Paladins get the hardest quest...wow, took you all of 10 seconds to figure that out eh? Of course we do. Moreover, try pointing out our worth to anyone in the high end game, we are just as much a joke as the Rangers.

Paladins are not for those who want easy quests. Paladins are not for those who want everything handed to them on a silver platter, and definitely not for those who want 95% of the game engineered to their needs and desires. This is not a nooB class. Any simpleton can smash and destroy, it takes FINESSE to be a Knight. It takes STYLE, and by god it takes MATURITY, something sorely lacking on my humble server.

On Torvo, there are a grand total of four level 60 paladins. There are several up and coming, however none of them are epic equipped. There are 7 on Torvonnilous with the Defender. I happen to be one of them. I, a mere 52, without an uberguild, by working my ever loving *** off, managed to do the virtually impossible. So what if a bunch of warriors think the blade sucks. These are the same simpletons who turn on autoattack, then go afk in a major engagement because a brain dead chimpanzee could play that class. This weapon is more than a simple beatstick...it is a mark of honor. It shows that by god, you earned your place, made your mark, and have the courage and force of will to dare to tilt at windmills.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 09 2002 at 7:08 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Aye, pally is not what you say as a skillful hard to use class. It is one of the good class to start up. Among all the hybrids, it shows the less importance. It is just for the noob that want to look cool , want to tank, and also want to cast, but don't really know what they actually want to do to choose to be a pally lol. That will explain why pally is not important at all in upper raid. It does look cool, but hybrid is not important compare to pure :P
RE: Fiery Defender
# Apr 09 2002 at 7:06 AM Rating: Default
also, for your epic say, you said you had epic at 52 without an upper guild. That was easy to get then. Why there is so little pally has epic? Not becoz the epic is hard to do, as you had it at 52, but becoz those pally out there are 90% noobs. Most of them didn't even do a quest (except df belts) lol Even one step quest is so hard to get them to do, how do you expect them to finish a multi step quest. This is why there is so few pally epic out there. Lvl 52 without a lot of high lvl help and support to get epic? That was way to easy

I aggreed with most of that post, except for the ~. These are the same simpletons who turn on autoattack, then go afk in a major engagement because a brain dead chimpanzee could play that class~
I can not imagine going afk during a fight, my entire attention is focused during a fight, watching my taunt level, making sure the mob does not aggro the casters in my group. keeping an eye open for adds. I often find that warriors have the highest level of awareness of any combat situation. Merely because paladins require a different style of play does make them any more likely to not "go afk in a major engagement" its the person playing the character not the class that dictates there abilities.

and until I remember to change my signature im 36 not 31:)

i got to have my 2cp on this. i argee with all of u. cept on one thing rangers and pallys are not useless at all. i have both a ranger and a paladin and i love them both they are both intertesting and fun to play. the paladin epic isnt really that bad and people shouldnt care if their warrior or some other hybrid has a more suiting epic for their class. earlier in these post theres a guy comparing 2hs to 1hs. 2hs is an awesome dmg dealing style that is slow than theres the 1hs fast and not as high in the dmg (single weilding). whatever u choose to use is up to u and there is no rule saying pallys have to use 2hs or rangers have to use 2 1hs.

Iz my opinyon dat udder melee types who get to do az day pleaz while dah wurrier tanks, dem udder wurriers are dah onez who cud be played by chimpaz...chinpan...played by monkies.

No fense to monks, rangers, pawadins, shadey nites, and udders, but if youz aint a wurrier you aint gunna hang while tankin da big mobs. Youz just can't take da beetin. Youz do haz an impotent role tho. No one likes to be left out.

Laff

I hate the common misconception that pallies can't tank NEAR as well as warriors. We have the same Defense camp warriors do, but not quite as much HP..but close. When fully buffed in a high-end raid situation, I have 1k+HP and close to 4kHP at level 53. I CAN and HAVE tanked the big mobs...not necessarily the ToV mobs and High-end Kael stuff...but at this level, I can tank just as well as any warrior I've grouped with. And I can get aggro off a caster faster than any warrior. With that said...I must say, that I'd never accept a MA position over a 60 warrior unless he just plain sucked. That's what they're for, and yes, they have more HP and sometimes more AC than paladins... But for right now...as a level 53 Paladin, I will gladly be MA for any high-end mobs over a warrior my level.

Let the flames begin..just stating from experience.

