OK mister super necro. I been spending last 2 nights watching a pally(57) solo in the planes, but they can't take or do dmg. guess he was getting lucky for 5 or so hours. Plane of justice one night and even mobs in Plane of nightmare on another(hes a guildie). We also took out the level 60 mindworm(a thought stealer) in ME with paladin, cleric and bard. Yeah paladins are sucky tanks tho. sounds to me like you just got somethign against them.

Are warriors better tanks? yeah. are sks? well they taunt better(spells for that, pallys can only stun at high levels to add agro) and can do a little bit more dmg(spells again) but they don't take it any better. Lets see? rangers? hell no, they do awesome dmg(that is their job) but their effective ac cap is too low. a pally with 1200 ac will take less dmg per shot and get hit less than a ranger with 1500 ac. Monks? well they can only taunt with dmg for one, their effect ac cap REALLY sucks being a leather class. Yeah guess you only group with warriors then as tank. have fun with em, see how many time they can save yer *** with a heal, LH, or root a mob beating you as you run to a zone screeching like a school girl like a schoolgirl[FD don't work every time] ;)

Oh yeah necro pets are among the worst pets for TAKING DMG, only shm are really worst about it, rog pets do good dmg if you give them a back tho.

Sorry Ardnahoy but your wrong... Paladins are pretty much useless in eq.. They have usefull stuns but their tanking skills and damage skills are enough to make you laugh.. 150dmg every 3 seconds isn't very good.. My 55 necs pet does 57,55,57,57 then a 1-161 dmg backstab.. Although he has slow damage he can EASILY out damage a paladin. + he procs a 50hp lifetap to add on to that.

Actually, not so much. I dueled a pally from my guild, for fun, and he was a level or two higher that me at the time. We were both comparably equipped from elementals and I absolutely raped him. I don't think I got below 60% before he fell down and went boom.

Granted, rogues do insane DPS and all, but I was also able to resist his roots and stuns almost every time.

Guess it just depends on gear and level, though. At lower levels with less resist, he'd probably have taken me down with roots and stuns, then beat the stuffing out of me.

I have a level 13 paladin that does more overall damage then a warrior friend i have. His Level 16 warrior cannot keep up with me. We group and get into a fight, he has to sit while i heal and keep going, and then i have to heal him, and then re-buff both of us. p.s. orc warriors in the Oasis are cheap.

Yeah, maybe at level 13. But at level 20 (even though you get double attack), he will easily outdamage you by at least 2-to-1 and will outlast you as a tank. By level 40, he has nearly double your hitpoints and will outdamage you 3-to-1.

I'm not knocking paladins, seeing as my main is a paladin, but every class is basically similar under level 20. A paladin't role changes dramatically once we hit level 30 (stuns, decent heals and buffs, and IoN). We become the second in line to tank, and the fifth in line to deal damage. We also become the third in line to heal (after clerics and patch healers are oom).

If you do have a 45 pally I hate to think what you are doing wrong that a warrior your level has double your hp and outdamages you 3-1!! At 52 I have about 80% the hp of a warrior in similar gear and damage is damn close to equal. With C2 I can Flame of Light (125dd) and Holy Might(60dam stun) pretty much constantly - never forget that your spells make you what you are, otherwise you WILL just be a second rate warrior.

He is right. Paladins were designed to be less good for tanking than wars. The devs themselves claim that 2hs(ie, what paladins wield) are under the dmg of 1hs(ie, what warriors wield). Your spells DO make a paladin, however, and that kind of attitude is what makes a paladin into an awesome group member.

A paladin is just using melee attacks? What? That's not a paladin. SKs need to hold aggro, esp with an enchanter(AOE str drain is great). The paladin can take the strain off of the cleric by GHealing(I grouped with a pal that was fom while cleric was OOM, useless), therby often being a more useful asset than a druid. A wiz can evac, and they do better dmg, though it's no rogue there.

Though the spells really make a pally, the 2hs is definately under 1hs, but that might change soon. Similar to the "uber SSOY" changing.

