Great Bow
# Nov 02 2004 at 8:33 AM Rating: Decent
Great Bow - someone gave me one in Netherfall Lair - better than my shortbow of the Fighter I just got in the Halloween GM Event - Gandaian on Morden Rasp says thanks for the gift - got Ribbon Choker and Scalemail bracer as well

Go with nightmarewood til like 61, then save for stonewood. (nightmarewood is fairly cheap, around 1-3k in baz on brell)

good bows
# May 11 2004 at 8:35 PM Rating: Decent
ok im a 51 ranger and omg seriously i need a good bow. I dont have much time to play everquest and i really need to just solo sometimes. I have snare and 37 damage per tick dot combos so now all i need is good bow damage. (be quite you druids and other huge dotters out there give me a break im a ranger) lol. What is the best dps bow that is droppable for a ranger? that a lvl 51 can use that is all i really care about is dps and high crits. With the bow i have twisted longbow i have 233 dexterity and 40-60% bow haste (if fleeting quiver gives 40% then its 60% then if its 20% then its 40%. so the weapon delay isnt much of an issue a quick post would be awesome thanks
Magic Damage
# Apr 04 2004 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
This bow is quoted as having "Magic DMG: +2". I understand that this does a check against SvM with each hit, potentially adding up to another 2DMG to the weapon each hit.

My question, though... Would this mean that when a mob fails its SvM roll and the Magic DMG modifier kicks in, any hits from this bow are automatically Magical? i.e. Would this make non-Magic arrows act as if Magic, and able to hit creatures that can only be injured by Magical weapons (such as any PoP mob)?
RE: Magic Damage
# Jul 07 2004 at 5:10 AM Rating: Decent
bow itself is magic anyways... so all damage done by it is magic... the +2 magic damage just determines if you get an extra 2 damage or not

RE: Magic Damage
# Aug 08 2004 at 4:26 PM Rating: Decent
While he is a jerk, he's right, because the bow is magic, doesn't make the damage magic. If using non-magical arrows, you'll get a message "who-ever is invulnerable" when you shoot a non-magical arrow.

The +2 is a second magic check. The first from your arrow, the second for the additional damage.

# Aug 03 2004 at 8:53 PM Rating: Default
Go take a magic bow and some non-silver tipped fletched arrows and shoot some magic-only damage mobs (timber griffs/wisps in JPF maybe) ... then come back and edit your post.

Where does it drop?
# Nov 10 2003 at 4:18 PM Rating: Good
This bow drops during the Maze event in PoN, this event is for access to PoNB ( Lair of Terris Thule). If you get lucky, I had two drop on Brell last night and this was the only loot to drop before the Construct at the end besides a couple of diamonds.

If you are going to do this event ensure everyone gets the preflag from the sick bay in PoT, trying to flag AFTER the event is a right royal pain in the butt, look up the quest Thelin's Trouble or some such in PoN Quests.

Nice stats, all classes that can use will appreciate it, difficulty to obtain is not that great, take a couple of enchanters with you.

I would say three well balanced groups from lvl 54 - 56 with moderated gear should be able to do this event without to much trouble.

Read your post and now i have this nice bow should do me till i get stonewood. And for everyone that just post to say crap about who should get a bow has any1 ever been in a group that after a drop said " let me go cheeck the web to see who should get this"
who drops it??

Been to PON many times, have yet to see it drop. I want one for my sk.. but dont know who i'd have to kill to get one. It says multiple creatures.. that doesn't help much.

Thinking of trading in my nightmarewood bow for this (mainly to lose the rather useless aggro getting proc).

It is also cheaper than nightmarewood on my server at the moment, but would it be worth it to trade in?

IE, how much difference would there be between this and the nightmarewood? (Unfortunatley I cannot afford both =D )

EDIT: Swapped it out, Twisted is better ratio and at max haste, provides nice damage using /disc. Also made some cash in the process :p

Not bad at all
# May 07 2003 at 9:42 AM Rating: Decent
I had Nightmare before this and done crappy damage really. I wasn't really impressed at all. I bought this one, and noticed a big difference immediately.

I now have EQ/AM3/CF3/Guardian of Forest and my max crit with disc was 2078 against one of the Shiknik (whatevers) in Fungus Grove. Of course, I did have max raid buffs including Feral Avatar and Nights Dark Terror. I was completely amazed to say the least. I can only imagine the damage I'll do when I get a PoP boss bow like Ornate Abalone.

Rather than get in fights over who gets to loot this fine bow, I just bought one for my warrior in the bazaar. Besides, it will be a while yet before he can even hit PoN, and I doubt my cleric will get to loot one :) Plus, they aren't that expensive.

