An Enchanters Trueshot Story
# May 22 2001 at 9:26 PM Rating: Excellent

I started fletching about a week ago and now I'm at 206 skill!
I read some of the reports about why not to do this as anything but a ranger, but as an enchanter I want to be able to make cool stuff.
It's paid off well so far.
I'm a 21st level high elf enchanter with an int of 170.
I started off by going to websites for info on fletching.
There is a lot of good info on how to do it the cheapest way so I won't repeat that all.
I had about 150pp on me when I started.
I stuck to using 3 cheapest items and stepping up the 4th.
I sold all my arrows back to the vendor.
When dealing with an arrow vendor I used illusions to match races with the vendor and benevolence to jack up my faction.
This may be why it worked so well as an enchanter
Manufactured arrows sell back for about what you can sell em for, but you lose money on every failure.
If you use the cheapest component you are not trivial with, you minimize the monetary expense of your losses, and you maximize your success rate so you have as many to sell back as possible.
With a 170 int, I found I was skilling up with every few attempts.
I hit master, 100 skill about 3 hours later, and was only down 20pp from where I started.
Tried making my first bow at 100. I think it was elm and silk. made the bow for about 20pp and sold it for 40pp.
Took a while to sell, and not many inquiries so I figured I'd skill up more.
I was fletching in east commonlands between the 2 orc camps, and I'd auction every once in a while trying to sell some of the arrows I was making.
Only sold about 2 stacks the whole time, and those I was pretty much letting go at cost.
I kept making arrows till 175 skill. Stopping because I ran out of money.
Down to about 30pp and a 4 stacks of materials was costing me 50pp
I read some online accounts of people making trueshot bows, so I figured I'd give it a try.
My previous character was a dwarf, so I knew about Tumpy, and Trantor Everhot. finding them wouldn't be a problem.
I'd done the quest for the Stein of Moggok, so I knew where kiola nuts were.
Lanterns are in the inn by the south gate in WFP
Jyle Wyndshot didn't like me much but I used benevolence on him, and used an illusion to match races. On my first attempt giving him a lantern he gave me the treent heart. I liked the faction hits I was getting from Jyle and lanterns only cost a few coppers, so I made 3 trips with full bags to get treent wood. By the end my faction with Jyle improved to the point I didn't need the illusion any more.
I realized later that the wood weighs 1.0 each, and I was carrying around 60 worth in wt. a real problem for a weakling enchanter.
I hopped on the boat bound for Kaladim.
At the first stop I jumped ship early and raced for the first hut. The girl on the left sells kiola nuts. I bought all my inventory would fit. and raced to catch the boat before it left. At the dock I stopped to bind myself to the site. The boat pulled out before my spell finished DOH! Time to break out the fishing pole.
In Kaladim I went to Tumpy and asked about the quest to refresh my memory.
I gave him 1 water and 1 nut for as many nuts as I had. Which was somewhere around 30. I took the Tumpy's Tonics to Trantor Everhot. Trantor has 2 places he likes to hang out. You can get him to give you wire in both places. the first is in front of Everhot forge where he plays guard and chases down rats.
The second is a little harder to find. There's an empty building just north of the forge, and a tunnel to the east leading up to Grey Bloom farms. Trantor heads up there every once in a while to hang out.
He wants the tonics 2 at a time, but I tried giving him 1, he says "only 1?" but if you give him 1 more, he remembers and gives you dwarven wire.
I got as much wire as I could.
Another enchanter bonus, I gated back to the island where the nuts were.
I bought as many nuts as would fit in inventory. I only had to wait a few minutes to catch the next boat to butcherblock.
I repeated a few times figuring I'd want as much wire as I had wood.
not true.
Heres something you won't find on trueshot quest lists.
your shopping list
1 treent wood
1 small lantern
2 dwarven wire
4 tumpy's tonics
4 kiola nuts 4water
1 spiderling silk
2 microservo's
1 planing tool

