RE: Graphics
# Jul 15 2004 at 5:46 AM Rating: Decent
i saw this drop 2 days ago on a pretty easy raid in comparsion of the four RZ kills my guild has done to date. after DKP'n it i had a roll off on this sword against another sk and lost my butt... i suck at dice:P but i am a DE and he is a human but the graphic on it along with his white/silver armor dye maks a good combo. i mean what the heck i would not have turned it down if it looked like a dark reaver
imo its a good group sword but not to be used on a raid unless you were MA/SA because of that DoT other then that its a good sword for amount of risk involved.

Nice Proc
# Feb 29 2004 at 8:39 PM Rating: Decent
I have this weapon and I love it. The DoT is quite nice, actually. Parsing my logs for 10 fights (a small sample, I admit), I find 122 dot damage messages. That is 414 points of damage, on average, per mob. You would need to have a 150DD proc go off nearly 3 times per mob before it would do more damage. No one posts about how weak a 150DD proc is.
yet another weapon..

heres yet another weapon that should always go to pally / sk first , then warrior, berserker if they can use it.. then its a toss up between every other class and a ranger .. u get duel wield USE it! and btw thats why eq cheezed rangers and gave them am3 if u have been wondering.. you are suppose to use your bow 95% of the time or u arent playing your char correctly .. if thats the case make a warrior then bid on items u dont really need...
RE: yet another weapon..

i'm not sure if you'll see this due to the sheer old age of your post but...
I'm astonished/ashamed that you can be so closed minded to say "you are suppose to use your bow 95% of the time or u arent playing your char correctly". So by that statement i'm forced to assume you haven't had a ranger off tank any adds until they got mezzed, root park any adds, or depending on your class/gear, out damage you melee wise.
I'm a ranger and I have atleast 3 2 handed weaps, a sword for when i get stuck tanking, a 2hs w/ a lower delay for when I have to tank but riposted dmg isn't an issue, and a 2hb for mpg trials, and occasional tanking. Granted they are for the most part situational weaps, but they still have their use.
Would i bid on this to try to take it away from a plate class, no. atm would i pass on this weap altogether, yes. but back when i didn't have better and if it was going to rot, or if it went to rolls, i'd roll.
Just Don't tell people how to play their class, if anything I only use my bow to stay out of ramp/AE on raids if i don't have a healer in my group, or to pop TS for some burst dps when needed.

If you don't know what you are talking about, please don't post! 40AC on a weapon is amazing for a ranger. Bows are not always the way to go, due to enclosed spaces, tryign to fire over hills and around obstacles, etc. The new gfx engine doesn't make bows all powerful, they only make them work right. You still can't fire over a hill or thru a chair. 1h is more damage in most places, but 2h is nothing to scoff at. What if your'e tanking? Yeah, i know, a ranger, but i'm my guild's MT, and i have full tank AAs before i even thought about AM3. If this sword dropped, it would be mine. Fewer hits = fewer ripostes. People like you need to be sat in front of a mob with 2 1h weapons during a flurry - then perhaps you will understand why rangers get 2h as well.

The fact that your a ranger and guilds MT scares me.

Rangers are DPS not tanks. Leave the tanking to SKs, Pals, and Wars. Thats what they were made for.
RE: yet another weapon..
# Sep 18 2004 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
I'm amazed that a guild would let a ranger tank even with all of his "tanking aa's" In exp groups, I could see it happen, but in raids? A Rangers prime objective is to deal damage, not tank, specially in raids. Yes high level rangers with lots of aa's and great gear can tank probably in exp groups, but if your in a raid please leave the tanking to the plate classes. Then again for all we know you could be bluffing. In case you didn't know, your dps lowers if your tanking while you get hit.

# Dec 03 2003 at 10:52 AM Rating: Decent
I have this, and I use it alot if I can't use my bow,and the mob we are killing has a tendency to riposte. My primary when I dual wield is SEM and my secondary is Obsidian Scimitar of War, my stats and hp are higher when I dual wield, but believe it or not, my melee dps is higher with this 2hander when I'm hasted. The proc wasn't something that I even considered when I rolled on it, the ratio, ac, dmg bonus, hp, and mana were. If I can't hit a mob with my bow, I start melee with SEM get it to proc, then switch to the 2 hander for the damage output. The DOT wont pull aggro off a EB equipped tank, and rarely pulls aggro off any tank. Its an awesome sword and seeing some of the big crits off it is just the icing on the cake. So proc or no proc this is a great weapon for any melee with a 2hs skill.

Good SA Weapon
# Oct 23 2003 at 2:50 PM Rating: Decent
Got this for my warrior a week ago. Makes a good SA (second assist) weapon for raids. Add an Anger III augment and it will make a pretty decent substitute for the Blade of War.

Love it for holding aggro and providing DPS in xp groups as well.
Paladin's use
# Jan 11 2003 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
For a Paladin this is a great defensive and safe weapon to use. I would switch this in and out with Goldenrod being more of an offensive weapon due to its lifetap. The ratio of this sword being 2 more dmg over the dly of the Goldenrod gives slightly more dps yet has more control with the dot proc rather then a DD. The large increase in AC and Hps adds that extra protection in the event the MT dies and you have agro for a few seconds. A good example would be an undead encounter. You want to push the envelope as far as you can with dmg and at the same time be very causious to stay live or thats a lot of dmg lost on the raid. This sword makes that possible. See also the Ornate Greatblade as an upgrade to this one.

