GFR Whiskers are elusive
# Sep 05 2004 at 3:57 PM Rating: Decent
Even a half-elf ranger has a tough time and its newbie armor. At level 11 I needed 2 whiskers to complete my Gloves. I was halfway to level 12 and actually levelled up (killing blue targets while waiting for more GFR's to spawn). Pretty ridiculous! I thought I would have a tough time getting the silk threads - no problem there just bopped on over to halas and killed of tons of the hordes of spiderlings there.

Half Elf rangers have the best of both worlds!

The half elf rangers (and druids, too, I guess) have it the best.

I spent about 9 hours hunting down the GFR's and nary a GFRW did I turn up. <FRUSTRATION! ANGER!, etc.>

So I hied over to GF and CB and did the Trueshot quests, and in a night of farming/looting/vendor shopping, got everything but the tunic.

Now I just have to get an orc fibula for the tunic, and the folks who haunt CB are very kind to let you loot it. I do the same, doing an ooc for whatever drop I don't need.

Half Elves may be acultural, but there are certain advantages, too!
all day

I got 6 giant field rat whiskers today, however it did take me 9 hours of play to get them all
The whiskers don't frigging exist!

Okay, it's been 15 hours straight and I still can't find a GD Giant Field Rat Whisker. I am a Ranger and I can track these SOB's. I've found the pelts and EVERYTHING I need for my newbie armor except the whiskers. I'm about to give up if I don't at least find one, but yes, they need to make them more common. It's frigging NEWBIE armor for cryin' out loud.

Just spent an hour helping a newbie druid find these. I found that hanging around the zone line to North Qeynos worked well. When there were no giant field rats to be found, I killed the large field rats - giant field rats seemed to appear shortly thereafter which makes me suspect the large field rats are placeholders. In an hour (at most), I tracked down 6 giant field rats, 2 of which dropped whiskers. All in area between the zone line to N Qeynos and south of the crossroads.
Don't need them

By the time you find all these rediculous whiskers, you don't need the armor anymore. You can either buy better or yould be high enough lvl to loot better. I killed 18-20 of these today working non-stop on them alone ALL DAY, 8+ hours, and got only 2 whiskers.
Annoying GFR

You know, they say that they have made the GFRW more common, but I think they have made GFR less common. I must have gone around the normal spawn areas (by blackburrow, the guard tower and by the edge of the Zone) plus a good portion of the rest of the zone for close to 2 1/2 hours and only found about 6 or 7 GFR's. I think EQ should either a) make GFR's more common (like as common as willowisps or LFR) b) make GFRW even more common or c) undo the NO DROP on GFRW (so that people can sell and trade them) or all three...too bad they won't.

If they've made the GFRW more common, then why, after three days of hunting for 8 hours each day, do I only have 2 GFRWs? They lied when they said they've made them more common.
GFRW

Half-elf rangers need a total of 6 and Human druids need a total of 6. So far, I've noticed that on Tuesday nights, the rats seem to pop up a lot more (now that i've given away my secret). All i have left are the two for my druid gloves... **sigh** now if only people would stop /ooc'ing that they want to buy these no drop items....

Giant Field Rats

GFR Whiskers are used for the nubie Druid armor quests from Surefall, and they are rediculously rare abd No Drop. I believe they only fall of Giant Field Rats (not Large Field Rats as it says above). The Giant Field Rats drop both Giant Rat Whiskers and Giant Field Rat Whiskers, so don't be fooled when you get just Giant Rat Whiskers.I have killed a good 50 GFRs and have gotten only 1 GFR Whisker. The total need for all the armor pieces is 5 or 6.

I don't know about the Druid newbie armor quests, but you need 5 of these to get all the pieces of the Human Ranger (and I think half-elf Ranger) quests. I've hit 11th level and only found 3, despite dropping everything to hunt GFRs whenever I found one on my tracker. These are most definitely the hardest pieces to find...you can buy pretty much everything else, or else its easily acquired, and a good group can take down Yollis using good tactics.

So much for those Pine Scout Gloves!

Ok this is my 3rd edit on this post and it should be bang-on now. You will need assorted pelts which are reasonably easy to get, but I have listed the GFR items required to make these quest items that give you some additional stats.

I have a lvl 9 Ranger who req GFR whisks for 'Pine Scout' armor too and you need the GFR pelts also as they are req to make some of the items. Don't lug your curing kit with you either, keep it in the Hold along with the other req items to save on weight. Most of the 'Ruined Gnoll' stuff also req for the patterns can be purchased from Merchants in Qeynos. If you can't afford it you need to hit Black Burrow, which is pretty treacherous for a char at this level that is not in a group of at least 3-4.

Items in the set,
CAP
0 GFR whisk
BOOTS
2 GFR whisk
PANTS
0 GFR whisk, 1 GFR pelt
SLEEVES
0 GFR whisk, 1 GFR pelt
TUNIC
0 GFR whisk, 1 GFR pelt
GLOVES
2 GFR whisk
BRACERS
1 GFR whisk

I must have killed 30+ and have only recovered 2 sets so far. Better to hunt in the hills near Black Burrow as the guards near Qeynos have a really annoying habit of killing these before you do.
