You are basically right about the lore part being to prevent people from farming items and selling them off. And in the case of some items (earrings, bracelets) to keep people from wearing two of the same very powerful items. It forces people to find another place to get a different item. No drop it used for a few reasons. I don't put too much stake in the idea that it is to prevent people from losing it, or if tghat is the case it is a stupid reason. If you are on a PvP server (I am) you should have to risk any and all items you have. I think it is more to prevent people from introducing very powerful weapons into the economy, and to cut back on twinking. True there are many items that can still be used to twink, but it does prevent some very powerful items from being given to low level characters, sold, and then the money used to buy entire sets of uber gear.

Actually Lore was started as a user request to them. I doubt you'll find any "LORE PENDING" pics on this site anymore but that was when the change over was made for many items...

Back in the long ago days, farming was fierce at times for 'uber' gear. Some folks would spend days just farming a good piece of equipment over and over so they could sell it -- green farming a lot of times... If you think it's bad now, you should have seen it back then. Level 30's sitting in HP farming PGT's (a royally "UBER" item back then) and selling them. It was set as LORE to stop the farming that many were complaining about.

You have to realize that there was no "camping" enforced back then. Who ever hit it first, it was their MOB so you'd have a lot of squabbeling between players at some spots because "camps" did NOT have to be honored (some GM's now WILL enforce camps -- like IG's in Everfrost) 2 groups or more could easily setup and cross pull... (thus /petition THEY STOLE OUR MOB!!!) hehe

LORE was first. Then came in NO DROP. Sorry but I can't recall if NO DROP was before or after PvP servers were started -- first pass there were NO PvP servers -- just 'red' and 'blue' players. PvP showed red text, non-PvP showed blue text for their name/titles above their heads. This is where 'red server' vs 'blue server' talk started from -- red players and blue players on the same server...

After NO DROP came trivial code which didn't work all that well. There were nice quests that couldn't be done when it was first introduced. They tried to 'tweak' the code but it had a lot of problems and the zones it was built into were left pretty vacant for the most part so it's pretty much been dumped.

Then comes the level limits on proc's. Then level limits on equipping things then level limits stat wise on equipment -- Required vs Recommended and the confusion this has generated from time to time.

All of it is just trying to balance out the game so folks can play without the overt 'uber twinking' so you end up with level 1's running around in level 65 gear that unbalances the world for everyone...

Anyhow, yeah I played before SolA zone existed... back when you actually HAD to /petition for your last name at level 20 and before there was even the quests for warrior armor in the Karana's (crafted). I remember a bunch of stuff from back then and the game has changed a lot since those days... IMHO it's gotten better for the most part and, knowing the past, some quirks from all the adjusting that they've done to "balance the game" are rather humerous to see folks try and explain at times ;)

I am an "old fart" too, wasting my precious lifetime on EverQuest since beta3 (November 1998).

If I recall correctly, LORE and NO DROP tags have always existed. I should be able to find old beta4 screenshots, but I doubt I have taken screenshots of item stats, unfortunately ...

What you say is true however : there were few LORE items and lots of "camped" item that weren't LORE, wore the PENDING LORE tag (and not "lore pending") during several weeks in order to allow players to get rid of the extra items because they were changing them to LORE status to try to reduce heavy farming - and then people brought mules logged off at the camp spot hehe ;)

I remember the Shralok Pack wearing the PENDING LORE item for quite a time ...

*EDIT* I found the lines in my patch archive ! :
- "Several items will now appear as "Pending Lore" and will become "Lore" in a subsequent update. The servers will only allow ONE 'Lore' item in a character's inventory (that includes the bank) - please make note of any items you own that are 'Pending Lore' - it is YOUR responsibility to have those items sold or traded by the time (approximately one week) we change them to 'Lore.' We will not be responsible for items lost when this change is made." (June 7th 1999)
- "Removed the "Pending Lore" tag from the Shralok Pack. There is no current plan to make this into a lore item." (November 19th 2002)

Heh, no drop gear also can't be looted on Rallos Zek server so lots of people go out of their way to fill all their slots with the uberest no drop gear they can get. It's really a good incentive to get people on that server to do quests instead of buying/stealing stuff.

Mr. Viper

While I see that you have spent numerous hours figuring things out. . .I would like to argue that no drop is more of an ability to keep an item on your corpse when someone kills you, and while many of us play on a non-pk server there are indeed some of these and maybe just maybe verant and sony thought about them too.

just my two cents though
