Got this to drop on one of the progressive servers and indeed the effect is Shadow of Firefist. Shadow of Firefist doesnt appear to do anything. Anyone know why the earring would have an effect that doesnt do anything and if it will do something at a later date?

This item gives a passive AA in the general tab that gives 15 attack permanently. You can also use the item to fill a buff slot. This is coming from Phinnigel Server.

Just to add some more detail to this. I have this item and right clicked it on my character on phinigel.

This didn't change the item at all, still named Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring and the effect is still called Grim Aura. However the buff it gives you is called Shadow of the Firefist which is permanent.
I got 2 AA's under the General tab. One called Item: Disabled Item Abilities 1/1 which you can hotkey and the other is Item: Grim Aura 2/3 which you can't hotkey. I've added both of these AA's to our AA database.

This is now a permanent effect. Shadow of Firefist Permanent.

So the effect was changed or grim aura shows differently due to some other change?

Few are lucky and get it on first drop. Some within a few hours. On average it takes 4-5 hours to get a Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring, if you keep clearing the fort nonstop. Over the years I have farmed at least 50 of theese earrings. Every time I deside this is my last. It's such a boring camp. But I just keep coming back from time to time, hoping to get lucky very quick, but always end up staying for at least 3-4 hours.
I have found it on first kill one time. One time I found 2 right after eachother. But the rest of the times I camp him is no fun at all. In the session I'm in as I write this, I'm going on my 9th hour. The last 4 clears of the fort I haven't even seen Grachnist pop.
When I'm really serious and I have the zone to myself, I camp the fort, all 3 ruins, the lake and the open 9spawn area.
With a bind in the right spot and gate ready to use you can time it so you kill the last mob on the route when the first one is about to pop again.
Just keep beating the corpse and eventually you will get it.

Does the effect on this item stack with Pally combat proc self buffs? What about Shaman stuff like Champ, Cougar, Lynx etc...
It appears to based this Lucy Stacking data. Mostly it is overwritten by Ranger "Strength of the ---" line, Beastlord "Spiritual V---" line, "Yalp" line and a few orther random ATK spells.
As of today I do not see any of the Paladin or Shaman spells you mentioned on that list.

Just got to WW and killed the gobby , dropped earring , 5 mins later got another >.< lucky day for me
32 kills to get 1. just keep clearing the fort and the ones accros the bridge a spawn without atleast one grachnist was very rate 2-3 was common never had more then 4 in one full spawn

Yeah, I know these "I got it on my first kill!" posts aren't all too helpful, especially to those of you who are camping this item, but that's what happened to me. I headed over to the goblin fort to burn an hour or two attempting for this neat little clicky. Upon nearing the fort I saw Grachnist on track and soon located him at the front of the fort (where the wooden, erm, pikes are situated). After kiting him a bit, the messenger jumped in, which was much more difficult than Grachnist himself, but I mezzed him and finished my business.
Iksar Scaled Gloves and the Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring dropped on the first kill in less than five minutes! I'm not usually this lucky, but sometimes EverQuest isn't as much as a time sink as usual!

Took like 15-17 kills of that named gob to get this earring. He spawned inside or near the fort (across the bridge), not at the small goblin outposts bit far from the fort.
The spawn cycle is totally random. As someone mentioned, he sometimes spawns like within 30 sec or 1min after he's killed. You just got to kill all the place holders quick to let him spawn- this isn't necesasry but makes him pop sooner. If you have LV60-70ish toon/friend, bring him/her to clear the fort and the one across bridge. Of course you can bring a full LV30ish group to both loot and xp at the fort but I musta warn you all - you just have to kill that particular named (Destroyer) again and again to get the earring. He does drop Iksar scaled gloves often (like near 100& drop?), so if you are after that gloves for yourself / younger alts camping the fort may not be boring.

I've gotten 2 of these in my time. The first one took me a whole weekend.. probably killed him around 200 times. I was about to give up and he finally dropped it. The second time he droped it after only 5 kills. Still sell pretty good on my server for between 8 and 10k

I was unlucky enough to meet him when I was level 12, just running through WW to find a hexdoll for cudgel quests.
Found him near the 2nd Iksar fort as you come in from FOB

is there any way to speed up the spawn rate on this guy???? hit makeing me mad ive camped the fort for 2 days now and no earring. really makeing me mad.

what i usually do is AE Debuff everything and to aggro as many as i can then i let my skelly take care of the rest, life tapping when lich is about to kill me. i managed to get up to 5 at a time.

