My main character is hunting in this area. These drop about 1 per hour of camping the igloo area. I find it amusing that I see level 50+ characters with these earrings. Normally, the stuff my character buys are from lvl 55+ mobs, it is nice to see it the other way around, that lvl 50+ chars want something I can get, and get experience from. I have not sold any yet, and have provided them as gifts to friends and passed to my alternate characters (OMG I'm twinking them LOL). The lvl 50+ chars I have seen wearing them have also said that they were gifts.

The amusing thing is that there are the occaisional high 40s characters soloing the cats, and usually they have arrangements with the groups, that if the cat is green to the solo-er, he will pull it to the group and say "here have a cat" or something to that effect.

there not a really rare drop i killed and got 2 in a row
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 23 2001 at 3:26 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The price sites are very scewed from when these did sell for 3K (about a week), not easy to camp and get one but everyone that spends a couple levels in zones ends up with a bag full of them. Nerfed, but many still drop and many people have a ton in the bank and on every twink already. One night I gave away 9 of these and 30 orc fangs becuase it isn't worth my time to sell them.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 11 2001 at 4:23 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you are so full of it!

I just spent the whole evening mowing through these kitties trying for an earring, and no exageration when I say I killed at least 200 with not a single drop.

That can't be just bad luck.

i killed about 10 cougars and it dropped and won the roll :)
Drop less
# Apr 18 2001 at 10:51 AM Rating: Default
I am pretty sure that the drop rate was reduced again since last patch.. Before the Tuesday patch I got on average 2 earrings per level of killing. Since patch I leveled up 2 more times on them and got no earings.
My 2 cents
# Apr 16 2001 at 11:49 AM Rating: Default
I wanted to let everyone know servers are very different in the way people play. On mine average of 10 cougars will be killed and a earring will be there. To me the availability of the product doesnt matter. I like to know what it does. I mean dang Here is an Example not true though: i will pay 10pp for a +3agil earring and only pay 5pp for a +3 dex earring it all depends to me on weather or not the item is worth getting. Oh and cougar earrings go for 700-800pp so it really depends on people hunting areas.

# Mar 26 2001 at 10:16 AM Rating: Default
man this is CRAP i have seen them sold for a lot less than 859pp on my server i have seen them go for 250pp and once i saw someone selling an Orc fang earring for 70pp this site always has unacurate pricing :(
RE: dude

True, on Morell-Thule, if you get any more than 400pp for a Cougar Claw Earring, you are rather lucky
Not rare
# Mar 20 2001 at 3:39 AM Rating: Default
I've been camping Stormfeather and I just got 3 of these earrings in the last 30 minutes. I've been here 6 hours now and have a total of 6 earrings but I've only been killing cougars for about 4 of those hours. They aren't all that rare.
RE: Not rare
# Mar 20 2001 at 8:40 PM Rating: Default
That is true. Although I did not have such a drop rate as you've descibed, I've gotten about 4 in last 6 hours of cougar killing.

Also. 2 times that I did kill Midnight, it only carried the bone, no earring.
RE: Not rare
# Apr 09 2001 at 11:17 AM Rating: Default
I went almost completely through lv34 and 35 and halfway through 36 almost exclusively at the Cougars. I solo'd one at a time.. looted every one, and whacked one about every 6-8 minutes. In about 10-12 hours or more I got 6 or 7 earrings. I put 2 on my Warrior, put 2 on my SK, and gave 2 to a guildmate. I'm seeing them drop about one every 2 hours on average. I've gotten a couple almost in a row, but othertimes gone several hours between getting em.

Just my story.. sad but true =)
Yes, they still do drop
# Mar 17 2001 at 2:46 PM Rating: Default
I've gotten 3 in the past 2 days. Must have been reeeeeal lucky.
Extreamly Rare
# Mar 09 2001 at 8:05 PM Rating: Default
I was hunting in a group of 3 with a shaman(at least levle 30) and 28 wizzy (i am a 29 warrior).
We were hunting the cougars and to our surprise the Shaman looted a corpse and got a ear ring. He loots the next one and gets another. What are the odds of that happening again?
off higher lvl cougars
# Mar 05 2001 at 6:04 AM Rating: Default
Dont know if this has been stated, but at 39 only a few were blue to me. So those were the ones I killed, and they droped the earrings WAY more often then before at 38 when they were all blue.
Still uncommon, but far from rare, and that was the same way for 3 days of playing in the same area.
Where to find this
# Feb 28 2001 at 10:49 AM Rating: Decent
I found it in Iceclad right by the igloos by the dock. After about the 10th or 12th cougar a friend and I put down this bad boy dropped.