About Pally tanking... I play a 57 cleric on torvo and I've found my BEST and SAFEST XP came when I was grouped with a Paladin as my MT. Think about it paladins... how often are you trying to avoid aggro, a lot, no? Well when the **** hits the fan and you have 5 mobs in camp, god loves the paladin cuz they are AGGRO MAGNETS. Can't count how many times a pally in two swings a bash and stun later have aggro back off my chanter i'm spam healing or myself(saves my invul spells) Not saying tanks are a bad choice or SK either, but Paladins have my vote for MA (unless I have a higher level warrior =P) Just my two cents
RE: Fiery Defender
# Jun 11 2002 at 5:24 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah I agree I have been in several situations where I have been the MT in a group or even a raid when there have been Warriors present. Even with a 2hs I have stole and maintained aggro from a dual wielding warrior in a fight. Paladins are just a defensive class in general.

Don't knock Paladins, they have probably saved your *** more times than you can ever remember. It takes a player that's not greedy and selfish to play a Paladin, because while they have the ability to CH themselves among other things, I have seen more often than not a LoH go to another party member. Peace.

# Mar 19 2002 at 12:48 AM Rating: Good
forgive me because I'm only lvl 40 and this is my first time reading this board in particular, but the only class I've ever played extensively is a paladin and from my understanding we get ac buffs, we get decent heal, we even get self regens, and a lot of the our armor is ac oriented. I may be a half elf but I could take a hit better than a ogre warrior any day. It just makes me want to laugh when I see a warrior talking about a paladin not doing anything in a 50+ fight because half the time I'm sitting there trying to taunt a mob off a warrior's butt because he traded in some ac for strength gear. My understanding is that paladins were designed to sit there, take hits, and not be a pain to heal.

this weapon
# Sep 30 2001 at 10:53 AM Rating: Excellent
I will say now, there is absolutely nothing wrong or bad in anyway with this weapon. I have one, and I can say nothing but good things about it. I have found that this weapon is for pally's, nobody else, and I dont say this because of the fact that it is the pally epic. I say this because this sword is our complement. It goes with our spells, our skills, and it goes with them well. Just remember, there are only flaws in a weapon, if you try to compare yourself and the weapon to every other class.

Each class has it's specialty, be it damage dealing, damage taking, healing, buffing, nuking, or any combo. Pally's are a combo that leans towards certain things more than others. Pally's are first and foremost damage takers. After that, we are damage dealers. We have another interesting thing to, we are also nukers, after we get our final undead nuke, toss one in occasionally, big difference in damage. And finally, what will build a reputation for you, is how you play the healers role. Pally's can heal, and do it well. They can save a cleric, or a warrior, or keep a group from experiencing a complete wipe. All of these are a pally's skill, and the Fiery Defender helps with all of them. AC for damage taking, really decent damage/delay ratio and hp's for damage taking, and wisdom and mana for all those spells that many people dont think much of, but could save the group when they least expect it. Is this a great weapon for paladins? Hell yes. Is this a great weapon for other classes? Hell no, they cant fully utilize all the skills that the Defender compliments.

This is a great weapon.

Effects
# Jul 22 2001 at 1:36 AM Rating: Excellent
I'd just like to clear a couple of things up on the effects of the Defender...First, it's 150DD combined with a stun, that may or may not have an actual duration...it's enough to say that the stun will last for so short a time you won't notice it probably and might as well be called a zero duration stun. The stun only serves to interupt casting and is unresistable. It is unfortunate that the stun and the DD are a proc, so the stun is basically usless unless it happens to go off when your opponet is casting...Second, there isn't any DOT associated with it..that was a bug that was fixed many months ago. The bug allowed the DD to became a DOT after the first couple of seconds and its duration was basically infinite. Allowing paladins to kill everything in a single blow...given they had the time to stick around and watch it die. That is no more though and it now works like it was intended...Third and last, though its not posted on the weapons stats, you can bash with it...yes...bash...even though its a 2hs wep and you don't have a shield. All in all, I would consider the weapon to be "fair" when compaired to other epics...but when put in the hands of a paladin of a high 50s lvl...well...its the cherry on top of the sunday. The stats and saves it gives are nothing to sneeze at and the AC is nice...damage is good but not great...but the proc leaves you wanting more...heh...thats just like that cherry though...always looking for another...Ok, that's my two copper. Later all, be safe and good hunting

Just my 2cp my friend.

