My main char Norb (Norbury) has fabled tallon zek bow, max crit 8600 (using disc) so far. Takes a lot of sword hits to make this number. Hard to say what the ave reg hit is but around 2300 is the normal crit no disc. No doubt both sword and bow have their place but I get sick of people saying bow went out with the old days. And I still gotta compare the 2 with a parser, and compare the parser to a manual count to make sure it is recording all hits.

You're comparing items that are several years apart. Take mmm/crystallos weapons against a bow and you'll have no questions.

I sent a private message to the ranger lead designer and he private messaged me back saying that the PoP era ranged dps was out of wack and too and that it was adjusted to put ranged dps back in line with melee dps. He then went on to say that the AA ability AM is suposed to make ranged dps = melee dps. The problem is that while melee weapons have become better and better ranged weapons have not kept pace. The designer did also mention that he would look into tweaking ranged weapons some to get them up to speed with melee weapons. It is my opinion that a bow is basicaly a two handed weapon and should have stats like two handed weapons, and rangers should see ranger only bows with stats like pally/sk only two handed weapons. I myself like to use both melee and ranged but don't have a preference.

Ive had this for a very long time and i LOVE it. I have max crit aa's and crit for max ~800, usually hitting 400's(with Harrier Mace from CoA as secondary)
My opinion on bow vrs sword debate: Sword, 100% sword. If you can get this, that means guild is in CoA(or got help) and can get Plaugebreeze, which is iirc 2nd best bow pre-TSS(2nd to DPoB Sisters Bow). The sword is by far the best 1hs u can get until ur guild raids TSS, and increases ur dps by alot. Really when you are criting for 2/3-1/2 of what u max crit on bow, but hit 4-6x faster, what is th point in even using the bow unless ur in a raid with aoe's being slack, whatev lol. Really there shouldnt be any complaining about this.
And then the effects: The DD increaser i have been waiting for, i had a lvl 70 one, but when you get Summers dew, icefall, ash, etc, u can get 1.6k normal hits with ice, 1.5k with ash, and like 1.8k combined with summers dew. Now if i had crit aa's then thats even more, but really the effect is a great effect for anything. Then the clicky is even better: i use it if i think about it and when i do its basically 90%hits, missing only every few, im guessing it could double my DPS when used.
That was alot of rambling, its 330am here o.0 but that is my input on this weapon(the best wep you can get unless ur raiding TSS)
Wow

I'm a 900 AA ranger, my max hit is 945 (crit) unbuffed. With Kirkoten it's around 970, and with Outrider's Accuracy it's around 1.2-1.3k, with the Shaman 2.0 it goes to around 1.5k (as I don't think they stack correctly yet.) the epic click I really myself haven't noticed much as I've never parsed just with it, and just without it. I've been sporting this weapon for almost a year now. Got it at lvl 75 though, not 70 =\

No, I do not have this weapon as of yet. Yes I am pretty gimpy, as my magelo shows. But, my dear lord people. Stop your complaining about the fact that this is not a bow. Go to your AA's and look up how many archery AA's, not many anymore. And after the AM3 nerf we don't hit as hard as we used to with bows. Let's face it, Sony may have intended on us being a archery type class, but in the end they made us a Melee DPS class. So, please stop complaining. When your in a group and the tank goes down, and you have this little baby. Your time to step up and be a ranger will be at hand, because your going up for tanking. Not the cleric.....So this WILL help you more than a bow.

Wow...finally got done reading all the chatter about the Bow vs. Sword debate.

Personally as a 72 Ranger (at the time of this post) I still would like to have a Bow Epic. In my mind it made sense... Epic 1.0a sword, Epic 1.0b sword, Epic 1.5 Bow.

Granted I am not from what you would call a traditional "high end" guild, I do come from a guild of tremendously talented players. The main thing each of these people has is cooperation. No matter what style you play your character, you do it in symphony with the other players you raid with.

My personal style is bowing. Even at the reduction of DPS that SoE gave us. Most people never say why they do what they do...but here is my reason: Backup support. As a ranged melee I can stand in the back doing decent DPS and watch the action much better then standing toe-to-toe with mobs. I compliment the Chanters by preslowing and or kiting adds till they are locked down. I grab aggro off the clerics and casters when something goes after them. I can take a punch or too trying to defend those that are supporting the tanks. I think this style fits me well as well as the raid force. Nothing worse then having a mob break ranks and start wiping your mages and wizzys out in seconds when there is no protection in the rear ranks.

