yakno...
# Feb 03 2004 at 3:37 PM Rating: Default
yakno as a ranger, with am3, eq, I dont really want this bow. Sure the stats are nice, and everyone looooooves hps, but i would rather this go to someone whos gonna tank, and I'll stick with my featherwood for dps reasons. I kno my roll as a ranger and its not to have mobs kicking my *** all over a plane. nope its to do a ******** of dmg in a short amount of time. so yea I'll take the -35hp and outdmg any ranger holding this. You should probly save this cause im probly the only ranger you'll ever hear say "naw i dont think i'd want this bow".

Any ranger holding featherwood is welcome to test against me. I think I can hold my own.
RE: yakno...

Featherwood = 39 / 24 = 1.625
this one, not included +mag = 49 / 30 = 1.63333333
this one, with +mag = 53 / 30 = 1.766666

so ya. you go ahead and keep your featherwood. everyone can see how its just soooooo much better.
---
hint from playing a ranger 101: archery dmg is bow+arrow you twit
---
not that i tmatters much anymore anyways since these and the abolone bow dont drop anymore. SOE forget to make the plane time bow better than elemental so naturally they kill these bows rather than fix the plane of time item.

i can see logic in that. no wait, its just a speck on my glasses. nevermind.

hmm, lets put to rest the insane statements made by 56lvl rangers without eqam3.. First I've yet to see any ranger hit for 3k+ crit. I've what many consider the best bow in the game..As far as being a heavy hitter. My stats dex,str are both maxed at 305. And here's how I hit.. Nondisc. hits top at 1150hp, have hit golems in pov that hard, and also Avatars in PoW. In disc hits tops at 2450. (Magelo 668939)

Why are people always talking about what class owns what other classes? Stupid me, I actually thought the game was about owning the mobs.

ranger vs rogue
# May 22 2003 at 6:05 AM Rating: Default
aye, a ranger with trueshot, the aa abilities and a good bow will outdamage a rogue, period.
(i´m a rogue)
a ranger in melee combat will not outdamage a rogue, period. (i´m assuming they have about equal gear)
how often CAN a ranger use a bow, not as often as he´d like. i´m speaking from a raid perspective here, not grouping.
what class will outdamage a ranger and rogue put together on a raid target with some hp, when ranger can´t use bow, wizards can.
not so sure if they can if ranger can use bow and uses trueshot, but they will outdamage the ranger though.
THIS IS WHY, they are fixing the dmg melees do, some say they are changing the offencive disc to 2 min. a 2 min duelist will be the melee equalent of a trueshot, and they´ll be able to use it on all mobs, not just some like rangers.
i´m hoping this is not true and they will add triple attack, or increase the crit ratio add-on.
which is now 1.72ish i think might be simply 1.7
increase that (and only melee, not non-melee like bow and spells) , to 3 or something. and better yet, increase it only for monks and rogues which are the classes that have fallen behind the most, compared to their role in raids. i.e. dps, they dont buff, they dont snare, they dont track, they dont WS tank inc superoutput melee mobs. they just hit stuff.
RE: ranger vs rogue
# Aug 19 2004 at 1:05 AM Rating: Decent
Rogues have very critical role in raids aside from DPS. They are the one s that mop up after a wipe. I can't think of any classes better at it.
RE: ranger vs rogue
# Mar 07 2004 at 1:56 PM Rating: Default
ypu. for a whole 2 minutes, once every 72 minutes, a ranger can own the other fighter classes for DPS. but thats asusming the others dont pop their burst dps abilities (aa or disc) as well...

the other 97% of the time, our dps is mediocre.

so....
# May 27 2003 at 5:35 PM Rating: Default
And so what are they gonna do for SKs to make the ratio more even? SKs get many powerful abilities, but their overall dps is much less than Wizzies, rogues, and rangers. I just think people should stop complaining about every little thing and learn how to overcome your class' shortcomings through alternative abilities. Sure you may be losing a few bits of dps overall while shooting a bow, but come on...what archer in his right mind could ever kill a knight in full plate on the battlefield?

RE: so....
# Jun 09 2003 at 6:21 PM Rating: Default
Historically speaking right about any crossbow user can kill a guy in full plate armour. Plenty of archaelogical evidence of this, quite often you see front pierced, ribs cracked and back pierced, meaning the bolt when straight through the knight.

A solid hit from a longbow could also pierce plate armour, but it was alot less reliable. But otoh they could churn out alot more arrows than crossbows could.
RE: so....
# Nov 09 2004 at 4:42 PM Rating: Decent
A little learning...

