What is an item REALLY worth?
# Aug 29 2001 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
To everyone that thinks an item is worth what the buyer is willing to pay: A person who is buying an item does not yet own said item. A person who is selling said item sets the price for it.

An item is worth EVERY LAST PENNY that the SELLER is willing to sell it for. Until you are allowed to go and pimpslap somebody for their gear, a person who is selling an item sets the price and it is the buyer's job to either talk the seller down or move on to the next item up for bid. You cannot own what you have not yet bought. Therefore you cannot set a price for it because you do not own it.

I like this point, despite the criticisms raised by others about buyer's demand. Basic econ 101 stuff.

In fact, the truth is a bit more interesting. A person holding the items finds more value in it than another person in the same situation who ISN'T holding the item.

So the claim that the seller knows the value the best has some truth to it, because the seller actually holds the item. And after all, the value of the item that will eventually matter the most to the buyer is its value when owned.

Okay, I'm a geek, I'll admit it.

Yep. You can set the price for whatever you want as the seller. Then when nobody buys it for that price they must just not understand it's value. Oh and please everyone go to EBay and take a look at the toaster that I just put up for auction. Starting bids as low as $600. I loved that toaster. Very useful indeed. And I'm sure that everyone will want it for $600 because that's what I say it's worth, and I'm the seller.

Does something seem not right here? A little silly? EQ is the same. Who here would buy my Drachnid Leg Tip for 2Kpp? Nobody. Why? Because it's not worth 2kpp TO THE BUYER, or even 100pp, not worth it. It's not a difficult concept and I'm not making fun, I'm making sense.

If an item is worth the amount that the seller is asking, I've got a rusty longsword worth 10kpp cause thats what I'm asking. Not really, but you see the problem. The last post states the argument pretty well, I just can't believe egor made the original statement.

The value of an item, is the highest price that the market will bear. If I offer an item for sale, and nobody wants to buy it, it is not worth that much.

Yah, and I do believe that THAT is the truth of it all. NOBODY sells ANYTHING at ANY PRICE that NOBODY wants to PAY, and those who try simply go out of business.
RE: What is an item REALLY worth?
# Sep 25 2001 at 4:21 AM Rating: Good
That's slightly backwards.

An item is worth what SOMEONE is willing to pay for it. Not the lowest price that a potential buyer offers either, but you don't have a monopoly on item availability in EQ, so there are other sellers around.

Let me give you an example. If I try to sell one of these robes for 1kpp, because that's what it used to sell for way back when, does that make its value 1kpp? No -- because people can buy other robes for less money, even Oracle Robes, from other people.

I -could- try to sell it to a Vendor, who will offer me 5-6 PP for it. So does that make its' value 5-6 PP? Again, no.

However, if I go to EC/Gfay/Oasis or wherever, and try to sell it for about 500, I stand a decent chance of getting something like that price (most likely to be with some bartering, but still). If I offer it at 300, it'll go pretty fast. So the "value" of such a robe (on Brell at least) is somewhere between 300 and 600 - how low you choose to go will determine how fast you sell it.

I have to agree that the buyer sets the price.

If an item is particularly useful but is being hawked by just about every other player you run into in NFP, the buyer can certainly command his price. Otherwise, there is another seller a few feet further on, and another, and then another still.

On the other hand, any item that goes up on the block once in a blue moon is another story. In that case, however, a buyer would still have to REALLY want to buy it to fork over the plat without even a little haggling over price.

Haggling is an integral (and arguably the most enjoyable) part of the game of buying and selling, just as a chase is usually more exciting than the catch at its conclusion. Learn to enjoy that part of the game instead of relying on pricing data on any number of web sites like this one; and use shouted PCs as more of a guide, to set the tone of the haggling, than quoted gospel.

