That would make the focus actually -5% as there is a 5% decay on each level above the max which is set to 44 for the focus.

A decent charm but really nothing can beat the charm you get in the newbie zone now. In my opinion there really is nothing other than the kobold charm and wooden figurine. On the other hand since PoP has had the backflagging change, there are really no open raids going for flags anymore so maybe the charm that gives a good amount of stats for knowing old languages takes the place of the PoP one now. Just a shame LDoN was ruined for lvl 70, no matter what charm you happen to get the LDoN augment for them still adds a neat stat boost...

That charm becomes worthless after a while, though. The higher the level you get the more the stats decreases.

Any caster would want the Tainted Heartstone. Worse for warriors, though. =/

i know this post is old, but i can say for a fact that the noob charm dose not get weaker as you level, still has full stats at 69, when the charm first came out you had to do so maney quest befor it hit full power

Should I do this quest as a 35 ranger with around 170 dex. Also, are the items needed no-drop?

Ok to both u and paladingirl, you guys are too low to kill the mobs for quest, all pieces are no drop. 3 pieces drop off mobs in their 40's and the 4th drops off mobs in the 30's, which by the way, i have been searching for an entire week (mettalic oil) In theory u can just wait for someone to shout its dropped, most creature in the zones u need (Dulak and Gunthak) dont see invis, but thats only if u can stand waiting for hours, upon days, apon weeks for all 4 pieces to drop, or at least thats what i think. I think im gonna give it up and just group in Crypt of Nadox, im bound to get another charm in the time it takes to find this oil. but if u want to do it anyway heres the link to the quest

Xoomix's Quarterstaff is no drop. I got it just last night, someone shouted it was rotting, so I figured what the hell. My character that has it is a 51 Druid. Granted, our dex isn't that high (like a bard's or such), but hey, having something that wasn't there before is better than nothing. I hear too many people whinning about the charms not being that great. Consider this, would you rather have at least something, vice nothing?

I agree. I like putting this on when I need a little extra bit of STR to carry loot back. I also like having a charm that works outside of LDoNs, since LDoNs arent that popular on my server anymore.
RE: Hmm...
# May 08 2003 at 1:06 PM Rating: Decent
I think the people who complain about the charms are looking at effort vs. reward. The charms out there don't grant much of a bonus unless you have certain stats quite high so for most people the effort of the quest when they may get like a 1 to a stat seems kinda weak for the effort involved in the quest.
Tinkering
# Mar 08 2003 at 10:04 PM Rating: Default
Have any tinkerers done this? I'm wondering if it has any tinkering stats if skills are high enough. I assume all the pieces of this are no-drop and my tinkerer is only level 40 wizzy, so may be a bit of a challenge to collect without a group.

Of all my characters, my paladin and my ranger have higher dex than the rest. With either of those classes, I'm often the group's puller. I usually pull with a small stun, or snare, occasionally with root. Those spells are all below level 40. Having long range spells for pulling is a good thing.

Notice that the stats are STR and MANA? That says hybrids to me.
RE: Nice hybrid charm

Pull with DoT to dmg on the way without taking all day to get back to group.
RE: Nice hybrid charm

This may work on moss snakes but try using that same strat on PoP mobs.
RE: Nice hybrid charm

bad habit to get into.

Damaging a mob yer pulling at high level can often mean you get summoned and have to pull a mob who's summoning you every few seconds back to the group. Quite a pain.

yea, but go buy a moonstone ring, better bonuses get the extended range from the get go.
RE: Nice hybrid charm
# Mar 10 2003 at 8:33 PM Rating: Default
A ranger who doesn't pull with a bow?!?!?!

I prefer to not pull with snare, to get the mob to the group as fast as I can. That way, there's less chances of adds.
RE: Nice hybrid charm
# Feb 07 2005 at 12:08 AM Rating: Decent
Once a Ranger has the Jolt spell, pull with that instead of your bow. It is a quick cast, reduces what little aggo you get from the pull, and once the MT hits the mob, they immediately get aggro instead of you. The trick to this is to let your group know about this method AHEAD of time, then tell the tank to hit the mob first to pull it off of you. The first player to make contact with the mob gets the aggro, so a simple arrow, stun, or any sk spell will do the job.
RE: Nice hybrid charm
# Mar 13 2003 at 8:02 AM Rating: Good
Good point, but in large places with sometimes sparce mobs (so almost no chance of adds) it really helps to have the mob get to the group in longer time. The casters could possibly nuke or debuff more and the ranger could turn it into a pincushion, all before the mob gets to the group for the main fight. So no hurt to the group but pain to the mob, sounds good to me.
RE: Nice hybrid charm
# Mar 25 2003 at 5:27 AM Rating: Default
No way, get it into the meat grinder as fast aas possible. Slow pulls == slow exp. Half your group will be fidgeting and twiddling their thumbs while they wait for the mob to stroll in.
Melee is better than nuking for sustained damage output...especially if the meleers are sitting on their hands. Nuking DURING melee is great, but delaying melee to nuke/shoot arrows is not.
Snare-pulling is just annoying.

