This is a great shield for a mid level Paladin, I have it still, as I am proud of the fact that I managed to get it....and it CAN be MQ'd. The only downside to it is, for such a long Quest of waiting for both versions of Grimrot to spawn, the shield graphic is def. a downer, it looks like any other metallic base shield. (On another note, the Silent Watch Shield has a disappointing wooden shield graphic as well). These graphics should def. be updated, since it's such a waiting game to get this shield, you would be proud to have it stand out.
On the note of the charges, I've never used any of the charges on this shield, and yet when I logged in a few months back, it had ZERO charges on it? What gives? I don't really even want to look at my Soulfire's charges. It seems like a lot of people's charged items when to zero around a certain period of time, like a major patch or when you upgraded to Luclin. It's not that I would really use them at my lvl, but it's the fact that I never got a chance to.........

This shield can be equipped on the back?

I kind of doubt it since it only says secondary melee. Then again, Vah Shir can't be pally or cleric either. OH! I am going out of my mind.

Just curious it states that this can be places in primary or secondary melee slots......but several posts here say they are putting it in their "back" you mean your secondary slot, or have they changed where this item can be placed/held?

the Aegis was such a great item not because it was a shield, but more so because it was actually a cloak with 10wis and 25 resist on it... and a cool clicky (and who doesnt' like clickies, right?). This was about as tough to get as the infamous Paw of Opalla (pre-quest nerf... stupid gold ring).

There are several shields and various other items that can be fit into multiple slots. What it says depends on what slot it's currently equipped in. So yes, this can be equipped on the back.

Unlimited Heal (~90 HP) wouldn't be overkill, especially with a cast time of 8-10 or something. Hell, even GHeal with a cast time of 15 or so wouldn't be overkill. But this is an old world item and I highly doubt that the old world zones will ever be looked at and revamped to bring them in line with the new worlds, so this will always be a crappy 1 charge SHeal. Does anyone EVER use charges on non-throw away items?!? I know I don't.

they could just put a recast time on it... think about it. if you can only cast it, oh, once every minute or so, itd be hard to abuse.

# Mar 24 2002 at 11:25 AM Rating: Decent
If it had some insane number of Gr Heal charges, the area would become overcamped (like AC). Could you imagine the effect of an endless supply of Gr heals? My God, the cleric would never go OOM. (At least not until he tries to heal 45+ tanks with a little 300hp heal *heehee*)

IMHO, it's like soufire's Complete heal charges, they are there to save your butt someday; but the item's stats are the reason you carry it.

I have been camping the Lord for so far 60+ hours today SoLs Patches came out so I was able to kill the PH 4 times and finally the Dead version poped I rooted the pet then the Lord I cast two banish undead on him and killed him and one cast of banish on the pet killed it. The undead version is Very easy to kill.

I just obtained the Aegis of Life, and item stats aside, it was well worth getting this symbol of true dedication and merit. Everquest is not just about min-maxing your ability scores, but also about roleplaying your character. Wear this item with pride.

Which (live or dead) version of Lord Grimrot will spawn, and at what IG hours you should kill the place-holder, is completely random. The only thing certain is his spawn rate.

Word of advice: Keep killing those Putrid Skeletons while you wait on Lord Grimrot, and save all the bone chips that they drop. You will not only improve faction with the Priests of Life when the skellies die, but you can also give the bone chips to Wolten Grafe (Paladin's Guild, South Qeynos) for more faction boosts. I went from "indiferrent" to "ally" in two days, and it was worth ensuring that I get the quest. (Keep in mind that the Corrupt Guards of Qeynos will not like you very much from then on). Note, you do NOT have to be faction maxed to get the Aegis of Life, as some may have claimed in the past.

The person who said:
"if you want a live pop kill the PH between 5-7pm, then exactly 3 hrs and 20 min later you will have a daytime pop of another PH or live grimrot. In order to get a dead grimrot kill the PH between 5-7 am you will have a nighttime pop of either a PH or undead grimrot"... blowing smoke, folks, this just can't be true.