Does this make me less of a character?? Hell no. In fact I can tell you I have save more then a few raids from wiping because I was ranged DPS and saw and took care of a problem in the rear before it effected the main raid. No I'm not superman and will whole heartedly say I'm gimp, but it never hurts to have protection around your casters, and if I had an epic bow I could add so much more to the DPS from afar while still protecting my casters.

Does that mean I don't melee? no. But in my play style, melee takes second fiddle. I even went so far as to evolve my Clockwork Farshot Armor Piercer because it was supposed to be our "epic bow" at least at some early dev point. I truly beleive they should have made that bow the end game bow but made it a much longer evolve time. It took me months to evolve it from beginning to end but I would have waited longer still to make it epic level.

End all... they should have given us a choice. Melee rangers get the sword they deserve, while the bow rangers get the bow they so want. SoE made us that flexible, so make our options flexible as well.

Are you guys still talking about this? People still think it should have been a bow? Why in the world would anyone go through a quest like this for a weapon they would only use once an hour when trueshot is up?

Yes people are talking about it because plenty of people still desire a bow. You may know many who want a sword, I know many who want a bow.

Why would I go trough a quest like this for a weapon?

So it does more damage when trueshot is NOT up. That's the point I think you are missing. The point IS to have an epic bow with increased DMG stats. I want a bowing weapon that I can use instead of a sword so my DMG output is of sufficient level I am not required to melee.

I could never understand people that don't want to allow the option of a bow weapon. They seem to be very narrow minded to ranger styles and duties a ranger can perform.

Devs have stated many times that Bows will Always produce less DPS than weapons, because of the fact that ranged weapons/DPS is less risk than melee (can avoid AEs, AE page, less aggro, etc).. so hate to say it but keep dreaming

NEVER ASKED FOR EQUAL DPS... just sufficient enough that bowing is more reasonable again. I want a bow because it fits my play style. I dont' care about being UBER DPS. I care about fitting the role "I" feel I belong. All those worried about sword dps etc are missing something important, THIS IS A GAME AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. You should be able to play the way you want.

You go use your sword if you want... I want a bow... like it or not, some want bows. Oh by the way, in many of the raids I go in the rangers are ranged. Just an observation. They will occasionally melee, but most stay ranged.

Why can't SOE just make an option, bows for people that want bows, swords for those that want swords, let the people decide. This way flamers can stop flaming, and everyone is happy. Yes I will keep dreaming. I pay for the game too (in fact 3 accounts) so I can make requests just like any other player can.

As you can see in my sig... i'm a fairly decent ranger, i ~do~ range on raids, mainly because I tend to draw agro using melee and i'm too lazy to jolt. So, think about it, high end events, alot of times you gotta get in close, sword is pretty handy for that. Jelvan event for instance, i still just say get in there and melee, look at your aa's, you have flurry aa's and crit increasers. all of my offensives/defensives/casting aa's maxed, and when i'm melee'ing the extra damage from my 4 lifetap procs and self cast proc is pretty good in itself, way better than any bow could produce, i ~should~ have a soulseeker in a month or two and even when i do, i'd still rather melee in groups, if you play in third person mode, you can still have a great understanding of your sorroundings. I actually tank more than i just dps or snare or do watever, and when you get higher end, you'll do alot more tanking/offtanking and be real glad you got a sword, otherwise your bow epic would be wasted, people prefer a ranger willing to smack the mob and create greater dps than one that sits for backup. It isn't old EQ any more, its fast and furious destruction of mobs.

I appreciate the comment, especially from a seasoned Ranger. Guess what though, that's YOUR choice.

CHOICE big word here. I CHOOSE a bow. I want a bow, you want a sword. I don't really care what others want of me. I want what I think makes my character complete..a bow.

This is a game. This is not military warfare. We have to enjoy the game and not succumb to what others want us to be. We play to have fun and be what we want to be. And that is where I think EVERYONE is having an issue. When I play I do it to escape reality for a while and be a bowing ranger, that is what I dream my character to be, and I want to be the best at what at that I can.

You all can dream of being a sword swinging hunter, I choose the bow. When people understand that CHOICE is important and the fact this is a GAME then they can see my point.

What the hell.
Your argument is complete crap. It's the equivalent as if I said that as a druid I want to be able to have a pet that is reasonably usable, because I CHOOSE to use my bear pet, and it should be powerful enough so that I can CHOOSE to use it if I want to play that way.
Listen to what everyone else has said.