As a SK I completely disagree with that comment. I'd much prefer to have a mob debuffed (and not hitting me as hard) and nuked or dotted (hitting me less often) before it gets to me.
What it really comes down to is that however you pull the creature, it has the same amount of hitpoints, and the more of them you can take off before it starts hitting the tanks the better. I'm sure any healers will love the extra mana that comes from less casting, just in case you get any adds. Just my opinion of course...
RE: Nice hybrid charm
# Dec 29 2003 at 12:13 PM Rating: Decent
I've gotta say that I pull both ways, dependent upon the situation. My main (57th level druid) will usually snare and DoT to his heart's content on the way back to a group....if we have a great tank, or if I'm soloing and want to drag the mob back to a safer point to root/rot. If I'm not sure that the tank can pull aggro after all that damage, I'll usually pull with a DoT directly...easier for him to get it off me, and doesn't take forever (and risk more adds) dragging it back to camp. THEN I snare it back at camp. My low level ranger will pull with snare if he's soloing (fear kiting, etc), but will pull with his bow if it's a crowded zone and in a group. With all that said, this would be a great item for him when he gets high enough to go for it...makes the solo a little easier, and more time to get those arrows off before the mob closes to melee.

as far as I know, focus effects don't affect bard songs. Maybe they changed that while I was away from eq a few months though

You're correct, Alludrael: focus effects do not have any effect on bard songs at all.

Flowing Thought does indeed work for bards. However, it's not a Focus Effect, so my statement stands.

Useful effect?
# Mar 07 2003 at 5:20 AM Rating: Default
Just wondering how many sub-44 casters (ok sub 50, since they might still be usign sub-44 spells) have a dex of over 200? Certainly up to now it has not been a useful stat & I for one would be unwilling to make a major investment in stat gear to get this effect.

Now, if it were extended range IV, the situation might be different
RE: Useful effect?
# Jun 30 2003 at 4:24 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a level 61 paladin and I frequently pull with cease - thats right cease, a level 9 spell. I like pulling things with a high agro, low cast time low mana spell. I have (and sometimes use) a stonewood bow, but while the damage is high, the agro isn't. There are a ton of items with extended range out there, but I have to sacrifice a lot of stats to get them. with this I can use my 260 dexterity and get a little more range on my pull. Also sometimes in PoN i like pulling the nightmares off the cliff, I can't do that with my bow unless everything aligns just right, but with some more range i just target and cast to get the ones in the back.
RE: Useful effect?
# Mar 07 2003 at 9:17 AM Rating: Default
Just a reason to cast boon on yourself if a chanter, or focus/avatar if you're a shaman. And Clerics... many at high lvls are already meleeing with Yaulp, which has a huge dex bonus. It also really helps with all those insane procs they are giving casters (ice comet proc on a 1HB?) heehee. Stat gear isn't the only way to get dex up, just get buffed. With starting stats and no dex gear many casters could probably top 200. Feral Avatar adds what, 125 all by itself. Add that to the huge bonus from the boon lines or Yaulps and you're good to go. (and as for the sub-44 casters that have dex over 200, I think the first boon spell is under there, shammys still have dex buffs below 44, and it's a benefit to those clerics casting CH no matter what lvl yes?)

As a chanter, if I am soloing, I like the idea of extended range. In a group, it doesn't really matter to me. And while soloing, I am certainly not going to use a spell slot for Boon. It's rare that I use it in a group, and never at all while soloing.
I'll stick with a moonstone ring for now, thanks.

Well, if a shaman can cast Focus, or even HoS for that matter, then Extended Range II is hardly useful. You're better off going after the Supple Scale Wristband in KC.

Notice it's extended range II with 265 dex... Once someone posts the max stats on this (with 305 Dex) Im betting it will have extended range III. That will be helpful to those in their low 60s... putting the ER item in their charm slot and still help a majority of the spells they use.
