The Threesome...
# Oct 03 2002 at 7:25 PM Rating: Good
The three Giants pop somewhere around Kael entrance and walk to the genoid cave entrance closest to Skyshrine.

We figured this out when one of our party was headed to Kael from the Dragon ring and bumped into them. The timing could have been better. I followed our tracker/Druid (bring a ranger for the traking range because we got turned around :p ) and pulled on acolyte to our group at the genoid entrance, by the time that fight was done the other two were getting there, so I pulled the blood priest around and let him cast on me. Having 150+ MR helped him waist time and mana....

Needless to say we got all the medalions and I now have a Phenocryst Focus to match the look of my Drachind Thyxl. ("No I can't TL you I am a monk." "But you're a Gnome....")
PoG faction?
# Sep 12 2002 at 5:55 AM Rating: Decent
Exactly how did your PoG faction get fixed? We too trashed our PoG faction, and have fixed all except for the Protectors of Growth faction. This one doesn't appear fixable.

Broken???
# Jul 22 2002 at 12:55 AM Rating: Default
I've been doing this quest off and on for the past year (don't ask why but I am always starting quests and then forget I'm doing them).

Well, I had the Altered Velium Focus, and my three heavy metals and got my friends together and traipsed on over to WL... I handed Phenocryst the Altered Focus, however, nothing happened. I did not get the Elbaite focus back and it did not trigger the giants. I remember this quest was broke right after Luclin came out, but JESUS, it's been 7 months now!

On a side note, I did what the GM told me and emailed a GM from the EQ site... the Altered Focus was back in my inventory. I did note to the GM that my faction, which had gone from indifferent to amiable on the CC Geonid turn in to get the Altered focus, had gone back to indifferent. And... for some reason going to PoG and trashing my Tunare faction just takes a patch to clear before I can visit Felwithe again.
RE: Broken???
# Aug 28 2002 at 7:23 PM Rating: Default
Interesting. My guess is it's not the quest that's broken, it's you. Or more accurately, your character file. Your faction table would appear to have been set to "read-only" at some point in the past, so as long as the server stays up, your factions adjust, but as soon as they are re-read from disk (after a server down event), they are back where they where when they got stuck.

Could be a blessing or a curse.
Phenocryst Graphic
# Jul 16 2002 at 9:43 AM Rating: Default
Anyone know of a graphic out there for the Focus?

If not, what's it look like? I got one more symbol to grab (lost the bloodpriest first time) and can't wait to get this finished...

Thanks all,

Could someone describe the graphic and not just compare it to another item that a person may not know? Thanks. =)
RE: Phenocryst Graphic
# Jul 15 2003 at 11:04 AM Rating: Decent
It looks like a small hemispherical red glow pulsing around your hand.

(For yet an other comparison, it looks like the "Summoned: Hand of Ixiblat" from 62th level magician spell "Fist of Ixiblat" (icon is different of course). you might find one sold at bazaar and try it on your pet)

Hope this helps.

What the enchanter forgets is this. As a 51 Reaver I had no problems fearing the Cleric. Just have the Cleric Snared or darked and have 3 people start fearing him at 40 health. One fear will stick and away he goes. Also Mana sieve is nice but you can get away without it. Just be sure to pull the two warrs first and get them out of the way before the Cleric mosey's on up to you.

This item is absurdly easy to get for the rewards it gives.

Dont Fear the Reaver, Fear the NERFS !

Did Quest last night
# Mar 29 2002 at 1:08 PM Rating: Decent
Her guildies and my wife did the quest four times, with only one of them actually getting the focus (turning in makes Phenos depop) so the rest have to wait for him to respawn...oh well. Anyways, warning the Corrupted Panther lives in that area also. Try fighting them three giants and the CP...sheesh. One TPW of 15 peeps and the next only 5 deaths. CP is a rare spawn, lucky them. Was fun to watch.

CH going off?
# Feb 02 2002 at 4:45 PM Rating: Default
So fun. Well, for all you folks complaining about a caster trying to get off CH, you really need to remember a party's best friend:

Enchanters.