Longbows and crossbows of sufficient draw weight could both pierce plate armor (depending on the missile tip being used).

Modern crossbows of lower draw weight (150-200 lbs) can pierce most medieval plate armor if tipped with a bodkin type point. Because the material for the string wasn't as strong during the heyday of the crossbow as a those used for modern bowstrings, medieval crossbow strings were thicker and threw a bolt more slowly than modern crossbows do. Because of the lower velocity due to the thicker bowstring, greater draw weights were needed on crossbows to achieve the same velocity and force. That is why most military crossbows from the medieval period needed a cranquin or lever to draw the bow. Rate of fire was slow.

The advantages to the military crossbow were that its was easy to achieve proficiency in its use and, as it was a direct fire weapon, it was an excellent missile weapon with which to defend fortifications.

The longbow had a higher rate of fire and could equal the penetrating power of all but the very heaviest of crossbows, but attaining the necessary skill, musculature, and strength to use the bow effectively in war took years of practice and use. This was why the English crown passed laws forbidding all other sport but archery by the yeomanry for much of the medieval period.

The short, heavy, double recurve composite bows of the mongols, magyars, and parthians, also had tremendous penetrating power and were quite capable of penetrating most medieval armors.

As to who would use a bow on a battlefield against a foe in plate armor, well, the English against the French (very, very effectively at Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt), the mongols against the russian, bohemian, wallachian, moldavian, hungarian, austrian, and german armors (again with devastating effect), the mercenary troops of the great English captain John Hawkwood against those of other condottieri in the Italian states, and the Parthians against the Romans when they annihilated the legions led by Crassius.

Granted an isolated archer is a pretty easy target. But a squad of bowmen on a field of battle, or a squad of crossbowman behind fortifications were and are very deadly as so many cavalry and infantry based military forces learned too late to do them any good.

Ok, people can argue all they want about the GAME, discuss the good/bad parts of the GAME. or take pride in what they do in the GAME. However, one thing I hate in posts is real-life facts brought into the GAME. (Notice how I capitalize the word "game"?) I have seen another post about exactly how much a "stone" would weigh. OMG people let's keep it in the game PLEASE.
RE: so....
# May 18 2004 at 10:10 AM Rating: Default
The reason people bring real-life facts into the game is because there are idiots that post things that even in a fantasy game would hold untrue. Lets take the weight of a stone for instance, the weight of a stone is exactly 14lbs, as converted here
  • http://www.ask.co.uk/ix.asp?q=Stone+Kilograms&ac=none&xx=0&qid=943048BED045954B8BB286C5A83E0FA9&p=0&&sp=ix&fn=t&b=0&fo=2&r=10&io=1&fp=1&fr=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Espringfrog%2Ecom%2Fconverter%2Fweight%2Ehtm&adurl=
  • by posting real-life facts the idiots are able to unstand that they are wrong, and armor and weapons aren't measured in stones, they are measured in lbs, I think you also forgot that the game is coded by REAL-LIFE people, by being coded by real-life people the game would have real-life measurements etc.

    Sigh.. couple things...
Rogue + evade/escape = drop on agro chart
Ranger + Jolt/Cinderjolt = neg 500 on hatelist each successfull cast. Besides which, ranged attacks generate FAR less agro then melee attaks... Especially if you have a tank proccing Enraging Blow or other such agro-magnet procs...

RE: what good is god dps
    # Aug 03 2003 at 3:48 PM Rating: Default
There is no evidence to suggest that ranged attacks dont produce the same amount of hate as melee attacks, however there is a hate modifier for range from the mob. Its possible to build more hate on the mob than the MT while at range and not get aggro .. if however you then closed to melee range you would get aggro.

The hate list and aggro list are different in this respect. The person on the top of the aggro list is the person with the highest modifed hate, however someone else could have higher hate, but have that hate modified by range or other factors.

This is how I see it...

You have a 34 dmg 30 dly bow with 4 bane dmg of magic, most likely that makes it a 38 dmg 30 dly bow. Add in 14 dmg arrows that now becomes 52 dmg 30 dly bow. Then add EQ and AM3 and that's a 104 dmg 30 dly bow. With 105% haste for rangers, add in the new wolf form that is supposed to raise 15% above cap, that's 120% haste. This bow is now 104 dmg and approx 12 dly. Give us 305 dexterity and I'll show you my DPS *evil grin*

    "sounds insane, what's the catch?"

