HQ Lion Skins
# Apr 19 2004 at 5:28 PM Rating: Default
OK, I have hunted off and on in NK, killing every lion that pops. I had been there about 3 hours other day.A Lv 52 ranger comes into the zone and OOC's to buy HQ Lion Skins. I OOC back that they are a rare drop (playing my 59 Ranger). He says yeah but I thought I would try. I go back to tracking and killing...tracking a HL I get there and this guy got there first. He kills it and OOC's Woot and links the HQ lion skin. I know he has as much right as I do to spawns, but after 3 hours of killing I felt robbed. I did Gratz him but mumbled under my breath hehe. About 2 days before I was killing and the named lion poped 2 times almost back to back. First time he dropped some Lion Skin Leggings that were like newbee legs. Second time he dropped the Perfect Lion Skin. I have been killing everything from Hill Giants to Griffs...I see a lull when they just are not up at all. Still looking to make a Fleeting Quiver..But by the time I finally get a HQ Lion Skin...I might have enough AA's to just have the Never Ending Quiver...and no need for the Fleeting...Well I rambled enough...Good Luck to all on finding the HQ Skins!

Actually, even after you get Endless Quiver, you'll still want to carry a fleeting quiver for the additional bow haste.
No HQ Lion Skins in EK

I too went to EK and killed hundred of matriarchs and rogue lions and no high quality lion skins -- but I did get ruined lion skins. I think the person who added information that matriarchs and rogue lions got confused because of the ruined lion skins it dropped -- thinking that if it drops ruined lion skins it might drop HQ lion skins as well

I have killed a ton of lions (of all types) in EK and have never seen an HQ lion skin.

I have, however, managed to get 3 of them in NK all off "a highland lion". Nothing else. Have yet to attempt to make the quiver tho...

Ahem...let's see where should I start? ... kk... I went to EK and killed so many Matriarchs and Rogue Lions that I was sick of the word lion by the time I got done...to no avail because what did I get...NOTHING. I hunted for like 3 hours a day. So I decided to go to NK for awhile and for the first day I was a little ...um.. not happy. I got nothing. Hardly any highland lions popped and those that did first only dropped HQ cat pelts...I'm mean everything was dropping them, but I wasn't getting what I needed. The 2nd day I got one to drop. I was so happy I stayed but didnt get anything after that. The 3rd day I went, I found what might be just coincidence, but if you also kill willowisps and griffons(awns, and einnes), not only will you get the feathers you want but plats for the various runes, words, and greater lightstones that drop, but more cats appear as well as the highlands. Doing this method, I got 3 HQ lion skin drops. O...I forgot to tell you that I camped the guard tower near the gypsy camp. Not only could I sell there when my inventory got full but the great spire for ports to nexus and the zones were close by. The only time I had probs with finding the lions and lioness was when it got rained and got foggy which it did alot and at night. NEVER not once did I see the swiftclaw after campin the area for 5 days.

I've spent better than 40 hours (spread over months of play) hunting these in N. Karana, and have only managed to become KOS to all cat-type creatures.

I can't wait until I hit the Planes and find the critters there take special interest in me. I'd damn well better have my FQ by then.

I could be mistaken, though I've spent many hours in the past hunting and have only found HQ Lion Skins (Used to make fleeting quiver) in North Karana from the highland lions. They drop about 1 in 20, If you're tracking and know the 6 or so spawn locations then you should be able to get about 3 every 2 hours on average. I've collected about 20 in the past. They sell for 100-1K in the bazaar.

Just a warning, 1 in 20 is an average, I've gotten 3 out of 4 or 5 before and also have gone for like 6-7 with none (while others were track/farming).

Hope this helps...

This page says that there are other lions who drop this, the Matriarch and Rogue in Ek and Swiftclaw in NK. Has anybody ever seen one of these skins drop from any of these creatures besides the Highland Lion?

In about April 2004, I was in east karana with my 65 Ranger questing this item and it took me about 20min. i killed a lion matriarch and it dropped. Now, they jacked with the drops so only the highland lion in NK drops it (EXTREMELY RARE!) I have hunted about 20 hours for another so I could set my War buddy up with one. I personnaly think the removed it from the drop list and just dont realize it. I have seen one in bazaar in the last few weeks selling for 3k on Bristlebroke server. Anyhow GL to ya Rangers - I got my Epic "Swifty" recently and with the Fleeting quiver, I average around 550 HP damage every 1 second or so - damn i love being a ranger!!!!!! hehe! btw, my bow is the Obsidianwood compound bow that i bought for 54k but they now are selling for around 40k - go figure!