Good luck

I'm sure everyone who really wants one has one of these by now, cause they're getting a lot harder to unload when you head into town with a backpack full.

Then, IMHO, people should be selling them for less......

But thats only my view, they may be rare, but most of the people who can afford one, could easily go and get some themselves.

are they really worth it?
# Jan 30 2001 at 1:03 AM Rating: Default
RE: are they really worth it?
# Apr 11 2001 at 1:20 PM Rating: Decent
I would say that they are worth it as well. more armour class is always what a fighter type should go for. the str will increase your attack strength, and unemcumbered carry weight, and the dex will help ya hit a bit faster, and if you have a wep with a proc, you should see it proc more often. Orc fang earings are nice too, one less armour, and no dex, but you get 15hp per earring. If you have ever barly lost a fight or had a heal come a second too late, well that extra 30hp may have made the difference. Hard choice.

The real thing that makes these earrings so highly valued is because they have AC along with their stats. People who worship AC will throw away their electrum sapphire earrings (+4 str +2 int) in favor of these. Monks seem to like these earrings more than anyone. The earrings are worth quite a bit. How often can you buy earrings and get excellent AC as well? But to pay over 500pp for one is too much. But the demand for them is very high right now and that drives the price up. I was selling one yesterday and was traded a Forest Loop for one.
Also drops on
# Jan 22 2001 at 3:29 AM Rating: Default
These also drop off the normal Snow cougars, but seem to have a ratio of about 1 in 50-60

I got one today on a Snow Cougar near the gnome camp where the boat drops you off. Great for a tank/magician/necro and Druid combo at least 34th lvl.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 11 2001 at 1:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Sarnak earring of station still better though.
RE: Station still better
# Feb 28 2001 at 9:55 PM Rating: Decent
But Sarnak earring of station is next to impossiable to get. Its a very rare find. If you do get one you very lucky.

These are not. There about a 1 in 25 drop as I have seen... And then again, ive killed 40 and haven't seen one... Damn dry streak.
RE: Station still better
# Mar 02 2001 at 5:16 PM Rating: Default
Earing of station is better but hunting for the cougar claw earings is time better spent. You can get several of these gems in just a few dedicated hours of hunting. Then go spend your weeks of hunting time earining levels and not chasing sarnak greens!

Earrings become rare
# Dec 20 2000 at 1:20 AM Rating: Default
Is it my imagination or are these earrings becoming a rare drop? I mean the other night, I stayed and kill tons of cougars, went through 3 party groups, and power leveled two druids before I finally got one earring. If it is a rare drop, I think it would be worth about 3K each. Last I heard it was selling for 2k each. They are great earrings, but I wouldn't want to pay 3k for them. The stats on it are good but not THAT good to fork out 3k for it.

RE: Earrings become rare
# Feb 08 2001 at 10:51 AM Rating: Decent
It depends on how you look at it. One day I camped them for 11 hours RL time, killed who knows how many cougars, and had 4 drop. The next day, I did it again for 8 hours and had 14 drop. All of these were rolled for, and I consider myself fortunate to have won 3 of the rolls on them. It's all guesswork and luck.
RE: Earrings become rare
# Jan 08 2001 at 11:13 AM Rating: Default
I have 2 dropped in 1 day (RL) hunting Courge near Undead Tower and also see 2 Bloodstained Fang dropped. IMHO, the CCE is rare drop.
Just because it's "common".....
# Dec 24 2000 at 12:11 PM Rating: Excellent
Just because it's normally a "common" drop, that doesn't mean that you're going to find them the majority of the time on every hunt. All the items on a critter's loot table have a certain chance they're going to appear on the corpse. Whether it's a one in five or one in fifty chance, it's still possible to have a "dry spell" where the numbers just keep turning up against the item appearing. Yes, EVEN for long periods like several hours, it CAN happen.

There's a saying, "Dice don't have a memory." It refers to a common pitfall that people fall into when they are dealing with probabilities. Like rolling a dice, for example. There's a one in six chance you'll get a 4 (six possible outcomes, only one of the possibilities is a 4), but that doesn't mean if you roll it six times you're guaranteed to get a 4. You could roll sixty or even a hundred times and never see a 4, or on the flip side, you could roll thirty or forty 4s in that batch of 60 rolls. Both are equally likely outcomes, because (and here's what trips people up) THE PREVIOUS ROLLS HAVE NO BEARING ON THE OUTCOME OF FUTURE ROLLS. Each one is independent, the probability of getting the desired result is the SAME each roll regardless of what the earlier rolls were.