Hundreds of AA points, dozens of raids to the Outer Planes to get the gear stuff, etc., etc., etc.

Having said that, it's not much of a catch when you consider the kind of insane DPS that results. I don't even think I want to know.
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 19 2002 at 7:39 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It aint the best but it is most likely easier to aquier then primal, i can only say what i have already posted elsewhere, rangers first warriors last on bow drops, we need they want there is a big differance, besides the warrior might get it w/o a big hassel, if the group/guild just asks who all wants to roll instead of only the warriors roll or in the case there is only 1 warrior, warrior go loot it you need it more then the ranger, again use the NBG system it works wonders and is the most effective means to deturmine who gets what drops. Just remember no one logged on today thinking lets see what all i can give up today because i really dont need anything and i want all the warriors in EQ to have the best stuff we can find.

I really hope you were joking. Primal is crap compared to this... Besides, any guild that can actually get this bow most likely used Sleepers as a stepping stone to get here. This drops in an elemental PoP plane... Sleepers tomb is a carnival ride compared to what guilds go through to get here... Other than the attack bonus, Avatar on a main DPS or main tank is a moot point, since by this time they will most likely have their primary stats maxed.. or at least close. And most liekly, by the time they reach Elemantal Planes, the guild would have shammys casting better versions of the Avatar spell, most likely the reagentless version...

yeah while this certainley is nice and can considerably up the rangers damage in order to out damage a rogue is determined by the aa abilities and the bow/arrow(s) of said ranger. With archery buff, this bow, AM3, endless quiver with 11 dmg arrow, max haste and trueshot you might have a shot at outdamaging a rogue. Any run of the mill rogue up against any run of the mill ranger with comparable equipment and level the rogue will still outdamage the ranger any old day of the week. Now uber_ranger_01 against uber_rogue_01, I still think the rogue would do more damage.

Just some numbers for you Jerker.

    Level 60 Ranger.
    -255 Dex Buffed
-Swiftwind in Offhand for Attk + 40% haste.
    -Endless Quiver/Archery Mastery AA
    -Max Critical Fury AA
    -Speed of Vallon for Haste
-Primal Bow (Only 33/35 which isnt crap compared to this)
-1550 Attack (Oh you can get MUCH higher)

    Skills Further Used:
Trueshot (Ranger level 55 Discipline on a 72 minute refresh)
Guardian of the Forrest (Level 61+ ranger AA on a 15 minute refresh, 100 attk boost max)

Dps: 548 for 1st 48 seconds (Duration of Guardian)
    - Thats 26304 Damage roughly in 48 seconds.
Dps: 470 for the next 72 seconds.
-Thats roughly 33840 damage in 72 seconds.

In 2 minutes over all burn of Discipline/AA DPS of 501 Damage
Total Damage of 60144 in 120 seconds.

    ...Rogue what?

Now without the use of Trueshot or Guardian an average Ranger's Dps at 65 with a Bow and Arrow is somewhere in the area of 211-230 depending on the bow/arrows they use.

The above results aren't from me, but from a fellow Ranger on my Server, and just remember to keep in mind how ****** primal bow is compared to this.

Which leaves us to: Ranger's situational damage (need clear Line of Sight and Both Disciplines up availeable to use, with the investment of 27 aa points) blows rogues/monks/warriors away, as it should.
(Read: HEY! Remember me? U said I suck back in DL pre SoV...now go suck it!)

Ranger's day 2 day damage with archery, assuming their group/raid isnt stupid is within the earshot of Rogue damage (lv 65 rogues with Bloodbath and Ishilnear from my friend's guild parse in at 215 Dps or so)

Ie: Rogues were given a LOT when Kunark came out, double backstab, evade, THE insane meele damage. And since post Kunark havent been recieving as much in terms of upgrades because their class was at the time made god, and needed to be scaled down in relation to the upgrades given others from VI, so that there may be balance in the high end, and people have a reason to play different classes.

That is all...Don't hate...celebrate, and find a Hunter to join your guild.
    RE: WOWWWWWWW
    # May 25 2004 at 3:04 PM Rating: Decent
I was in a pickup group in Plane of Earth, this morning, and out of curiosity, I decided to parse my average DPS with both my bow and melee combat.

