The listing is more likely to come from the Centaurs in
South Karana than it is from the Gnolls.

Considering what era the Gnolls are in and how weak
this bow is nowadays nobody probably bothered to update.

I'm posting because I'm into old world content and this
is one of the best bows in the Classic era.

Pretty rare

Seen him once in a total of 30 hours roughly. Seen his team mate Kroldir once too.

Coloth was blue to a 46 Ranger and hit Hard also resisted one Root.. so be careful. He didnt drop the bow for me.

He seemed to pop on track after I killed a undead cyclops.

I just spent several days camping in Lfay, getting the crap kicked out of me by Equestrielle and the brownies waiting for Whimsy Larktwitter to pop with no luck. I broke down and went to bazaar to look for the Larktwitter Bow, but ended up buying a Trueshot instead. I hope the centaurs aren't as difficult to find as Whimsy.

The named Cents are a long wait. perhaps on the order of once per every other day, unless you are clearing the whole zone so as to force a quillimane spawn. Best chance, simply bind yourself nearby and every time you die, just run across the bridge into South Karana and sweep the zone while tracking for them .. until your group's cleric rezzes you and you go back to your group. Same method as Stormfeather in IC.

If you are soloing it, I have found the named cents in the southern half of the zone 4 out of 6 times, although they do move arounds a lot (too many days spent helping mage friends with Quillimane ...)

Bows dropped 100% of the time

Happy hunting dear
-------------------------

P.S -- these chaps hit rather hard and are underconned for their level. You will require help until you are about level 53ish. After that it is a safe solo

Saw him once, killed him once, got the bow. If ya need it and your on Tarew Marr, give me a tell and I'll sell it to you for 400pp. He's pretty tough to solo and resists snare completely. I was able to root him and blow him to kingdom come though. He still smacked me around a bit before I could get a root off on him.

i was in unrest when sum of our group died in the basement in the Garanel room. we asked for the help of a lvl 52 druid. so being the nice gu he said yes. the surivors waited at zone entrance while the druid goathered corpses. then when he had them all at zone line he looked at my equioment and saw i had a crappy hunting bow so he offered me a choice of 2 bows. one was the runed oak bow and i cant remember the other one. so i saw the stats on it and took it ) ut then a week later a guildie needed a good bow (i am a ranger lvl 33 atm and i rarely use bows lol) so i offerd her this 1. i ended up taking 225 pp for it (

Coloth Meadowgreen
# Mar 28 2002 at 11:35 PM Rating: Decent
I've killed Coloth a few times. He's level 35 and very tough for his level. He has high magic resist and runs very fast. Don't try to solo him at 35. You'll die or get him to half health before you have to zone and let someone else have an easyish kill.

As far as I'm aware he has a random spawn point. He used to be seen daily (sometimes even hourly) but he is much rarer these days. You may end up waiting days for him to appear, and you won't be the only one waiting!

The bow is dropped on average 30-50% of the time, so you have a 1 in 2 to 1 in 3 chance of getting one.

As far as the lower level guy is concerned I've never seen him so can't comment on him or whether he drops the bow. It seems a very good bow for a lvl 20 drop.
Good luck

I spent a LONG while in SK looking for either of these two and haven't had any luck. Of course, I haven't had any luck spotting many of the other 'rares' in that zone either...mebbe i'm just looking in the wrong places.
spawn time
# Nov 06 2001 at 1:03 PM Rating: Decent
I just want to know what the spawn time is for the ones that drop the Runed Oak bow? Was there for ever and none popped. Someone said they have been in SK for 6 months and have only seen him once..
Bow and Mob

I find the bow pretty nice. I was using a rough darkwood, and in DL at least, the mobs were so far away that they would run away from me when i hit them from a distance. So the slightly shorter range is not a problem for me. Plus the speed of the runed oak is much easier to like...

As for the mob that drops it, conned yello to my 35 druid, but beware... he has SoW. and since he uses a bow, dot kiting is next to impossible. I came across him and snare didnt hold... was running far enough to recast, turned and there he was hitting me for 90s. Had just got into the zone and instead of gate.. .had nk port loaded... needless to say did not survive with anything except a lesson... hah.

Suffice to say, if you dont have the hp or mana to nuke him, think twice before popping him.