A real Ranger is able to make good use of melee to maximize DPS (if your weapons are on par or better than your bow) while maintaining situational awareness. Anyone who uses a bow when their melee weapons have the edge is just lazy (excluding the rare situations; i.e. avoiding an AE but able to stay within bow range), although that's not necessarily a bad thing since I was guilty of that when I used to play. ;)

It's a shame you feel I'm not a "real ranger" in your eyes and BTW..I am FAAAR from lazy, I do keep my surroundings well surveyed at all times.

Sometimes bowing is better. The reason I want an epic bow is to increase the DMG I do from afar so I can avoid having to go in toe-to-toe and loose a better spot protecting the casters. Yes I will still achieve my 2.0 sword and be happy with it. I just feel a bow is more fitting to the style ranger I play.

We are a hybrid for a reason, we are flexible, as should our choices of game style and in turn our weapon.

61 Ranger here, and I agree with this for the most part. But there is a 3rd class of ranger, like myself who use both equally. (It's true honest!) I'm not a very high lvl (61) but my guild's big guns like to take me along because I deal out noticable dmg with my bow OR melee. I am usually fighting along side 68's or better.
I think there should be the option for the bow, BUT if you look at time bows the Epic bows would have to be extremely uber to outclass those.
What I would like to see is more in the way of useful spells, now I can hear the arguements already but I do think Ranger's got the short end of the stick past 65, there's not much there that isn't already been done. It's redundant, why is not Panic Animal replaced? I am a soloer mainly, no choice really on that one. I am on at odd hours, so I personally would like to see more in the way of solo' spells.... but that is just me.

ahh,frustrating...i have been playing ranger for years and now i begin to think it just fair that most other classes hates ranger.everytime someone invited me to a group, i almost feel ashamed that i take one of their spot and doing almost nothing.a second tank, a chanter ,a druid or a mage, all be more useful in a group than a ranger.if they fabled POP the next year, will there be some awesome bows?if not...rangers should just lie down and die.

A) Ranger 2.0 is good being a Melee weapon. Because Am3 got nerfed pre-PoP because it would make the game completely unfair due to the bows that were going to be attainable from progression. (Pre-nerf Am3, Warbow of Zek with best gear in game Vex Thal/Ssrae/ST you could Trueshot a 14k crit. You average hit would be 1-2000 and regular crit for 4-7k) Since it was nerfed we now resort to Melee as the main source as dps. Except if you own an Oakwynd.

B) Rangers are the most gimped class in the game atm. Our Dps/Buffs/Heals are not only weak, but in comparison to any other class its by a landslide.
However, You can solo (Bowkite), you can buff, you can heal, you can track (Legitly).

C) If you want to cry about Epic 2.0/Dps of Ranger, delete you character and Make a Rog/Ber/Mag/Wiz. If you want to cry about gimp buffs, delete your character and make a Cleric/Shaman.

But if you want a class that always brings good times and to enable the greatest Bull$h!t that Everquest can throw at a player just for the class he/she players... Play a Ranger today! :)

P.S. If you havr read this entire book I wrote, you have no life and probably nothing better to do :P J/k... Am I? No? Yes? Hrmmmm. No, I decide im not J/king today.

I dont care if epics are all melee

They can leave everything as is but one "They Nerfed Bow damage"

We ranger here never ment to best at anything. only best at having full skill All weapons we were designed to be

>trackers and utility spells
>back up tanks
>DPS

BUT WE ALWAYS WERE MASTERS OF BOW

why do you think we were only ones to get endless quiver and bow aa's

We rangers did have one thing that none else had and it was ower biggest benefit

BOWS we have melee damage are ranger or 2x damage -- we have Endless arrows.

and they Decided to cap Damage and Put it on a sliding curve

would they do this to Melee, hell no not there pet classes would be hurt. (SK Zerker necros)

they gave everyone ower gifts at bow --- given it helps to have over 75 skill

for all care give everyone the skills ( they did that )
Give them all 2X damage ( they did that )

But done take away ower upper level damage it makes having better higher damgae bows a waste of time..

my 28/25 bow with 13 damage bonus with all my bufs hit for max about 900
my 62/52 bow with 23 damage bonus with all my bufs hits for only 1200
41 damage per hit vs 85 Damage per hit and only 30% more per hit
Should be max 1800+ damage

now in melee you get even damage

if your Damage for weapon and Bonus is 50 and you switch to 100 damage you do even damage of 100% more, not a sliding curve of 30%

used to be the same range or melee they put it on curve long time ago but had everyone else without the 2x bonus and the lower skill.

if they give everyine else upgrades to there bow skill give us back the ONE THING give up back the high end damage, Remove the Sliding cuve it is not right.

why not make is fair and even 2x damage and the rased skills and let those of us with skills and bufs do more damage it si fari and even we did the work

dont punish us for it

Dont give the rest a bonus they will almsot never use and take away what we had to start with
WOW- quit crying.