as you can see, I needed more wire than wood, but it really didn't matter I had enough wire to make 30 bows.
Off to the steamfont mountains to hunt rogue clockworks.
this is VERY time consuming and will be the limiting factor in how many bows you make.
Microservo's are no drop, so you have to loot them, you can't buy them.
On my second trip I found that I could send out a couple ooc messages saying I needed microservo's and would pay a 5pp bounty if I could come loot them off someone's kill. I got 1 guy who was looting them to turn in for faction to agree to a trade, he'd tell me where all the microservo's he came across were, and I'd give him all the scrap metal I came across. Worked out great for both of us.
Best place to hunt for rogue clockworks is north of the windmill in front of the mino mine. but watch out. The Kobold Missionary spawns there. and he killed me 3 times so far. Ouch. It's about 40th level, and kicked my butt at 21. My pet lasted just long enough to get an enthrall on him and run to the windmill. That was the only way I found I could survive an encounter.
Usually there is someone high level in the mines who can come out and kill the missionary for you. I should say, that I only died 3 times because I've been there for at least 8 hours hunting I collected about 20 microservos so far.
My first time I stopped at 6 microservo's because it was taking so long, and I was itching to try making a trueshot. Spiderlings are everywhere in steamfont. Kill some for silk.
Now off to Kelethin. Download a map, the place is hell to find your way around. Outside the bow shop there is a vendor selling planing tools, the last and most expensive by far ingredient.
the planing tool costs about 10pp, and the rest of the ingredients maybe total 2pp all together.
(assuming amiable faction with all vendors)
In champions, Maesyn will give you a bag if you tell him "I will gather materials" put spiderling silk, treent wood, dwarven wire and microsprocket in the bag and combine. I don't think this uses any skill. You get a backpack closed which you can give to Maesyn. In return you get exp and a treant bowstave. you put the bowstave, planing tool, a dwarven wire and a microsprocket into your fletching kit. cross your fingers and combine.
At 175 skill I was successful my first attempt.
I put up an auction and the guy standing next to me, a ranger had just tried to make one, and failed. It sold for 200pp in about 30 seconds.
My second failed and 3rd succeded. I sold the 2nd bow in east commons for 200pp in a few minutes of trying.
400pp not bad for a day's work.
Now with some spending money, I returned to the fletching stand.
I figured I'd fletch till I ran out of money again.
By this time It was costing 60pp to buy a full stack of materials.
but my failure rate was low, and I was making almost 60pp back selling the arrows.
It really started getting expensive when I got to steel shafts, but I talked to someone else who told me that I should use the ceramic vanes instead of the steel shafts, because they sell back for more.
good point.
I started making money. WOW! and I was skilling up.
I got to 202 and maxed out skill from arrow making.
so far I've made 8 trueshot bows and my second attempt was the only one I failed.
I've socked away 1kpp profit in the bank easily.
I found one guy who was willing to give me the bowstave, and 150pp just to finish the bow. that was worth it. really all the cost is in the microservos. half the microservo's is about half the work.
the bow is lore, so you can only have 1 at a time, but you can carry staves, and make another on the spot.
It's been a blast, and a great way to make money so far.

I tried holding more staves than one - that doesnt work anymore so dont waste your servos trying like I did. I made one trueshot at 147. I tried like 3 times before that and it didnt work and I Cant sell this thing for the life of me. Man, there are way too many twinks out there. People keep giving their stuff away because they want to look like saints to these lower lvl people. Know what? I took the long root. The game is not supposed to be easy. If people stopped giving away so much, maybe others can make money. I love to see a ranger walking around with a trueshot that he neiter bought nor made. I laugh heartily seeing that. Good thing they are rangers. There should be a new race - the Lazies. They can be large fat caterpillar like creatures that have millions of hands that they can take things with. Hey, if you are on Zeb server - go to Gfay and look for someone just like this - his name is Naturian. His brother convinced me to go from Ill omen to Gfay to give him a fine steel weapon. Get this - when I got there - the guy tried to sell me something - he had like 4 bags of stuff and was twinked out beyond believe for lvl 12 standards. He stays in Gfay and begs like crazy. He is hoping to get full ivy armor that way. Do you believe that? He just keeps begging and begging. I was lvl 24 when I made the trip to him. He is possibly the most selfish person in this game. Give him a tell if you are in Zeb and see for yourself - his name is Naturian - it is hilarious to watch. After I saw that he had about double what I had, I told him I wouldnt give him the fine steel weapon he made me travel from Ill omen to give him cause he was so desperate for a good sword. Wasted his time? I traveled for 45 minutes cause I felt bad for him. WAtch out for this guy andplease, give him nothing but nothing.