Actualy, you're all wrong. It's both the buyer and the seller who set the price. In Eco 101 they tell you that the equilibrium price of an item lies at the intersection of the supply and demand curve. That is, a buyer has a certain schedule of prices that they will pay for an item, and a seller has a schedule at which they will sell an item. When a seller finds a buyer who is willing to pay what he is asking, then they make the deal. That's it. If I don't offer enough for that Robe, and the seller doesn't accept my price, then I value it less than he does. When I find someone who will accept my price, then that's the price. So all this talk of what a TRUE value is is completely wrongheaded. The price of an item is what someone will pay for it and what someone will sell it for. Don't get too complicated with it.

It's a game, dude, not REAL Economics, so Warric was trying to say that all the bartering is a game too and you can roleplay that part instead of pulling out your sliderule and getting all egghead about it

Started off with 0pp on me or in bank, wanted this robe so i had some good items to trade off. gave an ice crystal staff to a guy for one of them purple mana dolls that looked like a skull in my inventory and 200pp. next i sell a DRT for a whopping 150pp! i spend 65pp for a set of icetooth claws from a close friend(they usually sell for 300pp on vallon zek). and finally i trade the icetooth claws and 200pp for the oracle robe.

This robe is worth 250pp on Xev and don't let anyone tell you different. I got one for 200pp and sold it for 250pp, I personally hated the way my Wizard looked in it so I went back to the Flowing Black Robe, hehe.
RE: $$COST$$
# Jul 13 2001 at 5:37 AM Rating: Default
Well i'm telling you different.

200p-250pp will get you an FBR, not an O-robe.

I'm a firm believer in that item value is not worth what a pricing site tells you, but what someone will pay for it.

Someone pays 500p... wow there you go, its worth 500.

However, if bargaining isn't for you, its average is around 350-400pp.
RE: $$COST$$
# Jul 23 2001 at 6:37 AM Rating: Decent
I dont know how long ago this was posted but I can buy a flowing black robe for 75p and an orcale robe for around 200p. So the flowing black robe isn't with 200p and personally I wouldn't pay that much for it anyway. the orcale robe is lucky to sell for 300-350p anymore, unless someone really wants it and has money to spend, but most of us dont.

The price of an item is never fixed. The price of an item is what the buyer wants to give for it. For example, some people might wanna sell this robe for 200pp, lets say even 100pp : this does NOT mean the item is only worth 100pp, and it does NOT mean everyone who is selling it at a higher price is ripping people off. True, prices are going down fast nowadays, because more and more items are being found and people want to sell them fast. But only looking at the stats of the robe (and NOT considering how much the robe goes for on this or that server) I wouldn´t say 400pp is an unfair price.
Great looking

I know a lot of people hate the way this robe looks, but I love it.. I can't wait until I can afford it or go after it. I am gearing my character towards being an Air Conjurer, so the light blue and gold is great.
Lore?

Why is this item lore?

I find it odd, that this item is marked as lore, and the main topic is the price.

Oracle

I got this robe at lvl 11 , got it from a lvl 29 druid. he paid 700pp for it in FP. The crystaline robe isnt any better than the oracle and the Crystaline goes between 5k and 6k. stick with the oracle unless you need a change.
RE: Oracle
# Apr 12 2001 at 4:28 PM Rating: Default
I agree the oracle is the best unless you have the 6k to buy a crystaline robe.

I really want one of these robes. Right now I have a green silken drape, which someone will buy for 200pp, and I also have about 900pp saved up. I don't want to get ripped off...so how much is it worth, and what is a reasonable price???

As posted within the pricing information, whilst listening in on the general spam on /auc in East Commons -- the place to sell EQ on the Ayonae Ro server -- I have witnessed a dramatic price variance:

1st player /auc 800pp for the Robe. Now, I always like to listen to auction to become conversant of (1) what I should be aiming to purchase for my class, (2) and general pricing information.

10 minutes later, 2nd player /auc 400pp for the Robe!? For a non-twinked character such as myself, 400pp is quite a big variance. It definately -does- pay to bide ones time and be a little patient just to establish a *sense* of how much particular items cost in particular zones.

Note: I have heard the Robe on /auc in Kelethin for 800pp. Hmmm. Think I'll bide my time on this one, of which I have plenty whilst I raise the necessary pp to purchase this item.
