Personally I think the Blessed Faydark Thunderbolt is a much better bow, and only a recommended level of 20

You couldn't be more right....My ranger on Bristlebane has the Thunderbolt and it's AWESOME!! MUCH better than this stupid piece of junk. I don't understand the mentality of the SOE people. They create Quests that are great at first then they nerf them so most people won't bother with them....That's just stupid. No wonder so many are leaving the game and servers are merging. Note to SOE: People play role-play games to be entertained. It's supposed to be a fantasy world where we can escape the problems of RL. Stop turning the game into a Chat Room for morons. Like the idiots who cheat by "boxing"(multiple accounts+computers),or get PLed to max level then moan and groan that they're bored. BOO-HOO! Don't cater to them. Get the game back to people who like soloing, questing, and just having fun. This current trend is killing the game.

Technically, they didn't nerf anything. The Rain Caller quest, in its inception, was an epic weapon quest, after a sort. It was the best bow available to rangers, at the time.

However, as new expansions were released, new items that were bigger and better came about, and obviously replaced previous items. Hell, end-game gear from the original world isn't even considered good enough to be called twink gear for a fresh character, anymore (as is evident with this bow, even). The point of the matter is that at one point in time, not only was this "the sh*t", but it was what was available. That's like hitting max level, and then complaining Rusty weapons are taking up valuable item space because they're worthless. The problem is that in creating new, valid content, old content will become...dismissable. It's still a great quest, and maybe the reward isn't worth it since you can just toss a bit of plat at someone in the Bazaar for something that's exponentially better, stat-wise, but the real reward of doing a quest is the feeling of accomplishment you get when you hold the item, knowing you worked for it. Whether holding it is to stuff it in your bank, or to equip it is up to you. :P

Everything has its place...before you bash an item, you should consider the era it came from...talking about it 6 years after the fact doesn't mean it was ALWAYS a "stupid piece of junk."

Yes, they did nerf the bow itself (by changing the proc to a charged clicky)...beyond lacking sufficient reason for doing so, technically, it wasn't a nerf to anyone but those on the progression servers, anyway (since, obviously no one is going to use this on any other server). Maybe they felt the bow was too powerful in its original design, but never bothered changing it by the time they decided it should be, since it had already become outdated because it was a "stupid piece of junk".

The Thunderbolt is a great bow, yes, but...apples and oranges, my friend.
Apples and oranges.

excellent response.

The other thing to consider, is while new expansions come out, the appeal to many people is that equipment that was at one time excellent becomes gimp when they add better equipment that is easier to get.

The first rule of creating an expansion is that you must make it appealing so it will sell. What's appealing about newer and newer expansions? I can get better gear than the last expansion at half the work for it.

Does it ruin the game? In my opinion yes. Does my opinion matter? No. Money matters and that's why gear is the way it is.

Maybe all the rangers should band together and demand they switch it back. Let's face it save for the stat bonuses this bow has become rather worthless for the level it takes to get it.

Why get it.

Burning arrow does DD120 and during Discipline True Shot doubles, cast Eagle Eye before hitting Discipline and bow 2 or 3 times before getting into the fray. I notice the DD drops on this bow: after 2 - 3 shots. My trueshot takes up space in my bank. I will not upgrade it to raincaller and loose 5 charges.

Archery
# Jan 09 2003 at 10:35 AM Rating: Excellent
Just my 2 cp to add to the archery discusiion. I spent 40 levels being nothing more than a low HP Warrior. Finally descided that maybe archery is a skill i should have. I am currently maxed at 216 (lvl54) and do crits ranging from 194-342 (most of 300+ are on greenies) Without this added dimention, i surely wuld have died several times, as well as getting my group killed. I notice that higher HP mobs go down faster with me shooting and pally/warrior group-mates whacking. There are definately times when i need to step in and take a little agro, but its usually at the end of a big fight against a named mob, when the healer is low on mana and the tank is getting close to emptying out that red bar. Ranger players are always complaining that the class is nerfed, or dosent get the specialty skills that others do. Thats completely untrue, i was soloing frosties at lvl 46 in GD. Root and shoot baby......mele when you need to. Its important to learn all of a rangers capabilities. A little tougher to do then it is to mem a few spells, need to be a thinker to be a ranger.......just my opinion, and I do believe that my ranger is my favorite character