Paladins do get kick butt weapons and armour not to mention our spells (90% exp rez and a 600 hp heal) but look at what we have to accomplish to get these items. 600 Hp heal at level 57 and 90% exp rez at level 59. I play on a PVP server (Vallon Zek) and I have only seen one person with the Fiery Avenger and no one has gotten the Fiery Defender so far on my server. And theres a new weapon thats from a Plane of Growth quest its called Natures Defender (paladin only must follow Tunare) and i believe it will be a long time before i see anyone with that weapon. So yes i think Paladins should get the best weapons because of what we have to go through to get them. I did my Armour of Ro quests at level 30 with alot of help from a 50+ druid friend of mine and i did my Soulfire quest with the help of my old guild and if not for those two quests id probably be level 60 by now because they were so time consumming. This has to be the best 1hs weapon a Paladin can get and once i get 50 you can bet im going after this item probably before i even attempt the Fiery Avenger. just my 2 cents =)

You need it, that's why.

Face it, paladins NEED the better weapons to stay competitive in the damage output of the other tank classes in the game. Paladins get the great AC bonuses of the warrior and shadowknight with their selection of armor, however, unlike the warrior, you only get one weapon to use at any given time. Unlike the shadowknight, the majority of your spells, like a cleric, are buffs and often useless cuz you've got a cleric in your group who has better buffs than you. SK's spells add a lot of damage potential, as long as a necro isn't around. ;)

The hierarchy of damage output by tanks goes (and this is a rough estimate from a stat I read somewhere) are:
Monk, Warrior, Ranger, Shadowknight, Paladin

Agreed, Paladins appear to be the "favored" class of Verant. This is probably because the lead developer of the game play(ed/s) a paladin. So it is this class that gets the good stuff first as Verant is trying to explore new areas for tanks and mixed classes.

However, in terms of class balancing issues, if you put a Paladin head to head with a Shadowknight dealing damage against a random mob, the Shadowknight will win because of their spells. A pally vs monk? Forget it, pally's have the staying power, but as the Tests of Steel proved, monks whooped paladins every time (and most other classes for that matter). VS a Warrior or Ranger, you still don't compare, not even close. So to compensate for this class's significant (though I think ONLY) shortcoming, Verant has provided the good weapons. ;)

I'm not anti-paladin here, I've played the class, and I've played the others. I prefer the other tank classes personally, but I"m a necro at heart. ;)

So please, have a little humility when asking why you're so awesome.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention is another of the Paladin's greatest tools. Staying power. So don't get bummed over my post there. ;) Remember, when the rest of the party has fallen or fled to this really nasty mob that's at 10% health and things are looking bleak for everyone else, the Paladin simply steps in its face, takes the hits, and just as the mob is about to laugh in victory, the paladin completely heals himself and beats the mob down. :) This is the biggest advantage of the Paladin, LoH rocks, plain and simple.

Gimme a break. The first guy is right and Pally do rock. The FINEST weapons. Many of which are Pally only. Fiery Avenger, Fiery Defender, Nature's Defender, Soulfire but to name a few. With our Buffs, Flash of Light and most importantly the kick *** LOH!!!!.......we can whup a similar level warrior anytime. LOH and the others offset whatever advantage the warrior or other have in damage output easily. Warrior is all flurry , but when that's said and done, they will be on the ground and the Pally will still be duking it and taking it on the chin like a true melee should. Better soloers..less downtime between fights. Hell, we look better with our equipment! Pally Rock.

well first off in a group with a decent healer sk's are much better than paladins. all pallys have are good ratios and stuns. sk's get debuffs hate spells, dots,nukes, lifetaps,feign death, pets,great ratio's buffs that help group regain hp and mana as well. warriors get 2 weapons that create more aggro. they also get 2 epics each with a huge hate proc, and great stats. they have higher innate hp/ac then paladins and in the endgame your not gonna have a paladin doing any heals.

you guys are saying how our weapons rock? look at the quests for FA, FD, and SF. i mean, these quests are hard as hell, just to get the FA you need to get SF and GB, then win the random on the random drop off both naggy and vox, then pay 1kpp to combine em, and then do some other **** with a 53 necromancer like kick ihs ***, then turn the FA with like some other hard *** to get stuff to get FD, people, just because we get kick *** weapons, doesnt mean that we will ever get them...

I'm not suprised you are unimpressed. Most poeple underestimate Flash of Light. Being a lvl 9 Pali spell, I have no idea when clerics get it, and this makes it seem worthless. Well let me tell you it isn't. It is the only low lvl spell I keep memorized most the time. I have found that it is is one of the best taunt's in the game. I have been in groups with monks fughters ,and rogue's who are higher lvl than me, and obviously are doing more damage than me, but I am almost always able to keep the mob focused on me with FOL. It is a kick *** taunt. It works better than "Taunt" itself, and taunts better than all the other spells I have, stun may be close, but stun casts so slow, and has such a slow recast time it dosn't make a good taunt. It casts fast, uses next to no mana, Has next to no recast time, and best of all it pisses the mobs off big time. It is also a great escape spell when soloing in open areas, and in PvP it also rocks. Hard to fight someone when your screen is black. Just some food for thought there.

