Not only it serves as a nice memento to remind you of all your adventures and first buddies as a lowbie, but it's also one of the best light sources you will ever get. Pretty awesome little item considering how early you get it in the game.
Nitramous, this is NOT the frequent drop off of Drovlarg Scavengers for the Monk Shackle---the item of which you speak is the Scarlet Stone!
This item is a frequent drop from Drolvarg Scavengers in Firiona Vie. It is the sulfur stone needed for the Monk shackle of bronze quest.
