I am a level 31 druid and I can solo these giant scouts easily. Whenever I loot these, I keep em for the extra strength when I need it then sell when convinent. I make nearly 12pp selling them to any NPC vendor with both of my Opal Encrusted Steins...https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=12035...equipt for the extra chrasmia. I've made about 60pp from them. good luck
Can cast in on your pet as well!!!
# Mar 01 2003 at 8:59 PM Rating: Excellent
My 43 necro always carries one of these to keep the pet buffed. They are pretty easy to farm in GD, but unfortunately they are lore, so you can only get one at a time. However, they are commonly available in the bazaar for 15-25pp (on Tholuxe Paells).

Unlike SOW Potions, which you can only cast on yourself because they automatically target you when you right click on them, Frost Giant Beards can be cast on your pet as well. Just equip it (face slot), select a target (like your pet) and then right click on it for it to work. It will give storm strength to your target. It adds +31 to strength and lasts like 45+ minutes (as long as a sow potion). Str is important to keep your pet's damage high.

Note: Unlike SOW potions, there is no cast time, so no casting bar will appear. This is important because you might think it didn't work and keep clicking on it. Don't. You'll just waste your charges (there's only 5). Just hit the pet health button to confirm whether or not your pet got it.

P.S. My 17 monk can't use this. He can equip it but the charge won't go off when right clicked.

I use this item for the Storm Strength and then sell it to an NPC vendor. They are pretty common (about 1 in 6) when I am hunting giants in GD (in a group). Storm Strength is a GREAT spell and I use it when doing my money collection rounds. I get encumbered and just right-click on this, and presto! I now can wait a bit longer before I have to go sell/bank.

Well to the guy who said ya gotta be 50: DORK! :) I grabbed one of these off a fg we killed at the fort in gd and irt cast for me when i was 40. I tried to cast it on another person, like ya can do with coldain beards and it did not work. Hope this is helpful.

I've read that all you have to do with a charged item is to leave it in your bank overnight, and it will recharge. Haven't verified this personally.

You have to have the beard equipped in your face slot to use it. If you do not have someone targetted it will not work when you right click it. I targetted myself at level 49 and it worked on me. I did not test if I could target another player and buff them also.

P.S. I was tempted to actually equip this permanently because it would give me one more AC than I normally have, BUT the weight of 1.0 is not worth raising AC by just one point. And people wonder why monks jump for joy at the sight of something that weighs 0.0 or 0.1?

I have looted a few off of the Frost giants and decided one day to test the proc, well to my amazement it gives 35 str buff , but my str buff is 40, saves mana so might use it once in awhile...also in the stats it lists as 5 AC but when I put it on it gave me 8AC, I think Varent made a mistake on there stat on this item...REALLY 3 MORE AC THAN IT SAYS IT IS
AC gear vs AC stat

Wow...I can't believe that you made it to 51 without ever noticing this. The AC increase you get from a piece of equipment never directly corresponds to the AC number it has. The exact ratio varies with level and class, but you always get more ac than the item has. I mean, there are around 20 slots (I think). Even if you had 30 ac in each, that would still only total 600ac. At lv 50 warriors usually have over 1000ac.
RE: AC gear vs AC stat
# Sep 03 2001 at 11:29 AM Rating: Decent
You get 1.6 AC for every 1 point of AC on the armor. I'm almost positive (90%) that the same holds true for weapons.
RE: AC gear vs AC stat
# Mar 28 2002 at 1:28 PM Rating: Default
I know these posts were made a long time ago, but to those so critical of the individual...the amount of AC you get from a piece of equipment is DEPENDENT ON YOUR AGILITY. Higher agility = higher AC per piece.

The AC per armor part is determined by your DEFENSE skill. That is the biggest factor period. Now if your AGI drops to 75 or below you will see a marked drop in AC. A Huge drop. But AGI over 75 doesn't do much to add to your AC. It affects it by a small amount, but not enough to worry about it.

Test it yourself. Record your total AC next time you ding. Get your AGI buffed. Record the total AC. Now take buff off. Now wait for your DEF to raise one point. Record your AC again. Now you tell me which one effects AC more per point. One AGI or one DEF? Right, Defense. That is why tanks DEF caps at 252 and casters doesn't. Else casters could get 200+ AGI and do the tanking. Think about it.

sure, AC is increased by defense, that's why a hugely twinked level 1 can't fight Mob's 20 levels above.....but you can't get items that raise defense. But you can get AC up by increasing agility, even if it doesn't have a massive effect. Rangers get low AC due to armour restrictions, and they get low defense...so they use high agility to try and get their AC up.

