Wind instruments are for the Arias as well. When I got IIM (with epic) it allowed me to cure most Ssra curses without swapping in a flute. Since only the MT gets a dedicated RGC caster, being able to cure myself helps me a lot. So that extra 20% can make a difference. I'm not in the elementals yet (curse you, Rallos), but it sounds like resists and cures are important there.
Extra 20% can make a difference, but boost over epic of 1.8 to 2.0 on shoulders is only an 11% difference. Even worse if you have IIM, boost becomes 2.6 to 2.8 which is less than an 8% difference.
As a bard I would pass on these to a hybrid. I haven't used a wind based song since I got Fading Memories and Tiny Cloak of Darkest Night.
Granted there aren't many better shoulders than these, but I would rather save my merit for gear with a more useful mod.
Wow, another genius. Think for a moment, then do a little research about the elemental plains. Let me give you a hint, there is a mask that replaces the bard epic for singing mod. No bard epic means you have to get a flute for the few songs we use it for. So, go buy flute, go get a flute off a raid mob with good stats, switch your weapons around to equip SSS or, get some of the best shoulders in the game that is also a wind instrument. As a bard I would love these shoulders and would NEVER pass them up so a sk/pally/rng could use the other effect. Bards get loot screwed enough being a plate class and watching all the vengeance items and focus effect items go to other classes so why not let us keep one of the few items made for us?
How often have you used invis since getting shoulder? Your whole point about the singing mod mask is moot. What was that about when refering to a wind instrument mod? Epic is more than singing mod, more importantly it is percussion for hos/occ, stringed for regen, and brass for warsong. Getting mask doesn't change the need for the rest.
I think you are missing his point. Yes, the epic has a mod for all instrument types. But when you get high enough into the planes you would rather swap out your epic for better weapons out there, but can't becuase you need the singing mod.
If you get the mask with the singing mod, then you can drop your epic and get items for each instrument that have an even better modifier than the SSS has. It is only 1.8 and there are better mods out there on other weapons and equipment.

There is always one more imbecile than you planned for.
I agrree theres no way this should Default to a bard. bards will use aura + wind insrument effect Rng and SK will use Conservation and aura Pals rarely use conservation and always aura Warrior/rogue would only use aura.
There is a Pro and Con on this shoulder item having a wind instrument AND usuable by more than just a bard.
As many guilds only have 2-4 bard mains, you will quickly equip those bards with these shoulders. And if you continue to farm this guy, you won't have shoulders rotting. At the same time, since this is wearable by more than just a bard and the added effects make it very desirable you just can not default this shoulder to a bard. Throw in the fact that this may be a rare drop will make it even more difficult for a bard much less any usable class to get it.

Maybe if you stopped to think about what you were saying, you'd realize that even if clerics were on the list of useable classes, that they would not get preference on this item. First of all, they are a wind instrament if that pic really is correct. Bards would be first hands down unless they all had something similar. Not too familiar with bard gear tho. If you take that effect out of consideration, it would still be more likely to go to a hybrid because the focus effect is related to damage spells, not healing. Since when does a cleric nuke on a raid? I'd melee before nuking and I wouldn't even do that unless it was a gimp raid with some overkill force.
So the Daring effect is random so it only procs for bards? (wind instrument) Is that correct? Just confused about a wind instrument you wear for protection, can I sling a guitar over my back and get some ac? :)
Yeah...sharkcartilage plated shoulderpads just wouldn't be the same. Maybe sharkTOOTH plated shoulderpads...well, in any case, I'm never going to get these anyway. -_- Still, some of the other posters, most notably Yalingz and natocmdr (<--?) have a point: if snakes can kick, why can't sharks have bones? Oh well, I won't get too upset about it. Beats the hell out of what I'M wearing (Adamantite Shoulderpads (sp?)). EDIT: Snakes that kick...the ultimate justification.
Think he's talking about plate armor... Armor that's usable by pal/shd/brd has almost always been also usable by cler/war. It is an interesting combination of wearing classes. I haven't seen any other item only usable by the hybrid classes.
Actually, these are "plated" armor, not "plate" armor. Plated armor, I believe, is usually comprised of a chain garment, upon which sections of plates are overlayed, sort of like scales on a snake. The overall effect is much lighter and more maneuverable than full plate, but protects much better than chain. As for items only usable by hybrid classes, they do exist, though they aren't very prevalent.
Umm gear is about the only thing a warrior has to look forward to. He gets his last skill (riposte) I believe at 30 and also his first discipline (resist). Next Disc at 40 then from 52-60 just one per level. No new spells or skills other than that so gear is a warriors life! =)
2/10 = 1/5 = 20% The world revolves around making a percentage out of things. Your economics/business studies teachers must have been very upset with you. =)
Edit : And all of you people looking at different classes being able to wear this item...stop it. The bards in your raid will kill you if you even suggest rolling for it, and frankly it would be justified. In fact, if the looter was taking this instead of a bard then inform your nearest bard support group and we'll arrange a RL lynching...oh yes we will.