I play a 46 paladin, and I have a range of spells I use during combat. 3 of the spells always in my spell bar are cease (.5 sec stun), desist (1.5 sec stun) and stun (3 sec stun) (the durations might be more or less, but you get the jist of what i'm trying to say, the stuns don't last long). I have these spells in my spell bar for two reasons. The main reason is to stop casters from casting. The second, and more important reason if I'm main tank, is to take aggro. Stun spells take aggro like nothing else, and that is why the stun was included in the proc. A proc (major taunt magnet), a dd (another taunt magnet) and a stun (more tauntage) all in one proc? Can you say "anyother tank try to take aggro from me now?".

Lot of arguing going on here about what is better and how it is so hard. This should be a fun place to go and look at the stats on your epic. lvl 50 paladin here out taunts a warrior his level, and I do it with Soulfire. The apparent Crappy weapon. It's all in how you do things. Stun is the key. Warrior getting to much of a beating? Cast those two stuns you have and slam that taunt button. Mob will be on your azz like white on rice, everybody flames paladins for what they can't do, never realizing what they can do. Im not saying it's the best class....far from it, but 9 times out of 10 I have seen that it is the paladin that saves your azz when the cleric can't.

Secondly....Fiery Defender proc to clear it up for you. 155DD with a 1.5 second stun. ALSO....it is a 155 DoT every tick and the duration from what I have learned is permanent until dead. OR a nulify magic to get rid of it.

Not as bad as we all thought now is it.

Just to put this at the top of all the posts..

Then they always post anon too which really pisses me off. Why dont you little monks just keep your posts off the boards if you are going to put something really stupid like 'Ohhh this is a monk item'. Im really tired of having to read about trash like that when I read the posts. And also if you sharpen up the edges it would only be a sharper weapon, ******.

The Tests that make us who we are
# Jun 10 2001 at 9:50 AM Rating: Decent
Paladins are the Holy Knights of thier deity, representing the hand of thier gods. Therefore we seem to be put through the most rigorous tests, why you ask, nobody has told me yet. I have had the SF part done for almost 2 months and have been in on every friggin Dragon Raid I heard about and still no friggin book, got one and that seems to be all I am gonna get. Randoming for the book is a joke and it seems that all the raids hosted by Uber guilds have the book merited to the Pallies of thier guild. While I am not against this, I have seen up to 3 books drop offa Vox and 1 pally got one and the others went to casters for thier epic. What a crime, Verant realy outta do something about this, ie. up the spawn rate on the dragons and or up the drop rate on the books. There are better damage/delay weapons coming outta Sleepers but they seem to lack the stats bonus's that this provides a Paladin. Putting the books on Dragons that over53 folks can get in on seems to me to be fair but it still don't help much, cause by then you can raid Sleepers etc. and get better, so why do the quest? 'Cause it is what the game is for, that's why they call it everquest, DUH! I for one will keep pluggin away at it in hopes that one day soon I shall weild the mighty holy sword.

Ok, the paladin epic is not easy, mainly becuase of the rarity of the books, and the level limit on vox/naggy raids. The reason you don't see many necro epics is because it sucks. The quest is not impossible, it just takes a while and some luck.

LOL every 55+ cleric, rogue, enchanter, ranger or warrior I see has their epic weapon. I tell you the truth, you can count the number of pallies who have their epics on the five fingers of your hand. On our server there are 2 pallies that have their epics. They are both level 60, both in the same guild. Neither of them had to compete with other pallies because they were in the first uber guild on our server. They had their FA's before the FD epic was created. To the poster that said this quest is hard as hell and not worth it, it IS worth it and is fairly easy, BUT YOU HAVE TO BE IN AN UBER GUILD TO GET! Gotta love Verant =)

RE: Is worth it, but --

Yeah it's worth it. If you hvae the money. Cause to get into a Dragon raid for Naggy/Vox...you better bribe for the roll. It's admittedly not a fair roll. So yuor chance is slim to none and none just left Norrath. IF you get in..Naggy will drop his most of the time....Vox...well..she is a different critter. RARE drop. As in maybe one in 15 times if you lucky. I talked to the only peep on Bristlebane I know has his. Took him 29 times with Vox to get that book. One on Naggy. THEN you have the ninja looters. Gotta love them. The Pally who is in the group that gets the exp kill will almost always ninja it. He would rather get a one week suspension then have to try again for the book. Just not fair. Anyone else have to wait and roll for a spawn for thier epic? anyone? Hmmm guess not. Well....verant can kiss my *** bottom line. At level 51 my Pally is benched to play a real class. Monk. They seem to love them at Verant for some reason. Easiest epic and tons of planes gear and stuff. Oh well
