As image shows, one set of this item is labelled as "quest".

Hopefully the other is not, but we need verification of that please.

***Much confusion caused by these two same-named items over the years, and people being slimy in baz selling one as the other.
Identifying Ashes

OK here is how to tell them apart. All of the credit for figuring this out goes to the Paladins of Norrath Message board.

When checking to see if they are the correct ones do a ;t and then past the link of the ashes with no spaces between the t and the link. The HEX code will appear for the item you linked.

Here are the HEX codes for the ashes both bad and good:

t0007397-00001-00001-00001-00001-0000128E219BAVampyre (Good)

t0031751-00001-00001-00001-00001-0001B04FC7F5Vampyre (Bad)

If the HEX code does not match the good one listed above then they are the fake ones. This method has been proven and tested.

For all those that are buying ashes in the bazaar.

The ashes' codes have been changed.

I have personally verified (through buying a fake set) that the FAKE code starts with 007C07.

To check which one you are looking at, type in ;t<ashes link> without the < >. This will return a string of numbers. If they start with 007C07 they are the fake ashes.

The real ones for this quest start with code 001CE5. I just got one today from Valdanov Zevfeer, but having trouble selling them because people are afraid of the fraud surrounding these. Hope this helps clear things up.

Just finished quest today.

I found both ashes and checked the codes. Neither code listed below was a code for the ashes that I got.

t0007397-00001-00001-00001-00001-0000128E219BAVampyre (Good)

t0031751-00001-00001-00001-00001-0001B04FC7F5Vampyre (Bad)

Both ashes are now stackable and both are not lore.

The correct code does begin with 001CE5. The code for the other ashes begins with 007.

The Lore tag has been removed form these ashes! Beware if you were using HG ashes to keep yourself from being scammed in the bazaar!

Ashes

They are lore and have the same name, but they are not the same thing. I just killed both of them and have both sets of ashes in inventory.

However, Valdanov's ashes are stackable, while Heratius' are not. Since they are lore, it makes no sense, but at least you can tell them apart.

unfortunately SoE decided to not make these lore anymore (at least the fake ones are not lore)...so now the bazaar scammers can get you over and over...I know...I now have 2 fake ones on my trader...:(

I can verify johnlf's reporting that the wrong ashes can show up as being stackable (presumably after being identified). I picked some ashes in the bazaar that showed up as stackable and they were the wrong ashes. It was only 2k and as johnlf said leaving them on my mule will provide a foolproof way to keep from buying them again.

Unfortunately, this is not exactly correct. I purchased some in the bazaar for 2k and then identified them and they are the ashes of HG, but they are now stackable. So it appears that identifying them is what makes them stackable. I am keeping them on my mule because whenever I see any for sale I just run up to the trader and click buy. If they are HG ashes I get a lore item error. This is the only fool proof way to know outside of looting them yourself or IDing them from the trader's cursor, providing he is willing to do that, but you still have to take his word on it because he's the one that gets the message, LOL.
MQ?

Is it possible to get the correct ashes, for instance from a friend, and hand them in to get the shield or do you have to do all the rest of the things aswell?
RE: MQ?

Yes. Usually MQ means doing a turn in with a
NO DROP item. This item is not NO DROP.
Ashes

Its best for the person who is after the Loyalist Shield to loot and delete the Ashes that drop off Heratius Grolden right away.

#1. They are lore and you will not be able to loot the ashes of "Vlad" (Valdanov Zevfeer) if you have HG's ashes on you.

#2. You will keep some low life from trying to sell them in Bazaar as the real McCoy's.

The only way to tell the difference between these ashes is to hold them on your pointer and cast Indentity on yourself or use a Silvery Mask.

Ack, tons of wrong information.

First off, yes the ashes are lore. Since they identify differently from the VZ ashes you can loot both. In fact I did just that today.

Also, you can sell the ashes on the bazaar *cheaply* to prevent scamming. If you have the HG ashes in your inventory or bank and you try to buy a second one, you will get the lore message. If you can buy the ashes while having the HG ash, you just bought the correct "Valdanov" item.