The parse was only done for roughly an hour or so of fighting... (Total of 29 fights)

    Total damage - 359,491
    DPS: Average - 187.63
Highest DPS in one fight - 436.83
Lowest DPS in one fight - 56.14
Average DPS with bow - 289.18
    Average hit - 166.97
Average DPS in melee - 124.70
    Accuracy 63.34%
    # hits - 2153
    # misses - 984

Not once in that entire duration did I use Trueshot or Guardian of the Forest, and it doesn't take into account pet damage from the Whip of the Earthcrafter (miniscule).

So, in overall damage, rogues would definately beat out rangers in straight melee, but, if the ranger is able to use his/her bow, the difference is quite noticable. Situational damage from a ranger, especially for the 2 minutes of trueshot, would make an even greater difference in the DPS.

The arguement of which class is better all comes down to situation. Even in PvP, a ranger, especially run by someone who knows their class, could pretty much own, in almost every circumstance, if matched against comparably equipped characters.

This is an uber item on what would be an uber ranger, you'd have to compare it to a monk with uber items for the comparison to be equal. Try matching your PDS against a monk with Exquisite pure steel ulak and Battle fists.

Heh, actually with archery, rangers dont draw much if any aggro to themselves unless theyre dumb and get low life summon (from AE or such.) Ive never had to jolt while using GotF + Trueshot and my Primal bow (33/35) with Blessed Champions arrows (11 dmg 4 fire dmg). One snare is more aggro than 20-30 shots with a bow, all doing between 1000-2000 damage, which is my average when using disc now.

Jolting Blades is the proc (and pretty worthless since I can use Call of Fire (65DD + stun for 0.0 sec) and not pull aggro when I melee.) It reduces aggro by 200 each proc, not 50.
Jolt and Cinder Jolt are both spells that we cast. They both reduce aggro by 500, not 50. They work just like concussion does for wizards.

If you're going to try and tell somebody how something works, at least make sure you're right first. Otherwise, you just make a fool of yourself. I know, Ive done it before. =)

Wow, thats some amazing calculations. I really hope that you get all the maximum rolls for the 2 minutes you need, because any misses or partial hits will significantly drop that DPS. Rogues are consistanly high DPS because of their abilities, not their disciplines, relying on 2 disciplines will help your group on a single mob, not the entire raid. When you pick a team, do you pick a memeber based on how they perform on a single mob, or how they perform for the night? So instead of calculating what you can do once every 72min, why don't you calculate what it can do for a 4 hour night of fighting? Then compare DPS to what other classes did in the same amount of time.

BTW, I went back and calculated my own perfect roll for same 2 min time frame, using Rage, and LSoEE, max haste, Duelist discipline, and Bite of Shissar(125dd proc), I roughly estimate 82,340 damage in 120 seconds, or 686 dps. But realistically, I only get about 70-90 dps on average for a night atm.

    Lol...such jealousy...such hatred...

686 dps? Wait..let me guess...this of course is scaling up the Dps that duelist deals in the 12 seconds the discipline is enabled, and multiplying it out to the two minute mark right?
This is also assuming that Duelist, which is a 30 minute refresh discipline...for some reason, somehow refreshes in 12 seconds for you (So that you may continue to chain use it)

80,000 damage in two minutes?! Damn man...thats pretty insane, considering Vindi does only about 70,000 damage in two minutes to a tank who has /defensive running.

686 dps with Ragebringer and LSoEE newb weapons? Who are you trying to lie to? Go find some other board to troll with numbers that a level 51 druid can tell you are B*** Sh*t, or stop the hate and see what Im talking about...

If you want to stop looking like a moron, consider doing the following, make an actual PARSE of damage dealt in 12 seconds duelist lasts (highest possible damage spring a rogue can do) while using DD poisons, and then post it here.
Then toss in damage dealt in the remaining 108 seconds of the 2 minute Span my friend's parse reflects.
Post the 12 second total, 12 seconds' dps.
Post the 108 seconds total, and 108 seconds' dps.
Post the over all damage dealt, and over all dps.

OH, and discipline situational damage does matter, quite a lot, especially with a discipline which lasts for TWO MINUTES ******.

Do you think wizards use their dragon bane and giant bane spells every exp group they go into? Especially seeing that both spells require a mob with 100,000 or more Hp total before any regen effects on the mob are taken into account.

Or maybe you think wizards mana burn every single mob in an exp group.

While they do not use these abilities every single time a mob is pulled to a group, wizards are extremely important in the high end raids of Everquest because they HAVE them you moron.

Grow up and see some high end, stop hating, Rangers won't be there as your little punching bag boy anymore little rogue, and maybe, just maybe try to get in a guild which can get you a better offhand at level 60 than LSoEE. Which I don't even consider to be worth wiping my *** with.