I too failed many times while trying to make my Trueshoot bow. When I exhausted all of the components on failed tries (microservers, dwarven wire, etc.), I would dejectedly go off and hunt until I had enough cash to work on my fletching skill some more (ceramic vanes and such are expensive) then get more components (I hate the sight of Rogue Clockworks!!). I bought +Int jewelry to increase my fletching skill faster, I bought +Wis jewelry to improve my chances of success. Finally at a fletching skill of 169 it paid off....my Trueshot bow! I was excited enough to wake my wife and tell her of my success (note to self: never wake wife to talk about Everquest again...).

Was it worth it?? YES. There is immense satisfaction in finishing something yourself. Yes, you could buy it but you lose the satisfaction of completing a quest. Those who buy 100K PP on ebay and twink out a lvl 1 character with Tolan's would not understand...their self esteem comes from getting to lvl 50 in 2 weeks. But for those whose character is an extension of themselves, it feels great to succeed.

Failure after failure...

Lvl 15 Ranger. Fletching 115. Int 79, wis 75 (I think these are correct). I have currently failed 14 times and am currently out of micro-servers. This is a very frustrating/time-consuming quest, and I know that since it has taken so much time I will not be as "satisfied" as I may have if it had been easily. Why would they make it so hard to get? Trueshot says you have to be a master fletcher, well... it ain't good enough. I will continue to try because i have so much time invested and love archery, and want this bow very bad, but I am getting a little disheartened after 14 failures... especially after reading about people getting it on 2 tries with 80 skill :).
RE: Failure after failure...
# May 09 2001 at 9:00 AM Rating: Default
I promised I would update, so here it is.

I started this quest at level 15 with fletchin at 115. I failed 15 times and my skill went up to 117. I was frustrated with killing clockworks so took a break and made some money and xp over in unrest. At 17th level I had raised my fletching skill to 149. I've read one of the guides on the net that says that the planing tool becomes trivial at 148 so I decided to try again. After being relatively unsuccessful at killing clockworks I scraped together 4 micro-servos and decided to try two attempts. I failed on the first and made it on the second. My wisdom and intelligence are both 75 (at 15th and 17th levels).

I think it is important that the planing tool was a trivial component when I attempted to make this bow again. If we make a guess at the percentage chance of making the bow with fletching of 100, at 5% then after 10 attempts there is only a 40.1% chance of making the bow. 20 attempts = 64.1%. If there is a 10% chance then after 10 attempts the chance of making the bow is 65.1% and with 20 attempts the chance is 87.8%.

My advice is wait until a skill of 148-150 before attempting this quest, because at that point the planing tool is trivial and the chance of successfully completing the bow will have gone up substantially (this is my guess).

I hope this helps.

I am interested in how everyone can have such high skills at lower levels, when I have been told numerous times that the skill are 5 times your current level plus 5. Is this information wrong. Please enlighten me.
RE: skill level
# Apr 28 2001 at 5:34 PM Rating: Decent
Trade skills have no level based limit. If you have the money and the time, you could become a master in whatever tradeskill you want at level 1. Most of the non-trade skills max out at (lvl+1)*5, but there are exceptions.

Just wanted to put in my 2cents, I tried to make the bow w/ my Level 15th Ranger who'd a skill of 104, Wis 93, Int 77 and failed 6 times.

Fortunately for me, a friend had one and gave it to me, he'd no longer was going to play his ranger. But one thing is for certain, prior to my friend giving me this bow, i was in the middle of collecting parts enuf for 30 tries (it's quite the headache, 60 Microservos!!!).

I'd saw a couple of posts below regarding the satisfaction, what that fella said is quite true, even though i have the bow for free, i'm missing that feeling of not earning it. So this might sound kinda crazy to some of u out there, most likely scenario for me is to either sell or give this bow away and attempt to MAKE MY Very Own Trueshot Longbow.

