Lore: This key unlocks the elevator that leads to the inner sanctum of New Paineel. Once activated this key unlocks the achievement, Bone Crafted Key, removing the need for you to store the physical key. QuestsThis item is used in quests.Expansion List - Premium only. 
The Bone Crafted Key is given by any of the guards, once your faction is minimum faction is exactly 100 amiably or better. Just say to a guard "I need a key" and if you don't already have one, you will receive one. Now grants the General > Keys achievement "Bone Crafted Key - This key unlocks the elevator that leads to the inner sanctum of New Paineel." |

As a Barbarian Shaman I travelled to The Warrens and just spent around five hours killing Kobolds, all my sins have been forgiven and I got the key and the small dopamine hit that came with the achievement.

If you are like me, ended up in The Hole and you used the portal to Paineel, you'll find yourself stuck in town. And then lets say you left a teleport item in your bank to get yourself out because you don't have the key. The bankers are KoS but you can still use them and they won't attack you.
Get DE Illusion and ask """Heridion or Menbuknar"" in ""Paineel zone"" for your key.

Erudite Illusion does grant a much better faction bonus than DE Illusion.
If the PC race is not erudite there are at least three options:
Grind Kobolds in The Warrens until dubiously or indifferently faction.

- Ask a friendly Enchanter for it. (Be aware that zoning can remove illusions depending on AAs !) .
- Use a shaman made illusion potion. (Be aware that zoning can remove illusions depending on AAs !) .
- Mask of Obtenebration

As of today this doesn't work on Phinigel server. My dwarf used the DE mask, went to the guards and still conned threateningly. Wouldn't speak to me - at least not with civility. :)

OP didn't say what race/class/deity he/she was starting with. It probably does the same faction adjustment for points that it always did, just didn't move you out of a bracket.
Good point. Didn't think about it being a shift of faction. :)

So, try Erudite, it definitely raised higher for me. But on top of that, I am an enchanter so i used Collaboration.

I have a level 21 DE SK...trying to get a key to Paineel...I hailed and conned the guards by the newbie field (Heridion & Menbuknar)to try and get a key to Paineel...at first I conned threatening...no key...killed about 500 kobalds in the Warrens and went to dubious...no key...killed more kobalds in the Warrens...went to apprehensive...no key...killed even more kobalds in the Warrens and finally got to indifferent...said "I need a key" and "need keys" and "need keyz"...no key...at indifferent guards now respond "You need to prove your dedication to our cause before I can discuss such matters with you," which is better that the "go away, Slime" message I was getting at first. What gives? Why can't I get a key when I con indifferent and have raised my faction from threatening to indifferent by killing kobalds in the Warrens? Is this broken?
You need amiable faction with Heretics to get this key. This can be done by either charming the guard yourself to make him your pet, or by building up faction in Warrens.
Edit: the Paineel guards were changed to be immune to charm.

Quest npc's look for a specific faction value, not just Apprehensive, Indifferent, etc.
Either this quest has been changed to require Amiable faction, or it has always required slightly above the mid-point of Indifferent.
I think it is probably the second because I don't recall being able to get this key by sneaking behind the guards. A successful sneak always gives you middle Indifferent faction.

it has been fixed. once the key is on your keyring you can enter and exit paineel without the actual key
The Bone Crafted Key now goes on your keyring.

I didn't need it on my person, or on the cursor to enter Paineel, however, to exit, it must be on the cursor so that part hasn't changed--just "need keys" to one of the guards.

It works now, once it's on your keyring you can take the elevator both up and down without it, just click the rock.

If inside Paineel, talk to the guard to the left of the lift. If outside, talk to either of the two guards in the newbie area. All you have to say is "I need a key". You only need to be indifferent.
Factionwise, I went from scowling to indifferent in about 1.5 hours, slaughtering every Kobold I could find - hardly 3000-5000 mobs; more like 250-300. This was with a 52 Iksar Monk. Saving the molars (about 25 of them) and handing to Royal Guard Lilkus took me from indifferent to aimiable.

I had to go back to this zone for the Erollisi Day Quest and couldn't get in. I did the old school trick of swimming through the rocks to get in via The Hole, then made my way back up to the "main locked door". I charmed the Guard on the left (on the right if you are facing the door from the inside) and said to him " I need a key". He gave me a key, I killed him and the key popped onto my ring as I used it on the door.

Confirmed still works 2/3/2019
The correct way to get a key is to say, "I need keyz" with a "z". If you are outside of the city, ask the skelly guard in the noob area. If you are inside, ask the skelly guard next to the lift. I think you need to be at least "indiferent" to get a key. You can raise you faction in The Warrens but it can take days to do so...up to 5000 kills! If you kill named mobs in there, it may drop it down to about 3000 but not sure on that one. As a necro erudite from Paineel, the hole key cost me 110pp. Killing guards in the city is a great way to make plat (about 7pp per kill for their sword and shield plus random cash).
It should be noted that the bone crafted key also acts as a light source if placed in one of your eight inventory slots. I can confirm that it isn't as bright as a greater lightstone, but it isn't too bad.
Why enter Paineel if it's not your home town?
Well, you can buy a Hole key there.
It's possible to work your way thru the door to the Hole without a key, unless maybe you're a large race; but a key is nice. If you're raiding the Hole, there'll always be a couple people who have a lot of trouble getting through the closed door. And it's underwater...
The poison vendor (upstairs in one of the buildings in town) sells Hole keys for around 100pp. They're easy to miss in her inventory, because they look like a bag.

I'm not sure if there's still a bug related to the key, maybe "U" works now. But it definitely works to hold the key in your hand and click it on the rock.
Getting OUT of the city is way too much challenge for level 1 evil Erudites. They need to fix it; there's never anyone around for a new player to ask. Let's see...Find the SK guild (The Fell Blade), face away from it, go out thru the gate and left. Turn into the unmarked building there, and upstairs in the back is a room with an odd-looking rock on the ground. Pick up your key and click it on the rock. Lost your key? Tell a nearby SKELETON guard "I need a key."
How they expect new players to figure that out, I have no idea.

You must normally be amiable or better to get the key. I just recently came up with a way to get one with a much lower faction (scowling would work, in truth); you can read how I did it here.