- An EQ day/night is 90 minutes long. Therefore, an hour in gametime is 3.75 real minutes long.
- Grimrot, or his PH, is on a spawn timer of 3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes real time(I've been camping him for days now on Brell Serilis, and have been timing it carefully).
- 3 hrs 20 min realtime = 2 days, 5 1/3 hrs gametime.
- So, killing the PH at 5pm (for example) gives the next spawn at 10pm. This ISN'T a "daytime pop" as described in the section I quoted from that other message...

My opinion, based on what I've seen?
The live version is more common than the undead one - I've yet to kill the undead and I've gotten the live one twice.
The PH or Grimrot spawns every 3 hrs 20 min, with perhaps 10 minutes variance maximum.
It's completely random what spawn you get. I've tried the little tricks everyone has, and none of them have produced a spawn as described.

Just be patient and play an alt for the 3 hrs you're waiting... I will be very proud to wear the Aegis as the best back slot item I can reasonably obtain.

I salute you, clerics and paladins with the patience to do the quest.

An EQ day is 72 minutes, not 90.

Guess that scrrews up your math.

I agree 100% with you, The time you kill the PH, and the Time he pops, have absoulty nothing to do with what pops... I camped him for 3 days... getting every spawn power napping inbetween kills.
i had about 70% ph's and 30% live versions. not once did a undead version spawn.

30% live Grimrots? That seems high from my experience. I have killed the placeholder over 30 times, and gotten 3 live Grimrots, also no undead ones. Undead one must be a real rare one, or we've both gotten really unlucky.

I'm curious as to what is the minimum faction to succeed when turning in?

# Sep 26 2001 at 10:36 AM Rating: Decent
Ok i set for 8 hours straight tryin to get either one of the grimrots to spawn. After not getting either one i came back here and checked some posts, the fact of the matter is the PH is a standing putrid skeleton who spawns under the middle hut,if you want a live pop kill the PH between 5-7pm, then exactly 3 hrs and 20 min later you will have a daytime pop of another PH or live grimrot. In order to get a dead grimrot kill the PH between 5-7 am you will have a nighttime pop of either a PH or undead grimrot.Keep in mind that the undead grimrot is the rarest of the 2 i have gotten 3 lives in 7 hrs but have yet to get the undead one ,both i have seen to be completly random spawns bouncing back and forth from PH to live grimrot ,if u get a PH just kill it at the set time and 3hrs and 20 min later just hope you get lucky.

Not only can it be equipped on the back, which is fantastic, it has +25 disease resist, which is incredible. Now that I carry the paw of oppala, my disease resist is only 12 unbuffed. This shiled would be worth camping for the resist, even if it was only 5 ac, and 3 wis, or something like that.

As it is, it's wonderful. Much better than my cloak of the Ry'Gorr oracle.

BTW, I got live grimrot today, on "only" my 12th spawn. Now all I need is the rare one /cry.

This is by far the longest camp I've done. Makes me long for the days of camping Dylin Starsine for the testament of Vanear. And to think I complained about a 7 hour spawn, just cause I wasn't first in line. <lol>

Umm, 10wis, 10ac AND 25 sv Disease on a back slot item, and you're worried about charges. What are you suggesting we camp that is better? Sure there are things like lodizal shell shield, but that takes a pretty strong group. This thing I can camp pretty much solo, with a little help.

I just took down live grimrot (the hard one to kill) with only the help of a lvl 35 SK, who accidentally pulled 4 skeletons and grimrot as he arrived to help me. Even so, we destroyed grimrot, his pet, and the other skellies. Had to throw some heals, and Grimrot partial resisted all my nukes, but we won, and I was at 2 bubbles, and the SK was full life. So not hard to get, for those of us who can't rely on always having a group of 6 55+ lvl players to help us camp items.

