I camped the AC S Ro for about 9 hours one night and had no luck. I did notice during that 9 hours that every time a "Madman" spawned (not the "A Desert Madman", just a "Madman") something sorta rare spawned after I killed it. Each time I killed him a Sand Giant spawned but once, and that one time Orbritl (sp) and named skeleton necromancer with a pet spawned in the sunken tower near the Eastern Dervish camp. I am 99% sure that the "Madman" is a placeholder for the rare spawns. He may be the placeholder for the Acient Cyclops as well. I still killed everything that moved except the merchants just to be safe but I think the Desert Madmen should definately be on the list of stuff to kill for forcing the Acient Cyclops to spawn.

Ps. I left that camp and went to OOT and killed the AC there with my guild. I am at the time a level 45 Necromancer with 186 INT and it took most of my mana to keep the cyclops killed. We were lucky, the first AC popped for me after about an hour (after I got the camp, which was just after the AC popped for another group) and a 2nd AC popped about an hour after that and our wizzy won the lotto. That is 3 AC spawns in 3 hours...

Best of luck to you all.....and the cloest Shadowman camp is in SK I think at (neg 4500, pos 2900)

In sol a there is a gnome vendor Npc that sells them for 5000PP pricy but u wont have to fight over the AC spawns

Are the boots for sale the same as the one's from this quest?

btw - They showed 5900 at 80 Charisma

Seeing as you have to drop 3250p for the quest boots, an extra 2500-3000 may make some sense.

Hrm... Bag of the Tinkerer's or Journeyman Boots..?

The effect is the same, however only Journeyman's Boots have no cast time (and so can be activated while running). This is an important distinction that makes Journeyman's Boots still worthwhile.
And yes you have to pay 325pp, NOT 3250--that's the amount of gold that is asked for, but all forms of money are treated the same for quests, so 325 platinum works too.

The minimum price on the Traveller's Boots is 5250--5% above the base price of 5000.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jul 24 2001 at 10:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Sorry Mr. Guru man but the Tboots are worth FAR more than 5k, i checked recently and its more around 8K with High CHa from a BARD!! Try loking at the price from the vendor before posting things you dont know.

# Jun 03 2001 at 1:49 PM Rating: Default
If you turn in 325 platinum pieces you won't get your boots...

Only gold works...

All forms of money are NOT treated the same for quests...don't tell people things about which you have no idea...

If an NPC asks for gold you give them gold...not platinum

Really? Then I wonder what item it was that Hasten gave me, since I used 325pp. Must have been some other item that happens to look and act just like jboots.

Mr. Anon is right I'm afraid. Note that not all NPCs that ask for gold require gold, but a good amount of the NPCs in the game do. Such as in the temple of Sol Ro, where if you ask about it, the NPCs will specifically indicate that gold is the metal of Solusek Ro, not platinum, thus they have no interest in platinum, and won't accept it as a substitute.

I also know off the top of my head some beta neutral NPCs that won't take platinum when they ask for gold.

So, unless you know for sure (not from some guy on this site, but a trusted friend tells you such) always hand an NPC gold when they ask for it.

If I give Genni in the Temple of Solusek Ro 55 platinum, I still get my fire opal, even though she specifically asks for gold as you said.
Tork@Nameless confirmed this:
http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=3293
(Note that I did this myself long before reading about it, I just wanted to show that I'm not the only one. :)

I've yet to see a quest where this is not the case. What beta neutral NPC's won't take platinum?

If I can find an example of a quest where the type of money matters, then I'll withdraw my statement...but I've been told that money given to NPC's is converted to copper, and so far all of my experiments have supported this (or any equivalent) claim.

I _thought_ I used platinum for the jboots quest. However it's been months since I've done it, so I could be mistaken...

I have a couple lower-level examples for you (all the quests I've run lately took gems, not cash). Last time I checked, the low-level quest for the Scarab Breastplate in Kaladim did not accept 2 plat and 2 gold when he asked for 22 gold. I also once tried to hand in a gold/silver combo to the Millers in Qeynos Hills for the Bear Hide Cloak and it didn't work (they also ask for gold).

It's been a while since I ran either of these, maybe they changed it.

Thanks, was wondering when someone would give some examples. :) I'll go check those when I get a chance and report the results.

Edit #1:
I couldn't find any pristine scarab carapaces to try the scarab breastplate quest, but I did find regular scarab carapaces for the scarab helm. He asks for 5 gold. I gave him 3 gold, 17 silver and 30 copper the first time, and 4 gold 9 silver 10 copper the second time. Both worked.

Note that if you give him the correct amount (in any combination), he says "Remember, for the scarab helm I require you give me two scarab carapaces as well as 5 gold." If you give him an incorrect amount he instead says "I accept your generous offer. Thank you." If Hasten works the same way, we should be able to find out once and for all whether platinum works just by giving him 325pp (and no other components), and then giving him 1cp, and comparing the messages.

I had forgotten about the rarity of the pristine carapace, sorry about that. I must assume then that Verant made a change, and a very good one at that. Nice work, Palarran. Thank you.