I have spent many many MANY hours farming in EK (for various items silks and cat pelts to name a few). I never got a HQ lion skin there. Bear in mind I only killed the rogue lion a few times. I've only gotten them in NK and only on a rare occasion from highland lions. Only killed Swiftclaw once but it did drop. Spent a lot of hours there too but not nearly as much as EK. Sometimes they drop once per day when I go there yet other times I can go for days and not have any drop. Price accordingly - rare drop if not worse.

Feel free to blame my schematics on bad luck.

The only advice I can give is "kill placeholders." I'm not entirely sure what they are, since it's not a single-player game and so it's hard to control what other people kill. Just don't rely on other people to kill the PHs for you (unless you like boredom).

The first drop I got was when I ran my 51 druid to the guard tower to port someone after an OOC. They were fighting a griffine, and after healing and snaring, I turned 90 degrees and wacked a Highlands Lion who just appeared. After the loot, and celebration, I ported and buffed that toon to the nines! Must be karma, I said, and then (stupidly) tried the combine with 158 tailoring. THAT didn't work.

So, back to the drawing board. The few theories I've formed revolve around "Lions are cats" and "Griff[on/awn/ine]s look kinda like cats, a little". I killed both -- it helped that regular cats drop pelts that translate (currently on Vazalle) into 29pp a padding in the bazaar, and I would get some XP off the odd Griffon. For a few hours, I targeted wisps, and the drop rate on the lightstones paid reasonably enough. Finally (and sorry, I don't remember after what) the second dropped, and I bucked up and found a GM tailor for the combine. One happy alt later, I bid farwell to North Karana.

So my advice is, find other mobs to kill while looking for the Highlands -- something that will be profitable even if you don't loot exactly what you're after. The more I play it, the more I believe EQ is an exercise in multi-tasking, and arranging things so that if one part fails, at least something else succeeds well enough to guarentee fun and enjoyment.

i've been hunting these for days now and i have so far spent 15 hours and have only looted MQ lion skins and lion meat so that strikes me as the item beeing pretty rare... considering that i have killed more than 50. as for pop time they dont seem to pop on a set time... there will be a pop of 1 or 2 and then nothing for 40min sometines and when those die there will be another pop about 20 min later. as for price they sell for 800pp to 1,200pp in bazaar on prexus.

Last month when I hunted for a HQ Lion Skin for a Fleeting quiver it took me almost 12 hours to find one. But yesterday and friend and I decided to go harvest some cat pelts for tailoring and within five minute three Highland Lions appeared almost on top of us. We each took one and then joined forces for the last one and looted 2 HQ Lion Skins from two of the three corpses. =D
    Place holders?
    # May 11 2003 at 4:16 AM Rating: Decent
After paying 700pp for a HQ lion skin I decided to go back to NK and spend some time killing lions. I kill every lion I see, as I still need cat skins for my tailoring and meat for baking. Initially I found about 3 Highland Lions right off, and yes they were around the center of the zone. While watching track I notices a Hill Giant that cons yellow to my 33 Ranger so I decided to go for some exp while waiting for the next HL to show up. Ok so I kill the HG pretty easy and go back to the lions while my health builds back up. I kept doing this for maybe 2 hours or so and ended up killing 4 HG and about 20 HLs before getting a HQ lion skin. I also killed all the other lions I found. During my last HL kill, after getting the HQLS, something interesting happened. I had been watching track and did a cancel and refresh and boom a HL topped the list. I turn around and there it is at a distance of maybe 50 and just standing there. I think it had just popped and hand not started running yet, since I had been tracking and didnt see it before. I killed it and then started recasting some buffs and practicing my HIDE before starting off again and then BANG a Hill Giant pops right on top of me!? I killed the HG and then made note of the location. Maybe things went so smoothly hunting the HGs and the HLs because they share the same spawn point / are place holders?? Ran out of time but plan on going back this week to the location and trying to verify if there really is a connection. Anyway it was a great day. The HGs dropped between 17pp and 40pp but a lot of it is gold, silver and copper so be prepared. I also ended up with over a stack of High Quality Cat pelts, a stack of Medium Quality Cat pelts, and almost a stack of lion meat and of course the HQ lion skin and other loot from the HGs. I even had one Highland lion drop 4 skins and meat! Yup, thats right 5 items from one lion, 1 HQ, 2 MQ and a ruined. All the other times they had anywhere from nothing to 2 items on them and once or twice they had 3 items. I had NEVER seen 4 skins at once before!! I will update later.