Peace Out Fellow Rangers,

There is NOTHING like the satisfaction of using an instrument of destruction crafted lovingly by your very own hands.

(Story time 8) )

I made my first bow on my second attempt back when my fletching was about 80. I knew I got lucky so I didn't push my luck. Used it for a while, then gave it to a friend of mine who hadn't been working much on her fletching and needed a better weapon. I figured since my skill had reached the 140's I was not gonna have much trouble, and had stored enough components in the bank for about 10 or so tries.

WRONG!

I failed miserably, went through enough components for probably 30 bows and got up to about 160 skill before I made another one successfully. Even used a borrowed one for a while. Gave it back after a day or two `cause I didn't feel right. I made a Shaped Oak Recurve and used it till I succeeded in making my TS again. Now I have a 175 and will not attempt making another TS `till I get over 200.

Point of this flash back is YES, there is a great deal of pride and satisfaction involved with creating and using your own Trueshot Bow. Sort of like a Jedi Knight creating their first Lightsabre. Think of it as a Coming of Age ritual....

A warning though. Be very prepared to put alot of bank into this after you hit skill level 100 or thereabouts. The components are EXPENSIVE.

Well, there you have my thoughts on that subject. Good luck and good hunting.
Confused bout this quest
# Apr 17 2001 at 7:16 AM Rating: Default
I keep reading the posts here and am very confused bout this quest. Everyone says that high fletching skill is required. I made my first Trueshot at level 8 with a fletching skill 24 (second attempt) After everyone on my server told me i was just lucky I tried it again this time at skill 56....once again i was successful (4th try this time) Is it possible that this quest is weighted for rangers to be more successful or something? Quick note: i tried this quest 24 times with my 22 warrior skill 134 and failed all of them!!!

They have changed this quest so you now have to be a master fletcher to even attempt to make the TS bow. Not sure how long its been like this, but that is the way it is now.

I tried making one for fun after getting tired of hunting for micro servos. I had 16 micros, failed 7 times, on the 8th time and using the last of the micros, I made the bow. Happy happy happy for me. Here's my stats when I started:

Flecthing : 88 - 90
Wisdom : 93
Intelligence : 75 (Base intelligence of a Wood Elf Ranger)

My flecthing skill went up to 89 on the 1st try even though I failed. Increased to 90 on the last try and made the bow.

I was sadly dissapointed though.. i mean, many hours of boat riding and servo hunting to see "you have sucessfully combined.." i mean.. wheres the fireworks and the parade?

Its hard to move on after trying for so long, i've just been camping the clockworks, have over a stack of servos, getting ready to make my second.

Bow kiting??

How do you bow kite??, I hear it all the time but do not undersatnd, please explain

RE: Bow kiting??
# Apr 11 2001 at 11:30 PM Rating: Decent
OK, ya wanna know how to bow kite? Sit down, get out your pen and paper, and make sure you pull the wax outta yer ears, cause I am only gonna go through it once, youngling.

First, if you are a ranger, then you are a master of the bow. Even the warrior can't crit as well as you can with it. Use it often, when in groups, take the time to back up and shoot at rooted targets, and pull with it. Bow use has got to be second nature.

When you shoot, you will turn to face your target if you can see it. That means that you will have to constantly readjust your path. Make sure the runway behind you is clear. I have been suprised (to death!) on several occassions because I didn't check behind me and got whomped by a Giant or Griffon.

Snare your target. Run backwards, firing off arrows at the target as often as you can. Resnare every so often so it can't catch you, and make sure you have a LARGE supply of arrows on you to kite with. Make the cheapest ones you can, and if you can't, pay someone to make them for you. It will still cost less than anything a merchant can sell you.

When you can get SoW, it makes it even better, but always but ALWAYS, snare your target first, then Flame Lick, THEN fire and watch your six. Before you know it, you will be a master at it, telling other people how to do it. Don't be afraid to Experiment with it either. If you have enough arrows and mana, you can kite yellows, sometimes reds (don't get cocky tho, and ALWAYS be ready to bug out).