RE: Paladin's use
# Oct 01 2003 at 12:56 PM Rating: Good
Actually, if you considered Goldenrod your offensive weapon and this your defensive, you'd be kinda backwards. First off, look at the procs:
Boil Blood is a DoT, which helps as a taunt as well.
Spirit Leech is a lifetap, a way of healing (and the only way for SKs) by draining a mob of it's hps.

Secondly look at the ratio:
Goldenrod = 40/32
Basalt Greatsword = 45/35

Goldenrod does have a wee bit quicker attack but the attack bonuses from the higher attack ratio & even high delay (creating a higher dmg bonus) make the Greatsword parse a lil bit more damage, although you wouldn't notice without counting either time or damage. As a pally you could probably see the damage best when hitting crits against undead.

True the Greatsword has more AC, but more damage output as well, while the Goldenrod will keep you alive longer.
RE: Paladin's use
# Jan 11 2004 at 11:49 PM Rating: Default
Sounds good in theory and alot of it is correct but I'd have to say that the end message is kinda pointless.

First off if you have both This and the Goldenrod Use this over the Goldenrod ALWAYS, there is no reason to use Goldenrod (Although the proc is nice.) The diverse SVs are good but its much better to have a lump sum like this 35 SVC. I'd say use Goldenrod when farming Greenies.

On mobs that don't have Disease Resist, the Goldenrod is a 43/32 which is a few more DPS, but I have come to learn that it is not wise to rely on Elemental-Based Damage, go for Banes and Melee.

Now the bad part of this weapon -- the proc. This type of proc (low damage low level minute lasting DoTs) is put on weapons as HELLO a bad thing, not a good thing (check Naradi's Lance, Wicked Shank, there are many more). The agro on the weapon is good but definatly not bad enough to pull off a good MT or good enough to keep agro by itself. What this proc does is ***** up your chances of recovering on an unlucky occasion. This proc will make Memwipes, FDs, Evades and Mezzes all impossible and also (not exactly sure how this works) will mess with Roots.

Ok Finally reguarding the LT on the Goldenrod... 75hp LT is really not a big deal, you get 75hp in 2 ticks from Raid Regen easily, and 75 damage on a mob is not much when your hitting for 200+. These kinds of Lifetaps are simply GODLY for soloing greenies though, because your chance to Proc seems to go up while your taking much less damage.

The Stats on this are less diverse, but most people would rather take the Dex over Wisdom, especially when you get more Mana, and you also get more HP.

Finally, as a Paladin I have come to notice that Blunt damage of all kinds are just crappy compaired to Slashing and Piercing, Especially in 2 handers. This goes for just everything, the Blunts are for Monks, thats because they just naturally do more damage, but a Pally with alot of experience would rather take a 2hs over a 2hb.

RE: Paladin's use
# Apr 01 2004 at 2:43 AM Rating: Decent
Well first I can say you dont have a Goldenrod, the life tap is a 150hp lt and if virtually unresistable, It procs alot, with a gr with lt aug and running pious might I adverage a proc every 7 seconds. If you do alot of off tanking there is not question, you really dont want a weapon to proc a dot from a reposite just before the chanter mezzes.(or else your stuck there tanking) Just my two cents, I wouldnt let go of my GR short of anything before the elementals.
On a side note Weapons affinity also is noticable with it. I can run through reg difficulty ldon with a necro for a healer and not have to heal myself just from the procs

# Dec 20 2002 at 9:46 AM Rating: Default
For you ppl to stop complaining about a weapon it must be able to proc death touch at each hit, and let you be able to fly, and give you aego. This sword is a great sword just for the stats alone. The proc is as Thind sais only icing on the cake. This weapon is amazing, and many ppl will give their right arm for one...

Oh my God. There should be a law in place that allows people to kill you, if you don't actually read what they write.

It isn't a complaint. None of what I wrote is. It is a question, that I suppose I should ask to the people at verant, and not to people like you that have no clue. About the content of my question, or how to read what is written before your eyes.

I will type it slowly, in the hopes that you will actually be able to comprehend what I am saying, instead of what you *think* I am saying.

I think the weapon is great. Would I like one? Yes. Would I take it as is? Yes. Would I take one without the proc? Yes.

Did my messages say **anything** about the proc casting aego, flying, xray vision, death touch, or any other ridiculous frivolity that you envision?

NO.

I asked only why the proc was not more in line with the risk involved with obtaining the weapon.
Oh please...

I have a question...

Suppose I had a sword I was willign to give you...

Suppose this sword had 40 AC
Now give it a damage delay of 45/35

Not bad, eh?

Now then! for poops and giggles, lets throw in 15 dex 15 STA ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE hp... and 145 mana...

Interested?