So far, my melee still outperforms my archery by far. I'm using snowchipper in main and swifty in secondary. Bow is a steelshaft compound. The thing that's a thorn in my craw about archery is that archery is a class defining attribute for Rangers. We are the only class that has to wait to 59 to really shine in something that is inherent in the class. Imagine if a cleric had to wait to 59 to rez someone?

Naggy?

51 rng here with maxed out Archery skill. High Fletching skill and making some really nice Silver tipped arrows(translation:magic damage) and I'm wondering if it might be a smart, cleric friendly, idea for me to stand back and stick that dragon like a pincushion. Got a tailored quiver also to reduce delay. This should keep me well out of Nagafens AE range of fire(and with awesome luck fear) which is the main thing that kills me, other than drawing too much aggro and getting the triple claw hits.

Sounds like a good idea to me specially when I hit for 50+ and crit for around 100. Still doing my part and may not gain aggro. I still have my twin lammy's to melee IF i can burn 140 arrows before he drops.

Can I get some feedback here?

RE: Naggy?
# Oct 30 2002 at 11:54 PM Rating: Default
Rain Caller is too slow to be your main source of damage, tailored quiver isn't much haste at all. Twin Lammys? Why? you get no damage bonus in secondary, so you need a heavy hitter there, not fast. Fast in primary, damage dealer in secondary dude.

You wanna be a mainly archery based Ranger? Wait till ya make 60, get a real bow, got Endless Quiver AA, a fleeting quiver, a collection of bane dmg, and high damage arrows to switch out for each situation, Trueshot AA, max out your bow skills, then holla back. Until then, get in there as secondary melee and suck it up man. Get a Tox axe for primary, and a good heavy hitter for secondary, duel Lammy is big no no.

I agree with the other people who replied to your post, you will either A) get summoned. or B)you will get cussed out majorly for not getting up there in the fray. I suggest getting a fleeting quiver and shooting him maybe 2 times while on the way and see if you cant get aggro afore the main tank does so you can keep him alive that extra second do some more damage.. just my 2cp

think man, this is a naggy raid..... you are there to do as much damage as you can and die. if you don't die (naggy is easy, you shouldn't) then lucky you. melee damage will be a lot higher than bow damage.
RE: Naggy?
# Oct 27 2002 at 1:59 PM Rating: Decent
If you say that, you have no idea what a ranger is :p Their damage with a bow are impressive, much more than melee, with their disciplines.
RE: Naggy?
# Nov 12 2002 at 9:29 PM Rating: Good
actually, i think he does.. rangers get the trueshot disc at 55, and their luclin archery AAs at 59+. that is too high for a naggy raid. believe it or not, pre-55 rangers do very poor damage with their bows when compared to their melee.
RE: Naggy?
# Dec 21 2002 at 8:05 PM Rating: Decent
Well, to add my 2cp, you're incorrect, Kishin. At 52, I pretty much hung up my melee, (as long as I have a good haste on and dex buffed up), and only shoot arrows. I have tolan's bracer for endlees 3 dmg arrows, and use a compound steelshaft bow. My damage is better than my melee, (jagged blade of mourning/schimitar of ethereal energy), and I take no aggro. I'm not saying that everyone can/should do this, nor am I saying that's the only way I play. However, I fight with my own guild mostly, and I'm not gonna stand back and let anyone die if I'm needed to melee. With max dex, chanter haste plus my hangman's noose (atm .. trying for better, now) I can do some pretty good damage at lvl 53. Max crit so far has been 297, usually crit 5 times or better in a fight, I'd say average bow damage per shot probably comes out to 125 or so. I'm just guessing, I've not parsed, but I know the damages I do. Lot's of 60 - 100 shots, with crits anywhere from high 100s throughout the 200's. So .. yes, rangers can do good bow damage way before lvl 55. And, it's not always just about all the damage you can do .. if I'm not having to be healed, that means others can be. I still melee when needed, but I know when that time is. Now .. to get my EQ, AM3, Trueshot disc, 40% haste of my epic ... :D stand back and see the pincushion.
RE: Naggy?
# Jan 12 2003 at 11:18 PM Rating: Decent
When I was killin Naggy I never gave a damn about shooting arrows I just wanted to out dmg the rest of the folks there to kill it too, I agree Lammy + Lammy = No No, I still use my Tox axe or my frostbringer main and before swiftwind i used a Club of the ice ocean or defenders light blade. And even with the true shot disc I prefer my melee over my bow dmg, because dammit im a ranger and I was put here in norrath to root park and get deaded trying to tank :P HAHAHA