I hope that my words of meager information and questionable wisdom have helped you.

Good luck and may Tunare guide your aim.

Of the classes that can use the bow, the Ranger is the best at bow kiting. If your a Ranger, when you get snare with your first rank of spells at level 9, to kite, simply cast snare on your target, start walking backwards and shoot your arrows at the target as you move backwards. Be sure to cast your Flame Lick spell while kiting. It is a DOT, and lowers the targets AC by 4.
At level 12, Rangers get the added benefit of critical hits with bows.

Paladins can do this, to lesser efficiency, by blinding the target an shooting at it as it runs off. Note, the target runs off very fast. They can also do it even easier on undead by casting spook the dead.

Shadow Knights can do this at level 15 when they their first darkness spell and fear. Fear takes a long time to cast. It may be easier to kite the undead with your spook the dead than using fear.

Rogues MAY be able to kite if they get off an Instill Doubt. Otherwise forget about it.

Warriors are out of luck with kiting.
RE: Bow kiting with Rogues!
# Jun 15 2001 at 11:52 AM Rating: Default
I've bow kited with my Rogue, who is only 10th level. All you need is a SoW. I'm using a Shaped Darkwood Compound Bow and Tailored Quivers, which brings my Delay down to 39 with a Damage of 22 with some 3pt arrows that have 125 range, for a total of 275 range.

With SoW, I bow kited yellow Young Kodiaks in East Commons without EVER getting hit, once! It's not very difficult.

Without SoW, I can get three shots off before they reach me.

So, your statement about Rogues and Warriors not being able to Kite is invalid. ANY class with a bow and SoW should be able to do it.

slow the target down or fear it start putting arrows in it before it starts to melee with you. if it is rooted in place shoot the barrel full of monkeys til it breaks the root. if you can fear it start pumping arrows in it while following behind it. the more shots you can get into the target before you must melee is the mark of a true bowman.

I have made this bow 2 times. Both at level 18 with a wis of 87, int of 81. The first try was with fletching of 130 which made it on the first try. My second took me about 10 tries to make with a fletching of 144.

Made mine last night on 13th and final attempt before i had to go and collect more stuff. Wisdom 89, int 75, fletching skill varied between 88 and 112 ( raised to 113 when i made it ). I now hate boats with a passion!
I found the quest long and tedious, but after i bow kited an even con aviak and killed it only losing 1 bub of health myself, i have decided it was well worth it.
Cost me about 50pp inclusive of fletching training. Plus 15pp for a teleport back to NK so i didn't have to wait for the damn boat again.

At what lvl do you have to be in fletching to make this bow, if you have the conponents?

Addendum: Please include INT level as well. Both wisdom and intelligence may be factors in successfully completing this quest. Thanks for your time.

Level 6 Wood Elf Ranger Lithana with 82 fletching skill on the 3rd try, woot! Had been saving servos from hunting in Steamfont and had ten. Decided to go ahead and try it for kicks and lucked out. It should be noted that getting one this low is rather fluky and a skill of around 160 is recommended. The Trueshot Bow's trivial has not been found but is over 202 and thought to be well over 202.

I know what they meanwhen they call this rare. Even I haven't made one yet, but I'm close. I encourage all rangers to work on their fletching and make this bow. It's like a lightsaber to a Jedi. :-)

Darn straight

I know what you mean, it might not be the best bow in the game, but it makes a hell of a badge.
You also feel great when you successfully make it.

By the way, if you think it would be easier to just buy one, you are probably right, however you are missing out on a mini epic quest if you do.

It will feel better when you get your first Critical Hit with a bow you made yourself. Mine was on a caiman in Oasis for 45. :)

I got lucky and managed to make mine at lvl 15 with a 108 Fletching skill.

I can't wait to be able to get the Raincaller bow.

At level 14 my fletch is at 127. 7 fails so far with jewelry on +6wis, and +2 int. Did you know that hunting for microservos is ALOT worst than waiting for the boat lol. I'll post my wis and int here when i make my first one. later tonight :) , after i hunt servos for 6 more hours.Last note I get 35 Crit hits with my rough ash bow :).
