All the classes listed above should have a chance on the shield. Probably none will use it all the time but all will have a use for it.

As a warrior I went 65 levels and 4 years without a shield, I know now it has become something to put on my priority list, if only to use the /shield ability more effectively.

Or if I can keep agro with only a good main hand weapon, then why not use the extra AC ans stats of the shield? Warriors arent the dps in a group so as long as I keep the agro its fine. Same goes for Paladins / SK when tanking.

Rangers enjoy the stats as they use their bow, and so do rogues who rely mostly on their main hand to dps.

The more I look at it the better I find this item. It might be a little weak considering the zone, but then it's not dropped by a raid boss either!

well, as a warrior i know that DPS obviously isnt my primary objective. Tanking high end raid mobs REQUIRES that you do not dual weild, unless you like getting hit for 2k ripostes way more than you need to be. This shield, however, isnt a shield i would use unless i had something like a BoC+anger3 aug since although the stats are nice, the lack of a furious bash effect.

Well, you almost make a good point. But why do they make shields that are warrior only with furious bash on them??? And my main is a ranger. I keep a shield of rainbow hues and stained axe of the scions in my bag of toys for when I wanna shoot my bow. Stained axe is Veng II and shield is 20 to all saves. There's nothing wrong with dual wielding classes having loot rights to shields.

it'd be useful as an off hand for a bard with a main hand drum, doing resists at a raid...

You've obviously not heard of the /shield ability then.
using shields for rangers

Nearly any 56+ ranger is going to have their offhand epic: Swiftwind. While this is not the best offhand weapon, it is probably the single best ranger-item for Archery. 40% haste +30 Atk offhand is better than any 41% haste item, and parse after parse shows that bow DPS is better with the additional 30 atk granted by Swiftwind.

Combine that with better STA, only 2 less Dex, and I'd rather have Swifty offhand any day.

I can see your point when you are dealing with *this* shield. My statement was meant as more of a broad generalization about how people are complaining about rangers being listed as able to use some of the higher-end shields in general and thinking that they should be included on rolls for aforementioned shields. If you had read the entirety of my post instead of just skimming to a part you can attack, you would see that I said that at the very beginning of the statement. When I'm talking about other shields, a great example would be the Twice Forged Steel Bulwark (I think that's right) that drops in BoT and is also no drop. It's something like 50ac 15str 15dex 18 to saves and 100hp/mana. Would that 15str/15dex be enough to increase bow dmg more than the swiftwind's 30atk? I'm not sure because I'm not a ranger that parses bow damage. Do I feel better that my puller has 50ac 100hp 18 to saves more than he did before with this shield equiped? The answer to that questiong from a cleric's point of view is a resounding yes. So when you get high enough level to go to BoT and this shield drops when you're in a group there and choose to let it rot, that's up to you. If you want to let a war/pal/sk loot it because you think it will do them more good than it will to you, then I geniunely applaud your generousity and think that there should be more players like you in this game. I'm just saying that rangers have a viable right to looting it, especially when for most people these levels they are hardly ever going to use a shield, that is if they don't have better shields than the one that drops all ready. Thanks for the post btw Vekaras =).

Just some info 30 atk > then 15 str and dex any day, well that is unless you are at the 250 atk cap, then its moot cause this sheild is a big PoS compaired to the rest of your gear.

Seriously though having a ranger loot this may be nice for very rare circumstances, but you wont see much of it till they code some of those nice 1 handers with a 1 to 1 ratio or better for use with sheilds only.

Sorry, I didn't know there was an atk cap? What is it set at for melee characters? I'm going to guess that 250 is a typo, since I'm over 1k atk and I'm a cleric. Is it 2500 atk? I shudder if that is the case because I've been grouping with rangers that are over 2500 atk and didn't even know they were that ubah! Is the atk cap set at the same for all classes or is it something that varies depending on classes (ie rogues have a higher atk cap than say a wizard)? Any information on that would be helpful because to tell you the truth I really have no idea how atk works and all the nuances behind all that, all I know is what I see from melee that I group with normally and the things that they explain to me. Believe me I was just like you people when I first saw a ranger with a shield and was going 'wtf are you doing?'.... I was just hoping to pass some of that information that was shed upon me to you people and maybe clear up all the stigmata that 'Class A' can only do 'Thing B' and 'Method C'. I didn't intend to start a flaming thread, just stating some facts.
To respond to your post in particular Wuldayen, I will try to state this again : I am not talking about this shield in particular, although I do consider it an OK shield. My statement was based on the comment *way* down at the bottom of the page about someone ranting about how rangers are listed as able to use this because they *probably* are not of the ranger persuation and much like many of the people that post on this site said "I am class such-and-such, so this equipment is obviously best for (surprise) my class". As for the 1/1 ratio with 1h weapons to be used with this shield... my whole point for rangers wanting to equip a shield is because they don't melee anymore once they obtain the AA abilities Endless Quiver and Archery Mastery 3. A ranger with these skills would take a fine steel sword with 20 to all stats before they would take a 20/20 with no stats on it because the dmg/dly on the weapon is a moot point. You name does sound familiar though Wuldayen, do you play on Bristlebane? If so, if you need a good bow for when you get AM3/EQ and some arrows, I have a 250 fletching skill and lots of components sitting around in bags that we might be able to get together and see if we can get something hammered out for you =) Thanks again for you post Wuldayen.