The only one spouting hatred here is you. All I questioned was your calculations. I do use a parser and do regularly group with a higher level ranger, and have never seen him come anywhere close to 500+ DPS even on a single mob. It almost leads me to believe that your off by a factor of 10.

As for the numbers I posted, i said they were based on perfect rolls, and I further went on to state what my true average DPS for a night of play was. But you must have missed that part.

In a comparison to vindi, looks like yourself should be able to solo him if you can put out 60k+ damage in 2 minutes times, just need a group of clerics to chain heal ya. So why don't you find some sacrificail clerics and try and put these numbers to work. I'm sure a single melee in a single group that takes out Vindi would get everyone across servers talking.

But I think you missed the point of my post. I challenged you to post what an average ranger might expect in way of DPS for a 4 hour night of fighting, I posted mine. And while your at it, why don't you post the log for this increadable 500+ DPS.

As to my equipment, it gets the job done considering its not my primary character to get equipment for. And for a guild, there is more to a guild then being able to buy loyality through aquisition of property.

So now, why don't you stop with the clear hatred of Rogues, and the name calling, and put up the raw data that everyone wants to see so that they may also achieve this wonderous 500+DPS.

All I gotta say is that I have seen some unbelievable hits by Rangers NOT even using their Trueshot Discipline, plunking away at mobs in Sebilis for example. These are from someone that has invested alot of time into getting the right Dex gear, quite a few AA points and a decent bow, Nightmarewood and above. Sure you can get nice crits below that for 300-500 with Trueshot, but the people we are talking about that achieve these types of results have worked very hard to get that result. I imagine it would be much the same for rogues or any other class for that matter. Stop bickering and start shooting/stabbing! We both rock the casbah!

Um, actually Daralyxx, I have seen rangers outdamage rogues often over long fights. You see at 41, I've done Chardok, ME, UP, some other high end zones with my guild. We have a lvl 59 I believe rogue, and a 59 ranger that talk all the time and well, the ranger and rogue started a log file and in like 4 hours of almost nonstop pulls, the ranger sorta creamed the rogue. Let's see, I believe rogue had LSOEE in one hand not sure what in main. Ranger had Prismatic Bow, all that nifty uber AA points stuff fleeting quiver, lots of stuff. I believe the ranger beat him by about 3k damage over the entire fight and had an average dps of like 15 more than rogue. This is not the only time I've heard of rangers outdamaging rogues, but I'm lvl 41, so I'm supposed to have no idea what I'm talking about.

That's nothing. I'm a level 44 Paladin with a Soulfire and a maxed out Double Attack. With my self buffs, coupled with a decent haste buff, I can dish out about 380dpm. Who wants to duel now! Huh?! Hehehe... what? ... whaddya mean we measure it in seconds?... I thought it was in minutes? Divide the 380 by 60? But that's only like 6... dang... nm

    LOL

Aye, Chapterhawk, we're not meant to be damage dealers.

Can keep a mob off a caster better than anyone though. :)

Sk can hold agro better, but the pally stun will pull that mob off a caster far faster than anything but a (successful and 1 hour refresh) harm touch. In fact, a well played pally can even keep the agro off a shadowknight who is TRYING to get agro... It takes perfect timing on stns, but it can be done. Even if the mob resists the stun, it generates the agro...

Have to disagree. SK spears (DD) can stop a MOB just as fast or faster. Plague of Spear (400hp DD) is 0.5 second cast and 9 times out of 10 brings a MOB right back off a caster even if I haven't laid a blade to it. And thats without Voice of Terror buff on (increases aggro multiplier by 10%). Fastest PAL stun is what..1.5 seconds??

As to your PAL keeping aggro off a trying SK..thats all relative. I pull aggro of my stunning 60 PAL friend without trying and just using SK debuff line. Just depends when your spells land.

IMO there isn't an SK/PAL issue. Neither is greater than the other.

Paladin's stuns are good until you run into a MOB that is Unstunable.

As a wizard I prefer a SK or Ranger for agro management. A ranger chain casting Ensnare about 4 times can keep a MOB off the casters better then a Paladin.

I have nuked the spiders in PoD to 60% health before it ever got into camp before and it never agroed me. Ranger just kept casting ensnare. When the spider finally decieded it was tired of trying to nuke the ranger it finally walked up to the camp.(The spider was one of the LVL 56 Cleric ones.)Never even had an issue with agro.