The proc is simply icing on the cake. Hell, its less than that. Any meele at the level that will see this would want it for the HP alone. The damage dely is excellent. The stats are nice. Okay, no rsists... but, oh well.

The dot will simply add another layer of aggro for the MT, or another tidbit of damage done by any othe melee weilding this.

So, please post things like answers to who drops this and stradegies to kill said mobs.

Thank you. :)

Wow. Did you get all bent out of shape, or what?

If you would have taken the time to comprehend what you read in my question, you would have seen that I acknowledged that it was a nice weapon.

Would I take it if I, A: was able to get to what drops it; B: Make it through killing it; C: won the open roll on it?

Yes.

Does any of that have anything to do with my question?

No.

My question had to do with a proc effect, and why it's (the proc) level of damage was so 'out of line', for the mobs you will be using it to kill, and not to mention for the mobs that drop the weapon.

Take for example the Wakizashi of the Frozen Skies Dmg 6, Dly 22. +1.50 Wt., That procs an 81 point DD. It is acquired in a 25-40 zone, and the proc is 'in-line' for the mobs that you will be using it against.

Now in todays twinked society, probably nobody uses this weapon anymore, but it is still a sweet little sword for it's lvl range.

So my question (which the aggro management for MT's makes some sense) still stands. When using this weapon against the high end mobs that drop it to begin with, why not put a DoT on it like (just an example) Winged Death (1287 dmg/minute).

What do I know. =)

well said. seeing boiling blood proc in PoP, specially at these tiers made me dissapointed. Not that the weapon isnt great, I would love getting it and slap a proc augment on it.

i have seen battles were the last person standing was a wizard, and they died from a DOT just as the mob died too. id say any extra damage that can be done, even if its 500 on a 100k HP mob, is worth it.
crappy procs
# Dec 19 2002 at 8:42 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I don't understand verants thinking here. Assuming it doesn't get resisted, what is the purpose of putting such a lame proc on a weapon from such a high end zone?

Warriors, Pallys, Rangers and SK's that would be able or want to use this weapon (which has pretty nices stats other than the proc), are fighting mobs with incredible amounts of HP. While I concede that every HP off the mob is good, even if this weapon procs every swing, it just keeps refreshing the dot, not stacking them....what difference is 650-900HP to a 100k+ hp mob that is hitting for single/dual/quad 800+?

What do I know? =) I'm only lvl 51, and will probably never ever get to see drops like this.
RE: crappy procs
# Apr 02 2003 at 6:48 PM Rating: Default
Ok my first idea is if you arent within a week or 2 of even getting to these mobs/zones dont post about how much you want to drool/spooge/***** slap verant/obtain/mq the item, if its out of your grasp in the near future you wont be contributing to the reading public. I grow weary of reading lvl 20s talking about how this planar item or that planar item is ubah. These are the same people who think i have good gear. First off the ratio and stats as stated are ungodly, 2nd the ac and proc mean this helps with that nasty task of tanking, at the high end of the game maintaining aggro on a mob can and often does mean the differance between a successful and unsuccessful raid. 3rd if its sk useable the proc has to be limited because SKs have self procs that can be stacked onto the weapon proc, so if your an sk who can get this you might have a 195 HP tap on your weapon as well, and giving this bad boy a better proc say a 150 dd or lifetap means that it could be unbalanced in the hands of an sk and remove them from the available classes able to use this weapon causing infinite whining in the sk community about shafting.

So to sum up, in my humble opinion
PROC =: ubah;
stats =: ubah;
ratio =: ubah;
people under lvl 60 posting about it rockin/sucking << sucky.

OK No more talking for you. A 65 SK with 2100hp is the saddest thing I've ever heard... nice Magello.

This proc is indeed NOT uber and it was his right to ask what the hell is going on here.

This proc is a BAD thing, what it does is go off all the time and get mobs DoTed... whats wrong with that??? ---> The mobs are DoTed, now try to Mez, Memblurr, Evade or FD... wow that 37DPT sure is doing you a hell of alot of good while someones trying to do crowd control and YES this does happen.

Jesus try to look at people asking a question instead of getting pissed at them for no apparent reason.
RE: crappy procs
# Dec 20 2002 at 5:46 AM Rating: Good
I don't really know...yet...but...
I'm guessing 37 extra damage/tick is not so piddly against raid mobs. Assuming 100k total hitpoints again, even if it's not a long fight and it's only 1000dmg total, that's 1% of the mob's life, EXTRA damage done by one guy. Screenshots I've seen of such encounters suggest that the tanks are not hitting all that hard...it's tough to land good hits on way-red mobs. I see that already at level 50 on raids: my damage output drops a LOT vs. mobs 10 levels above me. 37/tick might not be such an insignificant fraction of their total damage output. Vs. blues, yes, piddly...but not vs. reds.

So what Verrant aims to say is that out of a higher end zone than HoH where the Ranger Ornate Broadsword drops in (also 45/35) Comes an almost identical weapon.

Never mind the fact even NtoV yields better Pal/Sk items than this.

I love the Exp PoP provides, I love the quests, but some of the risk vs reward seems ...pardon my french F***ed up.
Interesting.