I'm not talking stun, I'm talking sieve. Get off Torment of Argili, I believe it is called, a magic-based DOT that also sieves mana, load up Theft of Thought and all your mana sieve lines. Get a couple enchanters to double-team him while you lay on the DPS. That should fix your problems.

I'm surprised a bard had to mention this to the boards, and not an enchanter. :)

I guess this quest will help alleviate high level boredom but it truly seems like a hassle for the overall item you get in the end.

Someone said that it's easy to complete this quest in 3 hours. It would take most people that long just to find 2 groups of 50+ level people to help out with the giant spawns at a certain time of day....maybe not even at all.

Too bad it doesn't have a right click effect of some sort and then it might be worth the hassle.
Quest made easy
# Nov 14 2001 at 12:06 PM Rating: Decent
Getting the first part of this quest done on ones own is relatively easy. You just need Invisibility and DMF or Levitate in the mines to glide right through it. My only problem occured when I went to the Phenocryst to turn in the focus, I had bad faction and all was for naught. Having learned a lesson here, I had the aid of a dear friend on my next attempt. Invisibility was cast on me when I was in the trade window and "woohoo" it worked . . . but my factionb was still not amiable. So, we had to do it all over again.
Necromancer/Druid parings are awesome in camps, but this made the entire quest fast and hassel free. TP, DMF, Invisibility, Sow, Bind Affinity . . . TP to where you have to do your thing, bind near the Phenocryst to cut down in running time, then all the items in under an hour.
Two groups were gathered for the final combat, a mixture of classes averaging 54th level with the tanks being in the group with the one doing the quest (so no error in the wrong one looting an amulet ;-) and a druid tracking and pulling.
All the mobs dropped relatively quick with no loses on our part.
We rested, reformed the groups and the quest was began again for another. Same scenerio but this time it went a little faster with on'y one little hitch. The first mob we killed decided he was a tree hugger and died high up in the branches of a near by tree. Fortunately, with DMF and the close proximity of the hill, the quester was able to loot her item.
Then I turned in my amulets and 'woohoo' recieved my reward.
We then ran outside to witness the little show. What a let down.
Now the other quester had to wait till the Phenocryst repoped and 2 quests done in no time.

I would personally like to thank all the parties concerned in this with especial hugs and kisses to Vivenuves and Nyrea. One kind, patient and awesome druid and the other a fantastic, and warm-hearted chanter that I value as my dear friends.
Got one at 40
# Sep 30 2001 at 7:11 PM Rating: Excellent
I got a Focus at level 40 (I'm a chanter) with the immense help of my guild. We had two groups consiting of the following: me, 46 druid, 48 bard, 48 shaman, , 48 warrior, 49 warrior, 52 warrior, 52 druid, 54 monk, and 57 paladin.

We took down the first Accolyte with no problem, shaman and 52 druid died on second one right before the heals hit. 52 warrior died during the Bloodpriest.

Bloodpriest CHed himself successfully 2 times, and almost got Gate off 4 times, but we nailed his ***** Overall it was a very fun hunt, and we got rezzes for those who died.

One final note, I was able to gather the three stones with no trouble whatsoever as long as I had Invis on. It doesn't even drop when you pick up the items.

Stein of Ulissa: water pet focus

Shovel of Ponz: earth pet focus

None have anything to do with the quest or this item though.
What level?

Can you do this quest at any level as long as you can kill the giants, or is there a lvl cap on it like the prayer shawl quests?

You can multiquest this item, as long as you're high enough to get to the pheno cave, and have indifferent faction with the geonids.

In fact, many players can just skip the first half of the quest and jump right in at saying the key phase to get the focus that you turn in with the rocks.

Did this quest twice tonight. No deaths either time. Had 7 people which consisted of:

56 Cleric (went LD in the first fight)
53 Wizzie (Me)
55 Chanter
55 Druid
54 Shaman
52 SK
51 Necro

Both times, even with the cleric going LD during the first three giants, we still kicked their ***.

ornate rune shield
# Jul 15 2001 at 6:04 PM Rating: Decent
would u go with this item or an ornate rune shield for an enchanter
RE: ornate rune shield
# Sep 17 2001 at 8:20 AM Rating: Decent
Go with both...ORS is off-hand only. But the Phenocryst is Either Hand.

