what is it you combine to get the final product, I'm a bit confused.

combine the emblem, swatch, and pattern? or does the needle need to be in there as well. I'll be buying the products to combine so I'm a bit stuck on the needle whether you combine it or you use it to make the swatches

You need to combine the emblem, the swatch(es), the pattern and a needle inside the kit the dorf gives you.

You will get the needle back after the combine though; saves you 115p each time you make a piece of armor at least.

You need to be lvl 55 now to make these, at least i presume it is same for all classes as i could make the ornate with my 55 rogue.

No usually only Chest and Leg pieces need the extra swatches - EQ has been using those rules ever since pre-kunark stuff.

Actually it is odd. Usually only masks, bracers, and neck slots require just one of something. In this case the cured ethereal energy. Sleeves are usually a two item combine. As you mentioned legs and tunic, those are usually a 3 item combine.

The further back you go the stranger it gets in the amount of items needed, but it's more per item, not less. With legs and tunics coming in at 4 steel bonings(sp?) for reinforced leather. For studded leather it's 5 studs for a tunic and 3 for sleeves. I don't know how much further back you are wanting to go than that.