That mother f**king goblin messenger just will not quit coming at you. It has no RP reason to be higher level than the actual camp named, and by all rights it should be a rare spawn like the other named and yet every 17 minutes there it is again to ruin your camp. I just can't imagine what prompts people to be this stupid and throw something in like this that kills a nice solo camp and gives non sow people a nice deadly walk back to their corpse from PoK, oh and lets not forget Spirit of Eagle is overpowering to a low level trying to get their corpse so you don't get that either...

goblin messenger has nothing to do with Grachnist spawn time. Grachnist can spawn anywhere from the main outpost to the tiny ones to jsut walking down the path way i have found him all over. the main outpost is the best way to camp him however because you wont have to go to hell and back to see if hes up. just run all over kill everything in the main outpost and he will spawn many many times most I have was 3 up at once well 4 but 3 were in the camp.
i feel bad for you guys who camped this guy for 30 hours.... I headed over to Warsliks with a 49 ranger and a 37 monk (myself). He was already popped when we came. I dropped him, he had gloves on him. He popped again 5 minutes later. Dropped gloves. Popped one second after i dropped him, dropped gloves. 5 minutes later he popped again and dropped earring. I think the goblin messenger has something to do with his spawn... every time we killed the messenger Grach would spawn foerm 5 seconds to a minute after it.
So im not saying it spawns him, but you should drop the messenger every time you see him up anyway, because it worked for us i do believe. Good luck getting it

I have more than 30 hrs in this camp this week and I got one earring. This is a real rare drop GL on the camp, it sure is a rough one.

Wow...I spent over 12 hours at the fort and killed well over 100 Grachnist's without a single earring. Today I spend 4 hours and get 2 to drop back to back. Go figure =p

I was just taking a stroll through warslik, and bam i see a named gobbie who cons green... not knowing what i was doing i just went up and killed the bugger, easy kill for a 54 necro btw. He dropped this earring, i was pretty happy, it sells for about 15k on morden rasp, not bad for just dinking around :)

Why is this worth so much? I wouldn't think Grim Aura (+10 ATK) is that potent.
still, i dont think it's worth the 15k people are selling it for. i just dont get it.

Because the effect is triggered, and gives what is known as a Junk buf.
There are a number of raid encounters in EQ where the Mob casta an AE dispell (dragons liked doing this). This would strip all the bufs off you as the fight progressed; not a good thing.
So what you do is get an item like this, which gives you a triggered buf. You put it in as your first buf, then get real bufs after it. When you get dispelled, you reclick the earring, and bingo you have your junk buf back ready for the next dispell. Your real bufs are not stripped.

Why is this listed as being found in LoIO also, when the mob it drops off of is found in War.Woods?
I have farmed this earring a lot. I have looted atleast 7-10 of them, and the average is probably one per 30-40 Grachnists'... I can sell for an average of 5k (on luclin, more right now) and if I farm every spawn I can, constantly, my success is about 1 earring every 4 or 5 straight hours of farmage. Thats 1k an hour, or more, average.
I just did this strange little boring farm again recently cause nothing was going on, but I mostly did this as a 50th-55th Monk for cash for upgrades.
The way the little buggers run at low health is irritating. If that bugs you a lot then use a SOW potion.

On the average it will drop in about 20-30 kills I would estimate. Ive gotten 2 of these so far in the past 6 months. I dont farm them for cash as its a major PITA but you could I guess. The trick is kill the whole fort area as fast as you can and keep it dead. He pops pretty regularly. The last earing that dropped for me he was one of the guards at the rear entrance of the fort.

Look guys I have like killed this guy almost 100 times( and no FREAKING earring.) Trust me when I say its easier to just go buy it. I could just buy it anytime I want but on Xegony it goes for 20k pp and I was just going to try to get it for free by killing the mob that drops it..no exaggeration I probably killed him almost 100 times and not 1 earring.... its EXTREAMLY rare drop i would have to say.. and I did this without stop..killing him over and over... also I have not read too many of the post below mine so.. I will give you an insight on this guy.. He can spawn like anywhere in the little huts.. not just inside the city area place also to near by 3 other spots outside city.... so if you want to waste your time he is EASY to make spawn...... just freaking kill like everything all the goblins in the city and in the surrounding like ruins or whatever you want to call them and go Back and forth looking for him... he spawns all over those places just so you know not just spawing in the city area... good luck only reason I was TRYING to get it was just out of principle of the thing 20 k is kinda steap and I just wanted it for the instant clicker for raids on mobs that Debuff Instant Click buff.. hope the info helps>>^_^

the post below me is prolly pissed because he has camped Grachnist so many times and has never seen one or cant afford it.Or just dosnt understand that mobs in zones other than newbie zones debuf and raids mobs debff as well so befor you say a item is crap make sure you know what most people use it for there not using it for the effect like you would be.so take yourself out of field of bone you newb get yourself fully buffed and go to a zone where mobs debuff and you will see.
