Planes of Power
Picked up one of these today, and I have to say that even though it's not the absolute best item I could have in my secondary, I'm still going to use it. Nice raw hitpoints and quite good poison/disease resists which I'm always scrounging for. I'm wearing it for the green glowing graphic, hehe. I'll gladly push to make improvements in my other slots in order to keep this equipped.

Tolkein didnt even want the books published, if you ever read his life story the man saw and lived more then most people ever will. he did everything. the man helped write the oxford dictionary now thats insane
I got this last week and its now in my Secondary slot.
I have to say this so much cooler looking than any shaman useable shield Ive seen. It has a green glow around the hand like some Monk and BST weapons and has green particle effects coming off of it. Definalty a nice change from the normal shield look.

Futhermore, if i remember correctly Tolkien was a Medivial and Church Historian. So alot of the stuff he wrote about came from various legends and such he found while doing research. In a sense he adapted old legends and myths and brought them back to the modern world.
Actually he was a professor of Middle and Old English and a scholar of languages and word origins--- hence he did lots of studies with myths and legends since alot of word origins and meanings can only be studied through such surviving materials. His real talent as a writer was to create a world his characters inhabited-- the geography, languages and societal struggles they had-- on a scale no one had done before in fantasy as a genre and very few have succeeded with since.

Or it could simply be that Treants have been nicknamed "Ents" in almost every fantasy novel or movie (for those non book saavy people)...probably has nothing to do with LOTR.

As far as I know, Tolkein *invented* the term "Ent" when he wrote The Fellowship of the Ring. "Treant" was what TSR called them to avoid copyright violations (which they were happy to commit against Tolkein, but sued excessively to prevent against themselves).
It saddens me how little people realize the extent to which Tolkein invented this entire genre.

Actually Meowse J.R.R. Tolkien did not invent this Genre......Fantasy stories have long survived where do you think wizards and knights and unicorns and Ent's and all magical creatures come from? Why in Ireland olone Fairies have been a large part pof their culture for thousands of years. All Tolkein did was bring this genre from the dark world of superstitions and myths to the light world and made it so people would actually identify with these characters. As for the origin of Ent, I am sure it is not his word for I heard that word long before I read Tolkein and know I did not hear it from a tolkien fan I read it in a an ancient text of an ancient story.
But I will give you the point that TSR did violate sopy right laws a few times.

Wow, this is way the heck off-topic, but you've stepped on a bit of a land-mine here.
Usually, you would be right. Most Fantasy authors borrow most of their material from historical and folk fiction and layer their own twist on top. Tolkein also did this, but his re-visioning of classic Norse, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and otherwise European mythologies was almost entirely shaped by his primary reason for writing about Middle-Earth in the first place: he wanted to construct languages.
Thus, he did borrow from existing terms. "Ent" is actually a good example, being, as you surmisd, an old word. Specifically, the Anglo-Saxon word for "giant". See:

but as with most of the words he used in his constructed vocabulary, the meaning that he gives it is entirely local to Middle-Earth and its vast history of words, languages and dialects.
It's hard to see Tolkein in this way, and accept that he "invented" the "Ent" and many other words and creatures, when so very much of our fantasy heiritage is based on Tolkien's work of only 50 or so years ago.
Certainly the idea of walking, talking trees was not Tolkein's. Nor was the word. But the "Ents" or "Onodrim" in the Evlish were purely his, and when SOE refers to an "Ent Leaf", I suppose they could mean "Giant Leaf" in the Anglo-Saxon, but if the Tolkein Estate wanted to get nit-picky over it, I'm sure they could make the case that in a fantasy genre, refering to a part of a tree as being "Ent"-anything is going to confuse consumers (vis, this page). Of course, then they would have to demonstrate that this is not fair use... hmm Sony having to defend fair use... I think I like it ;)