The stats are SLIGHTLY worse than my regular range item, but I find myself the puller a lot, and its a royal pain to have to swap out range item,s while simultaneously taunting and disarming, and kicking an incoming mob, to try to hold aggro while the overzealous druid and chanter slow and snare the mob before its fully under control.

I tried the statless long range bow, and swapping my idol of the thorned into place when I'd arrive with a pull, but more than half the pulls, I wouldn't have time to get the idol into place.

Pulling with this bow, and 100-150 range arrows is just sweet. I can stand WAY out of aggro range of other mobs, and pop the one I want to pull. Unless they are social, I get single pulls every time. VERY important for a Warrior, who has no FD, or lull type spells.

Speaking without knowing...
# May 05 2003 at 7:30 AM Rating: Default
Those who are thoroughly convinced that Rangers are the only classes who use bows need to think about the possibilty of encounters that do not consist of Warrior hitting defensive, Clerics hitting the CHeal rotation, melee engaging, nuke at 50%, damage disc. at 30%. Things have gotten more complex than that. Rogues will not always backstab, and hack/slash isn't the only answer. It isn't even the good answer. One should prepare themselves for anything...carry a bow my friends...if you can use a bow, you should have a bow available...
RE: Speaking without knowing...
# Aug 27 2003 at 6:11 PM Rating: Decent
But the best bows should go to rangers if you want them to be most effective. The damage most other classes are gonna do with a bow aren't worth another asking for a NO DROP or other bow over a ranger. If no ranger is there then it doesn't matter. Think about the way loot should be given, you don't want a ranger, rogue or bard to get a aggro increasing proc weapon, it just doesn't make sense.

Depends whether you need the AGI and DEX on the BFT and how bad. Twisted has better damage, but you lose the 5 AGI, 5 Dex and 15 of the Mana and HP from BFT, as well as 65 in range. Plus, the twisted has that ever valuable AC increase, which makes it even more usefull in melee. If your Dex and Agi are in good shape, go with this one. If you need more Dex and Agi, go BFT and sell your Twisted to me :-).

I may be a gimp, but I still like my Bow of the Huntsman.
With epic haste and WR quiver, it's damn fast.
I just swap it out with an idol when I'm not using it. But now that more bows have AC on them that will probably change.
I'm just wondering how long it will take before Verant thinks about improving some of the old world stuff rather then making new things that are just insane items that make everything else pointless in using... even to a noob.
Anybody remember pre-Kunark when you could not miss with a Trueshot...... period?
How about taking the Trueshot and Raincaller and adding a mod skill to Archery?
BAH! I guess that would almost make sense.

The endless bow debate
# Dec 03 2002 at 6:16 PM Rating: Good
This argument has been taking place since the dawning of Norrath, and it's REALLY starting to grate on my nerves. Yes, as far as game mechanics, no one excels at archery more than a ranger. Rangers are the true archers. However. . .

What 99.9% of the population of Norrath is forgetting is that EverQuest is a ROLE PLAYING game. It's not Final Fantasy, where you endeavor for the weapon with the highest stats. It's an ongoing fantasy adventure where you are supposed to "roleplay" your character. Which is the reason not all bows are "ranger only." Think about it. How many people ever played D&D? Were bows limited to rangers only? How about movies? Would you classify Robin Hood as a ranger? Maybe some would, but he seems awfully "roguish" to me! So people who want to roleplay their characters as archers shouldn't be able to strive for these nicer bows simply because they can't match the damage a ranger can do with it? That's just numbers, people. Numbers aren't what makes a true RPG fun. But too many people have lost sight of that.

Don't get me wrong. . . if I was in a group that had a ranger in it when a nice bow dropped, I'd gladly give it up to him because it would benefit the group. But don't flame non-rangers who actually go and seek out these fantastic weapons! Perhaps he's an elf from Kelethin who was training as a ranger, yet was unable to complete his training because his father was killed and he was left to fend for himself as a pickpocket.

Roleplaying, people. That's what it's all about.

RE: The endless bow debate
# Nov 22 2003 at 5:34 PM Rating: Decent
Now this is what really burns my butt and I will tell you why. We did an LDoN with 2 Clerics, Yeah 2 and you would think that NOONE would die with 2 clerics. What happened was that one of the clerics refused to heal anybody using this argument of the Roleplaying BS. this argument is a CROCK. These characters were designed with certain strengths and weakeness and to Roleplay a certain character effectively is to find those characters Strengths and use them. You dont make a cleric an archer. If you want to do Archery MAKE A RANGER but play your character the way they were meant to be played. If you are a Wizard and you want to tank, make a new Warrior class character but dont be a liability in your group and get your group mates DEAD because you want to be 'toopid and have your Wizard tank for your group because you are "roleplaying" ! Now that is being dramatic but the fact is that this is a game and the characters are limited by the game design. Every class of character gets skills they excell in and some lesser skills which they can use but are not very effective, such as a Ranger can heal BUT he shouldnt be the primary healer in a group with his 100pt heals just because he wants to "ROLEPLAY" a healer. For a Ranger to call himself Ranger/Healer who is "roleplaying" just isnt going to convince anybody that they want that man in their group healing.