#Anonymous, Posted: May 16 2001 at 11:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Killing everything in the desert is NOT hpw to spawn the Ancient Cyclops. He is triggered. (and yes I know because I've done it many times) I also know others who have donw this 20+ times using this, and I personally without camping it for hours on end using this trigger, have gotten 4 or 5 jboots. Gave all but 1 away.

he always spawned on the west side at nite time
( eq time btw )

if they say a long time and still no ac then ask nicely if you can camp it next ,
it will pop soon after they leave !! lol

can anyone help by telling me the exact steps in multiquesting for this quest, ie who hands in what. my friend has the ring but he is a druid and would like to help me by getting me the boots, just need to know the steps we need to take in order for me to get the boots.
RE: multiquesting
# Jun 15 2001 at 11:24 PM Rating: Decent
I just did it with a mage friend of mine. He handed in the ring, then I handed in the rapier and GOLD (can't stress that enough). Voila, I got my boots! Don't know if other combinations work, but sounds like you are in same boat I was. Good luck!

As luck would have it I was running through SRO going to guk to hunt spiders for silk. I saw a cyclops that coned blue to me at 33(Warrior). So I attacked him lost a bub of life and got the ring. I didn't know it was the cyclops that drops the Jboots quest item. Just dumb luck.

what lvl is need to kill the AC
# Apr 17 2001 at 7:03 PM Rating: Default
I am just wondering if i will be able to solo the AC with my lvl 43 SK, or if i am going to need a small group.
RE: what lvl is need to kill the AC
# Apr 25 2001 at 4:19 PM Rating: Default
AC can be killed by anyone who can take down a fire resistant cyclops, assuming you mean in SRo.

However its a bloody horrible camp and if you try to solo him, you have a darn good chance of havivg him KSed. Last time I bothered trying AC, I was 49th with Wu's/KD combo. I jumped the mob first, but 2 lvl 49 and one lvl 41 necro all jumped on it almost immediately. I almost had a chance, probably woulda gotten kill if I had a proc or two of smite. But if one was some hard nooker like wizzy, mage or even shaman...I wouldn't have even been close.

So my advice for meleers...try to have a friend or two help out, with a SoWer hopefully. Or if you get enough help, go to OOT.
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 13 2001 at 12:42 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) WATCH OUT WHEN GIVING THE ITEMS TO HASTEN. I WAS COMPLETEING THE QUEST AND IT GOT BROKEN DUE TO NOT ENOUGH MONEY ( THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY 2250GPS )AND BROKE THE QUEST TO GET THE REST. GAVE HIM THE REMAINDER 1000GPS AND HE GAVE ME BACK NOTHING. NOW I HAVE TO RECAMP THE AC AND GET THE RAPIER AGAIN, THEN FIND HASTEN AND STOP HIM AGAIN. A BIG PAIN IN THE NECK. SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERTHING ON YOU WHEN YOU GIVE HASTEN THE ITEMS OR YOU WILL HAVE LOST TIME AND MONEY NAD MAYBE EXP IF YOU DIE WHILE TRYING THE QUEST.
When do these proc?
# Apr 10 2001 at 12:16 AM Rating: Default
Okay I know I need to be lvl 35 to get them,(or have help of a lvl 35) But when I get them what lvl will I have to be to proc them? Less then 35?
RE: When do these proc?
# Apr 25 2001 at 4:06 PM Rating: Decent
should be able to use on a lvl 1 character. Don't think there is a level limit. Back when it dropped in Najena, I knew someone that had them on his level 10ish.
J-boots: changed?
# Feb 11 2001 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent
I had been out of EQ for about 7 months or so, until recently. My question is does anyone know that if the spwan who had eboots has changed? I had thought this was a major pain 48+ hour camp spot in Najena (i think) where some Mob had these as loot. I forget the name of the mob, but i didnt think back then that it was part of a quest. I am wrong about this? or has this all along been a quest and as a newbie back then I just didn't realize it? Thanks for input!

RE: J-boots: changed?
# Feb 16 2001 at 2:54 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah, there were too many people fighting over the original spawn so they changed it to a quest. Now you have to get a ring off an Ancient Cyclops (rare spawn in S Ro, OOT,and EK I think), 3250gp, and a shadow rapier, and give all these to Hasten Bootstrutter, a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mtns. (By Semi-rare, I mean he is always up unless you need him for the boots.)

i sat in sro for two days looking for the AC killing everything in sight the first day and, no spawn, the second day there was only me and two of my friends there with me pretty much the whole day and we didnt really kill anything except things that would attack us once in a while and he spawned right where everyone said he would, in between the west derv camp and the dark elf merchants. I hope this helped anyone

You don't need to wear them
# Dec 29 2000 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
Jboots have a right clickable effect. You can keep them in an inventory slot and right click them to get the effect. This is nice since you can wear better boots and have near sow speeds anytime you are in an outdoor zone. You can also drag an inventory slot over to your hotkeys and have the jboots in the slot. This way you don't have to open your inventory to re-sow yourself.

Very nice...I didn't realize that. Are there alot of items in the world you can do that with? It's nice to have a better item equipped but still get the benefit of the other item in your inventory...cool ;)

well....there is the guise of the deviever....thats now called the mask of deception and only bards and rogues can use it...i also have a staff of temperate flux that is a wizard quest item...the stats suck but it doesnt have to be equipped to wear it, its great to pull things with cause it casts instantly, it lowers the targets fire and ice resistance by 6