This is just about as much Wis as is possible to cram into your back slot, barring drops in very high level (raid) type zones. The disease resist is nice as well, IMHO. I'm a big fan of that much concentrated resist on any item, but in any case, although it would be nice if it had more than 1 charge of Sup Heal, the fact is this item would rock immensely even without that spell. Instead of disliking the limited charges, I prefer to appreciate the slight added bonus of a charge of healing on an already impressive item :)

#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 10 2001 at 12:49 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) whether or not you spawn the live or dead grimrot is a matter or coincidence, some people hypothesize about killing the ph at 3:37pm while it is raining while simultaneously /beg at the ph so that the desired version will spawn, not gonna happen. The ph is the standing putrid skeleton for both versions, from there, pray for rain.

stupid question?
# Jun 05 2001 at 12:34 PM Rating: Default
um, this is probably going to sound dumb. the graphic says that it holds 1 charge of superior healing. Does this mean what it says? If it does, why bother putting it there at all?
RE: stupid question?
# Jul 18 2001 at 11:39 AM Rating: Decent
It is good for Clerics because it has +10 wisdom. Nobody would really want it for the effect.

It is also good becuase it can be used (I believe) as a shield, or back item. With decent AC and great wis, this is a wonderful item for a mid to high level cleric.
RE: stupid question?
# Jun 05 2001 at 11:40 PM Rating: Default
They put the 1 charge of superior healing charge b/c this would be a good sheid for a pali (b/c clerics get this spell at lvl 34) b/c if a pali got jumped while soloing he could save him self w/ basically another ~ 600 Hp
# May 24 2001 at 7:11 AM Rating: Good
OK..this is how you do this quest..
1. If you kill the PH (a putrid skeli that is standing) at the 3AM hour you will get the Live Grimrot 3- 31/2 hrs later {real life time}..He is extremely magical resistant and has about 1800 hp (I scrolled and counted them)..He hits you with spells and weakens you. I'm a lvl 45 Pali and he conned blue to me..I killed him with lvl 28 shami buffs and one heal in 1 min. (had a wurmslayer attack of 860 and an ac of 950 and didn't get below 1/2 health..)
2. As for the dead grimrot i can't tell you yet, but the ph and spawn times are the same. I hear that the dead one is easier..I will post you soon..I hear you have to kill the ph at 3 pm to get the dead grimrot..
3. If you need faction the easiest way is to create a dummy monk, bind him in N.Qeynos by the pool where the pali is swimming {make sure you bind on the left side of the pool (the pali side)..make sure you put some pts in his fists..get a kick hot button and your rdy..Jump in and kill fish..After you've killed a fish or two make sure that there is a fish body in the loot..swim to the shore where your bound and log..
the fish spawn every 5 min or so and the carcus wont rot by the time you log on your player that needs the shield..Go and click on the fish and get the LORE fish body and give it to the swimming pali..make sure, make sure, make sure that you are amiable before you do this or else you won't any positive faction with him..Once you do this process 5-10 times I guarantee you'll go from amiable to Alli..that is how you get your faction (it will also help if you kill the skellis at the camp)
Im on the Hammer server if you have any questions

Where? In South Karana just south and west of the bridge to North Karana is a skellie camp. The PH is the standing putrid skellie.

Now that they've come out with a new faction level "allied" in a recent patch I would suggest anyone doing the quest be allied before turning in your stuff.

Killing karana bandits for the red sashes is an extremely good way to raise faction here. During my soulfire quest I went from indifferent to warm in 3 hours turning in sashes while my faction barely moved from bone chips and gold pieces. To get from warm to allied I may try that fish idea tho :)
Faction with NIfe
# May 04 2001 at 1:16 PM Rating: Default
If you are having faction problems with this quest, as another poster has mentioned you can turn in 2gp to Novashine and get faction or you can give him bone chips (I don't remember how many at a time - I think 4). These will raise your faction, but slowly.