First off, check your spelling before you hit "post message" next time.

It's true that our melee dps completely owns our bow dps, but that's the way sony made it. And unless sony gives us a 100/30 bow it will always be that way. If you have some of the higher end ratio melee weapons you will be able to out dps bow+TS, making our bows completely obsolete. It sucks they did this to rangers but even so we are in the top 3 best melee dps classes in the game. So it really isn't that bad. I'm an averagely geared ranger (10.3khp, 2.1kac unbuffed, using 1.5/Darkglint) and when I put my heart into it I can out dps rogues at the same level of gear in my guild. I can put out around 350-500dps with melee, depending on the group makeup. 350 without bard/sham, and 500 with both.

So that being said, it sucks, but we have to live with it. Be happy that Sony gave us the best epic 2.0 ratio out of every other class.

I play a ranger and love the fact that she is very versatile. But I also play a Cleric and Duo often with a Ranger in Rss. It seems to me alot depends on personal preference for fighting style. We have rangers who get up close and personal with AMV and some you couldnt pay enough to get them to put there bows away. So I think it is a case of to each thier own.

Ranger's were given dual wield only to hold them over until Trueshot is ready. Once we come down off our high, back 2 melee. Melee now out dps's our bow cuz of outrageous Oow+ weapons. Period.
But now matter what 1H or 2H'ers you get.

Ok, before any jumps on me about this post, let me get something out of the way. I haven't done any research on this at all. I haven't even completed my Epic 1.0. I haven't read through the endless pages of the walkthrough. I haven't even stepped foot into an Omens zone yet. Please keep that in mind when you reply.

I've noticed that some classes are able to have both the Epic 1.0 and the Epic 2.0, such as the Cleric. I have a few general questions.

1) For the Ranger, is the epic 1.0 consumed in the process of creating the 1.5 or 2.0?

2) If so, can I re-do the Epic 1.0 quest and get the results a second time? Would it even be worthwhile?

3) If I were to get the Epic 2.0, would I be able to repeat the process and get the Epic 1.5 for my off hand?

Edit: Spelling, grammar, and rephrasing.

Epic 1.0 is not consumed. Plus they changed it ingame so you can not have both 1.5 and 2.0. Once you have 1.5 most of us rangers only use Earthcaller when we need a slow. There are better weapons easily gotten that are better than 1.0 epics and there are items/augs for the Haste/attack. My Swiftwind is banked and will remain there till needed in my 2.0 epic.

Any ranger that feels that the epic should be a bow are one or more of these:
1- Not a ranger
2- A ranger that isn't geared very well
3- A ranger that didn't play much before Luclin

Rangers were never originally meant to be a ranged dps class. They were originally intended to be a secondary or tertiary tank class. They always did more with melee, until AAs came out that gave them double the damage on archery, and an endless supply of high damage arrows. This coupled even moreso with the elemental bows. Get above the elementals, Time or higher, and melee dps outweighs the ranged by 100% or more. Yes, there are those situations where it's still called for to use a bow while raiding/exping. Stick a berzerker with max Warcry in a group of rangers that all blow TS and watch mobs melt.

Ok, i could not disagree more, anyone that thinks that the ranger epic should NOT be a bow is smoking crack... Even high leaderboard rangers will tell you that if a ranger is in the melee, the ranger is wrong, they were intended to be a ranged DPS class, not another tank. from 50s on all i have done with the exception of farming greens has been done with a bow, either bow kiting, pulling, or ranged dps, so, those of you that are rangers in the melee, remember this, your NOT a tank. And i hope you realize, that if you are tanking, it had better be to give the cleric the extra 0.4 seconds she needs to gate after the warrior dies.

You are a moron. When you get some levels and some "grown up gear" then you should have no problem tanking in alot of places. I can tank easily in MPG and similar zones and I am not anywhere near high end. So open up you mind and ask yourself, would you rather have a 14K ranger with 2400 AC or a warrior with 10K and 1900 AC (which is the kind of warrior I see tanking MPG all the damn time)? Rangers can easily have the HP and AC to be able to tank quite a few places. Were not the best, but we can do it well. If all you can do is forage and ranged dps, then its your own fault not SOE's, and I would prefer if you didnt post on subjects you were completely ignorant about. Thanks guy!