Good combo, but if you need to hold a Crude stein for extra CHA I would go with the ORS.

Because as an enchanter you need the extra AC(they get beat on alot) and past 50+ you should have very near or over 200 INT. Not to mention Clarity, etc. Which gives you an extra advantage.

My 2cp :)
RE: ornate rune shield
# Jan 20 2002 at 3:46 PM Rating: Default
Thats not possible either, mate :( I tried that myself and then found that to my disappointment a crude stein is secondary slot only and so it the ORS. Therefore you would prolly end up using the Phenocryst's focus together with the crude stein or you would use a rod of insidious glamour together with the ORS which also works.

So either:
Ornate Rune Shield + Rod of Insidous Glamour
or
Crude Stein + Phenocryst's Focus

the best cha combo ive found is when you get the rod of insidious glamour with a crude stein, but there are prolly better combinations out there

Just got mine other day, quest is easy hard part is the bloodpriest he ch 2 times but we still managed to take him. I collected all the amulets and did not hand them in as we had another focus to do, we submitted the items again and killed all 3 giants a second time having a bit more trouble with the bloodpriest this time, his lvl varies, he ch 3 times and gated twice but we still managed to find him and bring him down, i then submitted the items got the focus <WOOT>,the phenocryst will then go outside and constuct the menhir, and depop for a few hours 2 i think, but not sure. we stayed for awhile and watched them combine to form the menhir but it did not respond to hails and eventuly depoped.
my friend came back next day submitted the items and got the focus, do not give the focus in at this time there is no additional quest now, friend tried it and lost it we have to do it again.
Many thanx to all who helped Fizbane shadowborn 53 mage Druzzil ro
we had 2 groups , lvl 45 to 54 my thanx to Vharalla ( we will get u another focus.
faenyar , varag, doladder , ansilons, cillailles, kerplop, tadianie, and the rest whose names escape me at the moment, a druid and bard.
btw this item does not enhace pet stats in any way, it is not one of the 4 focus items
hope this helps. good hunting all

The quest itself is quite easy Tho time consuming if you arent a wizzy, but in my opinion the reward is great. Just hit the Jboots and roll on:)

Again thanks guys....this little jewel goes great with my sorcerous bowl :)

Whould an Air element pet be good for this guy since air pets cast a stun spell?
RE: pet
# May 07 2001 at 12:07 AM Rating: Default
You can't stun giants.
RE: pet
# May 15 2001 at 2:05 PM Rating: Decent
You can't stun them as in stop them from attacking, but you CAN stun them to interrupt their casting.

Get ANY AND ALL stun abilities up and running for that blood priest. He is a PAIN IN THE BUTT!! Once he hits half hit points, start chain stunning him with everything you have.
RE: pet
# Feb 02 2002 at 3:29 PM Rating: Decent
No you can't. it gives you the "your target is immune to the stun portion of this spell" if you try it. =P
RE: pet
# Jan 04 2003 at 10:31 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, stuns do interrupt casting on immune mobs. It doesn't always work, but it does enough to make it worthwhile to use it. I've had people ask why I chain stun giant casters near the end of fights, until they see the gate spell get interrupted by me. Then everyone starts using them.

I got this today. My advice is to nuke the crap out of the Bloodpriest when he gets down to about 35 or 40% health. He was almost dead after his 2nd CH and he gated!. We could not find him and he despawed with a sliver of health. Lucky for me I had a guildmate come over and turn in his stuff and respawn the giants for me. The Bloodpriest was not able to gate the 2nd time and I was able to get the Phenocryst's Focus. Good Luck guys!

Finishing the quest for someone yesterday, got the couple of groups together. We fought at the cave entrance. The ranger (go Momz) pulled the two Zek giants, killed em both (quest gem on each), and then she went to get the Bloodpriest. Started fighting him, one casualty (ouch, he hits hard), and when he died his corpse just poofed, as if an NPC had killed him or something. This happen to anyone else, or is it a first time bug?