    Happy hunting!
    Tad

    HQ Lion Skin
    # May 10 2003 at 1:39 PM Rating: Decent
A friend and I hunted for one of these killing every Highland Lion in NK for just over twelve hours before getting one. On the Prexus server there were two selling in the bazaar; one for 1k and the other for 2k. Good luck to anyone whom is trying to get one.
    Rare ?
    # Oct 09 2002 at 6:35 PM Rating: Decent
Killed about 15 Highland Lions in NK and got one after 40 mins. Got many MQ, LQ, Ruined Cat Pelts.

Most Highland Lions seem to hang out around the tower/gipsy camp area, but they spawn as far the Spires.

Lion Skins are YELLOW, Cat Pelts are BROWN.

After 40 mins not a Highland Lion in sight, looking for place holders.

Found no clear place holder, best bet is to just kill everything to make Highland Lion pops.

Grizzly bears, Willowisps, a few beetles...

The main problem here is not rarity. 1 HG Skin out of 10-15 Highland Lion is far from rare. The main problem here is to get the Highland Lions to spawn because after you start to hunt them there will be only one on track every once in a while...

    RE: Rare ?
    # Oct 14 2002 at 8:51 AM Rating: Good
As a level 49 Ranger, I hunted these for HQ skins to make fleeting quivers. My tracking skill was such that I could track most of the zone from the center of it. As far as I could tell the Highland lion spawn was a timed spawn (no placeholders). Usually 3 to 4 Highland lions would spawn almost simultaneously (occaisionally 1 or 2 more would spawn after the initial group). After tracking and killing each of these, there would be a time span of 20 to 30 minutes (I did not time it exactly) then the cycle would repeat. Whether the zone was full of players (and beetles, lions, and griffawns were being killed steadily) or the zone was empty of people, the spawn rate didn't seem to change. Your estimate of 1 HQ pelt per 10-15 Highland lions seems about right.

I eventually got ten HQ lion skins and cornered the market on fleeting quivers, only to find that they did not sell as well as I thought. Oh well, another great plat making scheme down the drain.

I also found that the Highland Lions didn't seem to have a placeholder. As my ranger friend and I sat in NK (her track covers zone, my poor little druid track cover a goodly chunk), the HL's spawned from time to time without any killing going on in zone. I did occasionally kill griffons and the HG, but even when we went AFK for groceries and dinner they continued to spawn (with me popping in every 20 min or so to kill any that had spawned). I got 1 HQLS in about 20 HL kills.

I did, however, get lucky in that at one point a shaman/warrior team ran through NK, and killed an HL I had been tracking down. I never saw them, but only other toons in zone and the HL disappeared from track. They were gone from zone in another minute. As I medded in the gypsy camp, I checked the merchants, and sure enough, 1 HQ Lion Skin for sale, 3GP and change, with 55 Charisma.

I've looted 2 of these in NK. However, I've never been able to find a buyer. I'm not a tailor, but have made some decent money selling HQ bear and cat pelts. However, after Luclin was released I didn't get any interest whatsoever in HQ skins or pelts from bears, cats or Lions from other players.

Where did all of the tailors go?

Ultra Very Rare even. I have hunted lions for along time with several toons for the HQ CAT skins to help get my talioring up. I have never seen a HQ LION skin. I have talked to sereral others on my server and all facts point to the following.
THey drop only off the Highland lions in NK. No on my server has ever that I know of gotten one from any other zone.
Maybe with this new quest they are going to start dropping in other zones. We can but hope.

HQ's are used to make fleeting quivers, as well as for the lionskin glove quest. Does anyone know what good the LQ and MQ -- and the Ruined are?