Good came from it though, Soop was sitting in sk at the time so i logged him on to kill the guy, but I could not find him... was looking for corpse and someone gave me the bow off the cent...

ALWAYS good to see that there are a few nice ones still around.

Good hunting. =)

Sold it today to a very friendly bard named Azuria. Ended up selling for 400pp, Black Chitin Leggings, and a Stilletto of the Bloodclaw. Makes me fell bad that I bought it for only 35pp.

Ratios for bows
# Jun 28 2001 at 5:26 AM Rating: Default
Keep in mind when calculating the ratio for bows that you need to add in the damage for the arrows. So 10/20 is much much better than 50/100. I'd rather have the shaped compound darkwood. I don't think its worth upgrading, though, since I already have a trueshot. Then again if you're spending a plat an arrow to go after the ghoul messanger, you'd be better off with this than the darkwood.
great dmg

The highest dmg fletched arrows in the game. Low rng.

what are "dungeon arrows" just arrows that drop off mobs/uber fletched that have high damage?
Runed Oak
# May 12 2001 at 12:02 PM Rating: Default
I don't think it's really worth 1k... it doesn't do magical damage, I was dissapointed. The smaller model of a Compound Darkwood is a little bit better I think, almost the same if not better damage ratio, and somewhat greater range too. Coloth isn't that tough, but not sure it's worth the work.

Hey Khirith, are you sure you're talking about the right darkwood? There are two types most people use, and they're both pretty good.

It's a good bow, but make sure if you're buying or selling one that you know it doesn't do magic damage without those expensive arrows anyway.

Got the bow too

My lvl 40 partner and I killed Coloth 3 days ago, and he dropped the Runed Oak Bow. Coloth conned even to me at 36.
Not worth what they pay
# Mar 27 2001 at 2:45 PM Rating: Default
I see an awful lot of people selling and buying this bow for about 1kpp or more. This is under the impression this bow does magical damage... it doesn't. As far as I've even experienced, you are still required to use expensive silvertipped arrows to hit targets that require magical weapons to hit. Afterall you are not clubbing the mob with the bow... it is the arrow that hits it. Sure, it's not a bad bow... in comparison with crafted bows, it's superior to any of the oak class... but NOT to a compound darkwood. I could see paying 400pp for a bow of it's caliber, but certainly not over a thousand plat.

So buyers beware... A compound darkwood has superior stats, as well as better range, and only will cost 750pp at the highest. Most sell it for 650pp now. It may be a better investment.
RE: Not worth what they pay

I wanted to make a few comments related to this thread.

First, yes, its always the arrow that determines if you are doing magical damage, which is common sense if you think about it .... the arrow is hitting the mob, not the bow.

Second, I also agree that range should be taken into account as well as ratio, if you can hit a mob farther away, you are more likely to get off multiple shots before it closes to melee. This is not as important if you can snare but its still an issue.

Third, the price quoted above for shaped darkwood compound bows is too low, IMO. As a grandmaster fletcher (skill 202), the shaped darkwood compound bow is still insanely hard to make. Its not unusual to fail multiple times on darkwood, and since the materials to make the bow in question costs around 300pp (a lot depends on CHR and faction), IMO 650pp is unrealistically low for that bow. 800pp seams more reasonable to me.

It's the arrows, not the bow, that determines wether or not magical damage is inflicted. This bow will do magical damage with the right arrows, just like any other bow.

Uhm, Runed oak bow is slightly better than the compound shaped darkwood... Ratio for CDW is 0.463; RO is 0.488
RE: Not worth what they pay
# Jun 04 2001 at 7:10 AM Rating: Decent
But the range is less, and that has to be taken into consideration when deciding what bow is best. BUT, this bow does have a better dam/del ratio then any bow that can be made, including the Trueshot Longbow, which has a slightly worse dam/del ratio then the Shaped Darkwood Compound Bow.

I have killed this guy numerous times in SK while running through and most times he has ahd the runed oak bow. you take no faction hits for killing him, and he has slightly higher hps than the centaur chargers. Highly MR as well. Not too difficult to kill past lvl 40 or so. (=
Got the bow
# Feb 14 2001 at 10:36 AM Rating: Decent
I was lvl 24 SK camping the spires when a named centaur came up and the group killed it. I looted and got the runed oak bow. The mob was blue to me so it must have been another named npc.