Don't get me wrong. AGI is definitely something good to have. I mean it can't hurt for sure. But I just cringe whenever I see melee people that are wearing low AC items with big AGI bonuses, so I wanted to put the record straight. AGI is not all that. Never sacrifice AC for AGI unless you are under 75 AGI or the AGI bonus makes the effective AC more than the other armor. Hard to test without trying things on, so it's best to err on the side of raw AC IMHO.
RE: AC gear vs AC stat
# Apr 10 2002 at 8:12 PM Rating: Decent
ALSO! Dodge (and any other Dodge like spells (parry for example)) increase AC, which I cant see a level 50 warrior, 30 ac a peice, would be 600, then 150 of AGI, then about 300 off defense, then about 200 off Dodge, parry, Ect.

Not EXACTLY sure about this, taking an Educated Guess

#Anonymous, Posted: May 03 2001 at 10:18 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you are an itiot... the 5 ac is just its base AC... your ac is based on ur defense and other factors. (All your base are belong to us)
Pricing?
# Feb 19 2001 at 8:43 PM Rating: Decent
When I found one on a Frost Giant I was so excited I immediately looked the price up on EQPrices.com. On that website (where I have a handy list of all items, stats, and pricing, kept supposedly up-to-date), the average price for the thing was around 400pp. I was giddy with excitement till I came to this website and discovery an average price of around 20pp.

I don't understand the discrepancy. Could someone enlighten me?

They drop like flies and vendors pay 10p..also see them on vendors on occasion. 10p is good enough for me as they add up fast...shame you can carry only one at a time.
Yeah, and vendors sell for 150

They drop A LOT even off low scouts. In fact any of the randoms do. You can get the good weapons like Drakkel icereaver off the lowly scouts in great divide as well as higher giants.

These beards are always on vendors in thurg for 100 - 150 plat or somewhere around there I think, cause players sell them so much to vendors.

So yeah, a players is only going to maybe pay 20 plat for one from another player.. and then probably only if low level or not in the thurg area.

I think im 85 str and 120 with storm str, whether i cast it or use one of these.

I love these things ; ) Killing frost giants for xp, faction, toes, heads I usually nearly run one out of charges when I get another one. Great never having to cast the spell myself or worry about being overloaded.

Does not work to cast on myself at lvl 36, but I was able to cast it on a lvl 38 Wizzy in our group, so it's either able to be used at lvl 37 or 38.

Yes there is a pair of gnome pirates (classic pair, one is the brain and mouth... the other is .. well ... i think the ice he is standing on has more IQ :) lol ) hail the not so smart one and he will respond and the other will bonk him and go on about needing a tinkered rope, when asked about the rope .. he says to bring he a woven beard of off the frost giant scouts so he can tie you up for ransom... i finally procured one of the woven beards (i got mine in great divide, was where i was exploring at the time) gonna try to make it back to him somtime tonite. I'll post my findings when/if the quest works

RE: Quest maby?
# Apr 05 2003 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
I think the two gnomes in question may be in Iceclad... If you zone in from a Druid port you will see them straight out from the zone (I think) a ways out. If you have Tracking just track Gnome Pirates and look for any named little guys.

There are plenty of large guys (Ice Giants) walking around for you to kill. My now 36 Druid soloed them at 34 with the only problem being the aggro range of the swirling bits of ice (I forget the name of the creatures, lol, bt you will have no problems seeing them :o)

GL to ya!

Also, if you're a bard, remember to stop singing all songs before you try to right click an item... even for insta-click items. I'm a little slow, so it took me a while to figure out why this wasn't working...

If you try to click it without selecting a target, you get an error message now. Just don't click it while targeting a mob, you'll waste a charge or two ;)

Make sure you target someone before you rightclick it. If you don't have a target, nothing will happen. I'm guessing that's the problem here.

Works great at 41. A very handy item; that's one less spell to sit/mem/cast. Storm Strength has a MUCH longer duration than Strength of Earth.