After getting faction to (I believe) amiably you are at a level where you can turn in Koalindl fish to the guard swimming in the Temple of Life pool.

Just as killing the fish in the pond is a MAJOR negative faction hit, turning one in is a MAJOR boost. Check on this site on the legitimate ways of getting a fishy (regurgatonic or some nonsense). Another simple, fast way is to create a new character in Qeynos (Wiz works well for me). Have the new wizzy blast and stab fish in pond. Do this at the end away from the swimming guard! Check the body of the kofish. If there is a nodrop fish on it log off with the mule and quickly log back on with your main character. Loot the fish and give it to the swimming guard. You get major faction and usually either a ring or prayer beads. Keep the ring in the bank if you don't need to equip it -- that way if you repeat the quest you are most likely going to get the prayer beads (ring and beads are lore). The beads have two charges of a nice healing spell. After 6-7 repetitions of this your mule character will be KOS to most of the city. Delete/recreate and start over. Turning in fish will get you from amiably to kindly with almost no effort.

Okay, here's the deal on faction. All these posts have said hail the guy in the temple and then say "I will defend life". Supposedly, if your faction is high enough he will give you the quest. Well, being a cleric of Rodcet Nife, I was already warmly as heck...that's right, I said heck. He would never give me the quest. So I worked on newbie quests for 2 full days. I did so much gosh darn faction work that I recieved a full blue bubble of xp...and I'm lvl 54 if that says anything. He still wouldn't give me the quest. Finally irritated with the faction building I tried "I will defend life" again. Still no quest given. So I tried a different approach and asked "what about Lord Grimrot?" Low and behold, he gives me a spill about a certain SK we all hate camping in SK. After you read this new message you will see that the "I will defend life" is wrong. After his new message say "I came here to defend life". Zip Hopefully this will end a lot of frustration that all you other paladins and clerics are having with the faction.

Absolutely, just have more work to do on the faction. Kill all the putrid skeletons in the camp, every time they spawn. Since the standing putrid skeleton is rarely there when you first arrive, you will probably spend several hours getting the first spawn. Kill the putrids while you wait. Fairly nice faction boost to priests of life, and regular guards of qeynos, but bloodsabers goes down fast too. not sure if this is an important DE faction, and too lazy to look, but be aware of this if it is. Corrupt qeynos goes down too, but a few stacks of orc/gnoll scalps, and goblin ears in highpass/highkeep will fix that.

Just so you all know ,got the faction up to warmly after a whole hell of a lot of brown nosing.what with giving Novashine in Quenos over 400 gold pieces, two at a time. Two hundred bone chips , two at a time. Also killing god knows how many putrid skeletins, about 250 to 300. My faction was then warmly,AND I then I got the quest. After 40 hours of playing ,I danced around the room with elation, and since I had the scythe and heart, I gave them to him---He said um thank you---AND I GOT NOTHING! LISTEN UP, YOU NEED AT LEAST HIGH WARMLY FACTION. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTASKE I DID =(

Lot's of ph's,they say the spawn time is three and twenty minutes. That was not my experience. The human form of the spawn is pretty strong ,I'm a lvl42 paladin and had a hard time of it . Needed an extra heal from my partner to take him down. Also when I started the quest my faction was indifferant, after 400 gold pieces and several hundred putrid skelly's it is now warmly. You need highly wwarmly to get the shield.I have the heart and the scythe, still working on the faction =(.Also has anyone noticed that where the Lord Grimrot spawns ,there is only one dwarf skeletin.Alot of the time when the dwarf skelly spawns it only spawns for a couple of seconds.I haven't figured if the dwarf is related to the grimrot spawn . Maybe someone else can shed some light on the matter.ONE last detail , killed the human and he had two scythes on him.Killed the skelly form and it had the heart AND the scythe on it . So you can get more than one quest item at q time. GOOD HUNTING