Also, every Solusek Ro quest I completed to get Lambent armor specified Gold . . I did it with Plat each time and never failed to get the amor I was questing for . . .I'm certainly willing to bet this is the same way, and as soon as my Baby Ranger gets to the point he can turn in his Trueshot for this little upgrade, I'll be sure to try it with Platinum as well . . .

I'll never forget that kind of generosity whilst playing this game. Nor will I sell it (I've had some pretty nice offers). Well met, Arfur.

The Quest
# Apr 16 2002 at 4:19 PM Rating: Default
OK I did this quest at lvl 31, needed some guild back up for the mermaid but the rest was pretty easy, the Hulking gorillas spawn about 1 in 6 kills with about a 10-15 minute spawn time at the entrance to Cazic in the Feerot, the Tae Ew will not assist the Gorillas but they will heal them, and some seem to do full heals I had one down to almost dead 5 times and had to zone and come back to kill him. The hardest <read worst and most boring> part was the Faerie Princess I spent 6 hours my first day 3 my second and finally on my third RL day she popped up would not answer any of my questions but I gave her the wing and she gave me the gold dust, then I got my bow. So if you are gonna do this quest order a pizza and get a good book, and be ready to wait for a VERY long time to see that annoying Princess Joleena.

The second night i pulled them out past the base of the ramp and out of the range of the lizzy healers, killed them with no problems, got the hairs after 4 kills.

But there is an exploit involving a coorperative NPC merchant that recharges stuff.

I have recharged my Rain Caller.

You need a Deluxe Tool Box, and a Mana Battery for each charge that you want to put on the bow.

Example: If you used all 5 charges up, then you need Deluxe Tool Box, your Rain Caller, and 5 mana batteries. Deluxe Tool Box, and the Mana Batteries, can be bought at iglo vendors in IceClad Ocean. I charged mine by placing the bow and one battery at a time in the deluxe tool box. You can try more then one at a time if you like, but I did not want to chance it.

Also, you can take your fully discharged bow (all 5 charges used) back to Kinool Goldsinger in Felwithe Enchanter Guild, and simply repeat the "Enchanted TrueShot Longbow" quest which also will recharge the bow.

# Oct 15 2002 at 12:50 PM Rating: Decent
I have NOT recharged my Rain Caller.

First, you don't say what kind of mana battery we need. Anyway, I've tryed to recharge it.

I got the Deluxe Tool Box from gnome igloos at Iceclad Ocean, also 1 or more mana battery of all types (class 1 - 11pp, up to class 5 - 52pp).

I put my Rain Caller, and a mana battery class 1 into the Deluxe Tool Box, and "You can't combine this items in this container type" message apears. Ack! :( . I did same for all types of mana battery from class 1 to class 5. Any battery works. ¿I'm doing something wrong?

Also, I have tryed several combos of mana batteries types and quantities, and any was sucssesfull.

I have seen other posts in other forums saying same or similar thing you say here, but, the fact is that I can't recharge my bow :( .

The Key master in Plane of Sky, sells a box with only 2 slots, and, also, mana batteries. Next time I get into Sky, I will purchase that box and try the combine.