RE: The endless bow debate
# Dec 14 2002 at 10:49 AM Rating: Default
As a Ranger who doesn't roleplay. I want other melees to have good bows. The reason for this is game dynamics...
If I'm pulling, how does the MT get aggro before the mob clobbers me? The best tank class, Warrior, has to use a ranged weapon. A tank should have a high range, low delay bow for pulling and establishing aggro. Just because they have spells does not mean a knight class should overlook the same use. Any aggro the MT can get should not be ignored, and a good bow is effective long before the mob gets into casting range.
Yes, with a monk puller or on an especially nasty mob, the tank will probably use a ranged item purely for stats (unless tagging is needed). But as a ranger, I appreciate a tank who keeps his archery skill up, has a good bow, and knows when to use it. Ideally, a tank's bow also provides stats useful for their class, alleviating the need for item switches.

Rogues also can make good use of bows, and not just for pulling. Often a rogue has to delay his melee attack to avoid drawing aggro early in the fight. With a high delay, high ratio bow, that time can be spent dishing damage from a distance instead of hiding in the shadows. And every once in a while, things get ugly and everybody has to stay out of the melee range of a rooted mob while the healers med. Four melees with good bows can still do decent damage.

As for this bow specifically, the delay is a little high for a tank, but the range is decent, and the damage should make up for it. The stats are passable, especially for a knight class. It wouldn't be a major upgrade for me, so I would have to ask the tanks what they had before accepting it "because I'm a ranger". Awarding it to me may not be to the best advantage.
Rangers get the really hard pulls... Nobody will tell a monk
"There's a wandering mob somewhere on the other side of this zone with a really good drop. If we go out there, we'll die. Go over there, track him down, pull him all the way across the zone, and try to avoid adds on the way, cuz we can't handle more than one, maybe two. Some of the mobs out there HT for 1k+, so watch yourself. And umm.. This mob we want can't be snared, rooted, slowed, stunned, or mezzed, and moves at almost SOW speed. Doubles for 300+, too."

When the ranger comes back with the mob right behind him, a snared add on the way, and 400hp left, he'll be prayin' that the Warrior knows how to shoot and can hit several times for decent damage. The celestial heal the cleric is casting just ain't gunna cover this one...
RE: The endless bow debate
# Dec 19 2002 at 1:49 AM Rating: Decent
It's not my impression that the amount of damage done by a bow determines the amount of agro gained. Just look at the EQ/AM3 rangers with TS disc on, doing amazing DPS and still get no agro at all.
So basically, imo, the tank will only benefit from bows with nice stats and agro giving procs.
RE: The endless bow debate
# Feb 11 2003 at 11:12 AM Rating: Decent
I agree with the rangerette. I am a ranger and I pull atll the time. I pop it with arrows all the way back to camp and even snare it just before it gets there. Yeah I get popped a couple times, but I just jolt and the warrior has the aggro. Lets not forget that rangers are part warrior. We can take a hit from time to time =)
Mixed Feelings
# Feb 11 2003 at 4:32 PM Rating: Good
I have mixed feelings on this debate. As a ranger who plays the role as a ranger, archery is my primary damage dealing device. That is my job, should all these bows be Ranger only, I don't think so, however on that same note, I really dont understand why they made the Ranger Epic TWO Melee weapons, are they encouraging us to put down the bow and get in the heat of things and melee ?? We are tissue paper tanks and dont need to be the melee gods. We are archers and melee second and I guess a little bit of caster third. What should happen is the epic either 1) needs to be continued, 2) have a mini quest to it, or 3) a complete new ranger quest, that does have superb stats to all bows and is a ranger only item. Hopefully, this would create more accurate role playing of the rangers and get them back to their roots of archery. I am not saying that others (rogues, warriors, etc...) can not be good archers, but face it, warriors crit in melee, rogues crit in sneak attacks, rangers ... well we crit in archery. Just my 2 cents.

RE: Mixed Feelings
# Mar 31 2003 at 12:10 PM Rating: Default
I have to say we BECOME archery first, melee second. You being level 51, cannot outdamage Swiftwind and Earthcaller with your bow (unless maybe you use rediculously expensive arrows). I use Tolan's summoned arrows because I cannot/will not afford to use anything else. At level 55, I STILL outdamage my bow using melee unless I'm using the trueshot disc. With trueshot, my best shot is only 538 (damage 3 arrow). However, when I hit 59 and get EQ, I will probably be able to outdamage the epics.