Aye, there is a worn atk cap of 250, sorry for the confusion. Its possible they may equip an uber shield but then again I doubt it. SoE still has not fixed LoS bugs, so rangers still need to do their damage to a walled mob or a short one up close and personal. A sheild would only hurt melee dps in that situation. Its always up to the player on how the want to play though, you may see some rangers running around with sheilds.

As for lining me up with a bow, thats pretty generous of you, I am on Zeb though =(

250 is correct however its the WORN Attk cap... as in you can only get 250 atk from items such as Vengeance items etc there is no hard cap on actual attack. At least not that has been obtained to my knowledge.

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted something =), but I've seen so many people complaining about these new shields, I just would like to take a second to help people clear up any pre-conceptions about these new shields and why rangers are talking about being able to use them. Now people are talking about and worrying about pre 59 rangers that use shields when in an xp-group and melee. That's really a moot point, since these people are crazy and would never make it high enough to get something like this, let alone a group. At level 59+ though, things change for a ranger with the AA abilies called Endless Quiver and Archery Mastery 1, 2, and 3. With these AA skills, rangers dps becomes insanely better when they are standing back and plinking mobs with arrows than when they are melee'n, and I know many rangers that at level 65 are probably considering never melee'n again in their career. That is why I can agree with the rangers (I can't believe I'm saying this) that these shields for the most part are excellent ranger equipment because of the excellent stats boosts in AC/Str/Dex/HP/Mana/Resists, and would probably go as far as to say that rangers should be getting these defaulted to them in *need* settings. There, I said it. A long-known ranger oppressor saying that rangers *should* be getting something defaulted to them because they need it most. I guess because it will make my job easier when they are harmony pulling for me in BoT =). Good thing there are still druids around for me to make fun of.

<Edit> Oh, a rogue seen using this would be shot on sight. You are there for dps, period.

Ya... until the realized that their "shaman" can't buff, heal, slow, debuff... Would be great if they could pull it off.

... convince them that there really is such a thing as a Dark Elf shaman... lol.
Ah, but raids

You are forgetting that most rangers don't melee at all in raids. We use archery and so the only reason we wield something at all in primary or secondary is for stats. This would be nice, especially because of the dex, ac, hp, and saves.

RE: Dude!
# Apr 02 2003 at 11:51 PM Rating: Default
I'm going to hope that is pure sarcasm. While I won't say I wouldn't group with a Rogue/Ranger that doesn't Dual Wield (as a Ranger with a 2h weapon isn't too uncommon)...but such a waste of DPS if either of those two don't dual wield (or use a massive 2h). Using a 1h and shield on one of them is just...wrong.

I can't even really see a warrior using this...but then, I'm a hybrid lover, so I may be a bit biased. But this screams PAL/SHD. Both of them could put every stat on this shield to good use.

edit - forgot to ask...there isn't a listing as to what drops this/where it comes from. Anyone have any ideas?

My warrior would use this in some situations. You ever use /shield to protect a caster? Works much better when you have a shield equipped. Ever have a small group where the hybrid healer is lom, and the main tank is getting wasted? The extra protection of a shield may keep the tank alive long enough for the other party members to finish it off (or, alive long enough for the healer to regain enough mana to heal).

Bashing has a much better chance to interrupt a casting mob than kick (I've got a short warrior...needs a shield to bash). Switch to a shield when the bash timer is ready to go and mob is casting, switch back to off-hander after the bash.

And, there are other situations where wielding a shield is a better choice than using an off-hander.

I would definately group with a Rogue or Ranger--or any other class that can use this--if they were wielding a shield and if they used it appropriately.

No way was he kidding, I mean just look at those stats, any ranger would be happy to give up about a third of their melee dps to be the first on the block to have one of these babies.