¿Thinkering skill is needed?¿Some kind of mana battery I haven't seen nor purchased? ¿May be any specific container, like the box of Key Master, or a Fier'Dal fletching kit? I don't know. Please if anybody could help...

Rangers can't tinker, of course tinkering skill is needed. Gnomes tinker dude. mana battery is sold, or at least was last time I checked, same place as deluxe toolbox, by...Gnomes.

I don't use Rain Caller anymore gave it away when I got Nightmarewood.

Was trivial for my gnome tinkmaster at 206 tinkering skill...or at least that's when it started saying "You can't increase you tinkering skillz doing this crap no moe main, do summin' else nah"

The Squad ring you get in RV for becoming "one with the wall" has one charge of healing and IS rechargable. The 80 point heal is a lifesaver at low levels but pretty useless later. (It did save me from a DOT once at 37)

# Jan 12 2003 at 11:31 PM Rating: Decent
I know with some items you simply sell it to a vender and buy it back for like 10x what its worth and will have a recharged item. There's a 96% rez stick out there that you do this with, however 10x its worth doesn't exsist, cause you can't put a price on free rez's you did as yourself as a monk yakno? :P

ok i am currently lvl 50 and tested my bow on Tarbul Earthstrider in EK while waiting for my guild to arrive to kill Vance Bearstalker for my Call of Flame Quest. He is the perfect target cus he wont die after u pump enough arrows to kill 4HGs. well i snared his big butt and pumped about 15 stacks of summoned arrows (i love my tolan's bracer) into him. i raised my archery from 112 to 150 in that round. with my skill at 150 and 140dex i was able to land several 103dam crits on him. i didnt have my archery buffs on either so it can prolly be a bit higher than that.

Princess Joleena has not been taken out of Lfay, and Lfay has not been changed. Lfay is just like Kithicor Woods, normal during the day, with undead stuff roaming around at night. She spawns like this:

She has a PH "a fairie guard" which is in front of the house with Gearheart from the hours of 8PM to 8AM the guard will despawn at 8PM and respawn at 9PM she will remain there from 9PM till 8AM when she will again despawn, at 9AM either the PH "a fairie guard" or the princess herself will spawn. I got lucky and arrived at about 6PM, at 9AM the next morning Princess Joleena herself spawned, gave her the wing, and got "pouch of gold dust", took the dust, my trueshot bow, treant heart, and 3000GP to Kinool Goldsinger in Felwithe and got my Rain Caller.

LFay was indeed changed for a while -- Cazic Thule corrupted the area, and it was far worse than the night-time Kithicor; it was later returned to its original state, with Equestrielle the Corrupted being the only remnant of the touch of the Faceless.

i got mine lastnight. i found some friends in Intrinsic sense at the druid ring in BB. they said they were headed to kedge, so i tagged along. got down there and fought different fish and mermaids and then went to the golden haired's room. killed the ph once and then she spawned. i got the hair and did some porting/running around and finally got the bow. got killed by equestrile the corrupted in Lfay. just means i have a new mob to add to my "mobs to get revenge on" list. it was clear after killing dragoon zytl in WC, it's got a new member now. i'll go back and get my revenge on that horse. anyway after getting my corpse and logging for the night, i go back the next day and princess joleena is there, run to her get the wing then to Felewith and get the bow, WOOT. anyway thanks to the guys from intrinsic sense that let me join them in kedge. thanks to Danadek who stayed in the room with the mermaid and helped kill the fish that spawns in there with her. That was however with the help of an almost lvl 60 mage in Kedge Keep who was bored and looking for Phinny to spawn so his guild could take it down. So yes, on account of the Golden Mermaids Lock of hair this takes about lvl 45 to get, she is a we bit rare. She was white at 40 and her room also has a blue at 40 pirhana in it. Kedge Keep is a mean zone if your low lvl. Wait a few lvls or buy it. 2 Blue from 45 =) will surpass my 45 mage very soon, and have 192 skill in archery too =).