Rangers are one of the most versatile (and difficult to play) classes. Archery and tracking are the only things we are best at, but we CAN do nearly anything else to some degree. My point is there is no easy formula - archery first melee second - there is a time and place for everything. It makes playing a ranger very fun.

Indeed this drops in the 'maze' in PoN, as InDebt wrote. However, it can also drop off the lower level static spawn Nightstalker (werewolf-like mobs), so you can just start to look for this bow with one group, as these Nightstalkers will repop. Just don't start the quest when you're up there.

# Nov 19 2002 at 10:52 AM Rating: Decent
Getting tired of the argument over who gets what. This is a nice bow and a halfway decent range item, but most people that I group with have better items in their range slot. Bow damage output is beased on dex, the higher the dex the more damage inflicted. Another factor is the type of arrow used, 10 damage arrows with a 20 damage bow = 30 damage system. High damage arrows are only economic when you get the EQ AA, until then just about everyone uses either summoned arrows or 1 damage cheap arrows to pull, nothing new there. Now my 2 cp (or more), if a group gets this to drop that group will decide how to dispose of it, posting the "rangers should get it" argument has no merit. If the ranger in the group that gets this to drop doesn't already have better, most people will let him loot it, if other melees are there and can use the thing and it has better stats than they have for a range slot, odds are they will roll. Most folks I know wont roll on an item they cant use if there is someone in the group that can use it, if no one can use, or if everyone has better and the item is droppable everyone rolls and the item ends up in a trader satchel on a mule in the bazaar. But arguing over loot definitely detracts from the game. ITS NOT REAL MONEY.

Isn't it funny that the people who won't give a bow like this to a ranger because they can use bows too, won't allow rangers to roll on 2hs/2hb/2hp weapons.

Here is where they drop.
# Oct 25 2002 at 2:47 AM Rating: Excellent
Here is where they come from:

They are drops while doing a quest. They quest giver is in PoT. He and She, there are two people together, are Erudites. They hang out in the shake on the coast with the rest of the hippies meditating. One is laying down as if knocked out cold.

Hail the man, he is the knocked out one. Yadda yadda yadda, then talk to the women was she starts to talk. Talk this, talk that. She mentions you must find the mans planier form. His form is in the Plane of Nightmares.

Zone into the PoN and once ready go LEFT. Follow the zone wall passed the Hobgoblins and keep going. You will end up running up to what looks like a large hedge. Just on the other side of this hedge will be the mans Planier form. Same name as the man passed out in PoT.

You are going to enter his dream to get a jeweled dagger. Talk to him, make sure group leader is the one character flagged. Once you enter his dream follow him and protect him. You will be jumped at 1st be single lvl60 MoBs. TRY to stay in the center of the isleway you will be walking down. Easy to get aggro of other MoBS through the wall.

The NPC is a bad *** himself so he doesnt need a WHOLE lot of attention. After a few singles then a few doulbes. Hit hard and fast. They are Werewolf looking things, bigger and stronger then the ones that wander the zone. THESE bad boys drop the bows. Also drop Blue Diamonds and normal Diamonds.

We never finished the quest. Got to the part were we were hit by 4 MoBs and end of story =)

Hope that helps some. We got two bows and not a single Ranger in the group.

Did this Hedge Maze Quest last night with my guild and made it all the way through.Like Indebt said you get 1 mob he spawns 2 next spawns 3 and so on all the way to 7 spawns...this was 2nd time ive been on this its a 3group max quest(18peeps) first time we made it all the way to 6 spawn and both clerics got wiped ...end of quest.Last night we made it all the way...after the 7 spawn you follow the erdutite into a big room in the maze with a fountain...keeping him mezz`d you clear out the room(we had the chanters make pets out of a couple of the birds in the room) let the erudite finish up and a boss mob spawns(avatar of nitemare or something like that)He drops some nice leggs ( which I won:) Veterans Chain Leggings and some gems and a nice little dagger that has bane damage for Vex Thall? I think. When you hail the erudite after fight you get transported outside the maze and flagged for Lair of Vex Thall. THe Long bows drop randomly off the mobs along the way. I think we had 2 drop last night and 3 on the failed attempt.Hope this answers any questions.

Terris Thule is the only mob the bane dmg works on for the dagger and the Zone you get Flag'd for is the Lair of Terris Thule. I am a ranger and whenever I see a bow I really look at it. I never think of equiping a bow with stats on my other melees that can use bows. I made Shaded Shadewood Compound bows for them. The only reasons I use those bows for my other guys is for pulling or messing with someone during pvp when they run.
As far as a stat bow goes I only use those for a ranger but if someone else can use it and rolls and wins that is the way it goes. I would hope they would let me have it but if you didn't go on some raids for loot there would be alot less people raiding.
I would have to agree though about the bows being mainly for rangers. The only other thing I could see is that someone would want to give them to an alt or sell it for pp.