I am a lvl 70 ranger fairly well equiped,(in the top 100 on my server, not that it means much) I by far out dps my bow and can tank RSS even if nessary, we Rangers were ment to be tanks, obviously due to class balance not the same as Plate Tanks but tanks non the same, I have all my Defensive AAs and most of my offensive ones, I can hold aggro better then a lot of tanks. I can pull aggro off casters fast in raid situations and often find myself offtanking mobs.
So to say a ranger is or ever was ment as a ranged DPS class us utter BS, SOE never intended for us to sit safly in the back of raid slinging arrows for max DPS, sure there is situations where this is where we are best used in this capcity and noone else can do near the DPS with thier bows or ranged weaps.

I believe a ranger was meant to be whatever the hell it wanted to be.
If you put all your AAs into defensive and melee abilities, yes, you can tank almost everywhere.
If you put all your AAs into Ranged abilities and max out your DEX, yes, you can do massive DPS with a bow.
It all depends on how people want to play them.

I agree fully with you and with the newer DoD melee disc it gives even less reason to use bow specifictly on named mobs and my faverite thing about that new melee disc is that it is on about half the rouse timer of the TS disc. I am rather glad for the non-bow epic i think it would have took down dps a lot as well as being less desireable for the older rangers granted i do use bow a lot usualy on mobs with bad AE's which keeps a lot more mana in the healers when we can step out of range of the ae and be safe dps

no we are not the best dps in the game but i wouldnt play any other class and trust me i have tried um all, the abilities we have to be safe decent dps with all the skills and spells we get is amazing i feel all classes balence out this game i just wouldnt rather be any other clas myself :)

What is up with all these people trying to make a point to express their feelings and opinions when they clearly need to play EQ less, and learn basic grammer and spelling? How can you expect to hold a solid argument if you come across as an overwhelmingly clueless, english-speaking ignorant?

Go to school.

I think it should also be a sword over a bow, but I got to thinkning.....how about an epic Arrow. I suppose it wouldnt be fair to other classes if we could put an itme in our ammo slot that gave hp/mana/end as well as stats and such. It would still be kind of cool tho

i think the epic 2.0 should be a bow, something like a 52dmg/20dely 340hp+ etc. with a bad *** dot proc like a 600dmg every 6 seconds for 3 ticks, and a clicky that gives u crazy good aim.
plus u would git epic 2.0 graphics on your bow, they could make that bow so bad ***...

Well I cant speak from recent xp, but back in the day of Luclin and PoP raid mobs..Rangers would be the ones to finally kill the mobs. Rangers were usually out of range of AE's and most guilds left them be and didnt worry too much about healing them. Seems senseless to make Rangers become Rogues without the crit/damage output for being up close to mobs that might cast regular AE's.

you are right. if we got an epic bow that did more dps than our current melee dps, Rangers would be way out of balance, too much DPS from too far away.
Choose your weapon...

As regards the sword vs bow debate, how about this idea?

Have an NPC in PoK that you can hand the sword in to, and have it replaced with a bow?

Same stats etc, range 250, with slightly different procs. (Simply have clicky on bow affect ranged attacks instead of melee attacks.)

That way both camps of ranger are happy. :)

P.S. As a side note, always thought SOE should add a ranger AA, Point Blank Shot, simply removes the minimum range and LOS issues that currently plague rangers.
i had a revelation

people began saying that ranger meele out

damages ranger bow... im not goin to disagree,

and here is what i concluded. people were

complaining about no meele related damage discs,

and so the clickie on this weapon is the new

ranger meele disc =)

Reading some of the posts here I have seen, I would like to say a couple things.

1. For those looking for a Ranger Epic Bow, ever researched the Time Bows? Best in Game bows already exceed all epics for damage. That is why SOE has not released an epic bow for rangers.

2. For those questioning why to get this. A. Having Epic 2.0 is a great accomplishment. B. Point me to something better for a ranger, I would like to see it.

As far as I know, there is not anything better for a ranger.
We demand bows !!!

Bows make rangers diffrent form other classes.
We want that in the game.

Use it to our advanage or loose a lot more of us if that is possible.

This might even get some old rangers back.
SOE make a great bow and new upgrades to archery even more Archery AAs.