I agree I keep Flash of Light memed almost all the time. Usually in place of stun unless we are fighting spell casters. It does taunt well but it is resisted alot but as you mentioned its recast and mana are a joke to higher levels. It is like a rangers snare spell you get it at low level and use it for almost the whole time you play your char. Flash works wonders in duels against melee especially, but if you got up against a caster that has his/her spells hotkeyed then your in big trouble.

True. A caster who has his spells hot-keyed can defiantly be more of a problem, but this is where a Paladins true strength lays, Paladins are the known kings of Chain stunning. If he's stunned he isn’t nuking you, and while he is stunned you are pummeling him. Not that a caster isn't a problem, Stuns can be resisted, but Paladins would def have an easier time with casters than any of the other tank classes. I personally don’t much care for PvP myself. Too many ego problems come up, but I used to think that Paladins were the weakest PvPers in the game. Well, a friend of mine who also plays a high lvl paladin proved me wrong recently. We may seem weaker in the game when playing against mobs, due to our damage output, but in PvP beware the Paladin. We can root you, blind you, stun you. Buff ourselves, remove buffs from you, and remove de-buffs, and we can heal ourselves to full almost three times over. This makes up for our weaker damage output somewhat.

I've played a Paladin now for just about 50 levels (1 yellow bubble from 50 at the time of this post) and there are a few things I have to say about how "awesome" the Paladin class is. Its true that the majority of the best weapons and armour in the game belong to us.. however it is also true that we need them more than any other class. Paladin damage output is pathetic, especially vs. mobs.. Paladins are not damage dealers, we are tanks, plain and simple. We exist for the purpose of pulling the mob off of our casters or healers or damage deals (i.e. Monk, rogues, etc, who fold up like a lawn chair when a mob focuses on them). Never let your damage output discourage you.. it isn't what we're there for. Paladins ARE a very effective anti-caster class for PvP .. where I am now, I have 2 stuns, the ability to bash with a shield, I can root, I can blind, I can debuff, I can make myself stronger and tougher and I can heal myself. When used properly, this combination of abilities is a serious hazard to anyone who tries to kill a Paladin. Before level 40 or so, though.. we unfortunately are rather poor from a PvP standpoint.. just don't have the spells or the power to back us up. it is true that for damage output among melee types we do come in last, because of SK spells.. however, from a tank perspective we are second only to a Warrior due to our buffs. AND a warrior can't backup heal his group in a pinch, nor can he taunt mobs off of better damage dealing group members simply because "taunt" is next to useless at higher levels. Warrior can't stun, root or blind, all of which are far better taunts than "taunt" ever was. Paladins are defiantely strongest when in a group, but that's what the game is based on, so I see no problem there.

Paladins on PvP servers serve a very interesting purpose.. you should try it sometime.

SKs are, in my opinion, a bit better than Paladins for tanking high level(pallies still own spellcasters). Why's this? First, most of the pally buffs are lower level cleric buffs. An even bigger reason is that Shroud of Pain and Shadow Vortex stack on Shadowknights, giving a stacked 30pts of armor class. They also hold aggro better with such spells as DC(though nerfed), WOE, and sometime WOS. Those spells do taunt better than pally spells, but they don't have much for interrupts. Harm touch interrupt, woot!

A good, prepared Shadowknight will also break mezz almost as soon as it's cast on him by casting DC on himself.

Pallies and SKs are both great to have around. That's dependent on who is playing them. Player skill is what makes or breaks a hybrid.

This weapon is a beautiful thing. Out of all the one-handed slashing weapons in the game found so far, this one has the best damage/delay ratio in the game! It's light, unlike the Wurmslayer, and it's effect is, well, interesting. We don't get any vs.summoned spells, so this is a great weapon to take along with you when the casters ask you to come to The Hole with them.
The only downside I see is the fact that it's stat bonuses leave something to be desired. +5 Wis is fine and all, but most weapons of this calibur have at least some other bonuses. But thats not enough to make this weapon suck.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise: this weapon ROCKS!
