, the more of it you can lich and the more mana you will have. Second, you can pact more. I team up with a paladin to fight undead and between our undead dds, his anti-undead proc spell, my pet, slowing the critter 50%, his healing, and my pact spell we are unstoppable.

Remember, if you get below 40% health your agro hugely increases. That is when casters get killed in my experience. They dip below 40 and you cannot get the mob off of them. This happened to me recently on a Tserrina raid. I was taken to 40% by a bat that refused to be mezzed. I had not touched Tserrina yet. She summoned me and killed me. More hp simply gives you more room to work with befor you get to this point.

THe most clear evidence of the usefullness of hp to me is the number of times that I have feigned death with less than 100 hp.
no point

This staff is for the most part pointless to use, if you are lvl 45 and a pure caster tell me one time you would run up to anything that you would wanna kill for exp, i dont see much of a point to it unless you wanna die when the thing quad hits ya for 100s of dmg =)

I'm a 50 mage and I love this staff. It has great stats (the 15hp is nice and the 55 mana is compliments my robe of the kedge perfectly) and a sweet look (lots of compliments on looks with kedge robe, geb's, and this). The dr/pr are great for trak. (throw on a robe of ishva and poison resist and the poison dragons are a lot easier). means jack to anyone over lvl 45...resists and mana (and sometimes hp) are big things
# Mar 04 2001 at 9:08 PM Rating: Default
Wow, I can't believe how many people say this is worthless. I am a 56 necro with over 200 int and this is Great. The 55 mana is what appeals to me most and I'm tired of carrying a stupid cup around that I've had since level 12. I got mine today and I could not be happier.

Indeed. I maxed my Int out recently. It's an odd experience: Suddenly, everything in the game with only INT on it is utterly useless.

Currently wielding a harvester and stien, this thing would be quite an upgrade for me.

I love this staff..not for the stats, but because I worked so hard to get up to that 7th floor, and I FINALLY robbed Tserrina of one of her own personal items. I dont equip it when I am fighting but when I am running around NOT fighting you better believe I am holding it, and VERY proud to say that I killed her, and this is her staff. Just makes me feel proud I guess, I like looting no drop stuff. I mean yeah, it'll never proc for me, and yeah my stein's give me better stats, but this baby I earned myself, and thats what I personally like about it =).

I agree totally, Last night was my glory moment in this tower, I have a well balanced grp that has been working to the top floor. We all did research and palnned the entire operation from the start of how were going toget inside and take the spawn. My first point is this, I carry the Stien and the Staff of Wheel, pretty standard gear for the wizard, I do not Melee so the 10/100 dam/del on the staff is not of concern to me, the int is. Would be a lair to say other wise. But as for this staff, I weild it for the pure fact of It looks great, and I KILLED HER. Point blank, it is easy to say "yeah I bought 2 non-lore Centi LS blah, blah, blah. All of us can make money to BUY whatever we want but there a few of us that like to bask in the glory of actually accomplishing something other farming to gain loot for PP. So those of you who like to buy everything, plz DO NOT play a caster, for much of our good quality gear is NO DROP and you must fight to get it. Lastly if you are ever on Karana Server and I am not in battle, plz give me shout, I will let you see what it looks like if you have not seen it.

Not sold on this staff yet. If you are lower level, the 55 mana is GREAT. But at higher levels the Stein of Moggok (INT 10) and Crude Stein / Incadescent Wand (WIS > 6) will give you better overall CHA/INT. I guess the tie breaker would be that proc ... on the other hand, not many high level Enchanters melee ... we would get our butts handed to us first by the mob, then by the group members who depends on us to stay alive.
RE: Mystwalker
# Mar 01 2001 at 5:06 PM Rating: Decent
True and not true... at lower levels, mana items yeild more mana than int or wis, but at 201 and higher int, you stop getting extra mana anyways... so at high levels people start ogling the mana items again... if a lucky enchanter hd unheld items enough to be 190 int and decent charisma, then this would have more benefit than the steins (minus some cha and sta and 12 vs disease)... even though i botched my stats by not putting enough points into cha and int, with mediocre gear I still reach as high as 199 int or as high as 189 cha, and can balance the two with buffs at 174 each, so as my plane raids get more frequent and I get to take a whack at peeps like Velketor or Tserrina here, I should be looking for mana over int items before too long myself.
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 05 2001 at 8:17 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I dunno about the mana thing.