Now, EQ may have some additional things built in, like something that increases the odds for an item if it hasn't spawned in X hours, or some such. But even with something like that, I have a feeling that they'll never push the odds for anything that isn't a guaranteed loot up to 100% (that's usually reserved for quest items on medium-to-rare or relatively difficult to kill creatures).

Sorry for getting so long-winded. Sometimes I think I shoulda gone into teaching and been a professor instead of fixing computers :)

Logged in (luckily I was at docks) and started killing these cougars. Killed Midnight also and got some fang and bone off of him. Got me 2 Cougar Claw Earrings about 6 spawns apart. Stayed on for another 2 hours and only one more dropped.
Midnight
# Dec 13 2000 at 12:41 AM Rating: Default
The other day we were pulling to the gnoll camp near the tower and pulled a black panther named Midnight. He dropped this earring and a bloody cougar bone. Pulled him again about 30-45 mins later and only got the bone.

That's for the Garou Bone Club quest... Here's hoping you let the Cleric/Druid/Shaman in the group loot one of those bones.
RE: Midnight
# Feb 24 2001 at 8:14 PM Rating: Default
i agree this should be done with a priest class cause i hate it when ppl have a person in the group that can use it and everyone rolls but -- midnight is alot more likely to drop the earing and drops the bone always (i think) he isnt much harder than a normal snow cougar but requires a lil debuffing for ease of disbatching.
RE: Midnight
# Apr 27 2001 at 5:10 AM Rating: Decent
????????????

You do not realise how many times Monks (and other classes who cant use REAL nice equipment..) have one the Polished Granite Tomahawk and Cracked darkwood Shield!!!!!

Who cares if you do or dont have a pirest class in your group, but the only people who actually NEED the stuff should roll for it. Then when everyone who needed the stuff has it (IF it drops more than once) other group members can roll for it (and sell it for an unimegineable high price!)

But thats IMHO

I don't think there dropping anymore...
# Dec 10 2000 at 6:51 AM Rating: Default
I hunted just before the last patch and got two in less than 5 hours. After this last patch I went back because I gave my pair to a good friend and I hunted them for 8 hours and saw nothing bu t pelts. So I would not get your hopes up this may be another bait and switch deal where Verant messed up the drop tables.
RE: I don't think there dropping anymore...
# Dec 15 2000 at 12:58 PM Rating: Decent
They are definitely still dropping. The group I was in last night (just three people including me) had two drop in the span of about thirty minutes. Of course I lost the roll on both. :( They are a random drop off any cougars, including Midnight.
RE: I don't think there dropping anymore...
# Feb 02 2001 at 9:32 PM Rating: Default
Yes these still drop. Just arrived in velious and have hunted just off the dock in iceland ocean, for the last 3 nights. And we as a full group, has looted about 5 of these. Won one so far. WOOT WOOT!!! But my ranger buddy has won 3. I wish i had his luck. Errrrr, her.

THEY STILL DROP AS OF 12.15.00 just alot more rare
RE: I don't think there dropping anymore...
# Dec 10 2000 at 5:56 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, they are still dropping, as I have scored one or two more since the patch, however, I have to say that they altered the frequency with which they are dropping. By a ton. I sold the first few I looted for 2k a pop, but now, with the increased rarity, I can't see the price going anywhere but up.

RE: I don't think there dropping anymore...
# Dec 10 2000 at 5:33 PM Rating: Decent
bingo !!! farmer that know got them while they could but ... the price will only go up...if ya get XP then hunt them get the ratio if no XP and you dont need ...bah go elsewhere more stuff to kill really there is.
Look Good for monk or Warrior:)
# Dec 08 2000 at 12:05 PM Rating: Decent
Just from the stats i would say this is the second best earring for a warrior and maybe for a monk:)..hoping to get my copy of velious soon to get some of these for my 49th monk and my 12th warrior. Anyway you look at it if they are common or uncomman they are worth the time to find. Hope verant does not do to these what they did to forest loops.
RE: Look Good for monk or Warrior:)
# Dec 17 2000 at 8:41 PM Rating: Default
To late they already did. But that makes me happy cuase i can trade it for a second yak. or 2 for a tree weave. So good luck geting them
